    I still have my Barlow that my Great Granddad sold me for a penny at Christmas 65 years ago. He did not believe in getting things for free. I keep it in my dresser drawer now. It is still in great whittling shape but it is only used for memories and quite contemplation of a different time and world.

      Thanks for watching! I think that is a common tradition. I was always told it was bad luck to receive a knife for free and that you had to buy it for a penny to ward off that bad luck.

    "Used little but stored badly." I love that line because it's so true of so many items. I'm stealing it.

    I love the Barlow to but now when I buy a good pocket knife and cheap you might want to check out the reserve knives by rough rider in d2 and carbon steel but I understand I want most all my knives to be American or German made to but just saying them model rough riders are hard to beat old buddy

    It is interesting that I picked up on very similar Saber Brand Barlow at a Garage Sale last week. It was made in Japan and the carbon steel blade had a very nice patina… The quality of the steel was very good.. I estimate hardness at around 58 to 60 Rockwell…all for only 50 cents..

      Some Japanese knives are pretty well made. Thanks for watching.

    Got a really nice vintage Taylor's Eye Witness two bladed lambs foot, main blade is a tiny bit worn where someone has been using a pull through but it's still outstanding. Got a 70s or 80s Pradel that needs a little work that is beyond my skill level at present but I'll get there, patience is the key here, if it's rushed now it may get ruined and it is fundamentally sound when so many Pradels are damaged because they weren't made that great to begin with. Also have a Richards of Sheffield Scout knife in an even worse state which will be a distant project, they were worse made than the Pradels so will be a good learning experience!!!!

    I picked up a nice Imperial Easy Open Jack knife at a garage sale recently for $3. The information I could find indicates that this particular model was made in Providence, RI from 1936 to 1952. These kind of finds are hard to come by because all the other old codgers who get to the sale before me have eyes like eagles when it comes to pocket knives.

      Yeah, the good ones are hard to find sometimes. Every now and then you get lucky!

    Love that U.S.A. tang stamp ........sadly it's something we see less and less of today
    on affordable / user knives . The vintage / used market in many cases is a practical option. Funny .........my next "new" knife may have been made fifty
    years ago.( well ,I'm not getting any younger either.)
    Great video . Peace , Be Free .

    What did you do to condition those scales?

    • @workbenchknifeandtool
      @workbenchknifeandtool  ปีที่แล้ว

      I cleaned them with naptha (lighter fluid) and then put a little lemon oil on them. All of the excess was wiped off but it seemed to remove the dry look they had.

    I just picked up a Camillus camp knife for a solid deal ($10). What’s your suggestion to clean it up like your video ?

      I typically use 600 and then 1000 grit wet or dry sandpaper wetted with light machine oil (3 in 1 or sewing machine oil). I wrap a small piece of the paper around a small wooden block and try to preserve the flat surfaces. I then finish with crocus cloth (dry) and the wooden block for a final polish.
