Tough choice as we haven’t been the snow for 4 years now and we had 30 degrees for over a year before cooling down in the almost continuous rain in the NZ spring 🤣. Would have loved sailing around NZ as we think it’s one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
@@CatGreatcircle yes NZ is a beautiful place for sure. This years weather has certainly been colder and wetter than most years, just look at the floods in Oz so far this year.

I was wondering if you have any input in to the choice of a carbon mast vs aluminum when it comes to cruising, I know the performance benefits are great, I’m wondering more about maintenance and how the mast is looking after a few thousand miles in the sun and maybe some scuffs from equipment? Thanks in advance
Hi Max, indeed both the carbon mast and the carbon cross do have a price tag. We’re 100% sure though we would choose both of them again on our next Outremer. 18.000 miles now and the mast still looks fine and the fixed (non rotating) version doesn’t need more maintenance than the alu one.
The insurance seems to be the most expensive element of the whole trip. We used to be insured at Pantaenius but their quotation was just ridiculous. Finally we found a flat fee insurance at Helvetia, still not cheap and with a pretty high excess for a big part of the trip

Now that you have sailed half way around the world, how do you like your sail selections? If you now needed to choose only 1 sail between downwind gennaker (on furler) and A2, which one would you take (assuming you still have your other sails as well)?
If I had to choose it would be the downwind gennaker even though it can be difficult furling and unfurling it without getting caught by itself. The range of wind you can use it in is bigger and it’s kind of easier to leave it on at night for different crew combinations
You should lookup Noel and Litara Barrott on their hand build boat Sina. They live onboard in the town basin. Have two circumnavigations under their belts via the capes both times.

I can't believe you're at the halfway point already. Seems like you started just a couple months ago. While back home be sure to get those maintenance checks on yourselves. Get a complete physical done, visit all the *ologists so you'll be good for the rest of the trip when you continue in March. How are your friends who had to leave the tour for medical reasons? I hope you get to see them back home. How is the chef doing at her new job? (I'm sorry, I have a bad memory for names.)

We just met the Spekeendjes last week and had fun together. Tina seems to have a rest from working really hard as well
