Better Death Than Dishonour At Old Beaupre Castle!

- Old Beaupre Castle is actually a ruined medieval fortified manor house rather than a castle, built circa 1300 and located in the community of Llanfair, outside Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It was owned by the Basset family who carried out intensive remodelling in the 13th century, adding other buildings to what was originally an L-shaped building to create a courtyard, with an impressive outer gatehouse, a three-storeyed Renaissance porch and buildings around the middle court. After the English Civil War, the Basset family fortunes went into decline it is thought because they supported King Charles I. Spoiler alert! He lost!
At the beginning of the 18th century, the Castle passed by inheritance to the Jones family who chose, in 1709, to sell it and live to the more modern New Beaupre.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, 'Better Death Than Dishonour' is the motto of the Bassett family and can be found on a heraldic panel above the front door.

I think for me, part of it is the continuity of many of these structures throughout the ages. History that is so wonderful - to my sensibilities at least!
May I ask a rather "out there" question of you both with most due respect - in your visits and explorations, have you all ever come across anything that stands out as "otherworldly" or spooky, or ghostly or felt you weren't quite alone?
It really is so surprising that it is still in such good condition.

As far as otherwordly or spooky goes we have never experienced anything like that. Perhaps it's our outlook on life but these old buildings are just old to us and in no way daunting. Living in Wales we are surrounded by very old buildings and we live in a very old house that dates back in parts to the 14th, 15th and 17th centuries, so to us they are very normal.

I've often thought it would be fun to create a coat of arms with important items in it in those little sections. I'd have a black cat and a spindle, except then I might be taken for a wicked fairy at the christening..

Ours would probably be books and a cuppa hot something, with the motto ‘drink tea, read books, stay inside your castle’

It is pronounced Boo-per, at least it is by the locals.
Aren't they the private hospitals / medical insurance people? No, this is far too nice a place to be involved with that. 😀
