All good advice. It always blows my mind when I see someone get pulled over for speeding when they’re trafficking drugs I can’t even imagine having a body in the trunk! Wear your damn seatbelt make sure your DL and registration is all up to date and good, and don’t break any traffic laws!! Is that really so hard to do when the outcome of a routine traffic stop could be 15+ years imprisonment
This was actually an exceptional cop. He was very calm, respectful, yet thorough. He needs to teach all the ignorant and ego-driven cops.

@@shadowprince4482I'm not sure exactly how it works but I've heard the trunk is different than the car. If probable cause to search the car exists it doesn't necessarily exist to look in the trunk. Cannabis is legal in California so it doesn't give automatic probable cause the way it does in other states. The bullet holes most likely do give probable cause to search everything though.

Not gonna lie: I found it refreshing to watch a cop taking it slowly and carefully for a change. He kept control of the scene (which was intermittently pretty chaotic) but was not in a rush to act, and good for him.
I kept saying call for back up. I don't know what took him so long.

He was most likely afraid He could be called a racist and jailed if something happed. He'll get shoot one day because He is not carful.
The only issue I have is not hand cuffing him sooner. That cop could have gotten himself killed.
He's actually highly praised for being so professional and careful. He didn't just grab him and search. He was really thorough. That cop had great "Spidey senses"

I have been on both sides. However, this guy is a murderer and the officer could have been in immediate danger. Driving with no license or paperwork 20 mph over the speed limit with a marijuana smell; cuffs… immediately.

@shockvaluesracing well my experience of living on 3 different continents and witnessing 5 different murders and violence and going through A revolution etc etc etc i view the curent consumer humans as conditioned and programmed to save self only and therefore are far more savage like in behavior in the spirit of "i dont give a fuxk" and will ignore someone in need. Seen it over and over again. That's why I stay away from humans and live on a remote island because of my own personal experience with them. Good luck

He probably could have been more careful with the suspect as far as officer safety, but I think since the kid was staying so calm the officer was trying NOT to escalate the situation unnecessarily.

You can tell that cop was very disappointed and didnt want to have to charge that guy for any more than he had to, and crossed his Ts and dotted his i's while being so freaking polite and calm...the way he goes "yeaup" as soon as he pops the trunk, he had a gut feeling

I'm guessing that cop's department might have had issues with unlawful search in the past, because his patience and caution was legendary. I don't think there's a judge in the country that would have dared to question whether there was enough probable cause to search.
There was no way to make an illegal search in this case, not his car, car not borrowed to him, he doesn't have permission to use the car, the car is stolen.
An Illegal search at the onset would of held up in court, there was a recent supreme court case where they were dealing with rental cars being borrowed to someone else. The arrest got thrown out in that case but they went over this.
And this is where there is a problem with law. It allows murderers to get off scotch free on technicality.

I was impressed with the cop from the moment he had the kid hand over his phone to ensure he wasn't texting someone to come help him. Very good police work.
This is a great example of an officer actually taking his job seriously - he isn’t in it for the power trip or he’d have used any excuse to rough this kid up and exert power over him. He’s being so careful because he wants to preserve the integrity of the incident - he’s thinking of the future. It’s refreshing.
That's 99% of cops you just hear about the worst bc of the media usually a cop doing the norm doesn't get any attention. A cop acting out of norm gets all the attention

@@WookieWoman and honestly I know all cops aren’t all bad - ANY profession that gives people power will be abused by a lot of people who go into the field. I’ve worked in early childhood care and as a nanny and I can tell you - a HUGE portion of people who work with kids are HORRIBLE people. And then there are those who are wonderful. Or like teachers I’ve had in my life - most kind of sucked, but there were the handful who were incredible. Just want to be clear that I’m not so obtuse as to think it’s black and white.

I love this cop. I gotta say, he is one of the least egotistical officer I have ever seen. He's incredibly patient and level headed, not unnecessarily escalating, and genuinely not trying to find problems where none exist, but also aware enough to have a good bs detector. He seems like someone who is in his job for the right reasons, not as a power trip or excuse to thump skulls. This is how I want more police to be.
Then tell Society to get more act right into them and you'll see results... Hopefully. Possibly. Probably not.

Props to the cop, not only for his patience, but for being so thorough even though he can already already arrest the kid. I think he's just trying to 1. Be as safe as possible, 2. Make sure there are no loop holes that can be used to get him off. 3. He wants to cover every base so he can't be accused of profiling, fabricating evidence, etc.

The only thing that wasn't really common sense from him was that he choose not to put the guy in cuffs and made him hang out in front of his car while he was searching it. He could of booked it when he was only being watched over by one guy who isn't as fit as him, or decided that he isn't going to jail and tried fighting the cops.

I came here after watching the original video and I thought the same thing. Because of the description of the video. I was shocked to see how calm the kid was from the beginning. Then after watching it all play out, the only thing that comes to mind is that he wanted to be caught. He was done. Probably been driving around trying to figure what to do and when he saw those flashing lights, he just gave up. He did lie but he didn't try too hard to get out of anything. He knew the officer was going to find out where he lived. And how he broke down when they asked what happened, that's relief leaving his body that it's all over. JMO

He was probably initially thinking that it was a stolen vehicle, and the kid was joy riding. But when he saw the bullet holes, he knew that he was dealing with a more serious crime. And he did not want to screw it up. He probably doesn't get a stop like this every day.

That cop was 100% certain that there was something fishy there and he wanted to make sure that NOTHING he did could help the defense or hinder the prosecution. Excellent job, officer!
Maybe so, but it actually seems like he wasn’t in to it, for whatever reason. Maybe he was going on break in 20 minutes. He just has excellent observation skills, and couldn’t ignore them.

I agree, high IQ move there, he stayed calm, he knew he had the guy and the car pulled over so it didn't matter how long it took to get it straight it's worth it compared to the cost of what happens if it goes wrong. Excellent.
It’s tragic. Thinking about it, I consider how much hard work and effort the deceased put into being able to get that car, only to have someone he thought was his friend murder him and steal it while hiding his body in the trunk of his own car. Horribly tragic and condolences to the friends and family.

I'm a retired nurse and you deal with death often, BUT you have to feel for police officers who deal with the worst in our society and see such horrific forms of death .
Yep, that was what I was thinking about. In certain situations you are prepared for death (as much as you can be), but can’t imagine the shock when your body and mind aren’t prepared at all and you suddenly find a body
I’m going to a counselor at my university for it, but since you’re more familiar seeing it, do you have any advice for someone with a fear of aging and death? I’m in my early 20s and It started up last week and I haven’t been able to shake it.
@@StarfayeArt I know I’m not the one you asked, but I have a background in psychology so I just wanna give my 2 cents! Usually when there’s a fear of something, there’s a deeper meaning. I.e fear of vomit can be a fear of losing control. Or a fear of heights can be biological. That’s the rational part, trying to see what you fear specifically and why.
Then there is coping. Seeing what triggers any anxious thoughts. Giving yourself exposure and not completely avoiding it at all costs, because that will make the fear bigger over time. (By avoiding you tell yourself that it IS scary, you SHOULD be scared and you will get more scared).
Without knowing much context about you, I can not give any reaally helpful advice, but the biggest component I think, would be acceptance. Accepting and rationalizing death and aging as a normal component to life. Like it would be a mathematical problem. “2+2=4” and people age and pass away.
Then there are the normal coping mechanisms for when you feel a panic attack or anxiety attack: breathing, mindfulness, asmr, taking a walk, doing something that makes you happy. You can rewire your brain into making it less and less scary over time. You’re making the neural path weaker by associating the moment of fear, by doing something that calms the body+mind.
This is not something that will go away in a day, it takes practice.

Sociopaths have very low levels of anxiety, if any. They can stay calm in situations like this.

I was pleased how cautious the cop was about it all. He didn’t just yank him out and gut the car, he called the right people and triple checked his information even though the weed was more than enough cause to search without a warrant.
Should have cuffed the guy a lot sooner.

Tons of people have been mistreated in the hands of cops for minor offenses, some even while innocent. I'm glad this cop seemed determined not to be one of them.

When the police arrived they put me in cuffs and the back of a car for 4 hours before they then took me to the station for an interview. I know domestic violence is much more common than suicide, but what a way to make the worst day of my life even worse.

When asked if he’s alone he practically points to the trunk. The cop states he is going to do the obvious thing and the one thing he wanted to do the entire time is pop the trunk. With bullet holes in the driver side, missing driver of the vehicle I think he had a suspicion. He needed back up and definitely was dreading to pop the trunk. Definitely awesome cop with good instincts. He would make a great detective.
This happened a mile from my house here a few years ago. The black deputy is a great guy too. He has pulled me over 3 times in the past 5 years and always let me go w/o a ticket. Two of those times I was returning from Sonic w/ food and he noticed that and said, "Man get home before that Sonic gets cold". He's great as is Sheriff Kevin Cobb, the man at the very end who shows up.
Sonic will do that to ya! My excitement over DD Iced Coffee got me once.

You ever think that guy was just a 2nd party/car that followed him to make sure the body gets dumped. Maybe they had a backup follow to make sure everything went smooth or if anything went wrong i.e. getting pulled over with a body

Funny enough as a Louisiana resident, the state troopers and most sheriffs are often quite pleasant. City police seems to almost always be insane though.

What's most amazing is that the kid never tried to run. People run over warrants for petty drug charges, for shoplifting, for all kinds of minor nonsense, and they do it with four or six police on the scene. This kid is alone with one officer, a wooded area a short sprint away, and a body in the trunk, and he chills in front of the squad car while the officer gets closer and closer to the truth. Incredible.

Carjacking. When he said "I hit him" he wasnt describing an automobile accident. He shot the "Kid whose father bought him a Camaro" bc he wanted his car. The Policeman was PERFECT. He was very respectful of the young man. It was textbook. And thank God he followed his intuition.

See a dead body's not necessarily hard, We do it at funerals all the time, but discovering one when your not expecting it must be horrifyingly traumatic
It is. In 2017, two of my friends who were brothers and I were camping. When we went to sleep (they had separate tents, and I was sleeping in their van), one of them decided to use heroin and meth instead of sleeping. His brother woke up to find his body stiff and cold in the morning. The wails he made and whatnot upon finding him are something that I would not like to hear again. I was more just in a stunned silence.
How awful that must have been...
At funerals, the bodies have been embalmed, dressed in an outfit picked out by loved ones, and hair & make-up artists help them to look their best.
When you find one like the poor lad in the video, it's nowhere near as "sanitised". If it's fresh, there will be the smell from the bowels and bladder releasing on death. If it's not fresh, you'll have decomposition, which is a truly vile smell. Dependent on the methods of death and disposal, it can also be very messy and graphic... Add in the shock element to all of that and it becomes a sad reality that those who find bodies as part of their job often end up with PTSD - it really can be that bad.

Nicely groomed and decorated funeral dead bodies are not the same as dead bodies you see on the streets.
This is a very good example of the importance of bodycams and cops following procedure.
I really like how cautious the cop was being in this. We need more guys like him. He gave him the benefit of the doubt in every instance until the evidence of wrongdoing was too large to ignore. Kudos to him!

Really? I don't know why everybody is saying this. Ultimately I think that this could have turned out very tragic for this police officer. His guardian Angel must be doing overtime looking out for him. This seemed to me to be an absolute recipe for disaster. I hope this is not taught as a way to do things in any Police academy. Why on Earth would you turn your back on a potential suspect whom you just pulled over for speeding they have no driver's license they smell like marijuana they've admitted to having drugs in the car they've admitted that it is not their vehicle they don't know their address or they won't tell you their address and now you find bullet holes in car. And somehow you think that this cop is doing his job well. I hope he gets reprimanded for not immediately putting this kid in handcuffs searching him and calling for backup.

I’m a lawyer and I found my neighbour murdered several years ago. I was so freaked out my mind actually blocked out what I actually saw in that room but it still affected me for a long time. This stuff stays with you.
Yeah, I was right next to my friend when a cop blew his head off. I have vivid recurring nightmares of that incident replaying in slow motion.
Unlike lawyers, many people don't actually understand the consequences of being found near a dead body and what might happen, especially in today's society with complex legal systems. Any corrupt or malevolent law enforcement individual can fabricate charges, plant evidence, and coerce witness testimonies, often with support from their colleagues. This could result in anyone, regardless of guilt, being sentenced to life in prison.
I hope you find healing. A cop is like a health professional in training. The most empathetic ones are the best and learn how to separate themselves from trauma, before they are thrown into the field. Or, I hope they would get that training. I think the cop should be commended for not immediately throwing the kid in the back of his car and dragging him away. Seemed like he wanted to give the kid a break and not arrest him and the kid's lies (and the bullet holes) screwed him.
Yeah, no kidding. I'm only at 14:07 and I'm wondering why he hasn't cuffed the guy! This officer's calm is refreshing as hell. He seemed to be in no hurry to mess with the guy. Just calmly going about his job, with seemingly no bias or agenda.
This is how I think policing should be done. The only major mistake I think the cop made is that he didn't pat down the kid when he got him out of the car. He turned his back to the kid a couple of times before his backup arrived.

This cop showed a reluctance to escalate and a reluctance to infringe on this guy's rights. The cop was downright civil, collaborative, and respectful.

What are you nervous about? I've been stopped and frisked, approached by police loitering with friends, stopped twice fair evading and given a ticket once. Stopped packed in a car with friends, ran from police ditching school and caught stealing and the time I got detained loitering they took a knife off me. Never been in handcuffs or arrested. All of this stuff that was my fault or just police doing their job was when I was a kid. I can see why a teen would be nervous, but adults not really or rather, so nervous it's visible. I don't even buy into the whole cops are bad thing and I should be afraid because I'm black. As an adult, they don't even look my way and I got no issue talking to them or saying hello or anything. I don't get what an adult would be nervous about. They're just cops, they're not out to get you and if you didn't do anything what's the big deal? and if you did something minor, apologize, take your ticket or warning and go about your business.
Sometimes I think people give into false social ideas or they've been too coddled so any minor event shakes them up more than it should. Believe me, I rather have grown up less exposed to nonsense but seeing both sides of things gives perspective.

I’m such a wuss. I’ve only been pulled over once when I was 19 for speeding. I was having a ROUGH day so when he came to my window I was trying to hold it in but immediately when I said’ “I’m sorry” I started sobbing uncontrollably. This poor cop let me go without a ticket but I feel so bad I technically cried out of a ticket lol.

I did that once when I was about the same age. I was driving from Virginia to Georgia and was swerving a bit because it was towards the end of an 8 hour drive and I was admittedly getting tired. I was so scared but he was really nice about it lol
Cops generally don't really care about minor traffic offences. They pull you over because they 1 want you to stop doing it and 2 to see if there is something else like a DUI that they can get so as long as you are nice to them and don't have a dead body in the trunk they will usually let you go.

I get this vibe that the cop just really didn't wanna ruin some kids life. He told him he "ain't looking for no roach" when he smelled pot. He just took the kid's word that there was nothing more. When he confronts the kid about the lies, I hear dissappointment and frustration from the officer, and he then gives the kid a chance to be honest. When he talks to people on the phone I hear him asking someone else to tell him he's doing the right thing because he feels bad about it.

I watched this incredible video weeks ago. It haunted me. This cop gave the young man every chance to explain some things that just weren't adding up. I kept waiting for the kid to run or the cop get hurt, especially when the trunk was opened. I can't imagine the cop's shock. Poor guy, having to deal with this in a day's work, then go home to his family. I have great respect for him.
That officer deserves a lot of respect. He did his job well, used his head, stayed calm and, even though he was sure something was off, didn't over-react. This is the kind of policing that we need to see held up as an example.

What really got me about this entire encounter was how patient the officer was and how thorough he was. He wasn't a jerk, he wasn't soft. He was direct and professional. It was literally a masterclass on navigating through a guys BS without losing your composure. The only weird thing to me in this was how long it took for back-up when something clearly seemed suspicious to the officer. I don't know anything about anything, but if BR says he could get a warrant not sure why they'd overcomplicate this.

The sad thing is that the cop's instincts aren't necessarily "world-class," they're simply how cops SHOULD behave. Unfortunately that's such a rarity in our world that when we see cop's doing what they're supposed to do, we're in awe. Very eye-opening and tragic for the young life that was lost in this.
It seems to me like the cop is a good dude who genuinely didn't want to assume the worst of the kid.
He never used an unreasonable amount of force or aggression, even after he saw the body. There was a brief moment where he pulled out his gun and aimed it at the kid, but quickly realized the kid wasn't resisting and wasn't an actual threat. The gun was probably unnecessay, but I don't blame the guy at all for being a bit freaked out and on edge after seeing a dead person in the trunk, and he assessed that the actual danger was low pretty quickly and didn't continue to escalate.

This cop should be a detective. The way he went about approaching this situation slowly and carefully while all his instincts were probably screaming at him was a shining example of exemplary police work! This officer is more then cool and level headed enough to make a fantastic detective...
That kid was so calm. If he had a license and knew where registration and insurance was he might have gotten off with a warning.

That small gesture in the beginning when he asked the guy if he had a weapon and he said "yes", when the officer was like "its okay man" and shook his hand is SO crucial. It really sets the tone for the whole entire interaction (not to mention the officers exceptional conduct) which is hard for me to say but when you see it you gotta recognize it.

You can tell he listens to his intuition and most people's intuitions are right. Very smart, but it's obvious that Trooper Jessie Nielsen was _not_ a seasoned officer, hence why he touched all his bases before going forward with his search. He was extremely thorough precisely because he knows he isn't as experienced as his superiors and he doesn't want to mess up something huge due to his lack of experience, which is still a good model for other officeds to follow.
At the time of this stop, Nielsen had only been an LA State Trooper for 2 years. While well outside of being a trainee/rookie, he's not exactly a senior officer and would be considered intermediate level.

Definitely want to make sure this officer is recognized for the way he handled this stop. He was so respectful and professional the whole time, and even seemed sympathetic to the kid at the beginning. Should be the role model that all rookie cops aspire to be.
I feel so bad for the cop. You can feel how distressed he is. Too many people underestimate the stress and how difficult it is to be a police officer. Imagine the possibility of dealing with this everyday. Your everyday is someone's worse day. It's constant.

As an soldier stationed in South Korea(79-80) for the second time my immediate supervisors found out my hobby was photography. One of my duties soon became to go out and photograph the scenes that involved vehicles from our compound. I lost a buddy in an accident and it wasn't pretty. As an over-the-road driver 1991-2018 I saw more accidents than I probably should and some could possibly give you nightmares. I also drove in South Korea and always enjoyed the days I didn't come across a wreck. One thing I did learn photographing wrecks was how to read skid marks and debris.
Some people may say I don't let things like seeing dead or mangled bodies bother me but that's probably because I don't let it show. Oh, the things I can tell you...

@@Chuck_EL I am pretty sure that isn't what happened at all. If it was the car they wanted they wouldn't he shooting at the car. Clearly this was come beef they had. He even said he wasn't the one who shot him. He just hit him, he said. So likely there was a fight or altercation, he tried to run away, and they shot at his vehicle and he didn't survive. He was likely trying to remove the evidence. If they simply just wanted the car they putting him in the trunk of it and driving around with the license plate still on it. He clearly knew the guy when he confirmed his name so this wasn't some robbery.
This is exactly why whenever I am transporting a body (ies) in my trunk I always stay under the speed limit, use my turn signals and make sure my car is legal and in perfect working order.👍

Just a few thoughts from someone who has worked in this area. I feel like the reason he is being so cautious is he knows something is up and he doesn’t want to tamper with what he feels may be a potential crime scene. That’s why his is being so careful and calling around before he starts ripping the car up. Sports car theft is super high in the south

Honestly, it is refreshing to see non escalation on the part of the law enforcement officer/trooper.
As far as the speeding with a body in the trunk goes…and smoking weed probably concurrently…the rule I have always lived by, the rule I tell our children, is that if you are doing something which is majorly wrong, something which can get you into real trouble, do everything else absolutely right.
It’s the rule of golf attire: wear argyle socks and plain knickers OR wear a tam hat OR wear a loud jacket OR wear loudly patterned pants OR loudly patterned shirt…known as “The Rule of the Golf Pants.” Nobody but Rodney Dangerfield (or the richest guy at the club) gets away with unlimited garish attire. You choose one thing. One thing. Everything else has to be absolutely acceptable.
My father is a retired law enforcement officer. This gives me even more respect for him and what he did to provide for our family.

Me too I love Bruce he explains things so well and the fact he was a prosecutor before he was a defense attorney tells me he's got a conscience unlike alot of defence attorneys like Jose Biaz, how he could represent Casey Anthoney with a straight face blows my mind. If I was a defence attorney I would not take cases where the victim was a child.

Y’all desperately need some criminal Justice reform down there. Not quite as bad as Mississippi, but any state that doles out life sentences for being caught three times with a plant indigenous to North America is about as antiquated as dry towns.
I actually appreciate that he was so careful because for 1, (sorry, Bruce 😭) it makes it impossible for the defense to throw any of the evidence out based on how the trooper made contact with dude, the questions asked and how the car ended up searched (as I was typing this you mentioned this!)
2. The trooper knew there was something that didn't smell right (pun not intended!) and he was gonna take his time to leave no stone unturned. If that was my body in the trunk or that of my loved one, I'd appreciate this!
