  • China claims they aren't military bases, but their actions say otherwise.

Since 2014, China has been building islands in the middle of the South China Sea. What were once underwater reefs are now sandy islands complete with airfields, roads, buildings, and missile systems. In less than two years, China has turned seven reefs into seven military bases in the South China Sea, one of the most contentious bodies of water in the world.
The sea is one of the most important areas of ocean in the world. It’s estimated to hold 11 billion barrels of oil, 109 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, and 10 percent of the world’s fisheries. Most importantly, 30 percent of the world’s shipping trade flows through the South China Sea to the busy ports of Southeast Asia. It’s an incredibly important strategic area, and five countries currently claim some part of it.
Most countries base their claims off the United Nations Law of the Seas, which says a country’s territory extends 200 miles off its shores, an area called the exclusive economic zone, or EEZ. Any trade or resources that fall in a country’s EEZ belong to that country; they’re its sovereign territory. Any area that is not in an EEZ is considered international waters and subject to UN maritime law, meaning it’s shared by everyone. Every country in the region, which includes Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei, and Vietnam, bases its claim to the South China Sea on the UN’s EEZ laws - except China.
China argues it has a historical claim to the South China Sea, dating back to naval expeditions in the 15th century. After World War II, the Japanese Empire lost control of the South China Sea, and China took advantage of the moment to reclaim it. On maps, it started drawing a dashed line that encompassed most of the South China Sea. This line became its official claim and is known today as the Nine-Dash Line, because it always has nine dashes. In 1973, when the UN law established EEZs, China reaffirmed its Nine-Dash Line, refusing to clarify the line’s boundaries and rejecting other countries’ claims.
Since then, tensions have built around who rightfully owns the South China Sea. The dispute has centered on the Spratly Islands, an archipelago at the heart of the South China Sea. Currently, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam claim some part of the Spratly Island chain. They’ve asserted their claims by putting small buildings, ports, and even some people on what are essentially rocks in the middle of the ocean.
But the Spratlys are very important, because whichever country can successfully claim them can extend its EEZ to include them, thus gaining miles of precious sovereign territory. This is why China began building up islands in 2014. By turning these rocks into military bases, the Chinese are now able to support hundreds of ships, bolstering their presence in the region. They are using fishing boats, surveillance ships, and navy destroyers to set up blockades around other countries’ islands and defend their own. This is all done very cautiously and in small steps in order to avoid sparking a wider conflict.
Since China began building islands, the disputes have not become violent. But tensions are building in the region. As China deploys more of its military to the Spratlys, other countries are getting nervous and building up their own islands. It’s a complex situation that will continue to gain international attention, for better or for worse.

Oriental Chopstick these reefs are home to many different species and reefs are important to the ocean and the life that lives in it. As they said the South China Sea is home to 10% of the world fisheries, building on reefs can cause a decline in the amount of fish species in the area.

Zero Cool I completely agree with you, I subscribed to VOX primarily for these educational videos. I wouldn't say I dismiss VOX's political videos, But I view it with healthy scepticism. This is a wide spread problem with the media today, not only do they not make a distinction between an editorial and the news,The opinions expressed are either always liberal or conservative. There is no balance between them.which is why so many have come to distrust the media.

      ThatF_inGuy no, not a all,
you see the news outlet shouldn't, in a purely theoretical sense, express their opinion on the topics presented, but simply publish the news, and when they do express their opinion , they should clarify that the article is an editorial, because some people can't differentiate.
The news should be neutral, because when it isn't it alienates a whole group of society.

@Alex The Awesome After the victory of World War II, China signed the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation. When the first 11 intermittent lines were announced in 1947, China demanded Japan to return the occupied sea areas. At that time, the international community did not raise any objection, and the neighboring Southeast Asian countries never made diplomatic protests. Many countries, including the countries surrounding the South China Sea, as well as the Soviet Union, Japan, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, have also drawn 11 intermittent lines on the maps published, indicating that they belong to China.
Since the 1990s, 800 Chinese fishermen in the South China Sea have been arrested, sentenced and 25 killed. Before the Chinese Navy cruised in the South China Sea, Chinese fishermen were the real victims. Please don't pretend to be a victim. It's ridiculous.

Hi Vox, constructive criticism: the Chinese are terrified of the positivity of a naval blockade. As an export driven economy they need the access to markets in Europe, Asia etc. through the south China sea. more importantly if their economy falls into ressesion (e.g. because of a US blockade) , unrest in the population may very quickly become an issue for the Chinese government to the extent of political revolution or civil war.
So the Chinese are not taking control of the south China sea because they are mean and greedy, but because they have to in order to secure their own safety and sovereignty.
just saying this issue is a bit more complex than you make it appear.

I generally like Vox, but they did not do their homework on this one.
First, they presented the story like it is the law-abiding countries with small claims vs greedy land-grabbing China claiming everything. Taiwan was not mentioned at all. Why? Because Taiwan has exactly the same claims as China, for exactly the same reasons, and Taiwan is a US ally.
Second, why did the Chinese in PRC and ROC disagree with the Hague, when it is so obvious the islands are closer to the Philippines? Because the EEZ is projected around not only the mainland, but around inhabitable islands as well. So if a country has an inhabited island in the Spratlies, they hold the entire group. And there is such an island, with fresh water, vegetation and so on - Taiping, currently held by Tawan. The Hague considered it a "rock", incapable or supporting habitation and therefore not projecting EEZ. I'd say they were not being objective. If Taiping is considered an island, then China has a reasonable claim over the islands under the UNCLOS international law.
Third, Air Defence Identification Zones are common, the US and Japan have vast zones outside their territorial waters and even outside their EEZs. Painting the Chinese ADIZ like an illegal land-grab is misleading at best.
Finally, the law which the US is accusing China of breaking, UNCLOS, is not even *accepted* by the US! It's literally "You have to follow the laws we made... but we don't have to!". No wonder the Chinese are accusing the US of being unfair.

No need of provable human settlement and governance, only that they can "sustain human habitation or economic life".

The US participated in writing it, signed it, enforces it, but did not ratify it - so it does not apply to them.

    • @CommandoPootis
      @CommandoPootis 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@Nikola Tasev, so if islands get EEZ and rocks do not, then how are man-made islands viewed in this law? A country could just build an island that is capable of sustaining human habitation and economic life on what previously was just a simple rock or corral reef, like what China is doing now. How are these loophole islands addressed?

    • @nikolatasev4948
      @nikolatasev4948 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As far as I know man-made islands are viewed in their original form. If it was originally a submerged reef (like most are) it does not extend the EEZ.
"A country could just build an island that is capable of sustaining human habitation "
Making an island with freshwater spring is not simple. You can't just dredge a harbor, pile the coral and extend a runway, like nations are doing right now. You need a lot of silt/soil and vegetation in order to hold an aquifer, as well as a long period of rain to fill it.
Taiping is a natural freshwater island, though, so it does not change the Spratly situation.

I know most people won’t care, but their explanation is so incomplete that it’s factually wrong. I’m a huge fan of Vox but they really did a terrible job with this video. Vox definitely did not double check this video with a lawyer specialized in international law.

I have to quote from another commentor in this video, he wrote:
"This video misses out lots of important points and is obviously biased. The 9 dashed lines is inherited from the 11 dashed lines from the ROC government and was drawn before Vietnam and the Philippines decolonized. The Vietnamese ruler even sent Mao a letter that acknowledge China's ownership of the islands. The consensus among the countries was that nobody touches the islands in this generation, and that the future generations may have a better solution to solve the conflict. Then Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines begin to take control of more and more islands, reclaimed islands and built bases on top of them BEFORE China did any reclamation or build any bases. The US did nothing at all. Then when China started doing the same, all of a sudden China is the "bully". Vox also left out a VERY important thing about the EEZ. It does not settle disputes about sovereignty. If China or any other country has sovereignty of just 1 of the islands, it can claim 200 nautical miles of EEZ from that island. UNCLOS's EEZ does not settle this. Again, extremely important detail here is being left out.
Also, "The Hague" is just a place. There are many international bodies in "The Hague". The body making the ruling is the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA). It is NOT the International Court of Justice(ICJ) arm which is part of the UN. The PCA is not part of the UN judicial body The intentional vague reports of merely using "the Hague" is so misleading. Arbitration by definition means "the hearing and determining of a dispute or the settling of differences between parties by a person or persons chosen or agreed to by them". China did not agree to it, and thus, it is by definition not a real arbitration. It is a kangaroo court. Not to mention that the US did not even ratify the UNCLOS. Vox obviously didn't do its research thoroughly."

To all people saying that the United States of America is doing the same thing in different countries, I can assure you this is very different. The US is not building islands on coral reefs (which account for around 10 percent of the fish population), and it's not building Islands, the US has treaties around the world with countries that allow it to build bases. Unlike the US, China does not have these treaties. The whole South Chinese Sea is also not Chinese, so this means that China is building islands in territory it does not own...
Very different from the United States of America...
I'm not American, I just need people to know the facts before commenting.

It is different from the U.S, as China is building stuff within their own Territory.
When ROC (China) declared 11 dash line and was recognized by other countries including the west, UNCLOS was not signed, Philippine was not even decolonized.
Timeline of South China sea islands after WW2:
1945 Japan surrendered and islands were returned to China
1946 China officially accepted the islands and went there to build monuments over the islands as a symbol of sovereignty, note that America at that time provided China with 9 vessels to help China regain control.
1948 China declared the 11 dash line officially to the international society and was recognized
      1982 UNCLOS was concluded
      1989 Philippine declared independence
There was no dispute regarding China's sovereignty decades before, it all happened after America's Pivot to Asia strategy.

+Sam Hofman Some of the US treaties are questionable, such as Hawaii fighting for independence from US but losing and being taken over by the US.
US airbases in Okinawa Japan was built as a result of Japanese WW2 surrender, so you can't really say that US had Japanese permission. It as part of Japanese surrender condition.
China does not have these treaties because it claimed those territories historically before international law of the sea was created.

The problem is America used to help China regain control over that region after WW2.
And China still keeps the document from presidents of some ASEAN countries like Vietnam president decades ago, who declared they recognized China's claim over the 9 dash line including those islands.
Initially America's excuse was to help its ally philippine, but the presiedent of Philippine Duterte gave multiple slaps on Obama's face, and required U.S to get out of Philippine.
When China was weak, U.S helped, when China is getting stronger , America regrets.

As a Chinese, i want to tell you that actually Strait of Malacca is the real target of China. China's real purpose is not the territorial sea or resources of the South China Sea, but the Strait of Malacca. The South China Sea is one of the major arteries of the Chinese economy, and the Strait of Malacca is the most important channel to the South China Sea. Because the US military is currently stationed in Singapore, they can control the Malacca Strait at any time if they want to control the lifeline of the Chinese economy. Therefore, after building island and military base from the South China Sea, the Straits of Malacca entered the combat radius of the Chinese army, preventing the United States from suppressing China's weakness.

South China Sea is just China's desperate attempt to counter US bases' ability to seal off sea routes to china, and the bases around south korea and japan that are lining up China's productivity concentration in the coastal cities like a firing squad. China's army is pretty powerful has a great chance to defend China's threat on land, but there's a very high risk of the war taking place right at their coastal cities because the bases are so close to them. Their navy compared to the US navy gives them little confidence. They are not capable of building more carriers to match up the current US navy strength in order to transfer their firepower to where the US bases can seal off the sea routes, but they can afford to build islands that can project their firepower to where the seal point. In fact, these islands barely resolve China's fear, US presence in the region is just too overwhelming, and is totally not lacking in naval asset. Instead of how the video painting China as the naturally born greedy evil, and US being the police here, the fact is that it is just China's ruthless reaction to US's nicely wrapped over 50 years long plan of china containment.

Another great informative video from Vox. As a person living in Singapore, this incident hits particularly close to home. On one hand, we (not everyone) absolutely despise what China is doing at the South China Sea, but on the other hand, we do not want to offend China as we will risk our economic interests. I do hope that this doesn't escalate into war as peace is very much appreciated in the region.

    • @FreshSmog
      @FreshSmog 8 ปีที่แล้ว +54

The problem is that China seems to be offended that Singapore is intending to stay neutral, despite being a "country with a major Chinese population". You are either with, or against them, no in-between. In fact, China is already offended when Singapore claims that China should abide by international law, basically telling China that Singapore does not support them. I believe many countries in Asia will start to bend towards China when it throws around its economic weight, more so now that Trump's USA seems to be less and less reliable as a check to China's power.

@hana it's a joke but still hss the probability that it might happen soon, because of what they are doing right now in the SOUTH CHINA SEA is that they are ignoring the UN law that states that each of the countries surrounding south china sea has a right on that part within 200 miles but then CHINA CLAIMS THAT ALL OF SOUTH CHINA SEA IS THEIRS because of some historical story, which makes them Greedy in people's perspective.
Thus, the first comment says that in a joke way but then again has the probability of happening because of China's attitude.

nothing new. China still thinks like the old European Colonials: use power, if you are strong you can get what you want. This Colonial mentality has changed after WW2. Europe colonial powers learned a lesson that being attacked and/or invaded by other strong power such as the German is no fun at all.
China's opponents in the south china sea are weak countries in term of military. China's archenemy, Japan, is currently having limitation in growing their military while the US does not have any claim in the area. Without a strong country stopping China, they will get what they want, sooner or later.
