    Dear Mr. Hearn,
    I hope this message finds you well.
    Thanks for your consistent support and response.
    Usually I write independent TOEFL essays in the traditional way. Is it a good way and does ETS like it?
    For the integrated writing section, first I explain the points from the lecture and then the points from the reading passage. While some people first include points from the reading and then from the lecture?
    What do you think? Which one is the best way?
    Thanks for your support,
    Rameen,

      My friend, thank you for your comments and question. Keep in mind that most tutors teach either what they "think" you should do or what they were taught to teach without understanding the test, but I have spent every day of the past 15 years studying the TOEFL and teaching exactly what ETS requires of you to pass the TOEFL. Regarding the Integrated task in the Writing section, many tutors teach different methods that they think are the "right way," and students can get confused with which is the "correct" way to respond. HOWEVER, ETS has a very specific structure of responding that the graders are looking for when scoring your essays. The way I explain in the videos in my online TOEFL Video course is EXACTLY the structure that ETS requires of you for a high score. Stop wasting time and learn ETS's methods of passing your TOEFL so you can move on with living your successful life. You can see the Integrated Writing section video and videos for answering every question on the TOEFL iBT by clicking this link www.pgila.org and subscribing to my course. I look forward to seeing you there.

    I have two questions in task 2.
    1. In the introduction, do I have to paraphrase the question before stating my thesis?
    2. In introduction, do I have to introduce the three reasons to support my thesis in different sentences or can I present the three reasons in one sentence linked with conjunctions?

    • @WilliamHearnTOEFL_Tutor
      @WilliamHearnTOEFL_Tutor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Francis. Both good questions. For question 1, you must address and answer the question without repeating it verbatim. There are several ways to do that. Paraphrasing is one of them. For Question 2, you must have an introduction paragraph, a separate paragraph for each reason, and a conclusion paragraph that restates your reasons and your thesis. For more detailed videos on how ETS requires you to respond, please join my online TOEFL video course at www.pgila.org You will find separate videos for each of the questions on the test (all different from the ones you find on TH-cam), and you can also join our TOEFL Community where you can ask me any TOEFL questions. However, in my question 2, I think I did not present the question in the right way.
      According to your video, you stated that in step 2 of introduction, I can introduce the three reasons to support the thesis without giving elaborate details and examples.
      So, my question is...As part of the introduction, do I have to state each of the reasons in a separate sentence?

      @WilliamHearnTOEFL_Tutor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@francisasogwa3859 Hi Francis. Thank you for clarifying your question. For your introduction, you do NOT have to state all of your reasons. You can simply answer the question and then state that you will discuss the reasons in your essay. The main thing is to follow the RUBRIC and be sure you clearly state your position in the introduction paragraph.

    Hello William! I gave my TOEFL exam today. I managed to score 45 in the reading and listening section! My result is yet to come but I will update when it's out. Last time, I scored 29 in the speaking section and 21 in the writing section. I hope I would get better this time particularly in the writing section. For my writing and reading, I used your strategies and they worked out pretty well for me. Most importantly, I was rather calm during the exam, just fumbled a little in the speaking section, however fingers crossed! I hope it would be my last time writing this exam, it has mentally exhausted me.

Also, be sure that you are answering the question completely with reasons, examples, and details. You should also be conscious of the RUBRIC while answering. Thank you for your question because it will help many others. To answer your question, NEVER COPY ANY PHRASES FROM EITHER PASSAGE!!!! That is considered plagiarism and it could get your test canceled!
      Keep in mind that the TOEFL iBT is not testing your knowledge of English: it is testing how well you know the TOEFL rules and how well you can follow the RUBRIC. The main objective of the Writing Section Integrated Task is to accurately state the main points from the listening passage and whether they support or oppose the related points from the reading passage.

    what would happen if i do not have enough time to write 200 or 300 words ?

    • @WilliamHearnTOEFL_Tutor
      @WilliamHearnTOEFL_Tutor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Dave! Good question. If you find yourself running out of time before writing the minimum of 300 words for the Independent Question, you must consider the reason for not having enough time. Is it because you don't know what to say, you can't type fast enough, or that your English skills are not ready yet? For many of my students, not knowing what to say is a common problem. If that is your issue, keep in mind that neither of the ETS graders, 1 human and 1 artificial intelligence program, care what you have to say as long as it follows the RUBRIC. If your issue is that you can't type fast enough, practice on a US QWERTY style keyboard to become more familiar with the location of the keys. If your issue is that your English skills aren't up to par with the test requirements, take an English class, I know . . . NOT what we want to hear but there is no substitute for actually knowing English grammar. Finally, the main way to is to make an outline first. It seems counterintuitive, but the way to go faster in the Writing section is to slow down and make an outline. You have 30 minutes to write. You should be spending 8 - 12 minutes making an outline first. Once your outline is done, if you can type 30 - 35 wpm, it takes just about 10 minutes to write your essay. Hope this answers your question.

    I have a question about the integrated task in the writing section, you have mentioned that the preferred length of the essay is from 150-225 words.
    Can I just mention the main ideas from both the reading and the listening without any details.
    All the details and the explanation of the topic are important?
    And of course I won't forget to clarify the relationship between the two passages and to state from which passage I am mentioning the information.
    I think by this I can manage my time to finish in the 20 minutes.

    • @WilliamHearnTOEFL_Tutor
      @WilliamHearnTOEFL_Tutor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question, Mary. The details from the LISTENING are crucial to a high score!! Stating the details accurately in the order they appear in the listening section and stating the relationship between the listening and reading is the main objective. You can skimp on details from the reading, but be sure to state the details from the listening. Email me an essay and I will evaluate it for you.
