    It was so endearing to see the young woman visiting the LA market share her apple with the producer and camera man. You never see anyone interact with camera men, yet she shared something she was in awe of.

    16:33 I am amazed at how the girl is casually narrating that she got caught by a cop while exchanging money, put into a detention cell, and left to starve. You brave, girl!

    The North Koreans in the film have some compelling life stories. Their resilience before tyranny and hardship is praiseworthy.

    The man named Kang Min seems to have adjusted relatively well to the South Korean society. I hope his life and the lives of the others featured here will flourish bit by bit. Thank you for this documentary.

      it is hard to accept like the view of the TAlibs that everyone is bad, northerners do learn a lot about the south discreetly. they too are people. but they are less prejudiced and fanatic than the TAlibs. They simply had a hard system which was in place due to the war which everyone else had no time to confront early on, especially when the world powers were shifting their priorities back then.

    How they talk about hunger, stealing, trading, being detained, escaping and laugh about it - unimaginable for us who never had to go through that, it was daily business and norm for them. They have super strong personalities and can be so self-sufficient after living under such conditions. Its the same when children who grew up during the war talk about it as if it was normal and even laugh about it. You adapt and make the best out of it. Much respect.

      Laughing while talking about traumatic events is a coping method
      Usually the worst trauma is hidden behind laughter
      If you start to cry it's hard to get out of the misery hole

    One of the best docs on the DPRK; concise and passionate, full of heart-wrenching stories about strength, struggle, famine.... of love and unwavering bravery. This should have at least a million views; it's one of the most informative and 'real' docs on the struggles inside the DPRK (and I've seen just about every one as I am so fascinated by the precision of brainwashing that begins basically at birth).... It's a shame so few people have been enlightened to how arduous life can be for the average person in the DPRK (the 'Desperate Pathetic Regime of Kims')

    I hope someday, the North Korean people will gain their freedom. We Filipinos are free to do what we wanted except the things which are against the law of course. Many of us are poor but we're not starved. I feel sorry about those people especially children who are starved to death.

    • @kethrayabsin4509
      @kethrayabsin4509 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @president camacho how can you say that they live better than Filipinos when they are not free to do what they want in thier lives? They are not allowed to go wherever they want to. Filipinos are not poor if only the past administrations were not corrupt. But now Philippines is improving and step by step many Filipinos' lives will flourish too. N. Koreans are ruled by a tyrant leader and how can you say you can have a better life if you live there? Freedom is what our ancestors fought for so many years and they shed blood for it so that the next generations will enjoy freedom. And that is what they are lack of.

    • @kethrayabsin4509
      @kethrayabsin4509 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @president camacho Philippines is different from the US. Perhaps in your country majority of people are lack of discipline that's why it has the highest crimes in the world. Freedom is not doing bad things, but for me, it is the right to do the things that you love for the good of your country.

    • @kethrayabsin4509
      @kethrayabsin4509 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @president camacho money is not involve in the situation. How dare you say that. You're not living in my country and you don't know the problems in which our country is facing because of those addicts and druglords. The lives of those innocent children destroyed by those addicts are more important than the lives of those addicts. Our President is going his best just to preserve our country because he wanted to provide a better and safer place fo our children. Fortunately, the rate of crimes is decreasing within his presidency. Your country has no descipline and most of americans are abusive. Americans colonized our country for 50 years and they killed many filipinos including children. And how was that? Is it ok for you to hear that? Did hear a filipino abused and killed Americans? Americans killed many innocent people even the black they killed because they wanted to get rid of these blacks. How was that? And now you are complaining against our President?

    This is a great documentary, so many DPRK docs focus on the bad. This sheds a lot of light on the fact there is some hope for the NKorean people. Its just so sad that despite their struggles and everything they've overcome, they ultimately have to leave home to express themselves fully in this way. I can't wait to hear of the day when even more of the ones still stuck in NKorea are allowed to express themselves fully like these young folks without having to flee to do so. I truly hope with so many of them exposed to what is outside their Juche teachings that the near future holds promise of rebellion.

    All of them grew up in the 90s during the famine. I'm really curious to know what it's like now. If it's better now and everyone can get food and survive and prosper, or if it's just as bad. I feel like everyone we hear about who defected left in previous decades or the beginning of the 2010s because it's almost impossible to get out now under Kim Jong Un. But I really wonder how things have changed since these individuals made it out. I sincerely hope so for all the people still in NK

      You do that most NGOs are funded by governments, mostly intelligence services. It was a less obvious way to propagandize, as the government money was funneled into a front group. "Independent" NGOs, like Soros' Freedom Society are controlled and funded by one man for very destructive ends, not really better than the intellgience services NGO.
      I'm not familar with this front group/NGO, but from its psychological manipulation, and say its your garden variety billionaire tripe about free markets, labor arbitrage, financial speculation, etc.

But now I can travel in most of the world countries without visa (I need visa only for the US, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand but I can travel in every single South America country, China, Russia, UAE, EU... For me its enough to explore, in few years I'll get a chance to travel there as well. Americans should understand that freedom is not free and that even in the USA, the maintenance of a free people rests on the determination of the youth of each generation to educate themselves about the rest of the world and, here at home, to move forever towards a more perfect Union. It honestly brings hope that the prisoner-citizens of NK are becoming more and more aware of the outside world and the lies they are being fed, that with this knowledge they might stand together and fight for freedom from within. Just how the government couldn't completely destroy the Jangmadang markets when they were emerging, if mass change is brought on by the people, control can be recouped by the people.
    Such a majority of NKs are brainwashed that is it refreshing to know that the newer generations won't be. This is progress! One of my hopes is witness the freedom of NK in within my lifetime. Thank you again for this! Very enlightening.

      @@danielseaburg9763 All that is an exaggeration of facts and controversial areas.
      Look at the Grayzone's reporting on China and the Uighurs for example. It may open your eyes to the Western Propaganda against China. Not saying China is great or North Korea is great just that there are a lot of Western lies and nonsense that is palpably false. If you haven't come across the Grayzone look them up - Independent media are doing seriously good work exposing things like Russia gate and the supposed chemical weapons attacks in Syria great stuff on Palestine and China also.
      I just take anything with the 'attack 中华人民共和国/China or 조선민주주의인민공화국/DPRK' agenda with a very, very, large pinch of salt.
      All I am saying is that there is Propaganda out there from both sides. For example it's getting to be a generally accepted fact in the West that China is committing genocide against the Uighur people. It turns out that the vast majority of reports into such come from about two stupendously unreliable sources with CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) written all over them (Debunked Myth).

      The farther away from such trade centers you are the poorer the people and therefore less likely to find an opportunity to get out. You need money and an opportunity as well as connections to leave and distance without internet, cars and easy access to contacts is a very real problem.
