    That's what it is all about, taking the time to do your job correctly. The dealerships would have changed for the DPF unit and charged the customer a few thousand dollars. Nice job mate, it's people like that keep this world honest.👍👍👍👍

    This is the sort of mechanic you need to work on your car. No fancy showroom, just good working knowledge and as he said, a guy who is willing to spend the time to understand the issue and fix it properly.
    Modern diesel engines are actually very good and extremly reliable, but people still believe that you can drive them like you would a pre Euro 1 unit. People who comment that they would never buy a modern diesel, just don't have the money to run one and maintain it properly. They are expensive, but if looked after and driven properly, will pretty much run trouble free.
    You could see from the test run that he had trouble even getting up to speed because of traffic and road conditions, how the owner ever thought they could mantain that truck driving on those roads is a mystery. The truck just isn't suited to that area, she should have bought a petrol not a diesel. And that's the problem, people just won't be told, they think they know best and then complain when their expensive diesel chokes full of crap because they couldn't get the engine hot enough on their daily three mile journey to the shops!

    Great video. Its nit just these its all vehicles with dpfs. A blocked dpf is not a problem, it's a symptom of something wrong. Main dealers are useless with this type of work and I'm sick of going round in circles. They will blame it on everything but. Sometimes when it's clear selling the vehicle is easier, as it will only come back!

    Thank you man, your ideas match with what I've done with my car and I figure out this is the way to re over all my power. I fell like I got missing 10-20 bhp by dpf got bit blocked so I was driving between 3000-4500 rpm and after that, feel straight away my engine have more power. Could be egr valve, dpf or turbo dirty so high revs helps me clean the engine

    It's not just Nissan that suffers this problem, my 2010 plate Zafira does as well and I know of other brands with similar issues. If you do low miles with lots of short journeys then think hard about how you look after it. I use premium diesel every third tank (to keep cost down) rather than cheap supermarket fuel all the time and take the vehicle for a 30+ mile trip once a week where I thrash the engine hard under load as much as possible. I also change the oil and filter every 6K miles - expensive but nowhere near as much as an engine rebuild. Great engines if looked after properly but a nightmare if not.

    An ecu isn't really a learning device. What it does is constantly monitors the parameters of the engine...temps,air flow, engine load road speed. It the alters the fuel and it radio to suit. The reason a dpf soots up is from not getting hot enough on short journeys and having a rich mixture. That mixture does not stay rich on the next long journey as you state but the egg simply adjusts the mixture to suit...but by then the damage can be done.

    I bought a diesel thinking it would be good for my daily commute...which is a long journey. What I didn’t appreciate at the time was that the journey although long was constant stop/start traffic which of course ended up in constant dog warnings and then into safe mode.
    I managed a similar thing to regen it. After paying a garage a couple of hundred quid a couple of months earlier.
    I used some Wynn’s dog cleaner in the tank then filled up the diesel. Then I took it onto the A19. Drove half an hour one way (about 3000 rpm) then the same back home. Can’t remember if it came out of limo itself of if I used my little OBD2 device to clear the codes but it works.

    Hey I got a quick question, seems to me that diesels which are fitted with dpfs in general are almost guaranteed to be a pain down the road. Was just wondering if getting a petrol engine would be better if I do a lot of city driving. Also, what do you reckon a petrol engine would be like once the "gpf" (gasoline particulate filter) gets fitted into it and one does a lot of short trips/city driving? Would it experience the same problems a diesel would or would it fare much better, petrol being hotter in the first place with much less particulates to clog the particle filter? Many thanks for your professional opinion!

  • @danielvidelock3411
    @danielvidelock3411 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Diesels with dpfs are not city cars. If you own one you must take it on a good highway run occasionally to clear the dpf. If you don't the dpf will be so clogged it will require replacent.

    Thank you for the vid. Very useful! I have a 2013 Toyota Yaris with a DPF and the engine has 130.000km (80.000 miles). I have a problem with the oil level due to very frequent regens (I counted that regens occur every 250-300 km. So the oil level increases at every 2.000 or 3.000 km and a spanner turns on on the dashboard. I visited a TOYOTA dealer last year and they said that the DPF is in a good condition. Three months ago I visited another mechanic because the spanner was on again. He made a forced regen (after that the DPF was at 15%). Also he changed the oil. Now the spanner is on again and the mechanic says that I have to change the oil... This is very confusing and I am kind of desperate. It is simply unaffordable to have an oil change every 3 or 4 months. So my question is: If the DPF is in a good condition, then why does my Yaris regen so often? Could it be a problem on the electronics or the engine management system? Could we simply adjust somehow the way or frequency that regens occur, perhaps by using some additives?

    Automatic cars are problematic because they tend to keep the revs down at 1500 or so most of the time unless driving hard and fast. The best way to raise temperature in that case is to limit the up changes so that the revs stay between 2000 and 2500. Take it on a fair journey at those revs now and again, even if it means staying in fourth or fifth gear, because they are around the optimum revs for highest combustion temperature which helps the regen start and continue with minimum overfuelling. Pulling a heavy trailer a fair distance, in Sport mode, can also help a lot.
    In over 300,000 miles with various cars fitted with DPF, including a Juke and Qashqai and Ford Ranger and so on, I've never had a single issue with a DPF. The odd stuck EGR valve, yes, but not DPF.

    • @peternumber19
      @peternumber19 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good comment. My auto cruises at 1100rpm at 70mph, I've used sport mode a few times but wondered if it's actually producing more soot than it burns. Also I'm never sure how short is a short journey 3 miles, 10 miles, 15 ?? I do quite a lot of 10 to 15 mile journeys.

    • @stevepising
      @stevepising 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're dead right, good advice. Even in manuals the problem is similar. My 6 speed manual does 1600 RPM at 80 in 6th - just not quite enough revs to really clean the DPF. I keep it in 5th on the motorway occasionally to get the revs up to 2000+ and get those exhaust gases red hot.

    I don't want to take up much of your time, but I'd like to ask your opinion. When running diagnostics on a diesel BMW and it reports failed glow plugs and DPF, is it fair to assume that in 90% of cases the glow plugs failure has largely contributed to the DPF blockage failure? and if that is true, then would you say that replacing the glow plugs offers a second chance for the DPF auto regen to do it's job, or would it require a manual regen such as you have done here. (note that the car has not gone into limp mode yet and has no warning light, yet). Many thanks in advance.

I have DPF light flashing and EML on. I can clear codes and car goes quick again but lights don't stay off for long and limp mode comes back again. I have tried a forced re-gen and it doesn't work...It will work if I clean codes and try it but EML comes backj on and re-gen stops. I can keep clearing codes to keep re-gen going but tried this method for 30-40 mins but it didn't bring the car out of limp mode or take away error codes. Any ideas? I have asked a garage who said they'll clean the DPF for 150 which sounds reasonable for me. COnsidered doing it myself but looks beyond my skill set.

    Diesels don't use an AFR. They're always taking in as much air as possible. There is no throttle.

      Francis Mullen injectors get blocked because of dirt in the diesel or having under a quarter of a tank of fuel keeping it above a quarter of fuel will save you lots of money servicing your motor and injector additives helps

    Why would you use such a car fir short journey's? I do not understand people they are constantly told 8f your doing journeys under 10 miles don't buy a diesel

  • @rayg9069
    @rayg9069 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Basically don't buy a modern diesel if you live in a city, they are meant for long runs at high loads. I own a diesel Hyundai i30 that spends most of it's time in a city. 5,000 km oil changes by which time the oil is sooty and diluted, that's full synthetic A3/B4 oil. Intake manifold off at 80,000 km to scrape the sludge out. If I don't get out on a highway for a flog every couple of weeks the exhaust smell stinks like a greasy fish shop and it idles rough. Flog it on a highway for an hour or so and it's good again. Luckily mine just missed out on the DPF by one year here in Australia.
    I won't be buying any more modern diesel engined cars.

    Why not just remove and delete dpf....overfueling and engine damage all fixed in one go?

    • @SSNebula
      @SSNebula 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because in the UK its a DVLA crime to remove the DPF and drive it OR its a straight MOT failure and I don't know for sure but I'm positive I heard from my local car dealership that if you remove it they won't put it back on as they're likely to be classed as accessories to the crime since its a crime against the clean air act to remove the DPF... DPF was made to keep emissions down so if you remove it of course you'll get better performance and lots less clogging but you're polluting the environment rather than your car which to you isn't a crime but to the public it is since once again this is why the diesel particulate filter was invented and implemented its a pain though.

    • @colinm610

      It is illegal in my country to remove it. NZ.

  • @johns9973

    Never known a Dpf not to fail manufacturers are to blame for this suppose to help the environment but your having to drive unnecessary for miles and the plume of emissions that come from a Dpf are worse than without one
