Beautiful down there! So much history down in your area...I will see it someday. We got a drive in and a roller rink here in Kenton Ohio...Great upload, I love these more than anything, THANKS BoY!
Great tour, Boy! I love the glimpses of the really old areas, both the mansions and the sleazy areas, all buried in the middle of the "modern" city. We have a couple of areas "uptown" here where you just don't go if you have any other choice, and you DON'T stop. Those old ferries stir memories. I remember crossing the Mississippi on them, and even the Ohio when I was a kid. Bridges were scarce. We crossed the Chesapeake Bay on them, too; big-ass ones.
When I was a little fart we lived in Belle Chase, soon as you come out of the Harvey Tunnel and into Belle Chase that first dirt /shell road to the left that goes to the leveee, next to the giant cranes and shipps /shipping container docks, up against the levee at the end of that street ...,.as silly as it sounds me saying that here , it dont amount to s**t but it is always fun for someone to spark an otherwise forgotten memory as you just did , And Id bet you know that exact old road ........that big old house at the end with that big screen porch LOL........I went fishing there a lot , as a 3-4 year old with a pole and some string , no bait or hook , and im pretty sure what was a sewer ditch ....thanks again ,
The museum (I don't think it's a railroad museum, though) there is in the old Illinois Central terminal, which was originally the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad terminal before that line was acquired by the I.C. The I.C. by the way, was the railroad that ran the passenger train made famous by Woody Guthrie in his song about that train, the "City of New Orleans."
Real reason the ships don't go north of BR is that the Corps of Engineers wouldn't dredge farther north. Once in the 1960's Exxon (Standard Oil at that time) brought a super tanker up the river, but once loaded it couldn't be turned around in the shallow river.
Very pretty city you live in JB. Love all the big oak trees. The town that I live in England, the main church was built in the 14th century so you can imagine I smiled a bit when you pointed out the "old" churches and houses. Most of the houses we live in are older than 250 years.
That Manchac area and that end of the Pontchartrain ,Freiner Beach , and the Bonnet Carre Spillway was our playground back in the day fishing ,crabbing , crawfishing ,hunting and swim /ski stuff .... BTW We had a pet alligator kept him in the bath tub for 3 years , Me and my two little brothers used to take baths with him , back in those days we didn't know any better..A life changing event for me and that alligator , my mothers tupperware party ,and a guest who had to pee really really bad ......
I enjoyed this very much.I've been to B.R. hundreds of times,my sister lives down there.I spent this past Christmas down there. We had smoked oysters on the grill and lots of beer.
I think you sir mentioned you were 60 years old , Im 61 , hell we may have even known each other once upon a time , Im from Winn / Natchitoches Parishes but was raised down south , went to Jr. High at DiVall Jr. high , on the River Road north of Port Allen , went to Catholic school in Port Allen as well and did I hear you mention a club you used to play at ....are you a musician too .......Those sugar cane fields were my p[lay ground , we moved too much to actually have any friends my age . But this just floods me with misplaced memories Fo Sho Dar Moi Che
Old State Capitol is a combination of six different kinds of architecture. Samuel Clemons (Mark Twain) watched its construction during his trips up and down the river. When complete he commented that all that hideous building needed was a stick of dynamite to take it down.
I remember as a kid in the back seat of my parent's car going across the Mississippi river and wondering if there was actually land on the other side. It's huge! I love this video JB and TY for sharing.
Would you happen to have any sources for Baton Rouge history and surrounding areas? I'm specifically looking into 1900 - 1930's. Love the video. Great hearing a local accent as well.
FreeHomeBrew Search Google, Or come to Louisianas museum of natrule history. I did a 2 part video tour of the museum. Search my channel for the 2 videos
***** I did do google searches before I arrived here ^^;; I'm not from the states and I'm having a hard time getting the results I need specifically for Baton Rouge. For example, I wanted to know how people navigated the swamps before the 1920's and all I get are modern day tours. The relevant results seem to be swamped (*ha*) by the popular ones. I'll also try emailing the relevant authorities by Monday to see if they know good sources.
