BIG 3D Printed T-Rex Skeleton

  • Today's project is probably my favourite one of all time! By using 3d printers I made all the pieces for a huge t-rex skeleton. By only using some paint and dirt I was able to get the parts to look more realistic. Once assembled it measured 1.6m in length, but only 2kg of plastic was used to make it. With a 3d printer for less than $200 and filament worth $50 this beast was created.

I've found that the best way to achieve an accurate weathering effect on white plastic is to use real mud then use a clear coat to seal it and rough it up with some coarse grit sandpaper. Great videos and your Ender 3 Review really influenced my decision to make it my first 3D Printer!

I'm currently about 40% through printing this, so far so good ! I am finding that a lot of the parts need supports though, which is making the print a lot long. I'm doing mine at 210% - Thanks for the great video!

This model along with base was one of my earlier prints when I got my Mk3. All of the MakerBot models are very good. Problems I had with this model were some of the smaller thinner parts especially the ribs. I ended up using custom supports, but I would recommend using something to make bed adhesion rock solid. All in all this is a great model and well worth the time to print. I printed my bones in glow in the dark PLA from Hatchbox (wonderful stuff) and the base in Peach (Tan) from 3D Solutech. My build is on Thingiverse.
