Leftist here, I know the liberal perspective and partially agree with it. Liberals want to abolish the bail system because the rich can afford bail while poor people cannot. This leads to more situations like this being possible with rich convicts than with poor ones. The liberals' answer to this falls in two categories:
      1. Tie bail amount to % of annual net worth increase (salary + assets)
      2. Abolish the bail system and replace it with something else. Normally probationary period unless crime is serious, where no bail -> jail is established.
Meanwhile the anarchist I am wants there to be no prison system so lol.
It's still important to understand why other people want policies different than yours.

Love watching your takes, even as a widow of a LA Sheriff's deputy....Had to share with you an incident I had regarding bail: I was a court reporter working in a criminal court in Van Nuys, California when I got a buzz to go to my court room at 4:30 p.m. on a Friday afternoon -- we were the only court open. As I entered, every seat was full of evil looking bikers, and I mean standing room only. My judge was next to me as I entered and I said, "I think we need back up." It turns out, they were there turning in one of their own who had put his mother's house up for bail and they wanted to ensure he showed up, so they took it on themselves to turn him in.

My sweet elderly dog had sudden paralysis. Her entire body neck to feet. She could move her toes. Took her to thw veterinarian and he said he didnt see anything on the XRay but he wanted to do a spinal surgery and said it was probably something he wouldnt know about until he started OPERATING ON HER SPINE. As you probably know he wouldn't even begin to give us an estimate of how much he was going to charge because the fool was gonna charge so much he couldnt even look us in the eye and say the number! Lol anyway, we took her home, because there was no way we were going to do that, and my grandmother said to check her for ticks because she had a dog die after sudden paralysis when it woke up one morning and she suspected it was because of a tick she found on it afterwards. We DID find one HUGE tick on her and removed it. By the next morning she was walking, then by afternoon, running. I can't believe that vet tried to do a spinal surgery on a 12 year old dog, and charge us 5 figures, to remove a tick. He charged $400 just to look at her and do 1 xray. The tick was near her spine. My sister is a radiological tech and she said she bet he could see the tick on the xray...because she can see the fold of a tshirt when she does human xrays.
We live in Tennessee by the way, so if you're not a crooked vet, which I suspect you're not considering your love of dogs, pls immediately check the dog for ticks if they come in for sudden paralysis. I've been telling everyone I can about this because I had never heard of tick paralysis before and there are so many fleas, ticks, and heartworms in the southeast United States. Plus our dog we'd rescued from a literal crack house, and had for 12 years, would have died because we didn't know a tick could cause the death of a dog. A completely preventable death. And neither did this vet know...or maybe he did and just wanted to make about $15 grand. "But don't worry she can take out a huge Care Credit loan and spend the next 10 years paying it off." 🙄😂

Dogs trained for bite work really should always have their handler present. Dogs that do bite work aren't exactly dangerous though but some may be a bit risky. They are selected for having that high mouthy drive to bite and hold. This doesn't mean feral aggression. I'm thinking cats can be more dangerous lol! Claws, fang teeth, quick moving, and they really don't want someone poking on them.

My sons dog is a Malinois pit mix. Everyone loves her but she’s a lot of energy compared to a full bred pit luckily she doesn’t have dog aggressive or people aggressive tendencies (crap shoot with pits). My son has managed to teach her to “hunt” bark on command and basics and she learns very easily like our last dog (a Malinois that was too nice to be a k9)
She also is very aware that my son is in charge and if he’s gone it’s me. If we’re both home and I’m telling her something, she looks at my son for permission to listen to me. It’s funny but she was meant to be his protector so I don’t mind.
I 100% think the Malinois line is the perfect guard dog and if they mix just hope the mix gets the temperament of the Malinois parent.

I am an attorney as well, though I mostly handle criminal tax litigation. I agree that our police officers have it hard. I believe that a few bad apples can spoil an entire harvest, and that is what we see now. A few bad officers have successfully undermined the respect officers had been given. Now, the good officers, of which there are many more, are having to work even harder, knowing that their every move is being scrutinized, giving people breaks who probably don't deserve them, and end up making poor decisions like allowing someone to sit in the front of the cruiser with the keys all to earn that respect back. What surprised me was the ease in which this convict was able to gain access to the rifle in the vehicle. In my state, there are safety features to prevent them from being fired or removed unless it is by an officer.

I’m really trying to push hard for better mental health care for first responders as one myself, but training, opportunities and availability are virtually nonexistent. I’ve worked several mass casualty incidents, two of which made national news, and there were no counseling offerings after either. I had to call my new wife three weeks after we got married as I was getting my tourniquets prepped on the way to a 5-fatal (including a cop) telling her I was going to try to be safe, that she shouldn’t turn on the news and that she needed to keep her phone on. This is controversial in the business but I’d rather she get a last call from me knowing I was brave when in trouble than for her to have no clue I was in danger and to get a sudden phone call or knock at the door and be told I wasn’t coming home. I don’t have a cutesy name for her in my phone, it’s strictly “wife” and her name so that if she tries to get a hold of me and I’m down my coworkers know to talk to her if they can. I was in an 84 mile per hour rollover on duty, got four days off and went back to a 60-hour work week to pay the bills. The four days off came out of my vacation time. Almost everyone works multiple jobs when they max out overtime because it’s that tough to pay the bills, much less take the time off and pay for therapy and/or meds. It’s not even nearly as much about the stigma in a lot of areas, that’s specifically why I’m involved- people know I’ve seen my fair share of stuff and they feel comfortable talking to me. It’s becoming more and more of an accessibility issue, just as it’s becoming for everyone in an ever-increasingly strained system.

You're right about one part of your statement, I'll give you that - the "nobody's perfect" part... What you don't seem to consider when you compare me to this cop is the fact that I am not a trained and sworn officer of the law who's compensated with taxpayer dollars to "protect" them. How many people could have died as a result of this officer's decision- that I would be willing to bet is not something they're advised to do in training, not does it fall under any sort of reasonable common sense. Cops literally are not required to be smart, they're just in a special position to really screw lots more people than how average Joe when they're the ones making the braindead dumbass decisions.

Shouldn’t bail be denied in cases like this? I’ve seen bail hearings where the judge decides to deny bail because of flight risk and danger to the public. Even if the person who’s charged has a right to get bail, sometimes it’s denied. Or does this vary per state?

Honestly, he has the right color of skin. That’s it. White myself, sister married to a Supervisor, he’s WHITE, that was he’s reply. As he said, “ Had he been BLACK, bond would have been denied, and this second situation wouldn’t have happened. He’s White, and that’s why they don’t want to release this information, that would show that dangerous White criminals have been released on a very low bond, or without bond, then discover that people of color, committing small crimes, were denied bond “ That was my sister husband’s reply. April of 2020 was during maximum fear of the unknown with covid. Italy was out of control and cases were starting to pile up in New York. Places like prisons were feared to be hot spots for the spread which undoubtedly led to this judgement error. There were convicted prisoners that were being considered for release, let alone pre detention. This guy just got "lucky" it was at this point in time or it would have NEVER happened. By May of 2021, I'd think he already jumped bail and was permanently on the run by then

It’s incredibly common for people to not realise an active shooting is taking place. Even professional soldiers in a war zone often fail to identify being shot at, let alone Joe Schmo on his grocery trip to Walmart. It’s not due to stupidity but due to how unbelievable it is to the brain that you’re in that type of situation, humans do very badly with threat identification when we aren’t actively attacked within like, ‘bear about to rip your face off’ range. The brain just shuts down trying to process what is happening.
Edit: it’s exactly the reason why militaries religiously drill into soldiers the idea that you duck at the slightest sign of danger. You can’t rely on anything but drilled in reflex, and that dosent come naturally. Even so, professional US marines still regularly fail to do this even in active, confirmed active war zones.
