1:00:30 this engagement was masterclass. 30+ min into a game and just slowing poking with 4-5 units to force the Zerg into your spread army. Genius play
It really needs to be emphasized how much Clem has evolved as a player. He's always had an incredible offense, but he's showing Maru-level defensive end-game knowledge. Clem has really become a well-rounded player, pulling back and punishing with layered defenses and snipes over and over, draining thousands of resources in positive trades each time. Clem is starting to look unstoppable.
What a series. This was an instant classic (Attack in Atlanta? Assault in Atlanta? I've been watching SC2 for about eleven years now. This is just about the best series I've ever seen. Nail biting from start to finish, insanely high skill throughout all games, some absolutely miraculous holds and a very welcome and deserved outcome. Pretty much the best SC2 has to offer.
@@tigera6 was that a Katowice Grand Finals? I think I've seen most of the Serral vs Maru games, but I'm not generally a huge fan of those. A bit of a weird preference, but Maru is a bit *too* perfect for me to root for him. Clem getting this far in the tournament, having lost two finals to Serral shortly before, and now withstanding the onslaught that broke so many players before, for so long, while forcing Serral to make mistakes...that just makes it extra special. Who doesn't love an underdog story? Oliveira's run last Katowice was also amazing. Hero beating Maru a couple GSL's ago with amazingly bonkers play was a joy to watch as well. Or Cure finally winning a GSL. Basically: great gameplay, plus a great storyline = great series.
@@idde4345 It was a major online tournament called KoB2, Maru went through a run through top Zerg similar to Clem this time around, beating Reynor Dark and Serral to win it. And I agree Clem has clearly grown in recent months and his game is now much more well-rounded than before, hes playing for the long macro game rather than just trying to kill his opponent off and get countered.
@@tigera6 I watched all of KoB, so I'm sure I watched (and enjoyed it). But I think that one of the things I appreciate a bit more about this series is that Clem seems to combine a turtly style with breaking out every once in a while to kill bases. Maru has a tendency to just completely turtle up, absorb all attacks, and slowly but surely expand. And hey, I'm not gonna argue with his results, and how he does it is freaking masterful, but I think it does make for a bit less dynamic games. At one point in game three here Serral had 9k (!!!!) in minerals, and the game went on for like 35 minutes, but it was never just a Terran sitting there, waiting for the opponents resources to run out. I really like the combination of Clem turtling, and aggressively striking out when Serral is quickly remaxing.
@@idde4345 To be honest, Clem was on full turtle in game 3 after 15 minutes or so, he never push his army into Serral side unless Serral committed and lost all of his army then Clem will counter. Otherwise, its just minor harassment like a couple Libs or Mine Drop here and there. That was a full turtling game from Clem, but I understand thats not the only thing he has played, there were game 1 and 2 where he was pushing non-stop. So its true, that Clem is capable of playing both style at this point which is great for him.
I was at Dreamhack and game 3 was insane! Serral like a shark circling and giving Clem so many opportunities to fumble or mess up. The vikings intercepting the drop overlords was so clutch!
Great cast! Biased Terran question here: why is roach into lurker not called “turtle Zerg?” Whenever the Zerg opens roaches it kind of forces the Terran to sit back. By the time you have enough tanks, they have vipers which means you have to wait for ghosts. You never see Clem sitting back if the opponent opens ling bane. Clem had equal APM to Serral all series (since it’s Zerg that suggests Clem was playing significantly faster). It’s disappointing seeing all the zergs complaining about balance when Clem truly outplayed him all series with the usual insane combination of multitasking and micro/macro.
Anyone who thinks Zerg is not OP is ignorant. Zerg literally requires the LEAST micro skills and they have it easy relative to Terran players who have to micro their heart out to have any chance of winning vs Zerg. Other than Terrans, what other race has to regularly disperse NEARLY EVERY SINGLE UNIT in a group to survive a battle, on EVERY SINGLE engagement vs. Banes, with 1 single mistake being devastating to the game? Dodging widow mines, which are easily TELEGRAPHED with a visible pointer (no other race has units that will literally TELEGRAPH the attacks; same with liberator - how stupid is that), is a piece of cake compared to dodging banelings. Plus Zerg Spell casters are way OP - they have so many offensive spell options that affect entire groups of units, with 1 single click of a spell affecting entire group, while Terran has no spells that are even remotely useful except snipes, which you have to click each individual enemy unit (Again, more MICRO intensive), and even this has been nerfed. Even EMP is purely DEFENSIVE, not offensive, so Zerg spell caster can just run back and immediately replenish energy and return. Protoss has psy-storm, single click affecting entire groups of units, Zerg has parasitic bomb (affects multiple units), fungal (multiple untis), blinding cloud (multiple units), PLUS powerful individual unit spells like neural parasite. The Viper should never have been given parasitic bomb - it is already too OP. It is very ironic that even in SC2 Liquipedia, it describes Viper as not an attacking unit but position-altering unit - "The Viper does not attack. Instead, it uses its spells to disrupt the positioning of enemy units" - what a farce it is that parasitic bomb was given to them that will almost always kill medi-vacs. One last gripe - Why the hell are Lurkers given the option to hold fire, but the widow mines aren't given this option???? Playing as Terrans are is such a disadvantage in so many ways unlike other races, it's a miracle that many Terrans players have won as much tournaments as they have - By the way, if you look at ALL MAJOR TOURNAMENT WINNERS by race in the past 3-4 years, >50% are won by ZERGS - no one can deny this fact.
Well roach 1-1 timings and fast lurker timings do exist and are pretty strong, however you're right it's a very hard to ever break a player that plays this style so it is kindof the turtle zerg strategy

alcyone and oceanborn games was so darn good. With game 3 and 4 I am wondering where this ranks on Pigs list of series of the year? Ty for that amazing early Christmas preasent
incredibly top tier series. I always feel Clem vs Serral/Reynor is the most exciting SC2 that exists, with the added weight of this being Clem's huge big premier performance it very well might be series of the year
This was the Final... don't want to hate on Dark but Clem and Serral are simply in a league of their own at the moment. Their win rate these past months is simply ridiculous.
I'm surprised by Serral here. Twice he plays the same game. I wonder what he thought he could do differently. It felt like the second time around the Ultras popped earlier, but his refusal to switch to another comp despite losing the same army over and over is... strange. That being said, amazing series
@@SPQR_14Oh I'm not going to sit here and pretend I know a fix that Serral doesn't know about. I was just surprised that he chose the same build twice in a row. I wonder what led him to make that decision.
I also find ghosts tough to deal with, but they work especially well against the kind of units Serral built. I also would be interested to know his thought process. Like Pig said, maybe in his practice he just found other comps to have even worse odds, or thought tech switching would be too costly. Or maybe (again like Pig said) he may not have been practiced enough verses a turtle player, and he focused his training verses what he thought Clem was going to do with a more aggressive style. I would like to believe this is a case of Clem pulling out a surprising style of play that Serral didnt think he was capable of. Maybe the series was won in the practice room rather than by some extreme game imbalance.
To be fair, Dark also used the same comp in the Grand Final in lategame, so I am not sure if its a Zerg thing in the current patch/map pool or just Serral. But I do think Serral could be better off playing with either BLord or just HydraLingBane here. Because Ultra really suck balls against the well setup Terran defense. The funny thing is, Maru has been playing this style for over a year and a half ago, and people was criticizing him being boring and too passive, but now Clem playing the exact same style and hes being hailled as the greatest Terran ever, which is a bit of a double-standard. Nothing against Clem personally but winning 1 international tournament with relatively low prize pool doesnt make him the best Terran ever, but hes is surely the best right now.
@@app2530 Serral play Maru often enough to know how to play against turtling Terran style, I think he just lost his thinking among the fighting there. In game 3, Clem literally hold the last mining base with 3 tanks and some Marines/Mines, all Serral needed to do with making 3-4 BLord and keep shooting down the mining workers and he would probably win, but he made more LingBaneUltra which suck in that scenario.
Wow! What an insane series. Clem is my hero!!! Zerg still OP though.... -remove spore trick (can't morph if damaged in last 1 or 2 seconds) -reduce vision of burrowed Zerg units -morphing ravengers shouldn't regain health -spore crawls/spines shouldn't be able to move (cannons/turrets can't) -vipers should have to Regen mana like all spell casters -infestors moving while burrowed should cause a more visible animation. -lurkers burrow/unburrow way to fast
I always thought the spore trick was so bs, like it should cost more mineral to cancel spores, or there is a delay after input of turning from drone to spore, also how many times hellions finally come into the mineral line and they just evo block. Infestors are way too invisible to see I agree! I would say spores crawls should be slow to move or they should take twice the amount of time to borrow Another one I would add is Hellbates are able to tank more baneling hits because they seem like a pointless unit
Game 2 was like idrA frustration game of the past. Serral had vast of opportunities to make broodlords and end the game right there. Instead, he kept building Infestors... :/
Frustrating when Zerg dont make a few corrupters and counter the endless drop lift shenanigans. Ghosts sniping and emping seems imba, lower their health or mana. Frustrating watching serral but good cast
6:28 Råd-huset (Court house) Råd means council and used to exist in English as well, as in Eathelread the Unready (the ill counselled). Other English variations are Middle English red, rede and Old English rǣd. So you can use any of those pronounciations for Råd. Huset is the same word in English, house. Just slightly different spelling. Actually, you pronounced really well actually. But now you know etymology too :)
agree with this take somewhat, I still think Serrel is definitely the greatest Zerg ever and has amazing skills, just does feel like Terrans have to "dodge more bullets" in big battles than Zerg players who remax in 10 seconds
Hilarious to see all the Rock league armchair generals in the comments. Great series as always with these two, really impressed by Clem's improvements this year. Growing up to be a real contender.
I don't think ESL would be cool with me ripping parts of their production unfortunately so won't show cameras the whole game, but I might try to show a reaction to victory shot after some of these casts in future though
damn Clem did they ban science vessels? those fungal's were punishing in 3rd match nice pick ups to save the ghosts but the Viking's got hurt pretty hard
Think Zerg players micro skill are amazing?? Not really, they have it easy relative to Terran players who have to micro their heart out to have any chance of winning vs Zerg. I would argue that banelings telegraph where they are going to explode as well. On the account that they literally move their entire bodies to the location they are going to damage lol

I haven't seen any pro Terrans use Ravens anymore cuz they've become pretty much useless and are so easy to pick off due to their slow speed. Do I need to say more??? And yet you deny that Zerg spellcasters are OP -well I'd think everyone else will probably agree with what I've said - here's another proof - ZERG players have won >50% of ALL MAJOR TOURNAMENTS in the past 2-3 years. And yet Zerg is the LEAST micro-intensive race, while Terrans are the MOST micro-intensive - tanks/liberators require siege/unsiege and are SLOW as well, Thors are SLOW as hell, Widow mines you have to BURROW/UNBORROW and are nearly useless in pro games UNLESS you MICRO target and even then its attack is 100% TELEGRAPHED with white line towards target which allows good ZERG ability to dodge them (again, micro-intensive). Widow mines easy to dodge - just run 1-2 lings into the line and you are done - you don't have to micro individual zerglings within the entire group. The only semi-microintensive Zerg unit is Lurker - and why the hell are they given HOLD FIRE while widow mines weren't?? Hold-fire Lurkers at the right moment can completely DESTROY entire army of Terrans. When was the last time you saw Zerg player having to separate a group of their units into smaller clusters to avoid destruction of the entire group in TvZ (pretty much required in every single engagement Marines vs Banes otherwise you lose the entire group of marines)? At least Protoss has Psy-Storm for area damage, +Colossus is extremely effective vs Lings/Banes. But for Terran to have ZERO area offensive skill??? and yet you think ghost is the most powerful spell caster in the GAME???? Not to mention SNIPE was recently NERFED!!!! You are delusional.
yeah dude. infestor's fungal has 20 damage and you need to have 300 IQ to sneak it and actually hit anything. especially in Clem's army. parabomb damages and damages and damages but does not really kill anything. terribly OP spellcasters, I agree.
lol yeah ok...all T has to do is get ghosts ...which literally can snipe every single zerg unit easily...even can put it on rapid fire so the terran won't have to push the keys so many times to kill all the zerg...Ultras immune nope the huge armored beast gets sniped and INSTANTLY evaporites...Brood lords..giant armored flying creatures?...nope instantly eliminated with 1-2 snipes.
@@AxelTT555 Who cares about FUNGAL's Damage when it basically renders an entire group helpless to run away from the Zerg wave that quickly surrounds and finishes the job? Your comment about parasitic bomb that it doesn't really 'kill' and MERELY damages is so stupid - the whole point of the spell is to damage and make the units squishier for rest of the Zerg horde to finish'em off - then why the hell would pro Zerg players use it ALL THE TIME if it wasn't extremely useful? Any race would benefit from a spell that damages entire group of units - and I haven't heard you comment on the blinding cloud yet either, nor Viper's ability to quickly replenish energy
I watched serral vs Clem and all i can say is that this boy is brilliant and humble. For those that think the game is balanced go see the series i mentioned and watch how clem is trading 3 times better and could not win. BALANCE LUL
amazing games. amazing casting. it looks like Clem leveled up to do to Serral what Terran does best to Zerg at every level of the ladder - turtle efficiently. It is virtually impossible to trade efficiently headbashing ZvT, so mathematically zerg either finds a way to out-macro, overwhelm, or steal resources in mid-game --- or terran will win the efficiency war and be the only one left with money during late late mine-out. it starts at the very beginning with zerg throwing away gas in banes to kill mineral only marines and terran flying away gas in medivacs. then progresses to ghost snipe outranging and countering everything zerg has. The counter is to build non-biological units... ohh wait.... im curios what Serral will do to the meta in response.

Serral fights like a wuss. Yeah, I said it. That’s why he always early-quits games, sometimes prematurely, and backs down from some fights even when he has a 2-to-1 army supply advantage. All his Zerg housekeeping mechanics are dialed and on point, and his insane production efficiency gives him that world-class edge, but he has no killer instinct or willingness to scrap tooth and nail down to the last bloody claw. In contrast, last year’s world champ Oliveira/Time - although he’ll never be the caliber of player Serral is - demonstrated truckloads of the one quality Serral doesn’t have: Massive Heart. Man I love StarCraft lol.

people say zergs are OP toss needs buffs and terrans been crying for years. the reality is protoss could use a small buff but the underlying problem is that all the protoss players we currently have arent as good as their counterparts playing terran and zerg, too many protoss left for military or moved on with their life only hero classic and maxpax are top tier and maxpax doesnt go offline so you only have 2 top tier protoss players who realistically have a chance to win it all, and terran is by far the strongest race if played perfectly out of all 3 races, and even if you fall behind you still have the option to turtle and win unlike with protoss and zerg who dont have the same options, and we see maru do that to perfection and now clem, huge respect, im so happy for clem and i cant wait to watch him play in IEM, if you think zerg or toss is OP its not a race issue, its a skill issue git gud nerd.
clem's big problem wasn't "nerves" or whatever. it was patch balance now super tilting the matchup in his favor now with his mine heavy style vs nerfed banelings.
@@PiGCasts This still impacts the game. now that banelings are killed much easier, their probability of detonating on ANYTHING (including mines) is drastically decreased. more mines unloading their load is a bigger probability now. Terran just has to build a ton of static defenses, wm, tanks and thats it... "Improvement" my ass, clem realized he isnt as good as serral and he has to turtle to beat him, meh
Clem played incredibly, but I will say this. The fact that a single mine can INSTANT delete 750 minerals (30 kills) in 0,1 seconds from 1 shot with zero micro required for said shot.... THAT is f-ed.

Mines need a goddamn splash radious nerf, there is NO WAY it should be able to cover an area that kills THIRTY units.
Great games. In game 3 Clem made two quite big errors in the early game - he left the door open and let lings in. If Zerg is out of position just once in this stage of the game, it is game over for Zerg.
Zerg also has way more vision with creep, lings and overlords. So letting marines or hellions into your base and being completely out of position at this stage is a poor comparison. Clem reacted incredibly quickly with insane speed/skill to limit the damage
@@PiGCasts Well, the Terran could just have the Depot up. And only lower it when he actually needs to let a unit out. Quite a lot of effort? Sure, but e.g. creepspread and inject requires constant action too. Spreading creep or upping and downing a depot is not different. That Clem played amazing was never in question btw.

So its true, that Clem is capable of playing both style at this point which is great for him.
like my granma-once removed on the center diagonal side- used to say, "slather me in honey, and bury me beside an anthill; we are in a pickle."
Game 3 was the game of the year without any question
insane comeback for sure
I was at Dreamhack and game 3 was insane! Serral like a shark circling and giving Clem so many opportunities to fumble or mess up. The vikings intercepting the drop overlords was so clutch!
I've watched this yesterday. Just really hope they get you cast these events.
Damn its good to see terran players beating Serral :D
I watched these games live and, although all the casters did a good job, no one holds a candle to your analysis, banter, and hype.
Thank you Jared the caster ... you made my day

alcyone and oceanborn games was so darn good.
There is no Zerg counter to defensive mass ghosts.
Ultras giving out free hugs lol
Wow! What an insane series. Clem is my hero!!!
Zerg still OP though....
-remove spore trick (can't morph if damaged in last 1 or 2 seconds)
-reduce vision of burrowed Zerg units
-morphing ravengers shouldn't regain health
-spore crawls/spines shouldn't be able to move (cannons/turrets can't)
-vipers should have to Regen mana like all spell casters
-infestors moving while burrowed should cause a more visible animation.
I would say spores crawls should be slow to move or they should take twice the amount of time to borrow
Another one I would add is Hellbates are able to tank more baneling hits because they seem like a pointless unit
Clem felt like Maru on the last game.
Frustrating watching serral but good cast

agree with this take somewhat, I still think Serrel is definitely the greatest Zerg ever and has amazing skills, just does feel like Terrans have to "dodge more bullets" in big battles than Zerg players who remax in 10 seconds

@@SPQR_14 Mate, you must be out of your mind to think ghost is the BEST spellcaster. Its ONLY offensive spell is micro intensive and can only affect SINGLE ENEMY UNITs at a time and it VERY SITUATIONAL, and Terran has ZERO offensive spells that affect MULTIPLE enemy units that works in ALL SiTUATIONS - SNIPE only works on FEW enemy units at a time, it is useless when theres tide after tide of zerglings/banes, AND you literally have to click on each single enemy unit - it is NOT momentum changing spell, it merely stems the offensive tide unless ZERG is stupid enough to only make Ultras (perhaps that's you? No other way for me to explain why you think ghost is strongest unless you keep getting ass kicked by ghosts, but that is besides the point). The EMP is purely defensive with no DAMAGE repercussion - but if you miss EMP'ing enemy spell casters Terran gets screwed.
ZERG spell casters on the other hand, has MULTIPLE offensive spells requiring ZERO micro skills, and they are effective in NEARLY ALL SITUATIONS, with SINGLE click affecting LARGE groups or AREA - PARASITIC bomb nearly kills Medi vacs and damages nearby units, works in nearly all bio units; FUNGAL is a totally momentum changing spell, entire group of units can be lost, works in ALL SITUATIONS, BIO or MECH - ABDUCT is extremely effective with its LONG reach, works in ALL SITUATIONS and stages of game (bio for medivacs, devastating for MECHs), BLIndING CLoud - single click affects large area, is absolutely devastating, works in ALL SITUATIONS.
Look up description of Viper on SC2 Liquipedia - it says "The Viper does not attack. Instead, it uses its spells to disrupt the positioning of enemy units" - that should have been their role, but why in the world did they buff them by giving them parasitic bombs? They were already very powerful even before that.
Meanwhile, Ravens were nerfed to the point that they've become nearly completely useless in pro tournaments in TvZ.

You cant fight Blord with just Ghost, you need Lib/Thors/Hellbat which will force Clem to change his army composition and approach. You sound like 20 Ghost can just amove and snipe down 16 BLord like nothing. Maybe against you playing Zerg, not Serral.
