How to knit the Old Shale Stitch. This is often referred to as Feather and Fan, however that is a different stitch. Next week I will show Feather and Fan.

thank you for re-doing the old shale stitch ...keep up the great work
This is great! I have always knit using my right hand to hold yarn, and by following your video I can make something with a lovely stitch and at the same time teach myself to hold yarn with my left hand. You covered all the basics! Then I will be ready to try some fair isle knitting :-)
I love your videos, they are clear and easy to understand and those who don't know English can easily see what is going on.
I am doing this pattern in the round but knitting it as if I am knitting it flat so I am not reversing the even row like normal to see what it looks like. I can't wait... :)
your tutorials are really clear and comprehensive. I feel like I can do all of these stitches u teach except my hands are so clumsy. I guess I just have to practice a lot. :) Thank you for making these tutorials.
Send to Amy
Oh my god I’ve tried this 3x and it STILL isn’t working. I don’t have a k2tog 3x at the end of the row. It’s always y/o k1 6x
Enjoyed the video one of my favorite stitches. You're shawl is beautiful
Thank you for this stitch. It is quite lovely. I am a fairly new knitter, hooked for years though, and I really appreciate your tutorials. Very thorough and easy to follow. Thank you.
The shawl was a pattern I picked up at the shop I purchased the yarn for the shawl. That was years ago and I no longer have the pattern or recall the name of it. I'm sure you can find something similar perhaps on ravelry or knitting pattern central.
I don't recall exactly. I picked up the pattern at the shop where I purchased the yarn for the shawl. That was years ago and I no longer have the pattern or recall the name of it.
May I ask you 2 things. How do you cast off so that each end of a scarf in this stitch has the same scallop, and, how would you increase/decrease e.g. for a sleeve in this stitch? Thank You for your clear and understandable tutorials.
I love this stitch. I save it.
Really well done. (I like the Karbonz needles as well.)
So, it seems that the difference between Feather and Fan versus Old Shale is the rows of solid stitches. In the Feather and Fan it's K, P, (pattern row), K. The Old Shale is K, K, (pattern row), P. The 'pattern' part is slightly different as well but still it's equal numbers of k2tog for every YO.
Correct?
Obrigada por compartilhar esse lindo ponto. Estou fazendo um Cachecol para mim. Lindo! 😍🇧🇷👏
thank you. that was so easy to follow and understand.
I don't know what pattern you are using, but from what you provided the designer has added an extra stitch at the beginning/end of the rows for selvedge, and instead of having the purl bumps on the front of the fabric, the second row is purled instead of knit to give a smoother look. You should follow your pattern as written, and ask the designer with particular questions about that pattern. The video is just showing how this stitch is commonly worked, not a "pattern" for a particular item.
Only practice can give even tension. But don't get too caught up on how you think knitting should look. If you produce a fabric you are happy with then there's nothing wrong with it. Some people just knit more loosely than others.
VERY NICE
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO,YOU KIT LIKE I DO WHICH IS VERY HELPFUL SINCE I WAS BORN IN GERMANY
I love this stitch. When you made your shawl how many stitches was it and what size needles did you use. Thank you
I really appreciate your sites and helpfulness!! I have a problem tho I think.. I love the Old Shale pattern so am making a baby blanket free pattern.. My pattern however is different. Am I doing it wrong??? Mine said .. CO 164. , row 1: knit.. Row 2: purl... Row 3: k1, * k2 tog(3x) yo,k1(6x), k2 tog(3x) to last st, k1... Row4: knit... I do t thinking looks just like your shawl.. Do I need to start over and follow yours??
To do this shawl, I know that you cast on multiples of 18 stitches, but if it's a shawl, is it described as a wrap? How many stitches does it take to make a shawl?
You will always bind off after the last row of the pattern, unless you have a specific pattern that states otherwise
😃😃Just like to thank you that you knit the same way i do
Your video is easy to fallow i have made an Afghan or 2 with this Pattern
Oh!mg.love it,Thanks for sharing!
Hi I did this pattern on a scarf. It looks great and now its time to bind off or cast off. Which type of cast off do you recommend for this pattern?
The standard knitted bind off works just fine.
How many pattern repeats did you make for the shawl plus border? I like it :)
Dear iknitwithcatfur,
Thank you for this amazing pattern. I am using it to knit a scarf which will be my sister's Christmas present. It looks lovely!
I made a mistake and had to unravel a few rows (which I quite often do when I am knitting). However, this time I am unable to pick up my knitting because I can't recognise which row I have to knit next. I have tried with the 4 rows and nothing seems to be working. If I send you a picture, could you possibly have a look and tell me wether I have to continue with row 1, 2, 3 or 4 ? Sorry to bother you with that, I have spent all evening trying to figure it out and trying different things but I am really stuck!
Thank you in advance for your answer :)
What is the last row you work before binding off? Do you work thru row 4 and bind off after that?
Thank you so much! I just googled a baby blanket for the old shale and that's what I found. I'm new to knitting so have lots to learn! Been knitting a year and I have found your site to be the most helpful.. THANK YOU! My blanket resembles your pattern but just a little different. I love your shawl! So working in multiples of 18 for your Old Shale that means I would just keep adding 18 to my co til I have it wide enough? Example 18 x. 5 for a co of 90.. Am I thinking right?
hi I'd like to ask a Q: I have been an on and off knitter love the way knitting fabric looks but I seem to be having problem knitting tight enough even with smaller needles. I cast on using the single or even the old fashion way what can I do so my knitting looks tighter Help TY happy KNitting
Beautiful!!! I have found my next project! Thank you. What did you do for the boarder?
You can just bind off as you normally would, whatever bind off you like, for instance the standard knitted bind off. The bin off end will scallop just like the cast on. I don't knit things that require sleeves, so can't give much help with that part - ask for advice on some knitting forums like Knitting Paradise or Knitting Help. I am mostly a shawl/scarf/cowl knitter, I don't like sweater knitting or other sleeved garments :-)
Excellent design! Which brand yarn you used?
If you mean the yarn used for the shawl shown in the beginning, it has been so long since I bought it, I don't remember. The yarn used for the sample in the video was Plymouth Mushishi.
Hello, I know this was a few years ago, but what wool did you use…
If you're asking about the yarn used in the video for the demonstration, it is shown around 1 minute in at the bottom of the video; if you're asking about the yarn used for the project shown at the beginning (the pink thing), I am sorry, I don't remember. It was too long ago :-)
hi goodmng the pattern is very nice but k2tog is little hard than p2 tog for me please let me know can we do ssk slippingboth stitchesknitwise instead of k2tog does the pattern change if we do ask. please ans r suggest easy way of k2tog in honeycombbrioche stitch u suggested keeping strain on left needle like x and knitthe lower part of x please ans. thank u
+Sreevalli Manjula I don't think it would matter if you did an ssk rather than k2tog, as long as you're consistent. For me the k2tog is the fastest, easiest decrease and the one I always choose. Here is a link with many other decreases, you might find a suitable alternative to the k2tog here: www.knittinghelp.com/videos/decreases
I have another question. Do you remember what yarn and needle size was used?
The shawl just has a garter stitch border
what Im not understanding is with the yo's you are actually adding 3 extra stitches each time you do this (k2tg losing 3 stiches yo k1 6 times gaining the 3 you just lost plus 3 more)....so how do you keep the same number of stitches you started with??
+Laura Butler the pattern Is : K2 tog (3times); Yarn over knit 1 (6 times) , and AGAIN K2 tog (3 times) .... so it's even !!!
+Juliette Benoit so on your needle you should have : K2 tog (3 times), YO k1 (6 times) , K2 tog (3 times) ; K2 tog (3 times), YO k1 (6 times) , K2 tog (3 times); K2 tog (3 times), YO k1 (6 times) , K2 tog (3 times); K2 tog (3 times), YO k1 (6 times) , K2 tog (3 times) ; K2 tog (3 times), YO k1 (6 times) , K2 tog (3 times) and on and so on ........all the way on your needle for all the number of 18 stitches you have ;)
Okay, and that's perfectly fine :) I got so many patterns from craft stores that I've lost them too here and there.
Thanks so much getting back to me :) I'm new at knitting and crocheting, but I want to try this beautiful Old Shale pattern. I did find a pattern here on TH-cam to crochet it, but I'm not sure if I'll knit or crochet :) Have you been knitting a long time? I find that when I knit, if I make a mistake and have to unravel my work, it gets frustrating...but when I crochet and make a mistake, I just have that one stitch on my hook and can easily undo my mistake. When you started knitting...how were you with mistakes...you make knitting look so easy and your work is Fabulous! Thanks so much! :)
I'd love to see what you end up doing! I've been knitting for about ten years. I used to get hysterical when I made a mistake, because I didn't know how to fix it. I've learned to read my stitches, and if it is a mistake that will be very noticeable, I fix it. Usually I just fudge it - increase if I am missing a stitch, decrease if I have too many. If I am doing lace, I sometimes use a life line, but more often than not I just work back to the mistake ( I have a video for that ). Come on over to my facebook page, I always post the new stitches and other videos, sometimes patterns and discounts for my hand dyed, etc. facebook.com/sapphiresnpurlsknitting
hi madam very beautiful stitch I have one doubt. in an other video named oldshale stitch only in that video u told first row knit second row purl third row is pattern making row and fourth one is knit row. please tell which one looks more beautiful.
+Rajasekhar Phanibhatla You should choose whichever one looks best to you.
my mother and grandmother were still alive when this video was uploaded.
Спасибо за видео. Все понятно и доходчиво )))
Very nice❤❤
How many stiches would I need to make shawl
I can't give an answer because it depends on the weight of yarn used, needle size, your gauge and how big you want the finished shawl to be. You need to make a swatch using the yarn and needles you plan to use for the shawl and check the gauge, then you can calculate how many stitches you will need to cast on for the size you want.
How many stitches you but on for a baby Shaw please
That all depends on how big you want it to be, the weight of yarn you use, needle size and your gauge. You will need to make a gauge swatch with the yarn and needles you plan to use, and once you have the gauge you can calculate how many stitches to cast on.
such a beautiful pattern. thanks for sharing. i knit w cat fur too ; )
It's wonderful, congrats!
I wanted to do this pattern. I see that you wrote this as the pattern:
Old Shale Stitch
Multiple of 18
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: *K2tog three times, (yo, k1) six times, K2tog three times*
Row 4: Purl
Repeat these four rows for the pattern
My question is, on Row 3 I see the asterisk at the front and end of the sentence. I wanted to make sure that I was or wasn't suppose to repeat that line. I find when I see those little asterisks I'm suppose to repeat that row how ever many times. So I'm trying to be sure of myself since I'm a new to knitting.
I love your video's and thank you for all you do.
Yes, you will work those stitches all the way across the row to the end.
Great, Thank you. I'll send you a photo of my work when I am finished.
LesMess Bucilova
I casted on 108 stitches (which is 6 times 18 ) ....and I am ending with YO knit 1 .......instead of K2TOG (3 times) ....Am I right ?
+Juliette Benoit ....Never mind my question .......I found out by myself what I was doing wrong ..... ;)
Can you tell me what size needless and what weight yarn you used for this tut? Thanks so much!
Needle and yarn info is given around 1 minute into the video
oops sorry
Won't the number of stitches decrease with the k2tog?
Yes the k2tog is a decrease, however you are also making yarn overs which compensate for the decrease, and the stitch count will remain constant.
Then you know exactly what I mean...it's so frustrating when you make a mistake in knitting. I have a book I bought online on how to undo knitting mistakes, and also a video. I'm hoping that will help me if and when I do make a mistake :) Who taught you to knit, and what made you choose the continental method? Have you seen the English style of knitting called flicking? There are just so many ways to knit and sometimes it's hard to know what's best for you. The crochet pattern came up on TH-cam when I typed in Crochet Feather and Fan stitch. It really does look like the Old Shale pattern. I'm going to try to crochet the pattern first on a swatch, and then try knitting a swatch and see what is best for me. Thanks so much for all of your advice :)
Once you learn to read your stitches and fix mistakes, it isn't really frustrating. i am self taught; Continental is the method shown in the book I used to learn. I can knit English style, and have tried flicking and don't care much for that style. Good luck!
You should mention to use lace needles. I spent many hours following your instructions only to get a head ache....I found out my problem was wrong needle.
The needle size is determined by the weight of yarn used. You should be using whatever needle size that is appropriate for the yarn you choose to use. The yarn I used to knit in the video is a worsted weight, therefore I used a Size 8 needle, which is appropriate for that yarn weight. You can find out more about yarn weights and the recommended needle sizes here: www.craftyarncouncil.com/weight.html
***** what needle are you using? it is hard to use other needles-circular. I
Zarina S. Bibi I prefer to use circular needles for all of my knitting.

Hi There! You are an amazing knitter and crocheter! Is there a pattern to crochet the Old Shale Stitch...thanks so much! :)
I'm not sure, I am more familiar with knitting than crochet. You may want to try looking around on Ravelry or a crochet forum and see what comes up.
I'm sorry, I do not remember.
