Ys II Complete Speedrun -

- This is a speedrun of Ys II Complete for the PC, recorded via Fraps at 30 FPS. I timed this run by traditional RTA standards (selecting "New Game" to dealing the final hit to Darm), which comes out to 1:05:02, an improvement of about ~4:20 over my Chronicles+ personal best. If going by SDA timing (first movement input to final hit on Darm), I think the time comes out to 1:04:17.
Regarding the ending, I apologize that I had to edit out the very final scene with the Goddesses and the Black Pearl, as it'd likely conflict with TH-cam's censorship policy. That said, I'm posting an upload to archive.org with the scene intact, should that be an issue for anyone (or if there's other issues with the video displayed above):

Commentated version (quality is a bit worse):

Anyway, this is a really solid run, outside of several botched enemy kills, minor though they were. Other notable improvements would be a 3 cycle Velagunder kill, which maybe I could've had here, but didn't get the necessary extra small fireball in during the 2nd cycle (would save a couple seconds).
An improved Gelaldy kill is also possible, but pretty unlikely. While I haven't quite managed it, I'm certain that with extreme precision, he can be killed the 3rd time he absorbs the worm, or the 4th time he releases it, which I think would save about ~10-12 seconds. That said, this run did lose a couple seconds to him because I couldn't kill the Gene right away, but there wasn't much I could do about that.
Druegar can also be done about ~10 seconds quicker if I let him keep me pinned against the wall all throughout, but it's extremely risky (despite the close call here, the strat in the video is usually fairly safe).
Dalles and Darm could theoretically be done faster, but both fights already went a good deal smoother than expected this run. Dalles can potentially be hit 4 times per appearance (though 3 is what you'll usually get, if your positioning's good), and for Darm, it's possible to get "stuck" on him (at least his 2nd phase), allowing your hits to land super fast.
Finally, I didn't go for the glitch to walk through the rock golems, mostly because it depends on RNG to get the enemies where you need them without losing time, and even if you do that, getting the double KO isn't easy to do on Easy difficulty (ironic, I know =p). Not sure how much time it saves, but if my segmented run (WIP) is any indication, it's ~10 seconds ahead entering the Velagunder fight.
In all, I'd guess there's ~40 - 70 seconds (just an estimate, I truly have no clue) that can still come off this time, but realistically speaking, I don't see more than maybe ~20 or so coming off the time. For now, I'm quite happy with the way things went this run.
To those confused by the game version listed by TH-cam in this video: this is the Japanese PC Complete version from 2001. TH-cam doesn't have this version in particular listed (to be fair, there are a lot of different versions of Ys I & II), but that doesn't stop their system from auto-assigning a game title - often times a wrong title, probably on account of TH-cam having an incomplete database. I even tried to leave the game's title field blank, but TH-cam assigned something anyway, so I'm just gonna leave it tagged as the 1988 release until a better solution comes along.
I love that Luta is still carrying the Silver/Cleria Shield in the ending.
Yeah, that's a small detail that differs between the older Eternal and Complete versions compared to the newer Chronicles/+ versions. It has to do with how the ending scenes are handled. In Eternal and Complete, the ending scenes are more or less an automated part of the game, if that makes sense. So little details like whether or not Luta still has the Cleria Shield are reflected in the ending. But in Chronicles/+, the ending scenes are just video files that play, so there's only one state you'll see those scenes (the artstyle choice notwithstanding).
Boss Timeline (Start)
9:12 Belagunder
20:08 Tyalmath
28:15 Gelaldy
42:55 Druegar
48:55 Zava
59:25 Duless
1:04:01 Dahm
Yooo, that basement section got my toes twitchin'. Killer run.
Hey you're the guy that made the guide that I just followed to beat both games. Didn't expect to run into you in my recommended.
You could say that speedrunning these two games led to me writing the guides. I did a lot of testing to refine the route, and some of that was figuring out which triggers were essential to advance the story, some of which wasn't entirely clear back then. Plus, speedrunning often involves learning all sorts of odds and ends about the game one runs, even if a lot of it doesn't help lower the time. I mostly just wanted there to be a thorough documentation of the info I had collected over the years, and writing a guide seemed like a good way to do that.
Anyway, I'm glad you found the guide useful!
Great run, dude. Nice work!
-14:40-- Actually the most awesome part-
1:05:15 Nice Run! It was really good, only played Ys VI though so didn't get all of it but it was really impressive.
Nostalgia hits so hard with this one.
Very good! Thanks for the effort!!
What a perfect run! :O
Nah, it's improvable. But thank you. :)
Thank you for this ^^ made my playthrough easier and faster.
You were so fast the doctor hasn't had the time to come

hello korzic. just not have your reply in the twich. so i leave msg in here.
YS II complete(english language ver) is official release? or fan translation patch?if do it speedrun by english language ver. it will be problem?
i need to know for doing new speedrun. thx
Oh, sorry, I don't log into Twitch much, didn't get any e-mail notifications from them that I recall.
For Complete, the English translation patch by Nightwolve and Deuce is fan-made, so it's not allowed (it might be slower anyway, on account of English text generally displaying slower). The English translation for Chronicles / Chronicles+ by XSeed is official, and is allowed.
If you still want to do the Complete version, you could just run that unpatched. I myself don't know any other languages besides English, and both Ys I & II are pretty easy to play in Japanese, given that there's not much menu work. Up to you, though.
Alright. than i'll do speedrun unpatched(japanese ver)
thx about reply and teach me the point.
So did you leave the goddesses turning into statues cutscene out?
Yeah, I figured the video might get reported due to nudity, brief though it is (it's still in the original recording, I just edited it out). It probably would've been fine to leave it in given it's in regards to fictional animated characters and (IMO) pretty tame, but I didn't want to risk it.
@@Korzic
I never saw that cutscene.

TH-cam is not a human anymore.
この時代から普通にクオリティ高かったんだなー。
