It's a very different movie, you have to let it sink in and process it. Mostly because the setup takes about 85% of the film, and then it goes straight into conflict and resolution almost at the same time. But if the purpose of cinema is to give the viewer strong emotions, I'd say Chronicle does that well. It's unsettling, and even the action scenes make me more anxious than excited. I'm worried about the safety of the protagonists, the antagonists, and the bystanders the whole time. That's so unusual in a movie, and I think that gives it a grounding in reality that most movies fail at.
@@DannyTanimoto If that was being “open” then I would hate to see closed. The whole movie he was just judging the hell out of it. Holden would have to keep changing his perspective by explaining basic things like “character development” and every plot and story dosent have to be so obvious.
So the writer of this film explained what the structure they found in the cave was during a panel at some convention. It was apparently an endangered prehistoric organism native to Earth, that has the ability to manipulate things electromagnetically. This is how it moves around since it's essentially just a living rock. When the boys found it, it was dying and had burrowed closer to the surface of the Earth, creating the tunnel. When Steve interacted with it, it saw him as a food source and tried to eat them (Steve's sweat being pulled toward it), but died during the process, transferring its powers to them. The writer had a trilogy planned where another prehistoric rock that was responsible for injuring the one we see in this movie telepathically enslaves and controls hordes of humans, turning them into telekinetic mindless drones with it as their queen.

Yeah my problem is when I'm writing books, I take the time to explain everything. I make too much exposition and the movie shows me how much I need to tone it down.
That and if the creators really had a trilogy in mind, then maybe they counted it on being a success too much and just assumed they’d have two other movies to fill in the blanks
Fun fact: Director Josh Trank made Dane DeHaan, Michael B. Jordan, and Alex Russell live in a house together for fifteen days, in order to create a genuine bond between the three actors. The movie was also supposed to be a lot more darker but they didn’t want to make it R rated due to loss of audiences and budgetary reasons.
Hi i, a south african and a huge fan of the series since the my friend watches days. Nice too see Matt's reactions again. Fun fact, Chronicle was shot in Cape Town and I live 5 minutes away from the Mall where some of the shots were filmed. Awesome choice and awesome movie

Andrew had one of the most reasonable crash outs imo. If people did get superpowers this is how realistic it would be, that's what makes it such a great movie. This movie is a 9/10 for me.
I remember watching this movie in the theaters and felt very captivated by the premise and how realistic the events panned out. Its exactly like my imagination as a kid with superpowers with my friends would be just minus the dark murder. Of all the handheld pov style movies this is my favorite by far, the acting was pretty spot on
Holden, I think you explaining how shots are made and stuff like that is really effecting Matt's ability to enjoy movies. Because now Matt is just trying to understand why a director would chose to do things a certain way instead of just enjoying the movie. Him looking for the why is making him miss the impact.
Interestingly, Andrew's father was suppose to die in the original script for this film. The whole scene with Andrew pulling apart that spider was suppose to foreshadow what Andrew was going to do with his own father.
I haven’t seen the video yet, but I just to express my thoughts and feelings quick if you don’t mind. CHRONICLE IS THE BEST FOUND FOOTAGE MOVIE EVER! I SAW THIS IN THE THEATERS AND I BOUGHT IT ON BLU RAY AFTER IT WAS RELEASED IN THAT FORMAT AFTER 4 MONTHS! THIS WILL ALWAYS BE A TOP 20 MOVIE TO ME, DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS
Fun fact: there was going to be a sequel to this movie continuing with Matt almost like a pseudo Superhero, but the movie was gonna be in the perspective of someone wanting to be a villain to Matt's character. The script is actually online and you can read it. they do go into detail (if I recall correctly) about the alien powers in what it's all about. Anyway, what's very interesting is that when the writer presented his story to the studio, they didn't want that. They just wanted another copy and paste of this movie. So they fired him, and they turned chronicle into the what we now know as the 2017 power rangers movie ( go back and watch that movie. They get their power rangers abilities the exact same way that these characters do in this movie)
That wasn't the specific script for the next movie. It was only one of the many they had considered for the sequel. A lot of franchise movies have many scripts they consider for different directions they could potentially lead the franchise in depending on reception. There was another possible storyline we heard from the director that there was another Super Rock that creating a Hive Mind and turning people into Telepathic/Telekinetic zombies. I believe it was the same script where the story was gonna follow a girl friend group instead.
@SubzeroBlack68 very true, but I personally only consider the one written by Max Landis (the original writer) as the legit one, seeing how there were so many others not written by him. Dude was legit passionate with what he wanted to do with it. Shame it never came about
Once I saw this and noticed the similarities, I see this as the live action adaptation. It seems like this maybe the closest we get to it. There have been rumors and attempts for YEARS but nothing has happened so far.
This movie is the definition of show don't tell. They tell you so much just from visuals. Steve was the strongest because he was closest to the crystal then Andrew was the second closest so second strongest so he had to kill Steve to be the Apex Predator. Love show don't tell movies. It's why Amazing Spider-Man is my favorite Spider-Man movie
I totally get how Matt feels about this movie, I felt the same way the first time I watched it but it’s one of those movies that gets better on the rewatch especially when you know what’s coming and you get to see all the foreshadowing in the beginning.
That final moment of andrew screaming like an animal and everything just shaking seems almost real to me. I know its cgi but the actors perfomance really feels like hes straining every atom in his body
There’s another movie called End of Watch which is sorta found footage. The character does film throughout the movie but other times it’s filmed as a movie would normally but still framed as it’s found footage. It’s a nice movie
I find this film to be about how people with different walks of life act when they are given power and why some people just shouldn't be given power. When you look at michael B jordan's character, he is someone who already had all the attention, women, and success he could ask for, and thus when given the power he simply used to mess around and go with the flow. then you have andrew who had a shitty living environment, a dying mother, and had almost no friends, thus when he had the power and stuff hit the fan for him, he used the power in a horrible light. Then you had the third kid (forgot his name) who had his morals in line and was the average/slightly popular jo who still tried to keep his morals in check after his obtain his superpowers with some slight hiccups that you can see throughout the film.
Yeah you can do those 3D renders now at home but remember this was 2012. At the time for example Renderman was a BIG deal and most people only had things like MentalRay or other much lower end renderers, camera tracking at home wasnt as easy as it is today, etc.

Matt, the plot is basically "what if three teenagers basically became like gods". Honestly Matts most profound film experience and take in the many years I’ve been watching. Been here for years and watching Matt finally get the true film experience of feeling the way he did is honestly beautiful. Movies are supposed to make you feel certain ways and shockingly out of everything so far it was chronicle 😭. Love this for Matt and i truly admire this take, happy to see him appearing so much again. You guys need to make a letterboxd!!!
One of the reasons the film Chronicle still had a $15 million dollar budget is because they saved money by filming in South Africa, BUT... they had to import American cars and other American environmental pieces to make it appear as if it was set in America.
The writer cited Akira, The Fury, and Akira as inspiration for the original screenplay. The Director who had no idea about Akira used his own vision for the film to create something unique. But yes there are some origins that come from Akira in this film.
@@SubzeroBlack68 I was gonna say, it _has_ to be directly inspired. It feels like a mix between Akira and Elfen Lied (specifically that hospital scene, minus the titties) to me.
You should rename this series “My Friend Hate Watches” because that’s what he does... Honestly, if you didn’t act like you could do a better job every time you watch a movie more people might watch your fitness channel. Because no one wants to support someone who constantly tears other people stuff apart.
I remember seeing a theory a while back that the glowing rock that gave them their powers is from planet zero (the negative zone) from fant4stic. Both are directed by Josh Trank. It probably wasn’t the intention but it’s kinda fun to pretend they could be in the same universe
Big fan of this movie as well as yours and Matt’s reaction videos. This one made me think of 2 others that’ll confuse Matt that we all love. Project almanac and brightburn. You should put those on the list!
This is my favorite movie and Matt's reaction might ACTUALLY make me angry this time. It's the perfect reflection of the male power fantasy and somehow also has probably the most accurate example of an outcast going down the incel/ *chool *hooter pipeline.
I really enjoy watching you two guys to respect each other opinions and Holden not trying to push Matt to like the movie. And it’s funny how this movie looks to someone who not used to genre
I think you should relegate this guys movie experiences to Marvel, he lacks a basic understanding of subtlety. I've never been waterboarded, but I can only imagine it's comparable to watching a movie with this guy.
Really appreciate you guys doing this movie: im surprised how limited the reactions are for this movie. What i really like about this movie is both the alt take on a found footage film (similar to district 9 that starts with footage then becomes more cinematic shots) and the take on what "superhero abilities) might look like in a real world scenario IRL, the people who get powers wouldnt always have a great moral compass, and most would either be scared of being found out, or use it *improperly by hero standards* as a mean to subvert their own trauma. I think Holden hit on a few good points about how this is filmed and written from the POV of the cameras, though i would agree that the story is a little ham-fisted and could also use a bit more refinement. Overall a great movie, and i hope it allows Matt to look at filmaking in a new way going forward. Keep.uo the great work with the channel!
if the movie makes you think, that is good, even if you do not know how you feel about it. It means you let it sit with you a few days Matt, let it process around your brain.
I really love this movie and the expansion on what happens when 3 different teenagers get superpowers. Matt (a lazy kid that likes philosophy) wants to use his powers to help people. Steve (a motivated and disciplined probably valedictorian) wants to have all the fun in the world. And Andrew (a tortured and abused loner) snaps and wants to use his abilities to hurt his tormentors. It's so much fun and gave me that WANT to have telekinesis. I want to fly. I would have all the fun... Honestly there is a cool cw show called The Tomorrow People about people that are born with a set of powers (Telekinesis, Teleportation, and Telepathy). Its a standard cw show but i think it also does a good job at philosophy and expanding what happens when people get powers. I recommend it. Its a fun show

So I just wanted to cheer up Matt that I really appreciate his sincerity even if he knows his opinion will be unpopular and I hope we will see him more often on the channel again. Thanks for your work.
PS.: Sorry for my english I am from Czech Republic.
Guys, i think we're starting to get to Matt, he just may become a film dork yet.😂
Holden telling his audience to subscribe 6:00 When I say subscribe you subscribe. Finish watching this video.
"What the hell was that" Lmaooo matt is my favorite. Legit love seeing him so much recently
You all need to watch Brightburn
"Why is it called 'Chronicle'?" Because, it's a movie that chronicles the troubled kids decent into corruption after getting power.
So before holden did Matt know what a TV was?
Can u guys please please react to Don't look up. It's highly underrated and you'll love the story especially after how the recent election went 👌🏾🔥
Can Matt list some movies he does like
6.5
You gotta make Matt watch some slice of life stuff just to break his mind lmao.
I love ya channel Matt makes it difficult to just get through his nonchalant viewing style
Watch the blade video with Matt. He was loving it and a lot of laughs

@@bobbyjustice34 touché. Promise it ain’t intentional
One of the reasons the film Chronicle still had a $15 million dollar budget is because they saved money by filming in South Africa, BUT... they had to import American cars and other American environmental pieces to make it appear as if it was set in America.
At the end Andrew always reminds me of Tetsuo Shima from Akira
No offense Holden, but I think Matt might be more philosophical lmao
I love this movie !!
So cool. Liquid Nitrogen. GEOGRAPHY?!
matt tried to figure out a movie the whole time and when he cant hes confused leading him to feel like he didnt enjoy the movies
22:16 Currently he is also in Special Ops: Lioness.
I remember seeing a theory a while back that the glowing rock that gave them their powers is from planet zero (the negative zone) from fant4stic. Both are directed by Josh Trank. It probably wasn’t the intention but it’s kinda fun to pretend they could be in the same universe
This has been one of my top 3 movies of all time ever since I watched it
Big fan of this movie as well as yours and Matt’s reaction videos.
42:34 Well then…let’s put him to watch Paranormal Activity 😂
Oh my! What a treasure you watching today!
Matt doesn't realize the gold that he is watching lol
Insanely excited for this.
I think you should relegate this guys movie experiences to Marvel, he lacks a basic understanding of subtlety.
I've never been waterboarded, but I can only imagine it's comparable to watching a movie with this guy.
If Matt has not seen Momento yet. Show him that one next. See if we can really break his brain.
Never been more excited
Same
Getting this dude to like a movie is like trying to trying to get a cat to like getting wet
If nothing else, you can always count on Matt to be honest lol.
@@DayyHughes always
Really appreciate you guys doing this movie: im surprised how limited the reactions are for this movie.
What i really like about this movie is both the alt take on a found footage film (similar to district 9 that starts with footage then becomes more cinematic shots) and the take on what "superhero abilities) might look like in a real world scenario
IRL, the people who get powers wouldnt always have a great moral compass, and most would either be scared of being found out, or use it *improperly by hero standards* as a mean to subvert their own trauma.
41:18 is gold
I can't find anyone who dislikes this movie.
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!.... ALL MY FAVORITE REACTORS ARE REACTING TO ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES... I'M LOVING THIS
You should have him watch Ready or Not, Abigail, 28 days and weeks later. Also the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy.
if the movie makes you think, that is good, even if you do not know how you feel about it.
Its a fun show
Btw i accidentally commented this on a totally unrelated short
Ready for the project x reaction
