Thank you for this comparison, I was going to buy the HT-900 because my old HT-809 is getting old but I think I'm going to take it apart to clean it completely.
No problem! Never hurts to spend some time to clean up old fans. They’re usually better than new fans. I have a couple videos on my channel on cleaning these Honeywell fans, which might be helpful.
Nice job! One more consideration is energy consumption. Since i am going to set it up in my garage to stop condensation on my bike in winter, i would choose HT-900. It is 0.6A versus 0.8A. This fan will run 24x7 in winter and will make more than enough air flow at low speed. By the way, i like your English speaking, very clear on every word.
Great video, that's exactly what I wanted to see, they still sell the 809 brand new here at CanadianTire (Canada), all other stores have the 900, don't care about the noise, will be buying the 809 for sure. Thanks..
Martin Fiset Ah yes Canadian Tire,my local store has 137 in stock of the 809's. $20 on sale this week, plan on picking up a couple more. Have one for 10 years so far. Use them to circulate the window a.c. air throughout the house. Make that 152 in stock lol must be thousands of these across the country new.
So I went to my Canadian Tire. What a disappointment, website says it's a 809 with the pic but they're actually selling the 900. Bought a couple anyway cause I needed some new ones to circulate my a.c. Turned it on and what a letdown. Thought it was on low speed but it was really on high lol Box says 25% quieter,I guess it is cause it doesn't move nearly as much air as the 809
Yes, I noticed that as well. The HT-809 has long been discontinued, and even though many websites and stores seem like they're advertising the HT-809, it's always actually the HT-900.
Great video and thanks for making it! I have the the Honeywell HT-809. It's made very well, it's quiet on low setting. I have it sitting on a 36" high shelf placed next to my TV. I'm sitting about 8' across from the the TV & fan, the amount of breeze (air flow) I feel from the fan is perfect. I've had this fan running almost every night starting about 8 pm until morning - approx 8 - 10 hrs. I bought the fan in 2010, there is a little rattling noise that is present .... since I dropped it a year ago =( ... but I tilt it forward slightly & the noise goes away. I didn't know there is a newer version until I saw your video.
I’m not sure if the HT-900 necessarily has a weaker hinge, but that could be due to lower quality parts. It’s a pretty easy fix actually. The round plastic caps at the pivot joints each hide a screw behind them. Take a small flathead screwdriver or the blade of a utility knife and wedge it under the edge of each cap to gently pop them off. Behind them you will see a screw that connects the fan’s head to the base. What I would do is loosen the screws almost all the way out (but don’t completely remove it since there is a spring loaded system that may be tricky to reassemble) and apply some threadlocking compound and tighten them back in. Let the threadlocker dry at least over night before using the tilting mechanism again. Hope it helps!
TheSuperFanMan I just took it apart my self earlier haha! Turns out the plastic housing around the spring loaded system completely cracked and busted open. Took it completely apart, realigned, retightened, and now it works as if brand new! I don’t have any threadlocker though to reapply so I’ll just keep an eye on it. (I contemplated using super glue to recreate the original plastic housing and keep the spring steady but decided against it). The only issue I have with the fan now is that sometimes it doesn’t start spinning if the power cord isn’t jiggled a bit. I suppose it was pinched in a bad spot for a bit just like what happens with some phone chargers as they degrade.
Oh nice! The intermittent operation definitely sounds like a bad connection somewhere. You might want to keep an eye on that as well since further wear could cause a short circuit or a nasty shock. If you’re mechanically inclined, you could take the fan apart like I did in my video. th-cam.com/video/NHMEHllT6Ks/w-d-xo.html It could a bad power cord, a loose wire going into the switch, or maybe the crimp connectors. If it’s a bad connection inside the motor it will be a difficult repair (even for me as a fan collector) but it’s more likely a simple fix somewhere.
Thanks for this review. Exactly what I was looking for. We already have a HT809 that we purchased in 2007! Still going strong all these years. Buying the HT809 again for sure. I'm in Canada and only Canadian Tire still sells the HT809. Others like London Drugs, Best Buy, Amazon Canada etc. only sell the HT900. Amazon Canada also sells the HT908 but I dont know if its just a model number or if there actually is a difference.
I just bought the HT908. It's a bit bigger so it pushes more air at a lower noise level than the HT900. I'm liking it so far. I bought it as Walmart recently started to carry it here in Canada. not sure if it's being phased out or if it's just short stock because the HT908 no currently gives an error message on Amazon if I try to view it, and it's on backorder on the Honeywell website. The fan itself is noticeably larger too at a diameter from one side oft he blade to the other to be about 9 inches vs 7 inches of the HT900.
Could you tell my what the app is what you used in the iPad for the fan video it would be a great help if you culd because i want to make a video of my Honeywell ht 900 vs the Chillout fan witch is the same fan as the dirt craft desk fan thanks
+Kat TheFanEnthusiast true. But I tried to positioned the microphone halfway between the two fans so it's probably not completely biased. But I agree that it might have not been totally accurate.
Hey there LOVE your videos!!!!! Very Informative. I just bought a HT 906 fan. Same idea as to clean it by taking the screws off in the back ??? Would love to know more. Thanks
I believe so. I haven’t worked on a HT906 so I’m not entirely familiar with its construction but it should be fairly similar to HT-800 and HT-900 fans.
I really can't understand how anyone could find the 809 better than the 900? I would buy a larger fan, if I want a more powerful one (higher air flow while spinning slower), because they are a lot quieter, compared the 809. For a small to small-medium room, I would prefer the 900 over the 809 anytime.
People have their own opinions and I totally respect your's too. I'm assuming your primary factor of comparison is the noise level. In that case the 900 definitely wins. It really all depends on what people are looking for. Some seem to only care about power, which in this case the 809 would win. As a fan collector, I like the 809 better because of its superior build quality over the 900. I agree that it's on the noisy side but it works good in cases when I need a strong fan in a relatively confined space.
@@TheSuperFanMan Build quality is definitely a factor I can understand, also the power in a confined space. For me personally, most "normal size" fans are spinning a bit too fast, even on the lowest setting, including the 900. I even find the 900 to be too loud on the highest setting. But I guess that's not a big deal in loud environments or with headphones on.
I no longer have the HT-900 so I’m afraid I won’t be able do the comparison. Perhaps if I decide to get a new one, I’ll definitely make an updated comparison video.
I just ordered a brand new HT 900 and regret it, I should have serviced the old one. The new one has a different styled motor and in a diamond like mount position and is much slower (weaker) than the old one. It even starts off at a slower speed for a minute or so and then accelerates to a regular high speed. The old one purchased back in 08 was far far stronger.
eyestoenvy sorry to hear that. Unfortunately that is what manufacturers are doing to their fans these days...but at least the HT-900 is not a horrible fan. It's still decent for a modern fan. They are known to be reliable and powerful enough.
That’s likely the bearings drying out. Most new fans have very cheap lubricants in the bearings than deteriorate quickly. Oiling the fan will keep it going quietly for much longer.
Look at that turdbox 900, again the motor shaft stops without winding down like the 800 series, that is a binding or lubrication problem and it is a junk fan compared to the 800.

Thank you for the feedback! Yes I realize that the app is not very accurate, and I also don’t have an actual sound meter to get true numerical data. I’ve tested many decibel meter apps and they all seem to be calibrated slightly differently. The main objective I was trying to achieve was to give the viewers a general idea of how the two fans’ sound levels compare, not so much on how loud each fan is specifically. But I appreciate the feedback as I always take them into consideration when making videos in the future.

The pointed-blade fan (HT-809) has much more power than the rounded blades one.

Perhaps.

Why do these fans come with shaded pole motors.. Inefficient!
Shaded-pole motors are more compact and and cheaper to produce, so I suppose that’s why manufacturers like to use them on small fans.

true
Ht809 vs ht 908 who wins?
That would be a good comparison. The HT908 is 30% larger than the HT900/HT809. it would definitely beat the HT809 as far as noise levels go.
