In 1880, Max Bruch composed Kol Nidrei while serving as Principal Conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Kol Nidrei was inspired by two traditional Hebrew melodies, one from a Yom Kippur service and the other from a musical setting of Byron's poem "Those that Wept on Babel's stream". Robert Hausmann requested the piece from Bruch and premiered it, and it was then published in 1881.
