    You have such a good attitude about auctions. I think you got some good stuff.

  • @stephenritz5581

    Your attitude of gratitude is more valuable than any inflated auction bid. My sense is that you alway go home pretty happy / content while others may stew over what they lost - or how much they had to pay to win. Seems like there are friends / fellow travelers, then adversaries / competitors, then some downright unpleasant folks. I think collecting, in particular, attracts a some people with obsessions or compulsions, so they may be dealing with a whole different set of variables (I know first-hand of what I speak!). Glad you grabbed some cool stuff even if it wasn't the "top of the pyramid stuff." In almost 40 years of collecting and a little reselling, I don't think I've ever missed out on something that I didn't find more inexpensively later (of course I obsessively trawl everything online and at local sales). Well, maybe there are half a dozen things I have really shelled out for. I think your discipline about this stuff, especially for resale, will continue to ensure your success. Congratulations on a good day - in what you bought and what you didn't buy. Hope you have an excellent Thursday and good weather for The weekend flea markets!.

      There are times, mostly the day after an auction, where I sometimes think to myself that I should have bid a few more times on certain items. I think the majority of regrets comes from viewers telling me what something is/what it's worth when they watch the video, and I had no clue when filming at the auction, flea market, or estate sale. (Those comments help me to learn & hopefully remember what something is if I see it again!) It's funny how some people despise eBay due to everyone being able to look up everything & then when you don't use eBay/internet to look something up, you are hated for that. Double-edged sword! As you said, many times we find the exact or similar item later and are able to buy it for an even better price. I never know what the Tote Man might bring to the flea market, but perhaps it is something that I didn't win at the auction. Same with an estate sale... open that box in the basement & it's exactly what you have been looking for. Beautiful weather expected this weekend, we will see how the market turns out. Kids go back to school next week in this area, so perhaps some mini vacations, back-to-school shopping, and sleeping in before school starts. Hoping for the best! Hope that you have had a good week!

    Was a lot of nice things there, going for a nice sum of cash. Glad you got some deals. I remember one time at an auction, I was bidding on something, an unknown to me, my dad, across the room, was bidding on it as well. The auctioneer knew us both and just kept smiling while taking our bids. Dad stopped and I got it, well at least it was a charity auction and went to a good cause 🤣. 👍👍

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Oh boy, at least one of you got it! Sometimes relatives/couples end up bidding on the same thing but the auctioneers know they are together so they joke about bidding the other up. (That’s for those that attend the auctions for a few years, at a new auctioneer it probably wouldn’t happen in my area.)

    I could understand people getting into bidding wars, and even feelings of resentment when you lose an auction item, but YOU always seem happy with your purchases at the end of each video.
    I always got the impression that you use good common sense with how much you spent on all your items. There's alot to be said for not being selfish, and obsessing with getting everything you want! A wiser man knows when to walk away and go home with some of his hard-earned money still in his pocket! Patience is a virtue!
    Look at it this way...the money you didn't spend today, is money you can now have for your next trip to Yellowstone!

    I can’t comment on auctions as I don’t go to many, but I have seen sneaky tactics on the market. The other week a trader on the stall next to our’s had a vintage toy train (Tri-ang Express) for sale, a punter came along and spotted it and agreed to buy it for £25 but didn’t have the cash on him and asked the trader to put it back for him and he would be back soon with the cash. No problem said the trader. Well after two hours the punter hadn’t been back, so the trader was getting a little miffed by this as a fair bit of attention had been shown towards this item beforehand. So I said to the trader, I’m going for a little walk, so I strolled up to the other end of the market and lo and behold, I spotted ‘the punter’ on a market stall and what was on his stall? Only the exact same model of train as my neighbour had but he was asking £45 for his one. So I nipped back to tell my trader neighbour to forget the sale. ‘The punter’ was simply pretending to be interested to buy the train to put the sale of that one on hold to give him time to sell his!

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I’ve been going to auctions since I was a kid and try not to take it personal people bidding against me, well I try not to.
    Years ago I sold something on eBay and the buyer asked me if I ever go to this weekly auction which was down the road from me. I answered honestly yes
    Next week he shows up, very friendly guy but he bid on everything I wanted. Was impossible to work any deals out with him either.
    Then He started coming every week and it really was costing me money , I even had friends bid on the stuff so he wouldn’t know it was me but didn’t make any difference, was no stopping him
    This goes on for a few weeks and then he comes up to me and tells me he won’t be there next week because he is going in the hospital for kidney surgery but he will be there the week after.
    Never saw him again
    Had some guys ask me what ever happened to that fellow that bid against me and bought all those tools?

(The only time I"ve seen her smile at me was when she beat me to something she knew I buy, and it wasn't a nice smile. Not at all.) I know where she lives, hit her tag sale by mistake once, and do my best to go to places she doesn't. No auctions in person here for her to mess with. Yeah, I noticed the old (metal) Tonka trucks. I had a collection of them, in perfect condition, from my childhood. They were up in the attic, still in their original boxes(!), and my Mom sold them in a garage sale while I was away at school. The only one she didn't sell was the 'ALLIED' moving van. It had her $2 (!!!) price sticker still on the (original) box. Out of curiosity, I took it to a store that sells old toys, in Scotch Plains, NJ, to research it's value. Easily over $100! I ended up selling it on eBay for over $150! It's a good thing my Mom wasn't able to sell it for her $2 asking price! But she did manage to sell about 8 or 10 others for $2 each. Ugggh!
      Thanks, Mom!

      You are right concerning the “shill” bidding. I’ve been to auctions where auctioneers “pretend” to have a bid - they look to a different section of the bidders - so that the bid is raised. I do not attend those auctions anymore. This happens often in online auctions as well, with shill bidding where someone is artificially bidding to get an actual bidder to continue to raise their bid. Word gets around about this, so I don’t bid on those online auctions either.

    Sometimes it's just strategy. You bid someone up at an auction like this, hoping you'll make them reach their overall limit. The goal is to reach the bottom of their pocket with lots of stuff left. Sometimes it works.

      @@PaperandMoose I always think that if someone gets to something before me, I just think, well, they needed it more than I did. Rice doesn't always work for certain smells. Sometimes basic catbox litter is better. (putting my biochem and chemistry hat on for a second) Sometimes baking soda works well, too. But rice isn't very reactive.

    Most of the auctions in my area are online. I miss the in person estate auctions. I have this problem at estate sales. The dealers don’t care for me because I grab things they want, it’s funny because I’m a customer at their shops. They must have a love hate relationship with me. I love finding things for my home and friends.

    Were it me in a situation such as this... I'd choose the ONE thing i wanted above all else, that I knew i didnt want to leave without, and id just bid until i won it (of course, if it's for your personal collection). If it's for resale you have to think of what the market will bear... yes.

    I wouldn´t call other bidders "enemies", for me most of them are just "competitors". And: there are possibilities to get into gentlemen´s agreements before starting wild bidding wars. "Okay, you can get this lot, if you leave the other one to me". That´s the way it works, Renée. Not always, but sometimes, especially if you know about the special interests of other competitors. Besides that, great show, thanks for taking us along ! I like the very relaxed auctioneer´s style, highly appreciated. And you got some pretty neat items, not in pristine condition, but what can you expect on books used by little children ?! I would love to know the titles and years of these old German books. Keep it up, have a fantastic Thursday afternoon, and see you on the next one ! Greets from GER, U.

      Oh people definitely have enemies at these auctions! I don’t have any, that I know of, but I just observe & know who bids on what & what to expect for prices. At an auction like this with quality items, I’m not expecting $1 prices, but one does have to draw the line between what you are spending versus the profit you will make, if buying to resell. I’ll take a look at the German books, I’m busy sorting the brochures now. Good news - there’s a whole folder dedicated to Wyoming with some Yellowstone in there 🙂
