I will say this. People are concerned about drilling a hole in the frame for fear of either voiding the warranty or hurting the structural integrity of the bike but I don't see the problem either way. Use a step bit and drill the damn hole! You only need a 3mm hole which is not nearly big enough to do damage especially when bikes are being made with this pre drilled hole already. And to be fair those of us that are seeing to add a dropper post most likely aren't jumping off of 10' jumps. As for the warranty, if you're like me in wanting to upgrade a bunch of parts you are already voiding it. So take your time ,drill the hole and ride safe!
i have a 2020 model and it didnt have this but i was considering drilling the frame I could careless about the frame warranty and this video was a great reference to see how far up the tube i should go THANK YOU so much
Thank you for showing this, my Marlin 5 came with a 2x front deraileur so I think the hole for that will be covered by that deraileur tech. Otherwise I may need to do external routing. But if it's the same, great.
I have a 2021 marlin 6 and am wanting to convert it to a box 2 prime 9 one by and get a dropper post also. When you converted yours to a 1x did that reveal the hole for your dropper?
Hey @Ghost47 well you might want to find another one because when I posted the video I later asked some of the trek people for help on figuring out if bikes did have the internal cable routing and it turns out that the newer model of bikes don’t have internal cable routing
It seems like the front Derailleur was taken off of his bike to accommodate that 1x drive train, and that hole was where the Derailleur mounted. Just a thought.
@@bluelinefpv559 there's supposed to be a spare hole for the dropper post. I think he just used the upper hole where the derailleur came from when he could have used the lower hole which it was made for
I have a trek marlin 6 with basically the same fame, I can't find the cable routing on the backside of the seat tube. Is it under the front derailleur? I still have my front derailleur attached as I haven't converted to a 1x system. But did you only spot your cable routing once you removed the derailleur
Just contacted trek about this and it turns out, all marlin frames from 2020 onwards have not got the internal routing holes on the seat tube as it affects the derailleur durability somehow. So basically you gotta internal route it through the down tube and have it externally route up the seat tube (or you can drill a hole in the seat tube which I may do)
Hey! Is that drivetrain u have on ur bike a Shimano m7000 because I have a 2020 trek marlin 5 and If it is a m7000 I want to know what parts u had to have to install the drivetrain
does the 2021 marlin 7 also have this feature? I was looking around online and some people said they had to drill holes in the frame. However, I contacted a trek retailer and they said that it is compatible with internal routed dropper posts.
It does not have this feature, unfortunately. Pretty annoying as I definitely would have gone for the X-caliber 7 if I had known about this difference.
@Meynard Macol I bought the Shimano SLX chainring and crankset on my bike because I just seemed to be the cheapest but I don’t know if it still is. I would recommend looking into the box drivetrains but I honestly don’t know if they are cheaper or not.
@Alexander Lopez the dropper post is a 31.6 diameter and it was the fox dropper post I’d recommend the one up dropper just cause it is adjustable and a little less complicated than the fox dropper
@Regina Ahn I got the fox dropper post because I had the money but if you are looking for a dropper post I would recommend the one up dropper just because the height of the dropper is adjustable.
He did not drill the hole, the Marlin product line is not consistent with respect to that specific dropper post hole. To know which Marlin model supports it and which one does not look at this video: th-cam.com/video/seQK8HQ0mlM/w-d-xo.html
He drilled his hole!! My previous comment was deleted explain what he really did and what model Marlin you need to have to have the internal routing hole.. Needless to say it's not the Marlin 5!!! When you drill your hole you want to from 3 1/2" from the weld where the seat tube meets the top of the bottom bracket, use a 3/16 or 7/32 that is the closest you will get to 4mm which is the average size of dropper post cable housing
The guy in the vid did not drill a hole. It clearly was a factory feature on his bike that is no longer available. I agree with you however about location and size of hole to drill to route internally.
@@mikewatson8776 I am saying this because I have the matte black one and my buddy has the one in the video same year .. I did a full upgrade in June, I have the specs and the bike

based on the color, it looks like a 2019-2020 marlin 5. I have a 2021 model but don’t see the predrilled whole.
Yea it’s not on the 21 model
Or the 2023

Trek Marlin 5 2021 or Polygon Premier 5?
Hey can a drop post be installed on a 2021 marlin 5? I see the hole on top that leads to oitside bottom bracket. Thats all I see.
Probably not, Trek took off the pass through on the seat post mid 2020. My bike does not have this pass through either.
