In this video I'll be breaking down why shorts aren't for everyone and how they could actually be slowing your growth down. Just because TH-cam wants you to use shorts, doesn't mean you should. I'll explain why they hurt your channel and how and when you should use them.

Spot on and agreed 100%. Creating shorts may get you views and subscribers, but not the right views and subscribers to help the channel long term. In terms of pay long form videos are by far better as well.

That’s so interesting. I just uploaded my first short (just random about my mic arriving) and it’s vastly overtaking what I’m aiming for: a long form content community. I found what you said about the strategy of converting shorts viewers into long form viewers interesting. Would you consider making a video explaining that more?

Yeah risky unless part of a larger plan. I personally think they are better as a separate channel.

What do you recommend creating a new account or putting the shorts on private ?
It’s worked out well for me, I livestream once a week every Monday, shorts daily in between, it has really boosted my channel, long form videos perform well too I have not noticed a dip in performance since posting shorts, my shorts are just repurposed clips from livestreams.

Good advice here. I have a separate real estate channel so my goal is to generate leads, and my strategy was going to be to post shorts that point people to the long form content video. I think I might be able to answer my own question based upon your video, but do you think that's a good strategy or just avoid the shorts altogether?
If it's for leads only. Then you could just have a shorts based channel with one long video inside that sells people on what you do (something of value to them while selling. A workshop of something), this then links to your offer or lead gen in the video description. You could then link every short video to this long video, as you can no longer link to an external websites via shorts. So your shorts do the marketing and the main video does the closing. Just a thought.

I currently post both long form videos and shorts and currently I gained mostly all of my subscribers from shorts. But now my long form videos are barely reaching 100 views. What should I do to get my long form videos "viral"?
Just focus on long form. You’ll struggle with both unless there is a very clear link. People are doing it but unless the shorts get people to watch the long then YT will stop showing the long.

Is it just me or does it "feel" like TH-cam implemented shorts as a scheme to slow down paying creators? 🙃 I've been researching this for a couple of weeks now and have come to the conclusion that shorts actually have hurt me. So I guess I just stop cold turkey??
Many are finding out the same. Though shorts are starting to pay more now. Still peanuts compared to long. Shorts just aren’t a good option for advertisers so until they find ways to improve the results for them it won’t pay well.

Just delete the shorts and push on with long form content if you want that to be the main focus. Your channel will switch to that in time. YT just likes to push shorts more than long form
One question. If you make shorts of highlights of your long form vids, does it ruin your channel?
It can. Some people make it work but YT will always at the moment push the short form content more. So long form reach falls. The two audiences depending on the niche mostly don’t crossover. It’s a bit of a lottery. You could have a separate channel
I'm a newtuber and I uploaded a couple of long form videos. By the time I came across this video, I already uploaded around 3 or 4 shorts. Did I ruined my chances to grow for good and make something out of my channel?
No nothing is permanent. if you focus on long form the audience YT will be more around this.
Would you recommend deleting previously uploaded shorts even if theyre doing well? I do want my long form content tobbe my primary content
If it's still pulling your channel in the wrong direction then potentially yes. But if they aren't really getting views, then just produce more long form
I grew my main channel fast once I started posting shorts - but my long form vids were underperforming, and the 'split audience' seems the most likely issue. Metrics are telling me 90% of my base ONLY watch my shorts... eek! And if my long vids are getting shown to that part of my base then it makes sense that the CTR and watch time % is poor. (Hence I started this new channel just for my long content - and let's see how this one goes!)
BUT... Although all of this feels very logical, I'm interested to know if there is any hard evidence that the algo tests our long content with our shorts-loving base? Would it not make sense for the algo to only show long form vids to those it knows will watch them? Why would it benefit YT to show long vids to an audience who never watch anything other than shorts?
They do show them the long form vids, it's just that the audience doesn't seem to watch them. People who watch one form often just don't cross and vice versa. The main way I see shorts working are either on their own or in a system where each type of content feeds into a longer format as part of a larger brand building strategy. Purhaps with the support of emails to keep pushing the system. But I think long form may still suffer and I don't think it can work well in every niche. Lifestyle niches and ones that naturally work well on shorts and tiktok would probably work best.

Hi, as usual all very helpful! I have a video which is long form but just dogs barking which is not really what I am doing long term but it’s going nuts and has over 100k views by now. Should I keep it up to move closer to viewing hours for monetization or take it down as not really my audience? So confusing 😂

Hi, I am at 73 subs should i stop posting shorts? Or create and entirely new account? Can i just start uploading long form videos and just let the old shorts stay there?
I've uploaded videos and with thumbnails and hooks getting better my long form videos are getting clicked on
You can keep going, it's just those shorts subs and views may slow down the long form growth

Feel like this confirms some of my suspicions. I wasn’t planning to make shorts to start with, but had trouble to get basically anybody to watch my first few videos. I decided to try some shorts, and that really helped get the ball rolling. After I while, I would get some videos with a few thousand views and my shorts a few hundred maybe. Then the algorithm turned on me (don’t know why, didn’t change anything) and my long form videos really suffered. I’ve only had a few long form videos with more than 1000 views since. Some do really poorly.
However, during the same period, my shorts started doing better. Sometimes, it even looks like YT will only push one type of video at a time. Basically, it either pushes shorts or long form, never both. When one goes up, the other goes down. I have been wondering if my shorts killed my longer videos. Now, this may be a coincidence, maybe I just looked at the algorithm the wrong way (it seems rather moody at times), but I’m very tempted to stop posting shorts for a month or two and see what that does. Shorts don’t really go hand in hand with my content (relaxing art videos) anyway. At least I’d never watch shorts to wind down or just watch someone create. It’s just difficult sometimes when you have to guess how the algorithm works, and therefore, how to improve your channel.
The question would be what is the goal of your channel and are shorts the vehicle to get you there? If you think shorts don’t match the niche of your channel then why are you using them.

Hi,So I post shorts as a way to advertise my long form cooking videos and I have gotten more subscribers and views from the shorts but now my long form is suffering..I post just one shorts and long form once a week on different days.

Well, if you had to pick shorts or long form for your channel then which would you choose? Then do that. Short and long rarely cross over well as YT pushes shorts more right now.

Small channel need shorts to grow fast and reach monetisation. The best strategy is to combine both, you don’t have to choose one or the other. Create your shorts out of a long videos and put the link of a long video on every short you upload. You’ll be using your short to promote your long form videos.
I totally disagree, the value of those subscribers won’t be the same. Depends on your niche and goals. It’s definitely not “the best strategy” for everyone and needs to be carefully considered. But thanks for your thoughts I realise everyone has had different experiences.
I used shorts to get from 500 subs to 1000, I got there fast but Yt only promoted shorts. I stopped posting shorts but it still kept pushing shorts. I had to make the shorts private. I'm still yet to get the number of views on long form I used to 2 weeks after not posting shorts.

I mean it's up to you. you can make the switch to long form, but it just takes time to find the new audience. It's similar to bringing an old channel back to life or changing niche.

Annoying. Yeah as far as I can tell it just doesn’t crossover well, especially in the beginning. You need to be bigger and sure there is good content crossover. Good luck
