To those confused by the game version listed by TH-cam in this video: this is the Japanese PC Complete version from 2001. TH-cam doesn't have this version in particular listed (to be fair, there are a lot of different versions of Ys I & II), but that doesn't stop their system from auto-assigning a game title - often times a wrong title, probably on account of TH-cam having an incomplete database. I even tried to leave the game's title field blank, but TH-cam assigned something anyway, so I'm just gonna leave it tagged as the 1987 release until a better solution comes along.
No way around it. :( Not unless you take 5 minutes or more to kill Vagullion. Mind you, that is doable on Easy difficulty, but not worthwhile in a speedrun.
Amazing run! I got nervous there when your HP dropped to 1 towards the top of the tower. I just finished this game for the first time casually and I learned the hard way how unforgiving this game can be in regards to saving your progress.
joesquarecuadro88 The 1 HP certainly was interesting. Usually I don't take too much damage from the normal enemies in the tower, or if I do, it usually doesn't add up quite like that.
Well, this run was on Easy difficulty, making the bosses a lot easier, Dark Fact included. Only Jenocres and Yogleks / Omulgun pose any significant threat on Easy, and that's just because of being under-leveled or not fully equipped.
38:50 seeing this quick-kill makes me salty. I have now fused with the salt pearl to become one with the salt essence. This dahm boss. I never beat him. And here you are taking him out before the beat drops. I am salt.
Also I really find it funny when they placed a character Sara just to hand you a plot device and promptly killed her off-screen, that’s some damn cheesy writing I didn’t catch when playing as a pre-teen.

Hi, sorry for the unrelated question but do you know how to fix fps problems with this game? The second one runs at 500+ fps while the first one runs at 10 fps for me.
Alianger I've never experienced framerate problems myself, so I'm probably not the best person to ask. ^^; Suggestions I've seen are to enable V-Sync, try playing in windowed mode, or to use a framerate limiter.
Alianger Are you playing the same version of the game as in this video (Complete, the one with the English fan translation patch), or the Steam version? The Steam version allows for different resolutions, but that's not an option for the Complete version. Regarding a framerate limiter, this was the article I saw linked (seems to be for NVidia cards?): pcgamesbeat.blogspot.com/2012/09/how-to-cap-frame-rates-with-fps-limiter.html Hopefully that helps. If not, I don't know what else to tell you, except to try posting to Xseed's forums, or to a Ys fan forum (seldane.proboards.com is the one I frequent).
Thanks a lot for your help, I'll be sure to check out the speedrun later. :) I think I'll just get the chronicles version if I can't get this to work by tomorrow or so, it seems extremely similar.
Alianger Yeah, the Steam version is indeed almost the exact same thing, just that there are options for different music and art styles (for the close-up scenes). It does lack mouse support, as well as a couple minor menu shortcuts, but that stuff's pretty trivial. Just be aware that the suggestions I pulled were from a search of the Steam forums, so it's not a guarantee that playing that version will be any different. But whatever the case, I hope you find a solution to this problem.
First, this video is of the Complete version, not Eternal. The graphics in Eternal are slightly different compared to Complete and Chronicles, but with a couple small exceptions, the screen layout is exactly the same between these 3 versions. Complete and Chronicles added a couple small gameplay changes over Eternal, such as awarding 500 EXP for the Luta Gemma sidequest (nothing before), drastically reducing the cost of certain items (the Wing and Mirror were particularly expensive in Eternal), and a couple other neat touches like being able to find the 3rd equipment set in Darm Tower if you didn't already buy / find it. Then there's things they didn't get right (IMO), such as making you be a level higher for the first boss (but slightly more EXP from the early enemies to compensate, as well as the Luta thing mentioned above). As far as Ys II goes, Eternal is pretty much identical to Complete and Chronicles, just that Eternal had some nice glitches with Time Stop magic for a couple bosses (even skipping one). If you're asking about speedrun differences, read the first section of these two pages: kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Ys_I kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Ys_II
This isn't the original version of Ys I, which was released back in 1987. This version (Complete) was actually released in 2001, which is a slightly updated version of Eternal, and *that* version is a remake they did in 1998. (Apologies if this is confusing, but Ys I & II have seen so many different iterations over the years - mainly ports - it's hard to keep track of them all.) EDIT: I'm guessing the source of the confusion comes from the game tag TH-cam is showing for this video. Pretty sure I didn't touch those settings at all or left them blank, and TH-cam incorrectly assumes this is the PC Engine / Turbo CD version. The real version isn't in TH-cam's system, and they apparently won't allow "gaming" videos to have an empty or custom name field (you know, in case the game isn't in their system), so I guess the exact version will have to remain inaccurate for now. I think I'll just modify it to the original 1987 release for the time being.
+Zapperrix I had the Blue Necklace equipped first, so it was safe to equip the Evil Ring. Furthermore, the Evil Ring doesn't actually kill you until you completely exit the subscreens and other menus. So technically, you can equip and remove the Evil Ring without the Blue Necklace equipped, but once you return to the regular game screen, that's when the check seems to happen.
+Fyrion Heart Do you mean not using the Silver Shield/Armor in Darm Tower? If so, those + the Silver Sword are taken away when you get caught in the teleport trap. At that point, it's better to forget about re-obtaining them. They were gotten in the first place because the game requires you to have done so before you can get inside the tower. The other thing I can think of that you might be referring to is not equipping the armor at the very beginning of the game, in which case, why bother getting them? Before you can get Sara's Crystal, the game requires you to have one of a sword, body armor, and shield, and those are the fastest to purchase. At low levels like this run was, the armor serves little to no purpose in terms of defense, so there's not much point to actually using them.

I love that in the middle of the run you realized:"Shit, it is still Ys. Let's get grinding!"
No way around it. :( Not unless you take 5 minutes or more to kill Vagullion. Mind you, that is doable on Easy difficulty, but not worthwhile in a speedrun.

Man, this game has such fantastic music and sounds.
I got into Ys recently and I have to say this run is great!
That was a KILLER run. Especially nice work with the final boss. That game took me like 15 hours first run. That was just too good.
Well, this run was on Easy difficulty, making the bosses a lot easier, Dark Fact included. Only Jenocres and Yogleks / Omulgun pose any significant threat on Easy, and that's just because of being under-leveled or not fully equipped.
wow you finished the final boss just in 3 sec , well done
This version of the OST is good!
I want Ys 1 for the Switch so bad!
you absolute legend!

This dahm boss. I never beat him. And here you are taking him out before the beat drops.
I am salt.
This run was played on the Easy difficulty, if it makes you feel better. =p
Also I really find it funny when they placed a character Sara just to hand you a plot device and promptly killed her off-screen, that’s some damn cheesy writing I didn’t catch when playing as a pre-teen.
she looked so important I was wondering if she was actually dead xD
x68?

Where can I get a framerate limiter? Windowed mode doesn't seem to be an option. Thanks

***** thanks! Also great run btw
How did you kill that centipede so fast?
A combination of getting the Silver Sword early + being level 7.
This game looks beautiful for 1989

@@Korzic Ohhh that makes sense. Yeah I just read what was in the description.
How come when you equipped the evil ring it didn't kill you? Is that a bug in the complete version only?
+Zapperrix I had the Blue Necklace equipped first, so it was safe to equip the Evil Ring. Furthermore, the Evil Ring doesn't actually kill you until you completely exit the subscreens and other menus. Ah, so that explains it. Great run btw! I really enjoyed watching it.
+MrEJ2003 It opens the door in Rado's Annex (32:55 of this run).
noob question: why remove armor and shield?
+Fyrion Heart Do you mean not using the Silver Shield/Armor in Darm Tower? If so, those + the Silver Sword are taken away when you get caught in the teleport trap. I have only done 1 time this Ys so i didn't understand those points ^^
You re great!
