      I completely agree--he leaves out the self-aggrandisement and gets on with technique.
      Not that I have anyone in mind, you understand, but it seems that some firearms instructors regard a goatee and a shaved head as an essential part of the tacticool uniform.

      As a former correctional officer, de-escalation was my main tactic. It is a lifelong practice I feel comfortable with, but I think having a firearm would change things; particularly as a private citizen. I look forward to you getting into this, even if you have to periodically or sporadically kill a pop bottle for fun and frolic.

    • @rippin187
      @rippin187 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is absolutely merit in not using the slide release. The main one being under extreme stress you lose quite a bit of fine motor dexterity. It is much easier to grab the back of your slide with your support hand and pull back as hard as you can towards your shoulder to rack the slide, versus using a slide release.
      You must understand that these firearm techniques are derived for the average person. Not someone who is extremely calm under very high amounts of stress. For the average person I still believe that not using the slide release is the more prudent method of reloading.

      Just from my experience with an M9, using the slide release is MORE reliable when using Beretta 30 round mags. Slingshotting it was only about 50 percent effective, even when I really made a conscious effort to get that slide all the way back before letting go. It showcased the fact that slingshotting can be a less crisp movement, even if you do it right. That slide release dropping from the slide is just the most efficient and crisp motion, it's weird to explain. Also, Desert Sky, hand size is a factor. If ya got average or small hands, its not as natural to use the slide release.

    I use the slingshot method on all my pistols because my EDC is a Beretta Nano and it doesn't have a slide release. Nano has replaced my Glock for EDC. I want to be consistent in the operations of all my pistols because there are times I will carry the Glock (going out of town for example) and don't want to get confused using different methods on different guns.

    Something worth mentioning about the European style mag catch: It's hard to beat on a pocket pistol. I've carried a Walther PPK/S in my hip pocket before, and the magazine would be ejected while sitting. This will not happen with the mag release on the heel. Also, if a pocket pistol is carried in a purse, or any other kind of bag, there's no worry of the magazine being ejected inadvertently. If nothing else, the European release is secure.

    I have just found your channel Paul! Just amazing practical wisdom at work! We share much of the same attitudes and philosophies on these things! Ive found some very useful tips for any combat situation, which combat is combat period, in the book of five rings. Its sounds unrelated but uses some very practical wisdom. Such as putting objects between you and attacker. What we call cover. As well as using cover to stack opponents into a line. Theory being that they cant attack thru each other. Thats advanced, I admit. My point is that we must conquer our fear enough to stay aware and thinking. The old adage the mind is the weapon thing. Its just really, practically, true. Back then, we were taught to use the slingshot method, due to not being able to find the small slide release as compared to the large slide when under stress in a combat situation. That being said, we were using glocks, so it was easier to do, didn't have a safety or decocking lever to obstruct your hand. Thanks again for what you do, cheers!

    I like the slingshot reloading style just since it can be used basically without thinking on any semi auto pistol and you don't have to worry about missing the slide release if some are sleeker than others (just building muscle memory). Also, when I used to use the slide release, there were a few times where under stress I would drop the empty mag, but then inadvertently hit the slide release juuuust before the new loaded mag was fully seated, leaving me (unknowingly) with an empty chamber. I just like the simplicity of the slingshot method and how it allows you to clearly see what is going on the whole time (your hands aren't in the way). It's also the movement that you would make to clear a malfunction, so again just building more muscle memory.

    Paul, I love your videos and you may have noticed since I have recently commented on a few of them. You have replied to any questions I've posted so far, to which I say thanks. I'm sure with all you do, it's difficult to stay up on replying to the comments, especially on some of the older videos.
    Between military, law enforcement and sport shooting, I have been shooting for 22 years. Most of my training on how to shoot, move and communicate come from military and LE instructors and I have learned from a variety of instructors. For practical experience, I have been in combat in Iraq and in a shooting as a LEO.
    In regards to reloading when the slide is locked back on an auto loading pistol, I recall a majority of instructors taught (and some really stressed) the over-hand technique, but for a reason I rarely see mentioned anywhere else. The overhand technique is a gross motor skill where as using a finger tip to press the slide lock release is a fine motor skill. The idea is to develop muscle memory to do the overhand technique because under the type of stress experienced during a shooting situation, loss of fine motor skills is one of the physiological effects we experience and cannot control, along with auditory exclusion, tunnel vision and constriction of the arteries in the arms and legs to bring max blood flow to the heart and lungs. Same with the bolt catch release on the M-16 platform of weapons; a vast majority of instructors I learned from teach to slap that paddle area with the palm of an open hand, a gross motor skill, instead of using a single finger tip to locate and press the button. With this approach to reloading action, what say you?
    I am aware that pressing the magazine release button on most modern firearms is a fine motor skill action that inherently contradict this philosophy, to which I can only answer, "there's no other choice in that matter, unless gun designs change significantly."

    • @PaulHarrell
      @PaulHarrell  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just saw your comment. Good point. I frequently use over hand to chamber a round, but for reloading when the slide is locked back I have not found it necessary on most pistols. For some people/guns it could be a very good idea.

    awesome content. Regarding reloading one handed with a euro style magazine...once empty, tuck weapon under armpit with mag well out, remove mag with undamaged hand while holding weapon in place with upper arm/shoulder, retrieve second mag and load it into weapon, use slide release to drop slide and go back to work. my kel tec pmr made me think to use this technique, as you say, that aspect could have been designed better. i digress, you are easily my favorite gun channel, keep the info coming!

    Outstanding series, Paul! I especially like the fact that as questions formed in what I laughingly call my mind, you answered them almost immediately. Very glad I subscribed! Keep up the good work! Also I spewed coffee when you whipped that black powder cannon out of your jacket!

    I use the slide stop/release but I’ve heard the argument that in a high stress situation during an adrenaline dump you lose ur gross motor skills and the over the top method is what they recommend, my thing is I’ve been using the slide stop my whole life and I think muscle memory would take over, Hope I never have to find out, great vid.
