  • This castle was founded by Henry de Beaumont in 1107. Henry was a Norman Lord and the 1st Earl of Warwick. He acquired the Lordship of Gower in Wales around 1107 from the favour of King Henry I and subsequently built Swansea Castle. A few years later Henry returned to Normandy and entered the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Préaux and became a monk. He died there on 20 June 1119. The castle Henry left behind was of timber construction but was rebuilt in stone, probably between 1221 and 1284 after it was unsuccessfully besieged in 1192 by Rhys ap Gruffydd. After a series of failed attacks, the castle fell in 1217 and was subsequently restored to the English in 1220.
Part of the interior of the castle, in particular the large motte, was demolished between 1909 and 1913 to make way for the construction of the newspaper office's of the South Wales Daily Post which once employed the poet Dylan Thomas.

That was fun! I'd like to visit the town and castle. Shopping and a bit of history.

Ah my hometown castle, been past so many times. It is such a strange thing, location and what's left etc
Old Copper works buildings down near the Stadium worth a look there nice and hold alot of history.

It’s nice that something is left at least.
We didn’t see the copper works building unfortunately, we had to move on. I wouldn’t mind going back though

    It’s only a fragment unfortunately.
But just think.... at one point it was huge!
Totally over powered by modern surroundings which makes the remains
of the castle look totally out of place but it’s not the castle that’s out of place it’s
every thing else around it ironically!!👍

It’s the same with Monmouth Castle, it’s a shame we can’t see more of it.
I feel like it’s the modern surroundings that are out of place 😂

When I was a teen (in the 1980s) I actually slept in this castle on a dare.

Yes castle cinema it was called and my aunt an usherette and dear friend Gareth the projectionist worked there for thirty odd years or more untill late eighties and then it was the laser droom, and next the building is to be used for maybe student flats inside the graded building so exterior should stay same, and the castle was used as visible debtors prison, boy if you owed money in those days boy they shamed you, and someone would pay to get you out or not😮they also they showed 1st Jaws film and first indiana Jones film there in cinema to name a few.Building behind BT and the GPO before that I think! 😮

No bake ovens, no galleries, no steps to climb, aw. I wonder if it's like a movie set, a facade held up by 4x8s

Annoyingly there is an interior, you just can't get to it. Many moons ago they would do occasional tours. I found an article about it here: www.annmariethomas.me.uk/2012/09/swansea-castle-tour.html
There are a few photos of the interior but I suspect there isn't that much of the little details of castle life that we find so interesting remaining.

The TV is used as a screen for events in Castle Gardens. Sports, movies (in the summer) and other events in the city. Its not really a bad idea.
The Castle itself was victim to poor town planning, poor legislation on preservation of its historical importance and the nazis. Swansea was one of the worst hit cities in the UK during WW2. Its all had its toll on the city.
