I’ve been waiting on this one!! You don’t recognize who the two “characters” were.. Prince Charles and Lady Diana from the British Royal Family! “You said you’d stand by me in the middle of Chapter 3; But you were up to your old tricks in Chapters 4,5 and 6!” like Amber pointed out, the lyrics are clever and quirky. My favourite Elvis Costello track!
This was just after three two got married; so very one was so in love with these two. This video came out at just the right time. Now it's just a nice memory of days gone by
Aw, hell yeah! Some of the stuff on "Get Happy", too. "Five gears in reverse..they say I don't know what I'm doin'. Another fashionable first..I'm walkin' down the road to ruin.."
"Accidents Will Happen," "Radio Radio," "The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes" and "Watching The Detectives" (Live at Hollywood High version) would be my next Elvis suggestions.
Elvis is King! He's a genius songwriter and has so many great songs across genres. More songs: Watching the Detectives, Radio Radio, Party Girl, Riot Act, Watch Your Step, From A Whisper to a Scream, Man Out of Time, Shipbuilding
Have they done Oliver's Army yet? Great song, some controversial lyrics that'll give anyone who doesn't know the context a shock. Also,I'd recommend Watching the Detectives,I Don't Want to Go to Chelsea,Radio Radio,Accidents Will Happen and Shipbuilding among others.
old heavy metal head banger here. Even back in the day.....Elivs Costello is a genius. Super cool music. good music is good music....no matter the genre.
The song that got them banded from SN for 12 years... excellent choice. December 17, 1977, I had just turned 11 but was visiting my grandparents for an early Christmas that year and was able to stay up and watch SNL with my cousins and uncles. I honestly didn't understand what had just happened, but my uncle, who was only about 21 at the time, explained it to me and for some reason this public act of rebellion made a lasting impression.
The backup singer wearing the yellow & reddish top is Caron Wheeler, she became the lead singer for Soul II Soul, who had hits with "Back To Life" & "Keep On Movin'". You need to check them out, the couple in the beginning are supposed to be Prince Charles & Princess Diana [Whom were a big deal back when this was released]
First heard Elvis on an 'old-school' AOR radio station in 1977. "Watching The Detectives". I claim to this day that New Wave is punk with witty lyrics, instead of brutal ones. Probably with better musicians, too. I fell in love with his 'angry' stuff, but realized through his milder work that he had a gift for doing tunes like this as well. Rumor we had when this song first came out was that the actors in the video were chosen because they resembled Prince (now King) Charles and Lady Diana.
This is my favorite period for Elvis Costello. It's the Quintessential Elvis Costello. When you listen, pay particular attention to the bass. Bruce Thomas was just fantastic. Other tunes to check out, "Veronica", "Allison", "Green Shirt" and my personal favorite, "Two Little Hitlers"
This was the first Elvis Costello song i was aware of who he was as an artist and loved this song. I of course know his previous work now but at the time this was the song that I became a fan of his.
Watching you loving Elvis Costello is making me smile so hard!! I have loved this guy 40 years, he just kept getting better and better. As he matured, his music and lyrics became more complex and thoughtful .
I count myself very lucky I grew up with lyricists the likes of Elvis Costello, Paul Weller and Billy Bragg. This song is wonderful. Keep on with his work you won't be disappointed. Love your vids.
I was definitely waiting for this reaction, from you about this awesome classic from Elvis Costelo. Maybe you can react on Watching the detectives from Elvis Costelo.
AS MENTIONED ELSEWHERE, YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT CANADIAN SINGER/PIANIST DIANA KRALL-ELVIS' WIFE. SHE'S HAD MANY POP/JAZZ COVER HITS OVER THE PAST 30 YRS SUCH AS FRIM FRAM SAUCE, LOOK OF LOVE, LET'S FALL IN LOVE, PEEL ME A GRAPE, AND WITH TONY BENNETT THE BEST IS YET TO COME, NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT AND FASCINATING RHYTHM. CLASSIC!
There's probably 30 more songs of his I'd easily recommend but a handful of major ones you haven't done yet that really showcase him is Watching the Detectives, God Give Me Strength, Veronica, The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes, Beyond Belief and I Want You.
Oh, how on Earth did I neglect to mention "The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes"! My brain is broken. I'd love to discover the Rob Squad's reaction when they discover 'that lyric' in it ain't just a t-shirt or bumper sticker. ;)
I love Elvis Costello. I have seen him live twice. This is a great song. Check out ...And In Every Home. And yes the couple in the video are Prince Charles (now King) and Lady Diana.
Great reaction Jay & Amber! 😎 Here's a few more bangers 🔥 from Elvis Costello: "This Town" (with Paul McCartney on bass), "Watching The Detectives", "Veronica" (co-written by and featuring Paul McCartney on bass),"The Only Flame In Town" (featuring Daryl Hall), "Accidents Will Happen", "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes", and "Chewing Gum"
I have this one on my car playlist-along with Accidents will happen, Olivers Army, good year for the roses and watching the detectives. Perhaps you can check these out sometime. X😊
❤ one of his best😊 Next time you are looking for Jazz artists PLEASE CHECKOUT DIANA KRALL. She is an amazing jazz pianist with a great voice. She has some duets with Tony Bennett that are fabulous. Elvis and Diana are married so can you imagine the great music around that house 😮
IN THE EIGHTIES I WATCHED HIM STAND IN FRONT OF OVER A 100,000 FANS INTHE MIDDLE OF A FIELD NEAR TORONTO...A RACE TRACK CALLED MOSPORT. HE SANG "ALISON" ACAPELA YOU COULD HAVE HEARD A PIN DROP......TO THIS DAY IT S BEEN ONE OF THE BEST PERFORMANCES I HAVE EVER SEEN . HE HAD THE AUDIENCE AT THE "HEAT WAVE UNDER HIS SPELL.
Not only are the lyrics clever but the video is also accurate in its portrayal of Charles and Diana! This video was waaaay back in 1982, a year after they had married. By the way, I am certain that was Caron Wheeler from soul 2 soul as part of the backing vocals.
The couple is Prince Charles (now King) and Princess Diana. Very clever video but very sad and tragic when looking at how things ended up for them, especially for her.
Great song. Great Reaction. I see it has already been mentioned several times that the couple in the video were actors pretending to be, (at the that time), Lady Diana and Prince Charles. So fun to watch.
Just remember when listening to anything 80's out of England, ska and reggae were influencing *everybody* at the time. Elvis Costello is the real King of Rock and Roll. ✨
The opening of this song: he had me at “ooh hoo!” Great song. BTW, that desperate dude was then-Prince Charles trying to get Princess Diana’s attention. This was before people knew about their marriage troubles. Elvis was prescient on royal satire.
Another great Elvis Costello song and video. The videos are always fun to watch. Keep them coming. Hope you get to Cheap Reward and Oliver's army soon.
Elvis Costello is a brilliant songwriter. All kinds of tempos, very heterogenous. Cool factor way up there. Punky looking/attitudinal guy but with SERIOUS musical chops. This song, I could never put my finger on why actually, was one of my top faves of his. Accidents Will Happen and Watching The Detectives are classic Elvis C, very indicative of his personna when he burst onto the scene, so I recommend them next :) Veronica and Allison are 2 of his best as well.
When Elvis Costello first started in the late 70's, I didn't care for his music but it kind of grew on me. My favorites on which you haven't react to yet are "Watching The Detectives" & "Accidents Will Happen". 😎
Seen him several times. One of the GREAT songwriters of my generation. Just a clever, clever lyricist. His wife is quite the vocalist herself. Her name is Diana Krall and does some great renditions of old, standards.
You check out “New Lace Sleeves” from 1981. It’s a b&w video, an album track, not a single then. It shows each of the Attractions vital to the groove of the song. Elvis was on critique of British society. 😎🎸
So back around '96, Elvis Costello did a great song with Burt Bacharach called "God Give Me Strength". And it was from a great movie called Grace of My Heart. Just sayin'. In case you wanna add all that to your To Listen To / To Watch lists. 😀
I’ve been waiting on this one!!
You don’t recognize who the two “characters” were.. Prince Charles and Lady Diana from the British Royal Family!
“You said you’d stand by me in the middle of Chapter 3;
But you were up to your old tricks in Chapters 4,5 and 6!”
like Amber pointed out, the lyrics are clever and quirky.
My favourite Elvis Costello track!
And Charles is now the King of course
This was just after three two got married; so very one was so in love with these two. This video came out at just the right time. Now it's just a nice memory of days gone by
@@TheRatsCastThis song was a UK hit in the mid-summer of 1983 - two years after Charlie and Di's wedding! It is meant to be them in the video, though.
Freudian slip there! Diana confirmed there were three in the marriage.
Believe me you're not the only one LOL
I think this and “Veronica” are my favorite Elvis C tunes.
Same here!
Veronica is definitely my favorite. Not sure I’d get the story without the video though.
And Alison
I highly recommend Veronica!
There’s a demo version of Veronica with just Elvis on guitar and Paul McCartney on piano. It’s better than the studio version.
“Even in a perfect world where everyone is equal; I’d still own the film rights and be working on the sequel.”
Awesome lyric🎵❤️🎵
Masterful!
Love that line.❤
All men are created equal, but differ greatly in the sequel."
- Nathaniel Ames
When this video hit, we had no idea how accurate the portrayal of (then) Prince Charles & Princess Diana was.
"But you were up to your old tricks in Chapters 4, 5 and 6...."
It's like Elvis had a crystal ball!
Elvis Costello was always the musical genius Nerd and I LOVE HIM STILL
❣️❣️❣️❣️
PUMP IT UP 🔥
Aw, hell yeah! Some of the stuff on "Get Happy", too. "Five gears in reverse..they say I don't know what I'm doin'. Another fashionable first..I'm walkin' down the road to ruin.."
If you are a fan of jazz, his wife, Canadian Diana Krall is an extraordinary award-winning jazz musician.
❤😊
And she's Elvis Costello's wife. You could listen to her interpretation of E. C's song "Almost Blue."
Diana Krall is his wife??? Wow!
I got Eva Cassidy's CD's and Diana Krall's CD's at the same time.
So good...
Watch Crazy with Diana Krall, Willie Nelson and Elvis
"Accidents Will Happen," "Radio Radio," "The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes" and "Watching The Detectives" (Live at Hollywood High version) would be my next Elvis suggestions.
"Less Than Zero", "Sneaky Feelings", "Waitng for the End of the World " ❤😊
The 'Live at the El Mocambo' versions of some of those songs is fantastic!
New Amsterdam, Yes
Jay & Amber, you'll love his "Watching The Detectives" and "I Don't Want To Go To Chelsea" !!
Absolutely ❣
Definitely those two and I would add "Red Shoes"
Mystery Dance, I'm not Angry, Radio Radio, Less than Zero
Elvis is King!
He's a genius songwriter and has so many great songs across genres. More songs: Watching the Detectives, Radio Radio, Party Girl, Riot Act, Watch Your Step, From A Whisper to a Scream, Man Out of Time, Shipbuilding

Shipbuilding. A must.
Brilliant list! I need to go listen to some of those right now!
old heavy metal head banger here. Even back in the day.....Elivs Costello is a genius. Super cool music.
good music is good music....no matter the genre.
The bass playing by Bruce Thomas really gives these songs a lot of bounce.
I think you would enjoy Radio, Radio by Elvis Costello!
The song that got them banded from SN for 12 years... excellent choice. One of favorites from the 80s…reminds me of Coffee in BED, by SQUEEZE, another 80s song👍❣️
Love SQUEEZE ❤
This, pump it up, watching the detectives and Veronica are my favorite Elvis Costello songs
The backup singer wearing the yellow & reddish top is Caron Wheeler, she became the lead singer for Soul II Soul, who had hits with "Back To Life" & "Keep On Movin'". You need to check

There are a lot of good possibilities for your next Costello song, but I think I'd go with "Watching the Detectives".
Great suggestion 👍
I'd love reactions to the entire "My Aim is True" album. "Miracle Man", "No Dancing", "Blame It on Cain", etc ... 😊
@@juliewhite7469Yes. Just do every song from that record. Y'all won't be disappointed.
@@John_Locke_108 😊❤
Miracle Man is probably my favourite EC song.@@juliewhite7469
"Watching The Detectives" from the same album is a favorite!
(She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake)
Not from the same album, and not even close!
Oliver's Army 1979 is another great song by Elvis Costello and the Attractions..
Another one to try is Good Year For The Roses.
Man, Elvis Costello was spitting fire during this time in his career. Love the guy.
Oh, thank you so much guys!! I can't get enough Elvis Costello 🥰❤!
Man Out of Time is another great song by E.C.
"BEYOND BELIEF" lives up to the title. I think it's Costello's BEST song... an unstoppable force.
The whole album is underrated.
Lyrically the best song I know.
You guys have gone way too long without hitting Watching the Detectives - my favorite Elvis Costello song.
First heard Elvis on an 'old-school' AOR radio station in 1977. "Watching The Detectives". I claim to this day that New Wave is punk with witty lyrics, instead of brutal ones. New Wave is punk for nerds
@@shaynewest8757 , not a bad way to put it!
I love Elvis Costello, and this is an awesome song. One of his best for sure. 🕊❤️🎼
"My Brave Face", "So Like Candy", and "You Want Her Too" were some of the best songs that came from that partnership.
Watching the Detectives! Phenomenal!
Anyone know this song?
Oliver's Army and a Good Year for the Roses are excellent too.
Yep me too!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love it!!!!!!
This is my favorite period for Elvis Costello. It's the Quintessential Elvis Costello. When you listen, pay particular attention to the bass. Bruce Thomas was just fantastic.

This is a real treat! EC is an amazing artist! My favorite song of theirs
Elvis's voice is so unique. Love his music. And he has a great album with Burt Bacharach.
Watching you loving Elvis Costello is making me smile so hard!! I have loved this guy 40 years, he just kept getting better and better. As he matured, his music and lyrics became more complex and thoughtful .
You need to react to Elvis Costello’s “Red Shoes” and “Veronica”.
The Angels want to wear my red shoes, Elvis Costello.....great song
I count myself very lucky I grew up with lyricists the likes of Elvis Costello, Paul Weller and Billy Bragg. This song is wonderful. Keep on with his work you won't be disappointed. Love your vids.
I was definitely waiting for this reaction, from you about this awesome classic from Elvis Costelo. Maybe you can react on Watching the detectives from Elvis Costelo.
"Veronica" is by far his best! When you listen to Veronica please pay close attention to what is about.
AND...you need to watch the video as you hear it, I think! Great storytelling (and I think the video captures it perfectly.)
By far???? It's good but not even in my list of his top 10.
Oliver's Army!! Why is it being ignored?
LOVE this song! The lyrics are so clever and cutting. Veronica next please!
Two of my favourite songs by Elvis Costello is A Good Year for the Roses and Oliver's Army.

There’s something about the harmony of the backup singers that flips every switch in my brain.

The couple is Prince Charles (now King) and Princess Diana. Very clever video but very sad and tragic when looking at how things ended up for them, especially for her.
