Nowadays, being a not-so-skilled artist is kind of a blessing because it prevents me from being accused of "stealing" using AI-generated art. When you are too pro, people start doubting your skill due to the existence of AI-generated art.

I think there's a difference in tracing art, versus tracing references. I'm an artist but I refuse to trace someone's artwork, but I trace models and other references for my work. I am a printmaker so I combine multiple things together to create a unique piece and tracing helps me do it quicker. I took multiple drawing classes so I can draw and not all elements are traced. Just my thoughts :)

@@sotbarbapappa samdoesart does it all the time tho, i have found several pictures he used as references for his own art. I think doing studies of photos is completely fine, using references isn’t a crime because it actually helps you learn a LOT faster! Many artists start out by tracing artwork they like or trying to replicate it the best they can, its just another way of learning. Im not saying its ok to trace art and claim it as your own, but this is how pretty much every artist out there started, by copying what they like. I do think copying the lighting off someone’s photo is fine, i also think that you dont have to have consent from the photographer for every single study of a picture that you do, its just unrealistic. I also think that using models as reference without consent is fine, thats how artists learn in the first place. How do you think professional artists learn how to draw anatomy in all kinds of crazy poses? By copying references! Not all of us artists are built like those Greek statues and we cannot (unfortunately) shapeshift into different body types and people so that we can take a picture and copy off that. Using references is fine and *necessary* if you want to learn!

    • @zh_bd
      @zh_bd ปีที่แล้ว +56

@@sotbarbapappa there are SO many kinds of people that its impossible to be able to personally ask every single person we see and decide to draw whether we can actually draw them. If you want to learn how to draw dark skin, find a picture of someone with dark skin and draw them! This applies to everyyything, body types, hair types, skin tones, face structures… we copy what we see, memorize, then rinse and repeat until it is added to our visual library (the absolute same thing goes for lighting!). So dont be scared of using references, photo studies are probably the most common way of learning how to draw all kinds of stuff :)

@@munchmongoosethey mean that they trace poses from other models, not from artworks. For example instead of tracing a whole drawing that someone owns they search for a pose reference and then trace the model. They could've said it was a study. Studies are a thing, you copy something to better understand shapes, poses, colours, whatever it is you liked in the original. But there's a lot of mysticism in some areas of the art community: the idea of the muse-inspired artist that kind of gets better and better by their own genius instead of by studying. They have to keep their appearances (and their egos). Thankfully, we can all learn from these experiences and be better people and artists. 😊

to be fair it can be really scary on the internet when being called a 'tracer' not everyone is understanding and accepting of it? people will send literal death threats. Its like rolling the dice for whether or not people will hate you or not. Some people will jump on the word 'tracing' and immediately assume your entire gallery is not yours and you steal art.
While I personally would disclose my method and accept whatever comes from it, some people are genuinely scared of losing their job, their income, their home, the food on their table from bad press and being sat next to the word 'tracing'
some people want to use a different word like 'referencing' as a cover up since its greatly frowned upon.
Some artists don't even like to admit they use references because of the huge negative connection to tracing. Some people think its cheating to use references.

There's nothing wrong with tracing. It helps to understand anatomy, poses, shapes, etc.and general practicing. If it's heavily traced I usually don't post it to social media since it's for personal practice

Artists not being dramatic? Are you kidding me? Artists are the most dramatic people I know, and I say that as one. Because while we're quiet and usually non confrontational, we'll return home and proceed to create the saddest character with the most traumatic background ever: abandoned by their parents and raised by a sweet, kind wolf, who was then brutally murdered by a mad man and Mc lost an eye and 3 toes trying to get revenge, but eventually dies tragically. And if the character happens to resemble the very person who pissed off the artist? Coincidence ofc.

I kinda feel for this artist. When I was young and at the point that most people probably learn their artistic skills, I got really into a small community where you'd take the same line art and color/edit and add things to it. So I got really good at color theory, patterns, and editing on a base (copying shading styles etc). Still, to this day, I cannot just draw out a scene or person. But god damn can I color some pre-made art. I can't help but wonder if this person got stuck in a similar cycle, where their color work has outpaced their actual drawing ability and so they ended up tracing others' base work.

I think using tracing as a tool can really help when creating artworks. Actually, many traditional artists have been using tracing in their creative process for a long time, going way back to the 15th century with the use of camera obscura. It helps them make their drawings accurate and on point. So, the real deal is not about tracing itself, but what you're tracing and where it comes from. 'Cause it could totally be a copyright issue, especially when it comes to AI-generated art. The whole copyright situation for AI art is still kinda fuzzy, which is why tracing AI-generated art can easily get some serious hate and backlash.

Taking from something exploitative can be refreshing but in the end, you're also piggyback off of this exploitation by out right tracing it. Tho imo I don't mind if it's to learn but this artist clearly wants to pass it off as they own hard earned skill and artwork before they were ousted so their image and attitude about it is not a good look.

Technically they are in their full right to trace AI art since AI art cannot be copyrighted or owned or whatever. If you do not believe me, search it up. The only parts of an ai art that can be owned art parts that were drawn by an actual person. And since you can’t, well, only in some rare instances, trace the images that make up an ai artwork back to the original artists works that made up the ai artwork (not sure if that made sense). You would never know. So this person who traced the AI, that art is legally theirs actually. They should have said they traced at least though instead of lying.
May be a controversial opinion, but personally, I don’t have a problem with this. AI art is ridiculous. It can put real artists out of their job, which is really sad. I personally am an artist. I don’t touch AI art, because I don’t want to support it. I also don’t trace because I don’t want to get accused of it like this person did. That stuff worries me though. But what I mean is that this ai art is getting so advanced you can say stuff like, “a pretty girl in a sitting post in [an artists style]” and it will draw it in that artist’s style. Which means if that artist has commissions, people could just ask ai art and they wouldn’t get as many commissions. Which of course can lower their earnings. That’s just an example though.

Or the AI stole their work that is how AI gets their art style by Stealing From Artists. I hope nothing like this ever happens to me. That’s why I’m so scared to post my work on the Internet. 😂 Also tracing the outline of a model is not going to create that beautiful picture at the end. The person is still a great artist. I’m personally not a tracer but I don’t think that makes their art inferior to people who decide not to trace the outline of a model. What makes the painting is the hours of rendering to takes to make something realistic and stylistic at the same time at least that’s my opinion.

I'd even say go for it, trace AI art, BUUUUT be up front about it. When I trace it's obvious cause I'm experimenting and the proportions are suddenly more realistic. However, while I don't think an artist should get flamed for tracing AI art a lot, if they don't improve because of it, it's on them.

Actually, I agree for the most part about being "chill" but probably moreso outwardly, and how I am probably perceived by other people. But inside, oh man, the mental battles inside, the feelings! They come out in the drawings, right? That's what makes artists so passionate anyway. We seem chill on the outside, but inside, we are so full of drama. Maybe not our own life, but perception and reality. Anyway, I just stumbled on this video today, love the humor, and your commentary. You have so much charisma! Love it!

    Just out of curiosity.
What would you say if a person created a 3D model, even go as far as sculpting the model, in Blender/Zbrush, setting up a camera shot, taking a render and then bringing that render into Krita/Photoshop in order to trace it and use it for your art/comic/commission/whatever.
How would you compare that type of tracing vs tracing photos, especially ones you didn't take? And also without disclosing it.

Funny, when I finally got my ass and got into an art school instead of self-learning, surprise surprise the first thing the teacher taught us was to ....TRACE! Yes we were all shocked and it took multiple scolding until we got into the habit of finding / taking good references to trace from. So Yup, I'm always confused on whether its pragmatic or shamful to trace.
I feel for the poor artist, Yes some of them art shown are almost step by step with change in character/color scheme.
But Let's be honest here, if someone didn't intentionally want to make his life hard on purpose no one would have batted an eye at the similarities even when they are there next to each other. It's public speech here at work and not a fault of the artist for drawing / copying / referencing / tracing an art, especially an AI one!
You are right, it IS a PR incident
like AI art is already copywrite nightmare, and no Real Human Artists are getting neither their due credit from AI, nor being harmed when someone traces or even 'steals' from an AI generated art.
otherwise people and artist, refer back to original to avoid being with hunted with pitch forks like this poor dude
let THAT be the lesson learned

4:04 She says it's frowned upon to trace...as an artist of 35 years I would sorely have to disagree. Lots of professional artists trace pictures (for realism) and most of the time their own sketches. Now, we need to let the general audience know a simple fact...drawing or painting your piece in one sitting, straight up with no reference and no mistakes is not a feasible technique. Kim Jung Gi is one of the few that operate like this but it is not common. Most, if not ALL artists, trace. It's a part of the building process: Loose sketch, tighten up the shapes, find placement for a more pleasing composition, etc.
There is no inherent shame that comes with tracing in the artist world because all the greats did it. What IS frowned upon is the lying/denial of having to trace.
I do both, trace and original art, and both hold equal quality. If someone thinks my tracing is a way of "cheating", I then show them my original art in pencil and that reveals to them that I DO know how to draw. It's not just about "drawing" a piece but more like "creating" a piece using a slow, repetitive process that lets them slowly control and refine the final piece. If the artist is lying about tracing, then it means that they are either insecure of their skill set or they literally have no skill set.
In the comic book art world, inkers get crapped on all the time for 'tracing" over someone else's pencils without realizing how much work, technique and knowledge goes into using the proper tools to get that professional look.
So basically, not everyone who traces can draw. Digital or not, it still takes a wealth of knowledge (Lighting, shading, color theory, line work, etc.) to even create just a decent mediocre piece. If someone is a "good tracer", there's a likely possibility that person already has the skills. It's the terrible tracers that are easy to spot.
Be confident in your creations, no matter what process you use. Let the final piece speak for itself.
All in all, I love the video!

One thing I've always wondered about is where is the line drawn between we humans using visual information we've gathered from our perceptions as reference when creating original art, and an AI/diffuser using visual information it's gathered from its perceptions as reference when creating original art? People look at each other's art all the time for reference/inspiration; we are, in essence, using others' art to create our own. Never seen anyone bring it up, but it seems like such an obvious thing. Then again, I don't engage with public forums much, so I may have missed that part of the debate.

Personally I'm okay with trasing. The only problem I have with it is when they trace another drawing and then sell that traced image.
Personally I trace fairly often, but I make sure it's always from real like photos, never someone else's drawings. And even then I do still change elements like clothes or hair style on top of already the basic changes like colour, lighting, line art style, etc. And I always credit the original photo if I know where it came from. If I don't I say where I found the photo (ex. if I found it on pinterest I'd say who posted it on pinterest)
If you're tracing someone else's drawing and not selling your traced version then I'm okay with it, because it's such a huge learning help. I remember when I just started out drawing I would spend hours tracing and trying my best to copy league of legends photos because their anatomy, poses, and perspectives are great. Personally I think its okay to show these photos even when you trace from other art, but you should disclose that you traced it. If you don't then yeah I can see why people dislike it so muxh
