I like to imagine that it's truly not about the camera and that you live in some magical place with extremely photogenic people, animals, and flora. Full of dynamic range and lit by perfect rays of sunlight. That's how your videos make me feel.
I was just thinking that. We're seeing everything through the quality of his video camera. Colours from the CCD sensor of the Leica, dynamic range of the Nikon. And in my case watching this on my phone. Lol.
I think it’s a combination of us not living there and seeing it all the time, his skill as a photographer to frame interesting shots, his perseverance to get a good shot, and the weather. You can see a lot of good shots he took when the weather was just right, and he admits to stopping on his way home from work with his wife just to rush out and get a good shot.
I live in the same country and i keep thinking there is nothing to photograph! He's just very good and creative, to me he's the best camera guy on TH-cam.
By far my favourite TH-camr. Every video is so refreshing I learn so much about the value of old cameras. I'll never get rid of my Xpro1 because of you. So many love to focus on the new tech predominantly but you really capture the magic of old, the why behind it and the so what. Thank you!
I love the DF, and precisely the quality of the images why I love it so much. They have such depth and pop, and appear very natural, like Portra 400. But you're right, it's all about taste. My aunt was asking me what the best camera for her was yesterday, and I told her the same thing- it's all about what you like. Whatever you like the best is the best. But I like my DF the best. (I also really like images the old 16mp Fujifilm cameras and the images from the Rico GR II and III, and the Nikon D3.)
All wonderful choices. I love that my beloved Foveon was the runner up! 💜 You make some of the best photographic content on TH-cam Mattias, and I mean that. Thank you.
Brilliant review. Absolutely right: image quality is subjective. Some cameras just have that x-factor, producing pleasing photos in spite of the lab tests. In fact, the opposite is true too: I've had a number of cameras that do extremely well in the lab tests but produce flat, clinical images that underwhelm
Your nikon df video is one of my smoke break videos. Your sample photos there are just exceptional. The pentax b&w photos just inexplicably ravishing! Thank you for feeding my daydreams Mattias!
Thank you Mattias, you make me move from my good "old" Pentax K-5 to a brand new Kp, two days ago. Mounted with my vintage SMC Pentax-F 28mm f2.8, it is pure pleasure. But my wife does not thank you as you also convinced me to buy a Ricoh GRIII recently 😱
@@socialtigerTV yes, paired with the right lens, it provides enough details for good print, and the colors are nice and soft. very few features: less distractions ;)
Lol I wrote on your topic nikon df 😍 so happy that you agreed with me, Df as I wrote has the best sensor ever builted. A film digital sensor with best iso capability and the highest dynamic range in a camera. And the color, wow look like a Kodak film.
Loved this video. You made a promise (title) and delivered... without mucking things up with specs and other variables. Promised delivered!! (and the French Bulldog photos made it even better... seriously, you have one of the best looking Frenchies around). THANK YOU for all the time and effort you put into these videos. I know it's not easy.
So Mattias, you described the image quality of your favourite of the top five in two words. Now I will sum up your reviews, also in just two words: Refreshing and informative. Thank you.
Those two words are synonymous with Nikon for me, too. I have a D600 that I absolutely love because there is just so much information on the sensor. I love the colors, the resolution is terrific, the camera feels really great too. Now that I'm used to them, I'm ok with the controls on it, but in some ways I still like how Canon does things for one-handed control on the 5D II, my former main DSLR. The image quality was great with that too, definitely still a very capable camera, but you need to get the right exposure (exposing to the left) because it clips highlights very easily and shadows aren't perfect either. Great list, lovely cameras, all of them are worthy of being somebody's only camera, depending on what they like best and what works for them. I would love to try a digital Leica sometime, your M8 review always gets me with those terrific colors and most of all great pictures. Thanks for another excellent vid Mattias!
My favourite images come out of an old and battered Panasonic GF1. Huge amounts of noise in low light, but still, the grain looks aesthetic. The colours are really organic and lovely. Beats my DSLR if you don't pixel peep.
As soon as you mentioned the CCD I thought YES! There was something about the colours and feel of CCD images. I don't know what it is, but it is a thing. I miss the colour and feel of my first DSLR. Another great video!
The funny thing here is that I’ve always thought the colors from my 5D classic were better than my 70D, M50, and my RP. I bought it used with an ancient 28mm f2.8 (circa 1995) that still works perfectly for about $200 USD. I can’t put my finger on it but straight out of camera the images look more “interesting”. I also have an old point and shoot S100 that has some of the best colors as well. I really enjoy that 5D. Even the jpegs shine ✨
Beautiful photos across the board, never really considered the DF but I can certainly see why you love it. For me the original Fuji X100 was the camera I owned that produced my favourite images.
@@-grey The original X100 didn't have an X-trans sensor. It was a CMOS bayer type. I've since moved onto various more modern Fuji bodies and lenses and all are amazing, but that X100 had something special about it and when I look back on the photos I took with it I always really like the look of them.
I agree with the Df, never sold it because of its sensor, something special I love my GFX and xt systems but that Df, damn, had the shutter replaced after 250k clic and I keep it ! (Well I could exchange it for the black version I have to admit..)
I bought a used Df last year - partly after one of your review videos. It produces amazing results, and yes it has foibles in how you use it - but the images are the best I have ever seen in a camera. Nuff said.
Out of curiosity I am thinking of getting either a Nikon 20mm 2.8D lens, or the 24 mm 2.8D for my Df Cannot decide which is better. Any viewers on here have a view? or experience of the lenses?
Holy Wow. Im jumping at 1245am. Im so happy. #1 surprised me but now im even more glad I picked one up. My only thing is fighting between it and my D700 at shows. I do carry both now.
After doing wedding & sports photography for about 25 years on film (Hasselblad for wedding & Nikon F1 and F4 for sports) and then changing professions and getting back into digital photography 15 years later as a hobby by chance came across a used Nikon DF in a camera shop. The sales pitch on purchasing the DF was that I could use all my old Nikon mount lenses on the DF and of course they all work. What a camera! All the dials are in the same place as the old film F1 and pretty much the F4 film cameras. I’ve seen a lot of negative reviews on the DF and don’t understand what the issue is. I guess I am not biased by using more menu driven cameras and shot manual for the most part for so long that I don’t know the difference. The dynamic range on the DF is incredible in jpg. The DF is very intuitive to me meaning that the analog dials are all in the right place. I have learned to navigate the menus over time. The only complaint I have with the DF is that it does not have a split image rangefinder screen to assist with low light focusing while using manual lenses. I have since purchased 3 Nikon auto focus lenses that have helped me with this extensively by circumventing the use of the focusing screen. So as the author stated your camera choice is purely subjective. The DF works for me because of the smooth almost seamless transition from film to digital. No more bulk loading film such as Ilford XP-1 into 35 mm cassettes pre shoot and then processing in a dark room post shoot. Literally hours cut out of production by going digital and doing all on my desk top. I can even bracket my exposures in digital and not have the expense of using so much film to do so. The DF is a perfect fit for me and how I shoot and understand photography.
James Archer I just shot a paid Birthday Party with my D700. All lighting situations were thrown at me and as expected the D700 handled them all beautifully.
@@Zapruderfilm1963 I also own the D750 as well as the FUJI X-H1. Bought the D700 used. Love it. I shoot the night( no tripod ) with the D700 with ISO limited to 1600. Love the heft of this workhorse.Good, God. That shutter sound is fab. I never remove the CF card for fear of bending the camera's internal pins.
I once saw a review of the D700 which tried to explain the spectacular IQ of that particular camera. The bottom line was that of all sensors of that era, the D700 sensor had the largest individual surface area per pixel of all. Probably was a very important factor that made the D700 the #1 choice of portrait and wedding photographers at the time.
The Df has been an interesting polarising camera, and 1 i am interested in owing 1 day after im over my Fuji xt1 and sony A7III .. again a wonderful short film to watch over and over again thanks for the great work.
Ok Mattias. This video nailed it. I’m buying a Sigma SD Quattro based on this and tour other reviews. For a “Desert Mountains Photo Collage”. And compare them to the Pentax KP-70 (another MB suggestion). The Sigma just looks so cool!😎. Additionally going to shoot slide film via a Fuji 690. Wish me luck !!
In your hands everything is a good choice. Because of your M8 videos I bought it and it pleased me with the results straight out of camera. I let it go for the m240 since I have many other lenses which are easy to use on the m240. But I have to say the m8 is a true legend. Maybe one day Leica will produce a CCD camera again. Thank you for the great content.
Df + 58mm f/1.4 is systematic and pure magic. I also have a Z7 (and a D850 before that), and, with that lens, the Df beats them every single time in terms of IQ(to my eyes anyway). Another magical lens (for me) on the Df is the Zeiss ZF2 35mm f/2. Even in 2022, the Df remains a lovely proposition, despite (or because) of its old generation "low" resolution D4 sensor.
Curious I might add. I'm pretty new to photography all in all but I've had the discussion about dynamic range from time to time with different people and exclusively I have gotten the answer "it's not as important as you think". Sure, there are tons of other features that makes a good camera but I gotta say, those times I need to push the files close to abusing them, I wouldn't trade that DR for any other gimmick in the world. Sprinkle that with some lovely colors and decent sharpness and you can't go wrong.
It'really a difficult choice... I love the B&W from my Monochrom and XP1... I love the files from theOlympus OM 1 mark I out of the box... I can't say anything but aaah...! when viewing the files from my GFX S... ... and I do not manage to like files from my Eos mark I....
Nikon Df is called the "Low Light Master". In my optics, this is not a question of how high this camera can reach, in high ISO mode, on the contrary, how low an ISO setting can be selected, at long exposure. Nikon Df has a brilliant ability in this discipline that I have not yet found, by other cameras. To that end, I see, notwithstanding, the same sensor is used in D4 and D4s, in Df is unlocked, and works beyond the work area of the professional models. Speed (FPS) is not a parameter to count when creativity is in focus. Furthermore, I see the 16 MP as a strength as it is ample for even the most discerning. Cropping and framing are done in the exposure process, not in Photoshop. It raises the technical quality of the end product. Nikon Df seems in my hands like a digitized version of the legendary Nikon F3. Manual settings provide an instant overview without having to consult several menus to find out how the camera is configured. In my optics, the Nikon Df is the most excellent camera produced in the digital age. There are two wishes for how this wonderful camera can be made even better: Switch to a CCD sensor and expand to two memory cards. -Such a camera must definitely become the ultimate camera for creative living. Nikon Df: A camera that is given my highest possible recommendation.
Great video. Great narration and great music. The transition to the M8 was really great! Man, now I am jonesing for a Df. My father gave me his nikkor ais 50mm f1.2 and 35mm 1.4 recently. I've been adapting them to my fuji xe3, but I've been wondering about shooting them natively on my old N90s slr, but that would require me shooting film and I am not sure about going down that rabbit whole. The Df, well that would be fun, but that would also mean $$$$... :P
Was looking towards the Nikon Z6 as a walk around camera but didn’t like some of the reviews and the fact that I’d have to use the adaptor or purchase new expensive lenses. Stumbled upon a MINT Nikon DF ...6600 clicks and two old nikkor lenses for just under a thousand bucks! Added a 24-85mm, the nikkor 55 f1.2 and the 135 f2.8 ...all for about 500$. LOVE that old D4 sensor look and coupled with the classic nikkor lenses you can’t beat the image quality! The DK-17m magnifying eyepiece helps with manual focusing. I’m in LOVE with photography again!
Camera's I have owned over the years: - Nikon D5100 - Nikon D7200 - Nikon D700 - Nikon D810 - Panasonic LX100 - Panasonic GH4 - Fujifilm X-Pro - Fujifilm X-T2 - Sony A7 - Canon 5D MKII The best images came from the D700 and X-Pro and in particular the combination of the glass used for them, with the D700 it was the 105mm F2 DC and the X-Pro it's the 56mm F1.2 APD. The sensor is the most important part of the images, no amount of resolution and auto focus can or ever will change the quality of glass and the characteristics of a sensor. The X-T2 and the D810 are better camera's but for some reason lose the magic of and feel of the images shot with the D700 and the X-Pro... If I could some how get all the benefits of the modern camera's and features with those SAME sensor's. One can dream.
I love my "cheap" Rebel STI sure its not cutting edge but once in a while I take a shot then get blown away.Canon cameras in general produce some of the best skin tones. Most here on your list I can't afford.
Yes, I totally agree, older cameras have something that modern cameras do not, colors. Camera manufacturers seem to count on users changing the colors in post. That's interesting the EOS R didn't make this list. I've only used the Nikon Df once, and it reminded me of my dad's Nikon F, from 1961; I need to check that camera out again. Have you ever shot with the Canon 1Ds mark iii? I think you'd enjoy that camera. The colors were just not the same when Canon released the 1DX. Thanks for this review!
Maybe the Canon R did make it, because all these modern sensors just creates such a digitalized image. The same as the Fuji x-pro1 vs x-pro2. Yes the newer cameras are better and more modern. But the files? No... That it why I still love my 8 year old Canon 6D. Love these analog like files, that does not render sharpness like a smartphone sensor....
What about the legendary Fujifilm S5 Pro? Have you ever used it? For me, this produces the best Film Like images. I would claim it's better than the Leica M8. Would be great Matthias if you could give us your thoughts?
My only concern is first and foremost image quality out of camera I want to take pictures not sitting on a computer the xe3 is 500 bucks right now I've got lots of old Pentax glass but the KP is like I think 750 tough one. If I can find it 2 I stilll would consider it
My favorite IQ comes from a Fuji GW690 III. It has a super sharp and very charismatic 90mm (40mm equivalent) lens and it exposes a 60mmx90mm frame on 120 Film. That's almost four times as big as the sensor in a Hasselblad or a Fuji GFX 100. Beat that, digital medium format!
I didn't include film in the list at all because it doesn't have much to do with the camera. I to had a GW690iii but sold it because I kept using my 6×10 Zeiss instead :) The GFX is hardly MF, it's even smaller than my EOS-R with a Kipon b;)
All your videos are relaxing and the images are genius. I do own a KP but can’t compare the image quality to the k1 which you also reviewed. Where would you rate the k1. Ergonomics are way better and dynamic range is superb. Would love to try the DF but where I live they want 2600 usd. Cheers and keep those videos coming. Love them.
I loved my D200 images. 10mp, impossible to recover in processing, but the jpegs were simply fantastic, and required only minor tweaks (if any). Fuji cameras get lovely jpegs as well, but I still miss the d200.
It's the magic of old CCD sensors. I have a D7500 which has great IQ, but I often find myself preferring my friend's D80. who cares if I can't recover as much shadows or if ISO 400 on that camera is worse than ISO 6400 on the 7500, i love them colors
@@notme1998 it's really interesting, the raws I found quite hard to work with - but the jpegs just had amazing contrast right away, and being 10mp was an advantage in terms of using cheap lenses - no need for the sharpest glass to get a sharp photo to print up to a decent size. I also loved the D70 - it had an electronic shutter that was instant, so it could flash sync at any speed. I paired it with a tiny vintage flash on a wireless trigger and got amazing daylight flash shots at 1/4000th with very little loss of power. Now available for about 50 quid! Also had a ccd sensor, but I remember the d200 being better. Heavy as hell though.
My first DSLR was the Olympus E-500. No live view, only 8 mp and 4/3 sensor but a Kodak CCD sensor. I loved the "creamy" images so much that I've kept that camera even though I rarely use it anymore. Yes, I agree. I think CCD sensors are still magical.
Satisfying video! You really make me want to try out that Leica M8 now! Haha. I did a quick search to see how much they go for and WOW. Seems like they routinely sell for $1,200-$1,300 (USD) on eBay. Seems like a no brainer if someone has always lusted after a Leica, but can't afford the "new" ones. I've always heard great things about that sensor in the Nikon Df. Very cool list and kind of surprised the Canon 5D classic didn't make the cut given how everyone raves about it (I shot on it for a short time as well).
I deeply love the 1D MkII, there is something about the grain that camera makes really gets to me. But after getting a DOA one and the old battery type keep me from buying one again. I instead have a original 5D, a fantastic look and a great partner with my EOS R.
Of all your videos, this has the most surprises for me. On one hand, I didn’t expect to see the 6D MK II in here because of its inferior sensor; sarcasm aside, the 6D + 135mm f2 work like a dream. And on the other hand, I kind of hoped to see a Fuji in the mix. Anyways, seems that most of us underestimated the DF, I hope prices don’t go up on eBay after this 😉
Classic legendary gear each with their own merit. But it's the man behind the viewfinder with hands on the shutter release button that calls the shots. Amazing photography and thanks for sharing.
I still love the color science in my Fuji XE2.... and for some reason nothing out of my spec'd out XT3 feels the same way. I think the Fuji 16mp X-Trans II was more thought out.
@@mvonwalter6927 I bought one this year for a good price. I also have a D800. Both cameras have totally different quality to them. The dynamic range isn't nearly as good on the D700, but you can do just about anything with it. The digital "grain" is much more pleasing on the D700, in my opinion.
Taking out the digital alterations on the computer on lightroom, capture one and the likes, SOOC the image quality I loved is from Sony Rx1 with 24mp using the choice on picture profile and second Olympus Pen f with black and white modes and third Fujifilm x-h1 with acros monochrome with green filter for portrait
I picked this camera up recently after going through all the reviews and all the negative remarks. Put simply I’m blown away buy the images coming off this sensor. in my opinion. This camera makes more sense now than it ever did as the prices are very affordable in 2023. Loads of fun. Your’s was literally the only positive review of this camera as you looked passed all the confusion and went straight to the image off the sensor. I think this camera will become a classic (ironically as it was a little contrived in it’s design) as models disappear with age. One to keep in good condition, but also to use and enjoy. Made In Japan designed by Tetsuro Goto and now affordable. What more do you want!?
For me it's B&W film and Mattias approved it last time I asked :) Whatever sensor and profile and printing method, cannot beat a traditionally printed B&W image, it's simply stunning. I love my Fomapan 400 but really, whatever film can beat sensors any day IMO.
I bought a Pentax k10d a couple months ago for peanuts, coupled it with some vintage Pentax glass and boy oh boy was I surprised by the the old, low megapixel ccd sensor! Instantly fell in love with the images.
Love this channel's philosophy: gear doesn't matter. Very good insight as I gunning for my first digital camera and having come from an ancient Ricoh FF-70. (I won't mention the 1000s of shots taken with the computational photography that smartphones provide) 😁
Great choice! I didn't use the 6D but I loved my 5D MII, Pentax is often underrated, I prefer the M6 and Monochrom but the M8 is great, Sigma makes unique pictures and I love the Nikon Df's singularity and quality. Thanks!
@@bngr_bngr pure and simple nostalgia 😉 actually I'm very happy with the technical evolution and I prefer digital cameras but sometimes less is more and that's why I'm crazy about the Monochrom and also why I love the X100 and the X-pro1
Your video makes an unbeatable case for personal preferences. Is it time for a 2022 update, or have your favorites stayed the same over the last 3 years?
Haven't commented on your content in a bit. Just wanted to show some love and respect to you and your channel. I don't always agree (yes there's a ton of EF glass but the mount has only been around since the late 80s. The F mount since the 50s. Lol!!) But you are seriously the only photography channel I am aware of that would not only include a 6DMKII, and gasp Pentax in your top 5 but the venerable Nikon DF?? The dynamic range was and is indeed stunning and although you're a hundred percent right that image quality is mostly subjective the quality of the images you used to back up your picks is undeniable. Cheers and keep up the excellent content!

From aan amateur that like to take photos of my kid, some street and some landscape, i'm not a very good photgrapher and i just want the best bang for the buck. Can you please help me. Thanks
Lovely to see the Df getting the recognition it deserves! Out of the cameras I have owned and used. 1. Nikon Df /D4/D4s 2. Canon 5D classic 3. Nikon D700 4. Canon 6D mki 5. Fujifilm X Pro1/ X-E1 It's funny, despite all the new cameras which are better in almost every way, they still dont make better images. Im sure maybe the GFX cameras, or leica monochromes and some other unconventional expensive cameras which ive never used may do better. But ive tried the Z9, R5, A7iV, Fuji X-H2 etc and none of them have better colours or rendering.Even when editing. I don't think I could put a Sony A7 series or any nikon Z cameras in the top 20.
I've got a Sony RX1R, a Fuji X-Pro 2, a Panasonic Lumix LX100, and a Canon EOS 5D. My next camera will be the Nikon Df. Thank you for the insight and wise words. You have a stellar channel, one of the best on TH-cam for photograhy reviews. I love the music you choose for each video, as well. Very soothing and very appropriate for your brilliant camera work.
@@yew108 Hi Yew, no...I do not have the Nikon df yet. I did, however, buy a Nikon Z5 and a medium format Fuji GFX 50R. In my opinion all of these cameras have great color SOOC, but for portraits I would go for the Canon and for landscapes the Nikon or Fuji. Fuji does excellent blues. Canon does excellent skin tones. The Sony is good for everything-- having a more neutral color palette that can of course be tweaked in post. Of course, this is just my opinion... others may have a different take. Keep in mind that all of these cameras offer lots of color, temperature, and value adjustments in-camera, so nearly anything is possible. If you are going to strictly use your images without doing any color editing in post, then I would suggest the Fuji over the others. It does nearly everything really well.
@@sierragold Hi Sonya , wow, thank you for your long and elaborated reply, appreciate it ! When you said the Fuji, does it also includes XP2 ? Does XP2 also has similar great color rendition like GFX50r ?
@@yew108 Hi Yew, yes... I have owned several Fuji cameras over the years: X100S, X-P2, X-T3, and now the Fuji GFX 50R.... I can tell you that the "Fuji color" renders the same in all the cameras. The Fuji color science is very consistent across all their camera models. The film simulation modes are also VERY good...and are also the same in all the cameras Fuji offers. I love the black and white "Acros" in particular-- it's just beautiful. So is "Astia". I started in film photography way back in the early 1980's.... the Fuji cameras have always drawn me in because they replicate film color so much better than any other camera maker, IMO. Fuji cameras are highly tweakable in regards to color, highlights, shadows, hue, etc much more so than any other camera that I've owned, and I've owned lots lol.

This is such a varied and inclusive comparison! I've never used any of these cameras and now I really want to!
I wish Nikon would make a DF 2 as a sort of last hurrah to DSLRs.
How many people would buy it?
@@HoLeeChit11 Not enough, that's why they're not making it.
Rf with df look would be great
Nikon ZF modern mirrorless equivalent
Dear Mattias, you can make any camera’s pictures look good. Thanks for this great comparison.
Glad to hear it lived up to expectations :)
So Mattias, you described the image quality of your favourite of the top five in two words. Now I will sum up your reviews, also in just two words:
Refreshing and informative.
Thank you.
Very kind of you :)
They definitely have a richer color that gets lost on high mp cmos.
High megapixel sensors have weak color filter and they are not able to capture really deep saturated colors, that's why :(
What other CCD sensor interchangeable lens cameras are out there worth exploring?
As a Nikon Df owner, I absolutely agree! 😄
Why the X100 over the S or T? I'm genuinely curious, because I really love the X-trans II with the 27mm tone and colour rendering.
@@-grey The original X100 didn't have an X-trans sensor. It was a CMOS bayer type.
I've since moved onto various more modern Fuji bodies and lenses and all are amazing, but that X100 had something special about it and when I look back on the photos I took with it I always really like the look of them.
@@walliswizard is the X-A Bayer line an equivalent to the original X100? Because I have thought about trying one of those out for a while.
@@-grey I don't know I'm afraid, sorry.
I agree with the Df, never sold it because of its sensor, something special I love my GFX and xt systems but that Df, damn, had the shutter replaced after 250k clic and I keep it ! (Well I could exchange it for the black version I have to admit..)
You prefer the DF images over the gfx ones?
I've been hovering over buying a DF for months. Can't really justify it but this has edged me a little closer.
Peter Yates I bought used as I felt the new price was to high. After using it I realised it’s worth the retail asking price.
I have many cameras and I still think the DF is special. Definitely worth buying at current used prices
I agree with you bigtime! Dynamic range is sooo important.
Hey man, you did some amazing art, I can't stop watching them again and again. Now I start to listen them before sleeping 😴.
I bought a used Df last year - partly after one of your review videos.
It produces amazing results, and yes it has foibles in how you use it - but the images are the best I have ever seen in a camera. Nuff said.
Out of curiosity
I am thinking of getting either a Nikon 20mm 2.8D lens, or the 24 mm 2.8D for my Df
Cannot decide which is better.
Any viewers on here have a view? or experience of the lenses?
You are such a good photographer, no matter which camera! Love your pictures!
Daaaamn!!! I use to have M8 and Df; i think of them everyday. Amazin video, true about the greens on the Sigma.
Mr. Burlington thank you for a wonderful video!
If I may suggest that you might like the Nikon D700.The best night shooter without a tripod.Creamy colors. Always enjoy your discussions.
I have reviewed the d700 as well, th-cam.com/video/Cc3cAr5HkF8/w-d-xo.html
I once saw a review of the D700 which tried to explain the spectacular IQ of that particular camera. The bottom line was that of all sensors of that era, the D700 sensor had the largest individual surface area per pixel of all. Probably was a very important factor that made the D700 the #1 choice of portrait and wedding photographers at the time.
The Df has been an interesting polarising camera, and 1 i am interested in owing 1 day after im over my Fuji xt1 and sony A7III .. again a wonderful short film to watch over and over again thanks for the great work.
I love my XT1 until I use my 18mm and the performance is sub par. The D700 I enjoy quite a bit.
I really like first Canon 5d for it's large matrix, color science and very affordable price
Yes… The images from that camera were magical
In your hands everything is a good choice. Because of your M8 videos I bought it and it pleased me with the results straight out of camera. I let it go for the m240 since I have many other lenses which are easy to use on the m240. But I have to say the m8 is a true legend. Maybe one day Leica will produce a CCD camera again. Thank you for the great content.
I have a Z6 and S lenses, and the DF + a 58mm 1.4 still leaves me pining as an absurdly small setup for something with such fantastic rendering.
Matias, I love your presentation. The curiosity that you build. Wow! ... One question: do you think D750 and DF are comparable with image quality?
Curious I might add. I'm pretty new to photography all in all but I've had the discussion about dynamic range from time to time with different people and exclusively I have gotten the answer "it's not as important as you think".
Sure, there are tons of other features that makes a good camera but I gotta say, those times I need to push the files close to abusing them, I wouldn't trade that DR for any other gimmick in the world.
Sprinkle that with some lovely colors and decent sharpness and you can't go wrong.
Foveon for me, if only I can have a Foveon sensor in a GR body (ergonomics and snap function) after that love the images from Pentax and Ricoh GR.
It'really a difficult choice...
I love the B&W from my Monochrom and XP1...
I love the files from theOlympus OM 1 mark I out of the box...
I can't say anything but aaah...! when viewing the files from my GFX S...
... and I do not manage to like files from my Eos mark I....
I have a KP. Love it.
It's an awesome camera!
Fully concur Mattias! Good choice and order.
Mattias could you make a Top 5 B&W Version for image quality?
Good idea, I will.
Thanks to you Mattias, I bought a second hand Df. Only wish I had bought one earlier! The images are gorgeous.
Go Df you won’t regret!
Camera's I have owned over the years:
- Nikon D5100
- Nikon D7200
- Nikon D700
- Nikon D810
- Panasonic LX100
- Panasonic GH4
- Fujifilm X-Pro
- Fujifilm X-T2
- Sony A7
- Canon 5D MKII
The best images came from the D700 and X-Pro and in particular the combination of the glass used for them, with the D700 it was the 105mm F2 DC and the X-Pro it's the 56mm F1.2 APD.
Lovely video again!.. That powerful Dynamic Range of DF is gold!
I want a Nikon DF just to mount my 50 year old Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 to. In silver.
Interesting list , Mattias. I predicted there'd be a sigma in there somewhere. I also thought a Pentax but the K1 rather than KP.
What about the legendary Fujifilm S5 Pro? Have you ever used it? For me, this produces the best Film Like images. I would claim it's better than the Leica M8. Would be great Matthias if you could give us your thoughts?
Yay en bild tagen i Malmö! Bra video, bra kanal.
Tack :)
I to had a GW690iii but sold it because I kept using my 6×10 Zeiss instead :)
The GFX is hardly MF, it's even smaller than my EOS-R with a Kipon b;)
When said "high dynamic range" i shout Df 😀
Wish Nikon would bring back the DF for mirrorless . Lovely video !
Have you shot with Nikon D700.A real killr.Great dynamic range and creamy colors.
@@slimjim340 d700, th-cam.com/video/Cc3cAr5HkF8/w-d-xo.html
I’d like to know how many photos of your dog you’ve taken.
Thank you for another interesting video. I really enjoy your videos and your thoughts about cameras and photography!
Glad you enjoy them!
another amazing vid dude, thanks so much for your content!
Nikon imaging is wonderful, but I personally liked the Pentax kp the best based on the vid samples.
Anyways, seems that most of us underestimated the DF, I hope prices don’t go up on eBay after this 😉
@Mattias...saw that you chose the Pentax KP over the K1. Where would you place the K1? Trying to decide between the two.
Great video! Love a channel with actual photography shown!!!!!
Thanks :)
Man I enjoyed this video so much
3:06 omg that's a beautiful picture!! Still, Fujifilm X-PRO2 for me. Also those Nikon Df pics are incredible!
I've bought the Fuji XT3 but couldn't sell the Pro2. it is built better and the images are slightly different even with the same lens.
There are some amazingly beautiful shots in this video.
I’d like to also throw out into the mix the Nikon D700.... such unique quality!
Been debating getting one since I sold my D600 and am still sitting on a pile of AI glass.
Hi. I bought a df after watching your review. I love the colours, and love using the dials.
Me too. Loved that camera. Sadly mine broke about a year ago. Might get another some day.
Love this channel's philosophy: gear doesn't matter. Very good insight as I gunning for my first digital camera and having come from an ancient Ricoh FF-70. (I won't mention the 1000s of shots taken with the computational photography that smartphones provide) 😁
Favorite music out of all your videos!
Great choice! I didn't use the 6D but I loved my 5D MII, Pentax is often underrated, I prefer the M6 and Monochrom but the M8 is great, Sigma makes unique pictures and I love the Nikon Df's singularity and quality. Thanks!
Боря Дюпон in film cameras image quality is a function of lens and film type used. The camera is just a light box.
@@bngr_bngr sure but I love how it feels shooting with the M6 and the outcome too

@@bngr_bngr pure and simple nostalgia 😉 actually I'm very happy with the technical evolution and I prefer digital cameras but sometimes less is more and that's why I'm crazy about the Monochrom and also why I love the X100 and the X-pro1
Can't argue with that top 3 :)
Hello Matias. I'm in the fence between pentax kp, k1 or canon 6d mkII. I'm an amateur and now i'm without any camera. From aan amateur that like to take photos of my kid, some street and some landscape, i'm not a very good photgrapher and i just want the best bang for the buck.
Can you please help me. Thanks
They are all good enough for that. So pick the one that seems the most fun to use.
Lovely to see the Df getting the recognition it deserves! Out of the cameras I have owned and used.
1. Nikon Df /D4/D4s
2. Canon 5D classic
3. Nikon D700
4. Canon 6D mki
5. Fujifilm X Pro1/ X-E1
It's funny, despite all the new cameras which are better in almost every way, they still dont make better images.
@Sonya .Hi ! Have you got the DF ? You have a very good collection of cameras , which one produce the best colour SOOC ?
@@sierragold Hi Sonya, sent you two identical messages few days ago, but they seems like don't show up here... Regards.

Well, the 5D classic was honorably mentioned when he talked about the 6d Mk ii. Good enough for me.
Great video, I was hoping to see here the Nikon d700
i wonder what the difference is between the d700 and the Nikon DF... are they not the same sensor? should be the same.
@Thomas O'Shea not the same sensor. The DF share sensor with the D4.
