Good for you!! I hope you enjoy it, I'm sure you will. Please remember to have patience with yourself. With some practice you will be the proud owner of a one of a kind garment!! 💕
I am wildly impressed and slightly envious. At 49. I have maintained my lifelong refusal to learn to sew much to my mothers embarrassment when I take a piece to get a button replaced at the seamstress. Every time she explains to the seamstress that she tried to teach me to sew, and I refused to learn. 😂😂. Good for you and good luck! I enjoy watching the videos and appreciating the skill.😊
Oooooo. I'd love to see a non-competitive version of Project Runway with TH-camrs having an assignment or theme, some requirements, and a deadline. Like, two weeks to make a vintage prom dress from thrifted or second hand materials. Something where we get to watch creators go from design to finished piece(s).
What Katie Did do amazing longline vintage bras, and they have a convertible strapless one as well. It's a UK company but they ship worldwide I think. Incredible
Alas I'm looking for something that ends at the waist, since girdle-ish stuff will show through the tight stretchy dresses sadly! I may go try on their stuff when I'm in the UK though!
That is not just a dress. That's a goddess cosplay! You look amazing, and that dress is well-fitted and simply stunning.🤩 I love your style, and you are an inspiration ❤️ Can't wait to try this! 😁
Thank you so much for your detailed videos! After hearing your favorite “go to” book of Modern Pattern Design by Harriet Pepin, I found a well-loved copy with cover on the internet and grabbed it. Enjoying it so much that I ordered the other four books on the back of the cover sleeve for the flavor of the era. It cost me a pretty penny, but it was worth it. Thanks for providing the reference! Look forward to more videos!
Have a look at the Goddess brand 'Adelaide' strapless bra. It's not long line but it does have a more vintage look. I'm a huge fan of goddess bra's for a vintage look, comfort and they're pretty reasonably priced for the size I wear
I have an irrational hatred for sewing gathering stitches. They're theoretically not that complicated but I hate doing them anyway 😂 I love how this came out and you not having to do real gathering stitches only makes it better
I sew knits a lot, in general if the seams go around the body you need a stretchy stitch and seams that run up and down or don't require stretch can be sewn with a straight stitch. you can also use a longer very narrow zig-zag (but I don't like the look of that seam) I recommend you fix your serger and and use it, it makes sewing knits so much faster and easier.
Those coppery tones suit you so well - that dress is just fantastic! It's really great to see you having so much fun playing with these shapes. Knit fabrics are so forgiving in that sense, brilliant for relatively quick creative experimentation. If you want a rabbit hole of really good pattern manipulation ideas, mostly (I think) stretch fabrics, try Studio Faro. She used to post outlines of pattern pieces as Pattern Puzzles for readers to guess what kind of garment it was, then follow up with an explanation of what the pattern was for and how she arrived at that shape. I learned a lot from reading them.
Absolutely love the colour of the first dress but the "swim" material of the second. What's not to love. A dress you can go swimming in then rock up to the table and eat pudding! Don't swim immediately after eating.......Comfy yet gorgeous.
Best timing to post this, I really needed a relaxing sewing video to watch after a stressful day! Your voice is so soothing to me, I love watching your videos and have them running in the background so often ❤
I love these! They look amazing on you. And I love how you describe the sewing of the fabric. Like sewing water. That is exactly how to describe it. Sewing water!!!!!
I feel so guilty, my daughter and I watch your videos together, but I couldn't wait to see this video... Her birthday is April 1st..no fooling.... And I'm going to make this for her birthday! Hope to find a chartreuse fabric in a stretch.
I have been looking for a longline bra. You know, something that ends around my ankles! All right, my upper thighs. 😵💫 You look positively slinky in that dress!🐉The Dragon Lady from "Terry and the Pirates!" Too dang COOL for the room!
I may try to visit and try things on while I'm in the UK, but all the boning and nonsense below the waist would definitely show through a knit dress like this one grrr 🤔
Your stretching technique reminds me of an article I read many years ago in Threads magazine. [In the 1980s and 90s they had some pretty advanced technique articles.] It was used to add a bit of fullness in the bust area. At the front of the pattern, in the same area where you'd put a horizontal dart, bulge the side seam out a little - exact amount depends on your needs, the fabric, etc. Then, when you stitch the side seams together, stretch in the "dart" area. If you bulge only a little, the gathering is almost invisible. Since I wear a 30H bra, any techniques for FBAs stick in my mind.
I bought that spider fabric too! I'm thinking of making it a warmer weather hoodie, possibly short sleeve hoodie. I've been putting it off though haha because stretch fabric/stretch stitches intimidate me
I feel you on the off the shoulder bra dilemma, I used to just wear them off the shoulder but gravity is... not as kind as it used to be, let's say. I've got plans to draft a copy of the cups of a well fitting bra and graft them into a corset pattern, but I'm not exactly thrilled at the thought of how much fitting that will involve.
I love the fabric you used; oil slick shininess works wonders with figure-hugging pencil skirts/dresses! Also, thank you for acknowledging the problem of visible bra straps!
I would love to know more tips on how to sew knits and stretchy fabrics❤ I’m looking at trying to make sewn socks for myself and really have no experience in knots or stretch…it feels scary 😂
More pattern wizardry and I'm here for it!! I'll have you know that I have acquired a copy of THE BOOK and it's all your fault. I opened it and managed to read to the part where she wrote "the perfect figure" and had to close it for awhile. I'll come back to it--just need to get stomp down my emotional reaction the whole concept of a "perfect" figure. On another note, clearly you just need to get into sewing vintage lingerie so you can solve your strapless long-line bra needs. I understand that it's likely not something you'd want to model for us (you could probably do it Victorian style with a chemise under if you wished), but it would be interesting to see how you make it all work were you moved to take on the annoyance that is boning. #selfishenablingfromanotherDD
I can't say I have ever properly /read/ the book, I just turn to the pages I need like a cookbook 😅 Imagine fashion school where you're only ever taught to make things for a very small mannequin and not real people, not great! Alas I have no interest in learning to make lingerie, my patience could never handle the fiddlyness!
You amaze as always. I'm wondering if they carry so much interesting stretchy stuff in Denver because of the sports that you have in that area. You might want to look to Europe for bras. Or maybe order from Etsy a custom one. Also desserts = happiness
Ah, knits. I have one stretch stitch ( that I know of) on my machine, and I don't like how janky it makes the seam look. I assume it's because I need to adjust stitch length and width for every knit -- just one more reason why I avoid the darn things . Beautiful dress. It reminds me of Egypt.
i love how this turned out...for your size and body shape try goddess or elomi. i have a longline no round padding. im 36ff and even if i liked the rounded foam they dont fit well or suit me so through them i was able to find more traditional basques and a longline. sizing range is broad. give them a try, they design for a fuller bust no matter of body/band size. ill see if i can tag u in ig.. there are wonderful companies out there just not so avail in north america...im lucky to work in industry so can throw some things at you to look at
Have you tried sewing your own off the shoulder or strap removable vintage style bra? Course you don't have to make a video for it but that might help you have a bra that's just for you and works for what you may need and still counts for work related expenses cause you'll need the bra to better support your figure for the clothes you show case.
I’m not a fan of the modern bubble bra dual foam mounds look too. If you’re still looking for a vintage style long line bra, HerRoom has a few including one by Goddess that looks almost exactly like the Rago but the straps are removable. Secrets in Lace also has one as well as Pin Up Girl clothing although these two are less bullet bra shaped.
You always have such a vision of what you want your garments to look like! How long did that take to develop? Did you make a lot of clothing that ended up not quite your style when you started out?
Thank you Jane! I suppose I've just been absorbing fashion since I was a teen and know what I like. I tend to be a very decisive person! I can't hardly remember making things at the start, since it feels like I've been sewing since I was a kid, I started making my own clothes very early on 😅
Rather than. Sewing stretch fabrics have you thought of using guttermans maraflex sewing thread? It's a n elastic thread but instead of sewing a zigzag or stretch stitch you can use a normal streaght stitch.

Have you ever thought of making your own bras? I want to experiment with it, but I'm not mentally prepared to take the plunge (pun intended). But it would be nice to make bras that meet your unique needs.
I was wondering about your bra situation, especially knowing that you like the vintage style bras. I wonder if wearing it with a corset would help or if maybe you could build a corset into the dress. I'm trying to think of how that would be done given that the fabric is so slinky. I don't know. It's something to ponder for sure. It's also late at night and I really should be in bed. I do way to many late nights.
The trouble is structured things showing through the knit for sure. With the draping at the top it's not as noticeable, but boning from the waist down would definitely be visible and ruin the desired smooth effect 😅
@TheClosetHistorian yeah, hiding boning is a definite problem. The only thing I can think of that might eliminate or at least reduce the bones from showing through the knit would be some felt or other padding. I hesitate to suggest a strapless bra because I find them extremely uncomfortable. I wore one when I was in the wedding party of my best friend and I couldn't wait to get out of it. In fact, at the reception, I grabbed my date and took him into the bathroom with me so he could unhook it for me. (My dress didn't allow me to reach around to do it myself.) I'm a C-cup, and the weight of my girls was more than that bra could adequately handle. In my opinion, the only people who can handle a strapless bra are those who are a B-cup or smaller.
I'm interested to know why you chose to do the underarm/side seam gathering on the same side as the off shoulder. Is that purely just because it felt or looked right to you? Or is there a specific design principle at work there?
Bianca, very interested in knowing everything about sewing. I do sew but at 65 I am definitely limited. Your patreon, does it offer the ins and outs of pattern making ? Can you teach us how to read a pattern ? Please respond. So anxious
I mostly do the same sort of project based videos over on Patreon, but all of my pattern making basics are here on the channel th-cam.com/video/weIdvU0g4tk/w-d-xo.html This is a starter pattern drafting playlist I made of all my entry videos!
Now you just need a cocktail party to accessorise the dress with. I never imagined that you could do such marvellous things with knits.
I am 53 and just learning to sew. You are such an inspiration!

Yes!
Thank you Kathryn! Always a good time to pick up sewing I say ✨🧵
Same! Just turned 53 last month - and I play Bianca's playlists while I sew for motivation

The subtlety of this off the shoulder design is really lovely.

That dress is stunning! Love the patina copper finish so much.

You look amazing, and that dress is well-fitted and simply stunning.🤩
I love your style, and you are an inspiration ❤️
Can't wait to try this! 😁
Thank you Eli!
The dress is great, and I love how the tattoo peeks out at the off shoulder side. Lovely!
Thank you Fran!
Loving the all-in-one design of the bodice, and the beautiful liquid-like fabrics are stunning on you!

Thank you Sandie!
I'm really excited to see you branch out into knit pattern drafting!
Oh my lord, you look INCREDIBLE! Great dress and video.
Thank you Kelly!

What a perfect use for these fabrics!! 😍
Ooh, shiny! 😊
Your eye for cool fabrics and vintage styling is always spot on 👌
Thank you! I am a fabric fiend 😅✨
The fabric on the last piece is so right up my alley! Thanks as always for the great tutorial 😊
Thank you Jess!
Oh it's SO cool!! Great job and they look fabulous on you!
Thank you Kat!
That dress is to die for!!!!!! My gosh, B! 😍
Thank you Jo!
Okay! This is some useful additional insight into how one of my favorite thrifted t-shirts is patterned and constructed.

Good tip to use straight stich where you can when sewing knits.

Thank you Gwen! Hope you've had a few more relaxing days since 💜
This made for a very happy Tuesday! Thank you, Bianca.
That bronze fabric 😍😍😍 j'adore, despite my deep seated hatred for plastic fabrics.... exceptions make the rule!
Shiny stuff 😂🤩 Gotta have it!
Beautiful just beautiful
Thank you Heidi!
I love these! They look amazing on you. And I love how you describe the sewing of the fabric. Like sewing water. That is exactly how to describe it. Sewing water!!!!!

My goodness, this is inspiring me. Thank you thank you thank you

She's a lucky gal! Chartreuse is the best ✨
Spring is Battle of the Pollen. Conserve energy.
Ha! Never going outside helps ✨
That dress is beyond stunning 🤩
Thank you!
Ooooo this colour is divine. I do love the off the shoulder look ❤
Thank you!

Oh I really like this one. Wonder how it would look in a long sleeve and slightly loser style. I think I’ll add it to the list and find out eventually
What Katie Did does vintage Merry Widows. The glamour nouveau is strapless and comes in DD, though some are sold out at the moment.
I may try to visit and try things on while I'm in the UK, but all the boning and nonsense below the waist would definitely show through a knit dress like this one grrr 🤔
This is the second video of yours I watch and I already know it s going to be my favourite sewing channel! I m so happy I found you.
Thank you! ❤️
I love that oil slick bronze fabric!
So pretty pretty pretty!!
Thank you Cindy!
The shirts were adorable…and the dress is glorious! And I love that it looks so luxurious and expensive…but is still comfortable!
Thank you Corey!
You look amazing, thank you for this inspiration.

Thank you Thea! 💜
I absolutely love the dress and this design. I have to make one for myself! Thanks so much for sharing! You are so unbelievably talented. :)

Thank you Cristina!
Very beautiful and such a great colour on you.
Thank you!
I have exactly the same issues trying to buy bras. At this point I'm trying to sew my own. AFI Atelier has some good patterns.
Oof I am too intimated by the little fiddly pieces 😬😂
This dress is fire! 🔥 Wowsa! Love it!
Thank you!

I suppose that is one idea, just straight up wear a corset instead 🤣
I love the fabric you used; oil slick shininess works wonders with figure-hugging pencil skirts/dresses!

beautiful!, love the fabric of the dress! looks so stunning!
Thank you!
Amei ótima profissional na área da😉 costura / modista ficou lindo perfeito
You can use a three step straight stitch for doing hem turn overs
Another perfect villainess dress. :}
Ah, knits. I have one stretch stitch ( that I know of) on my machine, and I don't like how janky it makes the seam look. I assume it's because I need to adjust stitch length and width for every knit -- just one more reason why I avoid the darn things . Beautiful dress. It reminds me of Egypt.

Holy hell. Just stunning! 😍
Thank you!
Such a stunning dress!
Thank you Jane!
Have you tried sewing your own off the shoulder or strap removable vintage style bra? Course you don't have to make a video for it but that might help you have a bra that's just for you and works for what you may need and still counts for work related expenses cause you'll need the bra to better support your figure for the clothes you show case.
I have never made a bra and find the idea of sewing lingerie terrifying, so definitely not! It just seems way beyond my patience level I'm afraid 😂
Your videos are so inspiring! Thank you!
Thank you Amelia!
I'm late to the game, but PinUp Girl Clothing has vintage style longline bras in dd. I have one, and it fits amazing! Maybe give them a try?
You always have such a vision of what you want your garments to look like! How long did that take to develop? Did you make a lot of clothing that ended up not quite your style when you started out?
Thank you Jane! I suppose I've just been absorbing fashion since I was a teen and know what I like. I tend to be a very decisive person! I can't hardly remember making things at the start, since it feels like I've been sewing since I was a kid, I started making my own clothes very early on 😅
Wow that dress us awesome❤
Thank you Carol!
Thanks for sharing 😊
This is so dope!
Gorgeous!
Thank you Lauren!
Beautiful ❤
Rather than. Sewing stretch fabrics have you thought of using guttermans maraflex sewing thread? It's a n elastic thread but instead of sewing a zigzag or stretch stitch you can use a normal streaght stitch.
I'm afraid I wouldn't trust stretch thread to not deteriorate over time, elastic tends to do so, so I'd rather just stick with threads I can trust is all!
This is fantastic! I missed which type of stitch you used for the hem. Is it the faux overlock stitch?
Thank you! Yes the weird stretchy stitch indeed 😅
Could you make a Regency dress please. You are great teacher 😀 and I always wanted to know how the Regency dress is made.
Thank you! Sadly I simply hate empire waisted things on myself, so I have no intention of ever making anything Regency I'm sorry!
@@TheClosetHistorian that's ok. I really enjoy the other things your make. keep up your beautiful work
So cool! Bras, drives me crazy! I recently listened to a podcast about custom bra makers, they all seemed to be in the States, so maybe that is an option? I will find the link and post it for you.
Thank you! That indeed sounds fancy ✨
Wow!
I wonder how many views adding "Miley flowers style dress" would get you 👀 the hood, the asymetric, its there lol. Don't get mad - I love you hehe
Alas I have no idea what this means, but SEO is indeed not my strong suit!
Have you ever thought of making your own bras? I want to experiment with it, but I'm not mentally prepared to take the plunge (pun intended). But it would be nice to make bras that meet your unique needs.
Have a look at The Fairy Bra Mother's (Beverly Johnson) classes. She has some where she teaches you to make basic bras and you can leap from there.
I find the idea of sewing lingerie terrifying, so definitely not! It just seems way beyond my patience level I'm afraid 😂
this dress is gorgeous! you've mentioned you've finished a couple books. can we read your books anywhere?
Thank you! Alas non of my fiction work is published...yet I hope!
If you didn't own a serger would you Ever opt for French seams when sewing knits?
I was wondering about your bra situation, especially knowing that you like the vintage style bras. I wonder if wearing it with a corset would help or if maybe you could build a corset into the dress. Love to see you create a long line bra/corselette like you find in couture dresses. Too much?
I am not that patient 😅😂
I'm interested to know why you chose to do the underarm/side seam gathering on the same side as the off shoulder. Is that purely just because it felt or looked right to you? Or is there a specific design principle at work there?
Just becuase that was what the diagram I saw on pinterest did is all!
You should try your hand at sewing lingerie! Make the perfect one shouldered bra for your style
I love your figure :-) Well you are overall gorgeous!
