If asked what type of cover/structure I thought smallmouth preferred I would say the majority prefer rock. But I think the biggest prefer that spot on a spot on a spot on a spot type spot. Such as wood on a small rocky protrusion on the end of a bluff at the choke point at the mouth of a creek with a bit of current or wind. the biggest fish are different
There’s an ox-bow off of the Apalachacola River in FL that I fish that has LM’s and Spots. When the Spots are biting, you can’t catch a LM. When the LM’s are biting, it’s rare to catch a Spot. It’s a curious relationship. I think that the Spots come in and go out. I also believe that they are so aggressive that when they are on a bite, the LM’s can’t beat them to a lure, so you don’t catch the LM’s as much. Spots tend to fight harder per inch/pound too.
I’ve lived in Florida my whole life and when I was young, I heard we sent tens of thousands of largies to Texas to help their fisheries. They’re huuuuge.
Would love a more detailed video on Spots... I fish Lake Allatoona in northern GA and mainly is a spotted bass lake. Like you said, lot of spots are caught way out in the middle of the lake seemingly around nothing (except baitballs).
Tyler did you ever consider making a sunshirt with a chest pocket on it ? I carry a small notebook and pen with me all the time to make fishing notations. Also, ty for your instructional videos and the time and effort you put into your productions for your fellow anglers. Lee
I have noticed when I catching bass on my local lake, when I catch a bass on fast moving lures it a spotted bass, when I slow down or go feness it is a largemouth, just started to see the pattern in the last 6 months, no smallmouth in this lake. But I have caught both in grass and brush.

Would this be an interesting topic to discuss at a later time?
topic: solitary bass vs schooling bass

Awesome video, this is something nobody else has covered when it comes to bass fishing. There’s a very clear difference when targeting each species!
Great video and informative. Always enjoy your content.
Great breakdown on different bass. I figured they were pretty much same creatures of habit. Really informative of the grass, rock, wood scenario.
This channel has continuously improved its content over time. It has become one of my “go-to” channels for tournament bass fishing information. 🤙
I have a great deal of experience with spots. They are all crackheads. 😂😂😂
Lol thats a perfect way to put it

Thankfully my lake is blessed to have Florida strain lm and smallmouth.
I live in Michigan and love catching a river smallie. Large mouth are fun too. But lole you said, the fight is way different.
I mainly fish Black Lake in Louisiana. We have both spots and largemouths.
