Honestly, I find Martellus betrayal to be one of those funny situation where Martellus realizes that no one was a traitor, so instead of making a fool of himself by displaying a no named random bloodraven to be the traitor, he instead chooses to be one and make a total show of it by going all out.

I think Martellus is kind of like a "Bonus" boss in this sense: he fights you only if you kept everyone from falling to Chaos, and he has the toughest fight of the traitors. Assuming a fresh playthrough it is unlikely that you will get Martellus as your traitor

this happens right before the climactic battle against ulkair and eliphas. it would have not aided eliphas/kyras at all if he had stayed hidden any longer. in fact, distracting the aramus squad with this fight right in such a critical time would be the wiser choice. also he helped them find the traitor but it sent the squad on a wild goose chase that corrupted them further.

NakedSnake1836 Tarkus can take a melta. Avitus only gets heavy bolters, missile launchers and lascannons. The reason the multimelta is so good on thule is that he gets the melta sweep ability (erase everything in a 90 degree arc in front of you) and he can get close enough to use it because his melee abilities are so strong, particularly is ground pound ability that sends enemies flying, destroys cover, stuns vehicles and hits everyone around him. He also tanks like a boss, can self repair and act as mobile cover and rally point for the squad. Dude's a beast.

BS Metalbawkes: "Now I'm the devastator brothers!"
There is some interesting things about fighting Martellus, it is possible to keep all squads pure, but FC in max corruption(throug gear, etc.). In this case the game decided that none of the squad can be designated as Traitor, and since the FC can't be the traitor, the game decides that Martellus will be the designated Traitor. Perhaps the FC gaslight him so much that he accepts the role of traitor, he must have 100 in influencing.

  • @Shyyrn

It is almost definitely Avitus. In Retribution, Tarkus describes how he and the traitor 'served together on Kronus.' It was already explicitly stated that Avitus and Tarkus were together on Kronus, and besides, Thaddeus would have been too young to have served at the time.

For all the betrayals in terms of which ones were best written and had the most compelling reasons that fit the character:
Avitus had the best reason because he finally realized the truth of Warhammer 40K, in the grim dark there is only war. He is right about it all being pointless, endless slaughter for the amusement of the gods and having had a role in the unjustified slaughter of the Imperial Guard on Kronus would shake anyone's faith. He also showed gradual signs of his sanity slipping over the course of Dawn of War 2 and Chaos Rising. This one is canon because it makes the most sense and has no plot-holes.
Jonah is 2nd because he never made the choice, but was instead forced by a demon against which he had no defense due to mental exhaustion against the hive mind and the undermining of his psychic wards by Kyras. The fact that he was still resisting made it all the more tragic. The only problem with this is that nobody noticed or sensed that Jonah was possessed that whole time and none of the holy relics the ravens had revealed him.
Cyrus is third because his reasons make sense and he is right about how Boreale screwed up Kaurava. However, is it very dumb and unlike the brilliant Cyrus to believe that he alone could conquer the Aurelia sub sector and defeat everyone else. HE could have given in to complete insanity, but that just doesn't seem like the cool, calculating Cyrus. It also goes against a lot of his own teachings about knowing thine own mortality and such.
Martellus is 4th. It makes sense that he would feel abandoned and accept Eliphas' offer if it meant survival. Being a techmarine also makes his faith in the Emperor much more questionable since he instead worships the Omnissiah, which is a much more morally questionable deity. He also did not have as close a relationship with his battle brothers as the others, making betrayal much easier. The only problem comes when he actually helped them figure out that he was the traitor. Maybe he hoped the space hulk would do them in, or maybe he helped because it would allow him to reveal himself at the right moment, or convince them to join him, but he could have simply stayed quiet and Chaos would have won so he is very stupid.
Tarkus is 5th. Being possessed by a bolter that he wasn't even seen using before that is very contrived and him simply spouting quotes from the Codex shows that he simply lost it because reasons. If he was that far gone someone would have noticed since he was at the point where he was spouting gibberish to his gun. This was absolutely nothing like the Tarkus we knew. It makes no sense that he would touch an obviously corrupted weapon, let alone use it.
And last and most definitely least, Thaddeus is just an idiot. He gave in to the first temptation he was offered despite it obviously being a trick. He doesn't fear death so he should have been fine dying in a final stand against the Tyranids, they completed their mission of crippling the hive fleet so Meridian was safe. In the end he proved that he was a stupid, gullible, naive child. He really believed he was invincible too.

Perhaps he was hoping your actions would cause the downfall of one of the others while making himself look good.
Hell, whose to say only 1 of the options happened. Kyras may have offered Thaddeus his deal & at the same time tell to do Eliphas' bidding. Cyrus & Tarkus could've easily gone either way depending on your own darkness (or lack of). And Jonah probably was fighting the demon's scratching in his mind, and resisting despite Kyras selling him down the river.

  • @rustkarl

    Tarkus always was the saddest.

cyrus spits out pure truth after pure truth. you can't argue with him, he is the "reasonable marines" guy. on top of using actual tactics and camouflage, its also more logical to use the black legion for the imperium instead of serving the incompetent, corrupt or straight up chaos worshiping leaders of the blood ravens. but i will admit that i find kyras more sympathetic than eliphas or gabriel and i would have stood by his side if i was a blood raven during the events of the game

he was hoping that the warp energies in the space hulk would either kill or corrupt the commander, either that or the commander would reach a point where he would be willing to join Kyras and his corrupt Blood Ravens. It is also implied that in this scenario Martellus made up the difficulties with the logic engine and needing the one from the space hulk, also he made up about how long it was taking.

Gabriel just remains renegade in all those endings and in fully chaos ending Gabriel says that he will hunt you down for turning chaos. in corrupted one he executes you.

  • @ZeroCanalX

Avitus. Thaddeus did not serve on Kronus and Tarkus mentioned that traitor was there with him. Thaddeus either died during the ten years gap in action or is with Force Commander on Crusade of Penalty.

One thing that created a massive dissonance for me was Martellus' behavior in mission compared to what the traitor said in his transmissions.
On one side, the traitor says that
A: He will not be party to the murder of brother Blood Ravens
B: He will not help the enemy again if they used the vox codes to ambush more Battle Brothers
Yet, with Martellus, he's happy to slaughter as many of his former brothers as his abilities will allow, saying among other things:
A: That he will personally crush them in tribute to the Dark Gods
B: That he has longed for the day he could finally kill them
    C: "Kill the Blood Ravens!"
If Martellus was the traitor, why exactly will he say he won't help the enemy slaughter his own brothers? It doesn't make sense

Martellus hasn't been a traitor for that long. He won't magically suddenly get the virus and digivolve into an Obliterator for turning to Chaos.
He needs to become infected with Ob. virus either through being in contact with an Obliterator or being forcibly infected with it, then there's the time required for it to take effect.

  • @GearShotgun
    @GearShotgun 12 ปีที่แล้ว

yeah it is pretty obvious, Araghast says theres a traitor in their ranks after the battle at the ice works, which means one of the taskforce was already a traitor, thing is they didn't find Martellus and bring him back until after that, so it couldn't be him. Not to mention that Avitus has been all doom and gloom the whole time.

You know, Martellus being the only somewhat shallow traitor makes sense.
After all, if you've managed to disqualify every member of the ground team, that means you're the nicest guy in Warhammer 40K.
