It's your style that sets you apart, not just that you do 100%. Hope your channel continues to grow and you get everything you want in life
This is such a nice comment, thank you for taking the time and writing that down. That being said, I fully agree with you. I started watching some 2-ish years ago in order to figure out which RPGs to play and stayed for Morti.
awesome to hear! have u played alan wake 2? video game horror is too frightening for me, but that game pulled me thru to the end. amazing sequel to an awesome first title, and playing control before aw2 made it all the more special
My "better than I expected" game recently was Atlas Fallen with the new DLC. I didn't play it when it was released. I heard all the mixed reviews, but it really surprised me with how much I enjoyed the gameplay and story.
I actually just started this game last night and I am enjoying it. It has a bit of a slow start the 1st hour or 2 but once you get some things unlocked, it really opens up and becomes enjoyable. Looking forward to spending more time with it.
Even pre-patch I enjoyed the game for what it was. The one thing they nailed to perfection was the gliding through the landscapes. Will for sure go back some day because of that overhaul
I finally got around to playing Return of the Obra Dinn. No other game has made me feel like an absolute dumb ass one moment and an absolute genius the next.
It's so nice to sometimes you can find games, which you initially don't like, and sweep you away. :) I was expecting Against the Storm also in this list, but you already mentioned that title a lot of times. :)
I ended up playing dread delusion for almost 40 hours to do all quests and all. I was expecting something like 10-15 hours mostly combat game, while the combat is disappointing, i was blown by how well done the story, world building and moral ambiguity is in the choices are presented.
Patient gamer here so I haven't even played any games released this year. That said, definately Elex. I have never played Piranha Bytes games before and this was my first entry (seeing how I dislike clunky mechanics or combat in games), and it proved a bit... weird at start. The game released in 2017 and it felt like I was playing something from 2005. Once I realized that I'll be killed by critters and read a bit that I simply need to walk around and talk to people, it made things easier once I got to lvl 15 or so. The worldbuilding, the quests, the story, are all amazing, I'm really loving it despite the jank. I got it because of Mortismal recommendation and, as usual, I was not disappointed.
i hope they do the gothic remake right, you will be blown away. otherwise just load up the original probably on gog, if the janky controls aren't a problem for you, you have a playable masterclass in worldbuilding and gamedesign
Skull and Bones.. I thought it would be trash but I find it quite fun to sail around in that game. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.. man what a fun game. Helldivers 2.. Helldivers 1 was not good to me, but 2 is a great game with friends.
Dredge is a great Indy Horror Fishing game. You are a simple fisherman trying to pay off your debts by catching fish and dodging eldritch horrors that come out at night.
among pleasant surprises in last year was robocop rogue city it's rare to see something good that's based on old good movie no mater if it's a new game or movie
I'm really glad to hear about Space Marine 2. I didn't have high hopes for the original Space Marine game when it came out and I was shocked just how much fun and how much I loved that one. As for other games that were better than expected that I've played recently, Fell Seal was great. It was really cheap on sale and I had heard that it was heavily inspired by Final Fantasy tactics. It was very much an indie game and I think it was only made by 2 developers. It was limited in a few ways but overall, it exceeded my expectations and I had a ton of fun with it. If you ever get the time, I'd love to see your review of it.
Zoria Age of Shattering was a game that was a lot more enjoyable than I expected after they patched it up a little, especially for the price. I still keep playing it, it's an easy game to jump in and out of. And love when a small group of developers put out and support a good game, only 3 of them here.
My "surprisingly fantastic!" game of the year is undoubtedly The Planet Crafter. Brilliant, fun, chill game! And slightly repetitive but perfect music too.
Thanks for the video. I've just started getting back into it, but Dragon Quest 11 is ridiculously good. If you beat the main story, that's just about 40% of the game. There's so much side content that the main content seems like side content. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
Excellent list of excellent games. Agree with all of them, haven't checked out Space Marine 2 yet, but everything I've seen, including some reviewers giving it a 60%, makes it seem like it's going to be a fantastic game. :)
I've been enjoying Hero's Adventure: Road to Passion. It's a wuxia crpg with seemingly a ton of choice and consequences. (still first playthrough so not sure if choices matter yet but feels like they make a big impact)
Still wakes the deep was imo the Chinese room showing they really learned and improved over the past decade of developing narrative games. Dear esther was “lol walking sim”, machine for pigs had a really interesting story bogged down by some poor choices in atmosphere and gameplay, and this is the first time they hit it perfectly, with a moving story that looked incredible, and played well. They have always had top notch voice acting but still wakes the deep was on another level. So few devs even attempt to do anything besides an American or British culture/accent, it was so fuckin refreshing to see something different that made it feel like it was a real place with real people, which was certainly helped by the crazy amount of detail in the environment. I agree it feels expensive for what it is but on the other hand, the quality is undeniable so it doesn’t feel like a cash grab. It’s just a little difficult to justify “prestige games” where you’re paying for a high quality shorter experience, when there’s so many less pretty but just as polished games out there.
Pacific Drive was my most anticipated game of this year, and will probably be my GOTY, unless Space Marine II blows me away. That said Caves of Qud is still planning on a 2024 1.0 release, and it is already pretty amazing in its current state, and it is one of my favorite Rogue style games. Underspace is great space game that is still in early access, and it has some Eldritch stuff going on. I think once it bakes a bit more it could be really good. Satisfactory officially goes 1.0 today after 5 years in early access.
Amazing as always, I really want to try spacemarine, but my only gaming console right now is the steam deck and I doubt it works well, but Im going to wait for the review, maybe i get surprised.
Is Space Marine 2 viable for single player only? Do you have to do co-op or can you just play alone? It looks fun but with the kids at home and random work calls I can't invest in multi-player games
It's like Space Marine (1) on steroids. They managed to maintain the feel of the original, (with better environmental graphics), but with the mass combat encounters which the scenario requires by the type of enemy. Really quite well done.
Depends what you're looking for. Yes you can play the campaign solo, but (depending on your difficulty) you can clear the campaign in 6-8 hours. Even on the hardest difficulty you'll still probably get no more than 12-15 hours out of it. The PVE Operations mode is explicitly made for multiplayer until they implement solo/bot lobbies. Even then, operations seem heavily geared towards having 3 players running different classes.
I made the mistake of buying pacific drive on ps5, where it barely scratched 30 fps, which instantly ruined my anticipation. Hope they will patch it one day, 30 fps just isnt enough in 2024.
Speaking of games (possibly) outside of the wheelhouse, any chance for a Satisfactory video, since that just launched the full release version? Maybe not a full review, but an impressions video maybe?
@@MortismalGaming no pressure man. If it happens, that's great, if you can't because of time or simply not feeling it, that's fine too! Take care of yourself first and foremost

For me one of the most surprising is the Battlefront II (2017) campaign. I played the 2014 Battlefront game right before it and its lack of campaign did not give me confidence. Man I wasn’t expecting to have the greatest time in a shooter campaign possibly ever in 2. The crazy good Star Wars environments and set pieces really pulled me in. The main character was great and I hated when I had to play the hero characters like Lando, Han, & Leia. I loved seeing the Empire seize power on that one planet and the main character’s doubts on serving the Empire. And I loved seeing the game get tied into the sequel trilogy (which I wasn’t a fan of) and wrap up nicely in the Resurrection add-on. The game had its flaws but I just had such a great time as a Star Wars fan that I liked even more than Fallen Order.
