845ToastT That's just how Paul is, he doesn't just say "you're wrong", he takes the time, and spends the money, to show you not only if you are incorrect, but shows you the correct way of doing things as well. Plus he does it without being a douche. He comes off as being a genuinely helpful guy in my book, I know some people hate being corrected and all, but I like to learn and if my current knowledge in a particular area is incorrect I definitely want to be corrected. You wind up better for it.

As a practicing attorney who has engaged in criminal defense cases, let me say I appreciate the constant reminder to viewers about the considerations that could be useful in managing and mitigating the legal consequences of a shooting. If you have not faced a prosecutor's office before, let me assure you that as soon as you do something potentially illegal, your entire life of law abiding citizenship suddenly counts for next to nothing and these factors that Paul points out will matter and can decide whether you go to prison or not. Thanks for the videos Paul, your content is very well rounded and incredibly well presented.
Just out of curiosity I did some testing myself with my 229, Cz75b, and Glock 48. I found that the gun had to be canted (top side towards wall, bottom side away, ie the exact opposite way you'd can't when leaning around a left corner) and held extremely close to the wall. And that was just to get the casings to hit the slide, let alone have them stove-pipe.
I really like that you say “you be the judge” rather than “this is absolutely the right way” or “you’re dumb if you do it this way”. Thanks for being so flexible in your teaching, many people don’t think about the many situations that you might be in and how in one situation one way may be right, but in another situation the another would be much more effective. In my time spent with the marine corps not a single teacher has taught us MOUT (military operations in an urban terrain) the same. Not a bad thing as it teaches you different ways to do things the way you prefer. Lesson here: USE YOUR BRAIN AND KEEP CALM.

Congratulations My I add a little advise? When I buy a new hand gun, I also buy extra magazines, enough to make 12 total. I also search out a holster and mag holders, with the appropriate belt. Such that I can load-up the 12 mags, carry them on the belt with the gun in the holster. It sure beats loading mags at the shooting range. It also looks cool hanging from your bed post, I actually keep the gun in a safe, and the loaded "rig" in my closet. Although this isn't cheep, for the Glock I would use an Austrian military surplus belt, mag holders, and holster. In some cases the "rig" can cost more than the gun, but style in class are never cheap. You will soon find that the ability to comfortably carry the gun and ammunition on a belt makes you more mobile. It frees up your hands for other things. And you will not have to tumbled through loose ammunition.

I'm up! He sees me! I'm down. ....God I have nightmares of repeating that drill, over and over and over and over and over again. Shooting while moving backwards.. hell moving backwards at all.. is something I was instructed by some high-speed pipe hitters to *NEVER* do. I'm talking Green Berets and Recon/Snipers, Jedi gun-slingers, who say they don't do it because the potential to trip and fall is just too great. Especially at night. If you need to move, look for your next piece of cover, turn, and move with a purpose. Bound to it and get behind it. Shooting while moving forward, on the other hand, is a skill to be practiced because sometimes it is adventageous to be aggressive and close the gap, especially if you are caught with no avenue of escape behind you.
I only had to use that once in real world and it was going from cover to cover. It made me feel a little more comfortable making sure I wasn't spending too much time in the open between bounds.
That's old school saying not to shoot and walk backwards. You slide your feet backwards in a half circle motion inwards to feel for things you can trip on. Did they tell you not to cant the weapon too?
What if the threat you’re facing down is an advancing mountain lion, or a pack of wolves? They’ll probably beat you to your “next piece of cover” long before you will. Or a crackhead advancing on you with a knife that you can’t take your eyes off of? This is why Paul always cautions us from using words like “never” or “always”. Shooting tips always depend on the context of situation they’re applied to. Dude must’ve missed that video.
@@kingofwishfulthinking2490 all three of those cases can be solved by just shooting the damn thing that's threatening you, and if shooting doesn't work then cover is the least of your concern whether you backed up or turned and ran to get to it. I believe the topic of this demonstration was focused on fighting specifically other people who also had guns; because, if the threat doesn't have a gun and isn't right next to you, there's usually little reason to be moving and shooting simultaneously (or even just moving at all) rather than just shooting.
I just cant believe anybody would question Paul. After all the videos I have seen, he always says there is alot more to this then what I'm showing you now .
I always look forward to Paul's videos. I love how he used three different weapons to demonstrate that whoever made that incorrect comment was in fact, incorrect. Like Paul always says "Good science is verifiable, falsifiable, and repeatable."And the tactical reload is ALWAYS a good idea. The last thing you want to do is move to different cover and only have one round left in the magazine.
In case anyone as wondering what movie Paul was referring to with the "SERPENTINE, SHELL!" line, it was The Inlaws, with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin. I beleive it came out around 1978. It is a film I would highly recommend,
At first glance, the idea that a wall up against the ejection port might cause problems seems plausible, and maybe even likely. I love the way Paul, both here and elsewhere, puts these "common sense" ideas to the test with his honest, "let's find out" approach. It makes you wonder how much other stuff that "everyone knows" isn't true either. Keep it up. Another great video.
That left side of cover myth is a classic. One of my biggest pet peeves nowadays is the predominance of SOF/SWAT tactics in self-defense firearms training. You made the point very well: infantry's basic mission is to locate, close with, and destroy the enemy in close combat. SOF and SWAT tactics are adaptations of infantry tactics to high-risk ASSAULT scenarios. As a typical armed citizen, there are very few scenarios in which collapsing the gap in a gun fight is going to be a good idea. There are even fewer where standing still, squared up on an armed aggressor is going to be a good idea. Even for a seasoned pro who spent 20 yrs in body armor and has a number of firefights behind him, chances are extremely slim that they will be wearing body armor in the supermarket parking lot at 8:30 PM in Tifton, Georgia, after they retire. That gallon of milk and your hoodie are NOT going to stop a bullet. There is a rare case where collapsing the gap could be beneficial...like moving TO the nearest cover or fighting TO a rifle with a hand gun or moving TO a wounded person to get them to cover. I also love the "stay back from cover" myth. The ROT is don't UNNECESSARILY CROWD/HUG cover. I wonder how many people who repeat the mantra actually know why? Hint: it is NOT the ninja hiding on the other side waiting to take your gun by the barrel and disarm you.
I was so annoyed at the competition I participated in at my local range. They claimed it was some police exercise and during one of the weeks had the range set up to fire as you moved from cover to cover. My point, which was demonstrated by everyones lower scores that week, was that it is far more effective to move very quickly to the next cover and then take your well aimed shots from there.
I gotta admit. I do enjoy when something is put to the test in a non biased way. Instead of dismissing it, Paul says, let's try and recreate it. Keep up the good work.

Saw the length of the video before I clicked and thought "Wow, there must be a lot to cover in this one." Then it turned out he spends half the video trying to reproduce a malfunction some commenter told him would happen, just to demonstrate the commenter was wrong. Paul Harrell you are awesome.
Really love your content, you do a great job of portraying your message. You are clearly an expert, but you don’t gatekeep knowledge. You will talk down against those that pretend to know everything, but provide clear detail to those who know they don’t. Keep up the great work!
Just a point I thought of in my training - shuffle your feet means DON'T CROSS THEM while you're moving as you'll likely trip yourself in a real scenario. Notice Paul doing it the correct way - if you have to really run for a short burst then just run with your weapon safely and don't attempt shooting but if you need to shoot accurately AND move shuffling is the way to go - I just wanted to emphasize this important point.
Unlike Training on the mess decks, Paul knows how the keep people interested in what he is trying to make a point of. I believe that Paul go's through what I call personality focus addressing everyone. He sells his ideas and thoughts to the viewer without turning it into all about him,,, It's about You. I have never been disappointed in any of his videos. Dave.

Always good information, it kinda sucks for one of the last comments you said which is true that you probably shouldn’t move towards the threat . I’ve always been fair at playing paint ball ( I know it’s only paint ball) during a field trip with my son the school schedule a week end space camp trip for the students. Anyway the group of parents including my self were entertained with some paintball battles against some young ROTC guys ( in their 20s) during these battles I was able to organize the parents in fire teams and we wiped out the young solders and on another battle I flanked the young soldiers and killed 3 of them needless to say the young soldiers never were beaten by parents before and I was invited to join their team against incoming group . I’ve never been in the military but we grew up hunting and playing army , lol. what im try to say is sometimes you may see an option that moving forward will be a goood defense.
You made a stellar point about a 'defender' being held accountable for his stray shots by investigating authorities. These same authorities may choose to be much harder on the 'defender' than on the instigating perp; another reason it's called the 'criminal' justice system. Side note- After the muss & fuss of an incident, fully cooperate a police officers directives so you, the 'defender', is not mistaken for the perp. After a crime scene is fully secured, do what the perps (provided they survive your counter measures) do and request a lawyer right then and there. There'll be time enough to give a statement and answer questions with legal counsel present after the gunsmoke clears and you're safe to tell the tale.

To even say that happened to every student of a single class was idiotic at the least.so I just wanted to say thank you for your demonstration and keep up the great videos.
That's why I love this channel. It's all about practicality. Sure, shooting an AR upside down and one handed has some value but in reality, most of us have limited time and resources and we should spend those practicing techniques that are more realistic. Paul is great at reality, also, he is one of the few that actually backs up his claims. He built the meat man target and the drywall house just to demonstrate his points. Hard to argue with that.

I love your channel and the fact that you are involved with your channels commenters. Please don't let trolls get to you. I'm going to suggest you create a new group of people. It's called trolls. They have the following traits. They speak in absolutes. They tell "was stories". Most will nitpick about subjects they know little about. They care little about the time and effort people put into things. There usual goal is to create an emotional response such as anger or obvious frustration. I find the best thing to do when someone is trolling me on the web or on a mature radio is just to ignore. I move on to the next commenter or station. I usually laugh at their attempts. Trolls like to feel like they are an expert in something by trying to belittle others contributions to a subject. From hobbies, to gardenting, to brewing, to firearms. There are trolls abound. When shooting around the left side of cover, it looks like the spent brass deflecting into your face is a bigger concern than some kind of reverse stovepipe.

About the only issue of having a case bounce off, and cause an issue I've seen. Was at the range, I had a 5.56 case bounce off the stall, and stick between my glasses, And the side of my head, and burn the shit outta my temple!
I've had that happened at an indoor range twice shooting handguns and I'm proud to say that I kept my gun pointed downrange and finger off the trigger :) I've also had cases bounce off the wall and into the top of my t-shirt which taught me to wear tighter t-shirts or button down shirts with the top button closed.
Firing out of the back of a truck in Iraq I took a brass shower... was on the wrong side of the saw gunner. Not by choice or accidentally just how it happened to be when bullets started flying. Not fun at all but not scared for life.
Some Rhodesian soldier managed to have brass bounce off the handle on his FAL and go into his eye, and he lost the eye. That's famously the reason they cut all the carry handles off their FALs. An absolute freak occurrence, but it happens.
Paul is an example of intelligence... Just for thought: If an ejected case were to deflect off a wall back into the slide chamber causing a malfunction, that spend case at the moment of full ejection would have to accelerate at twice the velocity being ejected to make it back into the slide-chamber before the slide has time to begin its return action to chamber another round? Also, such a deflection off the wall given the ejected exit-angle must hit the wall at such a way that the deflected adjective complementary angle of deflection returns the case back towards to the still opened slide? Also assuming that regardless of recoil movement... Oh just thinking of that movement brings on a lot more possibilities if we could get pass the near light speed of the ejected case. Ah, this is why I like firearms...
that casual slide release on the FN mag change --- great unspoken lesson that when training with your off hand --- you need to involve other aspects of gun manipulation other than just shooting --- which I am guilty of. So I have done some off hand shooting --- but then I just put the gun back in my right hand to change mags, rack the slide, and whatever. Then shoot some more with my left hand. Time for some more training. Thanks Paul! You are the best.

Yeah, the good story material tends to be pretty tough on the old adrenal glands! Used to be crewed with a fantastic Irish paramedic who was a renowned "trauma magnet", eye opening stuff when you've just started the job... all the stories and experience are great afterwards, but you start wondering if someone upstairs has a sick sense of humor at times. Managed to get magnatised too, there was one extremely experienced paramedic who literally refused to work with me (if she possibly could). The look on her face when she arrived as backup on a major job was priceless, "how did I guess it would be you, Doctor Death calling for Hot1 backup!". Being an EMT, she was actually brilliant to have around, she managed to save a baby born 20 WEEKS prematurely.. there's only so much you can do as an EMT. Sure kept me on my toes though, legend of the Shit-Magnet!
The only thing missing from this video is a Gold Medal for Paul doing everything short of jumping hurdles while firing expertly! Great video Paul....all practical applications we can practice to improve our individual skill sets. You really should release a DVD set containing these, and your DCS videos......I’d buy them!

My I add a little advise?
When I buy a new hand gun, I also buy extra magazines, enough to make 12 total. I also search out a holster and mag holders, with the appropriate belt. Such that I can load-up the 12 mags, carry them on the belt with the gun in the holster. It sure beats loading mags at the shooting range. It also looks cool hanging from your bed post, I actually keep the gun in a safe, and the loaded "rig" in my closet.
Although this isn't cheep, for the Glock I would use an Austrian military surplus belt, mag holders, and holster. In some cases the "rig" can cost more than the gun, but style in class are never cheap.
You will soon find that the ability to comfortably carry the gun and ammunition on a belt makes you more mobile. It frees up your hands for other things. And you will not have to tumbled through loose ammunition.

Shooting while moving backwards.. hell moving backwards at all.. is something I was instructed by some high-speed pipe hitters to *NEVER* do. I'm talking Green Berets and Recon/Snipers, Jedi gun-slingers, who say they don't do it because the potential to trip and fall is just too great. Especially at night. If you need to move, look for your next piece of cover, turn, and move with a purpose. Bound to it and get behind it. Shooting while moving forward, on the other hand, is a skill to be practiced because sometimes it is adventageous to be aggressive and close the gap, especially if you are caught with no avenue of escape behind you.

I only had to use that once in real world and it was going from cover to cover. It made me feel a little more comfortable making sure I wasn't spending too much time in the open between bounds.
That's old school saying not to shoot and walk backwards. You slide your feet backwards in a half circle motion inwards to feel for things you can trip on.

What if the threat you’re facing down is an advancing mountain lion, or a pack of wolves?
They’ll probably beat you to your “next piece of cover” long before you will.
Or a crackhead advancing on you with a knife that you can’t take your eyes off of?
This is why Paul always cautions us from using words like “never” or “always”. Shooting tips always depend on the context of situation they’re applied to.

@@kingofwishfulthinking2490 all three of those cases can be solved by just shooting the damn thing that's threatening you, and if shooting doesn't work then cover is the least of your concern whether you backed up or turned and ran to get to it. I believe the topic of this demonstration was focused on fighting specifically other people who also had guns; because, if the threat doesn't have a gun and isn't right next to you, there's usually little reason to be moving and shooting simultaneously (or even just moving at all) rather than just shooting.

I always look forward to Paul's videos. I love how he used three different weapons to demonstrate that whoever made that incorrect comment was in fact, incorrect. Like Paul always says "Good science is verifiable, falsifiable, and repeatable."And the tactical reload is ALWAYS a good idea. The last thing you want to do is move to different cover and only have one round left in the magazine.

In case anyone as wondering what movie Paul was referring to with the "SERPENTINE, SHELL!" line, it was The Inlaws, with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin. I beleive it came out around 1978. It is a film I would highly recommend,
At first glance, the idea that a wall up against the ejection port might cause problems seems plausible, and maybe even likely. I love the way Paul, both here and elsewhere, puts these "common sense" ideas to the test with his honest, "let's find out" approach. It makes you wonder how much other stuff that "everyone knows" isn't true either. Keep it up. Another great video.

That left side of cover myth is a classic. One of my biggest pet peeves nowadays is the predominance of SOF/SWAT tactics in self-defense firearms training. You made the point very well: infantry's basic mission is to locate, close with, and destroy the enemy in close combat. SOF and SWAT tactics are adaptations of infantry tactics to high-risk ASSAULT scenarios. As a typical armed citizen, there are very few scenarios in which collapsing the gap in a gun fight is going to be a good idea. There are even fewer where standing still, squared up on an armed aggressor is going to be a good idea. Even for a seasoned pro who spent 20 yrs in body armor and has a number of firefights behind him, chances are extremely slim that they will be wearing body armor in the supermarket parking lot at 8:30 PM in Tifton, Georgia, after they retire. That gallon of milk and your hoodie are NOT going to stop a bullet. There is a rare case where collapsing the gap could be beneficial...like moving TO the nearest cover or fighting TO a rifle with a hand gun or moving TO a wounded person to get them to cover. I also love the "stay back from cover" myth. The ROT is don't UNNECESSARILY CROWD/HUG cover. I wonder how many people who repeat the mantra actually know why? Hint: it is NOT the ninja hiding on the other side waiting to take your gun by the barrel and disarm you.

I was so annoyed at the competition I participated in at my local range. They claimed it was some police exercise and during one of the weeks had the range set up to fire as you moved from cover to cover. My point, which was demonstrated by everyones lower scores that week, was that it is far more effective to move very quickly to the next cover and then take your well aimed shots from there.

The person that commented about a casing bouncing off cover and going back into the ejection port causing a “reverse stovepipe” and happening constantly has to be just about the most hilarious thing I’ve ever heard. And saying it happened to EVERY student in class just proves that trolls will tell an obvious lie to try to prove they are right…..when they know they’re wrong. Just a point I thought of in my training - shuffle your feet means DON'T CROSS THEM while you're moving as you'll likely trip yourself in a real scenario. Notice Paul doing it the correct way - if you have to really run for a short burst then just run with your weapon safely and don't attempt shooting but if you need to shoot accurately AND move shuffling is the way to go - I just wanted to emphasize this important point.

Always good information, it kinda sucks for one of the last comments you said which is true that you probably shouldn’t move towards the threat . I’ve always been fair at playing paint ball ( I know it’s only paint ball) during a field trip with my son the school schedule a week end space camp trip for the students. Anyway the group of parents including my self were entertained with some paintball battles against some young ROTC guys ( in their 20s) during these battles I was able to organize the parents in fire teams and we wiped out the young solders and on another battle I flanked the young soldiers and killed 3 of them needless to say the young soldiers never were beaten by parents before and I was invited to join their team against incoming group . I’ve never been in the military but we grew up hunting and playing army , lol. what im try to say is sometimes you may see an option that moving forward will be a goood defense.
You made a stellar point about a 'defender' being held accountable for his stray shots by investigating authorities. These same authorities may choose to be much harder on the 'defender' than on the instigating perp; another reason it's called the 'criminal' justice system. Side note- After the muss & fuss of an incident, fully cooperate a police officers directives so you, the 'defender', is not mistaken for the perp. After a crime scene is fully secured, do what the perps (provided they survive your counter measures) do and request a lawyer right then and there. There'll be time enough to give a statement and answer questions with legal counsel present after the gunsmoke clears and you're safe to tell the tale.

Paul the only thing I have to say about the reverse stove pipe on every shot of every student in this one class. Your demonstration was Savage. To even say that happened to every student of a single class was idiotic at the least.so I just wanted to say thank you for your demonstration and keep up the great videos.
That's why I love this channel. It's all about practicality. Sure, shooting an AR upside down and one handed has some value but in reality, most of us have limited time and resources and we should spend those practicing techniques that are more realistic. Paul is great at reality, also, he is one of the few that actually backs up his claims. He built the meat man target and the drywall house just to demonstrate his points. Hard to argue with that.

I love your channel and the fact that you are involved with your channels commenters. Please don't let trolls get to you. I'm going to suggest you create a new group of people. It's called trolls. They have the following traits. They speak in absolutes. They tell "was stories". Most will nitpick about subjects they know little about. They care little about the time and effort people put into things. There usual goal is to create an emotional response such as anger or obvious frustration. I find the best thing to do when someone is trolling me on the web or on a mature radio is just to ignore. I move on to the next commenter or station. I usually laugh at their attempts. Trolls like to feel like they are an expert in something by trying to belittle others contributions to a subject. From hobbies, to gardenting, to brewing, to firearms. There are trolls abound. I hate it when you have that frustrated look. It's so much cooler when you are happy doing your thing.

About the only issue of having a case bounce off, and cause an issue I've seen. Was at the range, I had a 5.56 case bounce off the stall, and stick between my glasses, And the side of my head, and burn the shit outta my temple!
I've had that happened at an indoor range twice shooting handguns and I'm proud to say that I kept my gun pointed downrange and finger off the trigger :)
I've also had cases bounce off the wall and into the top of my t-shirt which taught me to wear tighter t-shirts or button down shirts with the top button closed.

Firing out of the back of a truck in Iraq I took a brass shower... was on the wrong side of the saw gunner. Not by choice or accidentally just how it happened to be when bullets started flying. Not fun at all but not scared for life.
Some Rhodesian soldier managed to have brass bounce off the handle on his FAL and go into his eye, and he lost the eye. That's famously the reason they cut all the carry handles off their FALs. An absolute freak occurrence, but it happens.

Paul is an example of intelligence... Just for thought: If an ejected case were to deflect off a wall back into the slide chamber causing a malfunction, that spend case at the moment of full ejection would have to accelerate at twice the velocity being ejected to make it back into the slide-chamber before the slide has time to begin its return action to chamber another round? Also, such a deflection off the wall given the ejected exit-angle must hit the wall at such a way that the deflected adjective complementary angle of deflection returns the case back towards to the still opened slide? Also assuming that regardless of recoil movement... Oh just thinking of that movement brings on a lot more possibilities if we could get pass the near light speed of the ejected case. Ah, this is why I like firearms...

that casual slide release on the FN mag change --- great unspoken lesson that when training with your off hand --- you need to involve other aspects of gun manipulation other than just shooting --- which I am guilty of. So I have done some off hand shooting --- but then I just put the gun back in my right hand to change mags, rack the slide, and whatever. Then shoot some more with my left hand. Time for some more training. Thanks Paul! You are the best.

Yeah, the good story material tends to be pretty tough on the old adrenal glands! Used to be crewed with a fantastic Irish paramedic who was a renowned "trauma magnet", eye opening stuff when you've just started the job... all the stories and experience are great afterwards, but you start wondering if someone upstairs has a sick sense of humor at times.
Managed to get magnatised too, there was one extremely experienced paramedic who literally refused to work with me (if she possibly could). The look on her face when she arrived as backup on a major job was priceless, "how did I guess it would be you, Doctor Death calling for Hot1 backup!". Being an EMT, she was actually brilliant to have around, she managed to save a baby born 20 WEEKS prematurely.. there's only so much you can do as an EMT. Sure kept me on my toes though, legend of the Shit-Magnet!
The only thing missing from this video is a Gold Medal for Paul doing everything short of jumping hurdles while firing expertly! Great video Paul....all practical applications we can practice to improve our individual skill sets. You really should release a DVD set containing these, and your DCS videos......I’d buy them!
