Wow, that's a pretty neat setup. I especially like that switching mechanism, so simple it's elegant. A rough looking unfinished kind of elegant only certain people can truly appreciate, reminds me of the ole saying "There's nothing more permanent than a temporary solution that works."

I'd prefer full width, completely covering stair. I suppose it would need to be sturdy enough to walk down in case of power failure. I'm wondering whether altering the stairs at all would violate code? Excellent video, I've need wanting to install an escalator forever.

The hoist motor was a Harbor Freight 1300 lb hoist using 2 lines but I only used one which put it at 650. Look at my other 2 on youtube under BLANNING. the $250 elevator escalator used 2 lines and did fine at 440 lbs.

@@billblanning2068 Would the rail part be safe in wet weather and using in the rain? It’s just using a hoist with wire cable right? So as long as the motor is safe? But what about wet cable? Should I build an overhang to prevent as much rain as I can from getting to it? Can this be built to any steepness? Is it dependent on being built on stairs or can it be built on a slope, let’s say along the side of a stilted carport?
@@TheSoulAlignmentCoach lYes steepness doesn't matter. You might use Superstrut (Home depot electric area) to center it and certainly not need stairs except you might get stuck without them if it failed.. I found wheels with a V on thrm that could be used on superstrut but I can't remember where
Your invention is extraordinary, and it can help many people who have problems with their knees, feet, etc.; can you sell me one? I need it for my sister, she lives in Cancun, she has knee problems.
I'd worry about how safe it would be once you get a bit older and balance and mobility become more of a problem - the time when you need it the most...
It is exactly like walking up the stairs .. you use the bannister for stability and there is no problem, plus the safety line on the side quickly stops it ... if needed.

I used to climb the stairs over riding in an elevator all the time until Fibromyalgia entered my life and changed everything. Some days, I can climb 20 steps without a problem, most times however, two steps are problematic. I used to love to hike, play tennis, walk 5 to 10 miles a day, swim and all kinds of things. Now, those things are sad to even remember. Don't get me wrong, I'm not feeling sorry for myself and don't want anyone else to feel bad for me either. Even with all this, I'm still better off than others. I count my blessings all the time. Not everyone can enjoy the climb of the stairs for many different and very real reasons, which makes the need for stair lifts real.

Would it work outside, going up a simple 5 steps to a deck, especially in the NorthEast in the winters?

Yes, I think it would be the same but need a cover over the motor ....perhaps removable at the top of the stairs.

Your right, but the motor overheating if used more than a few times in a row means it would have to be done carefully. Certainly woth a try.
