Nature is indeed fascinating! I remember helping a friend who was fostering these 3-day old orphaned pups & helping her stimulate them to go 🚽 It really makes one appreciate the wonders of nature!
Now here's a thing. I was told that the mum cleans up the peepee because when they were in the wild predators could smell the young, so they did this to help reduce the smells. But the stimulating to wee also makes sense too
Both are true, fren. In the wild, momma needs to get rid of their scent as it does pose a danger of predators picking up on their scent. And when they are newborns, their mother cleans them, but at the same time is stimulating them to do potty. She massages to move everything downward, & it stimulates them to go. Amazing how Saki Instinctually, knows exactly what to do. ☺
@Christine Zangari a mother's instinct regardless of whether its a doggy a human or a lion, the mother just knows what is best. I remember when my son was born, I was and still am probably utterly useless. She on the other was quite incredible
I guess this is a thing with a lot of animals. I watch panda videos, and it’s a big deal for the mother to stimulate the cubs to pee and poop. The breeders do the same thing for the babies, they rub the underneath and tap it, so that the babies can do their business. When they first start breeding pandas in China, many cubs died from constipation, they couldn’t let out the waste. The breeders started watching the mothers, and learned from the mothers, what to do to help the cubs. Much better success rate then.

They're just fine, fren. Bedding, blankets, & towels as some have suggested, is ill advised for newborns. If it bunches up as they move around, bedding could bunch up around them & there's potential for suffocation if they are not closely monitored. It happened to Oliver & Hooman #2 with Suki's first litter. Was a horrifying experience for them, but thank God the potat was OK. So they know from experience. 😞 Best not to use it till later when they start walking & are stronger. Oliver also mentioned the other day, that it's already quite warm in Malta for early Spring, & the house is quite warm. The potats are not directly on the bare floor, the whelping box has a wood floor built into it, & wood actually holds heat. So the puppies are quite warm. Don't forget too, that Instinctually & in the wild, puppies are use to the ground. They adapt to whatever surface they are born on, & don't in any way, require the pampering of human children. Saki will take care of all their needs. ☺

People forget that these aren't human babies and the needs are different. I honestly don't think for a moment that Oliver would be visiting and continuing to film if he thought Saki and those potats weren't being taken care of by capable hooman's!
@kayhansen9229 well actually it was their vet who told the family NOT to put anything down in the whelping box! It is too hot and it isn't good for you. My point is a human baby needs a blanket where as a dog has fur on it and can lay on a cool whelping box where a human baby could not. If you go back a few videos and read Oliver's pinned comment it explains that they were told to ABSOLUTELY NOT put anything in the whelping box because it could end in disaster as it almost did with Oliver and Suki's first litter.
