    Excellent, thank you Chris. My P1-2 has been sitting in my shop for 4 years since I bought it without use although I have been accumulating tooling. You have motivated me to fire it up!

    My brother told me he was picking up a Pantograph Mill from an auction. So I googled what the heck a pantograph mill is. Your video was one that came up, and was pretty cool.
    I also checked out your knife website. Nice project and side hustle for sure. Like the quality.

    Happy to see someone else using a Gorton with 3D printed templates! CNC has made these obsolete in industry, but they are so great for hobbyists and small shops - wouldn't give my P1-2 up up for love nor money. One suggestion: use a larger cutter (and stylus) for the initial passes of the mortice, then follow up with the small cutter to clean up the outline. Saves a lot of time and gives you a flatter bottom. Note that 0.120 stylus at 4:1 gives -0.00125" offset to the mortice and +0.00125" to the inlay for a total tolerance of 0.0025" (which is nice and tight). Gotta get me a mag-vice!

    Just bought a 3-Z and was looking for instruction. This is a really useful video. Inlaying seems like a high-precision type of work, which forces you to attend to all the details when setting up the machine. BTW, when you're lining up your work, you can engage that magnet part way. Sometimes grinder hands do that to avoid bowing their work. Also, the parallels you're using to hold the work (excellent idea) are a little thin. If they're thicker, you'll get a better grip. This is such light work, though, that the grip may be good enough already.

    Thank you! Very informative! I have a Gorton 3-U Pantograph which I have had to modify to get it operational. Getting the information needed to make the “modifications” that doesn’t harm any operations of the pantograph is the hardest part. I’ve downloaded the Gorton pantograph manual but I feel it’s “incomplete” thank you so much for this video it explained a lot of questions I have had, while using it.

      I am going to pick up a Gorton 3-U pantograph tomorrow. Can you please tell me what you had to modify to get it to cut the shields or where I can find that information? Why won't it work as is?

      @rorycrothers9588 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@garycullen1241 My Gorton 3-U pantograph would have worked just fine if it came with the stylus and collets, but since collets are like $80 for two small parts I decided to modify the spindle and expanding the collets by welding on an “ER-32”collet and I have no idea what the actual stylus looks like or how it works so I just have a small piece of metal turned down to a point with a small channel milled out of it to fit into the stylus slot.

    Hi Chris, thanks for this really useful video! I just want to confirm in my mind that you move the stylus in a anti-clockwise direction when following the outside of a pattern, and move it clockwise when cutting an internal cavity shape - is this correct? Many thanks, Malc (UK)

      Hello. It will depend on the ratio that you're using to cut the shield. If you are using a 4:1 ratio, and your cutter is 1mm, then the stylus should be 4mm.

      Hello Barry. I can't necessarily recommend it, but some folks have had success using the Proxxon pantograph, so that might be an option. I've never used one personally, so I can't speak from experience. I know some people have been able to use it, and some haven't, so take that for what it's worth. I do have a write up about it on my website though. chriscrawfordknives.com/pantographs/the-proxxon-pantograph/ Hope this helps. -Chris
