      I overheard an auction goer say that they were mad it was selling for that much because they wanted to buy it to use it, not because of the antique advertising aspect of it. If the painted words would have been worn away/not there, the price would have still been a good amount but not that much (in my opinion).

    That barn looked like it held several generations of all kinds of accumulations. I guess farmers don't discard much, thinking that someday they'll get around to fixing everything that's broken.
    I had to laugh at your comment about a tractor-trailer full of ephemera! Some people dream of fame and fortune, you dream about truckloads of old pictures and papers! You are unique! (LOL!)
    It was another enjoyable video to watch, even if you didn't buy anything. Have a good weekend!

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Glad that you enjoyed the video! Thank goodness for people like this that save all of the older items. Sure, I guess it can be seen as a type of hoarding, but essentially it also is saving history, especially with the older primitive pieces. Perhaps the barn was the "catch-all", wife said "Not in this house! To the barn!" :0)

    • @bobhamulak3646
      @bobhamulak3646 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@PaperandMoose I think those old farmers were probably the opposite of today's disposable society. They probably felt that if they were gonna' spend their hard-earned money on something, it would be theirs for life! And if it broke down they would fix it (someday), rather than dispose of it. I always respected farmers for their self-reliant attitude! That's probably why there were so many push lawnmowers there. The mindset of (especially older) farmers is that you fix what's broken, instead of throwing it out and replacing it. Remember that old Ford pick-up you saw last month. I'd bet the guy who owned that truck would have driven that truck forever, had he survived! And if Elon Musk would have offered him a brand new 'Cybertruck' in trade, that old guy would've told Elon "Heck NO!"
      You're probably right about the farmer's wife..."Don't bring that dirty, grimey what-cha-ma-call-it into MY nice clean house!" That poor farmer probably spent many lonely hours tinkering in that barn, listening to that old radio! And I'll bet he was happy!
      Take care, Renee!

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@bobhamulak3646 He probably loved being shunned out to his barn 😃 I know that when I go to an auction or estate sale & there are cigar boxes, coffee cans, & other tins used to store things, that it's a good house. The boxes & tins served as catch-alls for anything & everything that could fit in them, because one day those little things might be needed!

    • @bobhamulak3646
      @bobhamulak3646 หลายเดือนก่อน

      . Hi Renee.
      Yeah, those old farmers and people on the western frontier had to be self-sufficient, for sure. Their barns were like a small hardware store. Hardware was a valuable commodity. I remember learning that frontier people, when they were going to move and re-settle, would actually burn their houses down and sift through the ashes, just to recover the NAILS! Can you imagine that? We take for granted having hardware stores and HomeDepots these days.
      Anyway, I'm hoping someday you'll find a whole barn full of old papers and photo albums and ephemera! ...You'll hit the jackpot! I can imagine your excitement!
      Y'know, you must have a really 'old soul' inside you, to appreciate all those beautiful old things, and places! Are you the reincarnation of someone who lived many years ago, and is attached to all these things somehow? (LOL!)
      Well, take care! Stay cool! We're still in this heat wave in NJ this week. Hope it breaks soon!

    A project barn full of old wood & rusty things! That coffee bin, though. Accent piece in someone's house, I suppose. Did you happen to see what that Christmas sign went for? Really funny about those Rocket Fuel cans going for so much more that they fetch on eBay. So often these days, of course, eBay determines prices. But auctions get folks caught up in the moment! Was hoping you would come away with those Nazareth Cement sacks but there was just too much cool stuff at that auction for things to go inexpensively. I bet people drove a long way for that one. Glad you had a good time; thanks for taking us! Have a great Sunday and week ahead!

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I left in the early afternoon, so not sure what the Christmas sign sold for. I'm sure a little less than the coffee bin! :0) I'll take the coffee bin, the little red cupboard, the desk, all the cupboards, just wrap up the whole barn! The week prior at this sale, they had a few vintage Harley Davidson motorcycles that in total brought in around $30,000. Unbelievable! There were people that came to the sale just for those Harleys and waited for hours for them to be auctioned off. Little surprise that the Harley accessories sold for a pretty penny. I thought for sure when I found the Rocket Fuel can online it would have sold for more, so the under $50 price tag was a shock. Some people do not want to buy online & who knows how long it would be until another can would be available on a platform like eBay or etsy. Hope that you have a nice upcoming week!

    Hello Renee. And sometimes it’s just fun to watch the bidding wars and see just how much one’s willing to spend on a coffee bin. WOW 😮. I don’t think I could ever afford to spend money like that on 1 item that wasn’t a piece of furniture. It was very nice but not that nice. I think there was more to the Christmas sign but it was facing the wall beside it. Ok it’s really hot here I tried to mow my yard and only got half of my backyard done and that was early. I was just out trying to support my sunflowers because they’re so tall that they are leaning like they might fall and I was struggling to get it done. 2 of my sunflowers are at least 12 feet tall if not 13 . This goes to to show me that sometimes an auction is the way to go rather than an estate sale.

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      For selling or buying? I can see the benefit of both for both buyers and sellers. For those selling, having an estate sale at this home would have been difficult, definitely a digging sale. I think because of the unique aspect of some pieces, the auction allowed for potential buyers to determine the "worth" versus putting a price sticker on it for less than what it would have sold at auction.

    • @taxi_cab
      @taxi_cab หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@PaperandMoose Yah, the auction method can be advantageous for both buying and selling, and I understand your point about the unique aspects of certain pieces. For sellers, especially in situations where a traditional estate sale might be challenging, an auction provides a platform where the items' values can be determined by competitive bidding. This often leads to higher prices for unique or rare items that might be undervalued with a fixed price. For buyers, auctions offer the opportunity to acquire distinctive pieces that may not be readily available elsewhere, often at a price they are willing to pay, which reflects the true market value.
