Thanks for the video. I just did this project today on my 2008 with 252,000 miles on it. They factory speakers in the front finally went. the directions worked pretty well...Note that I did not have to disconnect the door handle on my 2008 G6. Instead, I twisted it, pulled it back through, and supported the panel on a milk crate while I changed out the front speakers. One thing of note, that little rivet you have to push in and pull out on the panel itself is VERY important to fitting the panel back. Be careful with it! Also, be very sure that when you put the panel back on, 1) all of the foam pieces stay in the panel, and 2) you set the panel in the sill first....I had problems with the driver's door. I also had problems with some of the panel rivets, thanks to GM's finest smashing them years ago. Door panel still fits pretty well. If you're watching this video to replace the front speakers, I thought they rushed through the wiring part. Disconnecting the wiring is easy for everything but the speaker itself. Use a flat screwdriver to remove that. Push it right down into the connector and pry it back up slowly....Kind of dig it out towards you. Be careful with this, you do NOT want to break that connector (or any others)!!! Don't worry, the wiring part is easy as hell. Metra makes a bracket to connect speakers to replace the bracket that connects to the speaker and the door panel. Use that brand not scosch. Also, Metra makes a wiring harness adapter. (Bracket: Metra 82-3006 6" to 6-3/4" Speaker Adapter for GM Multi 05-Up......Wiring adapter: Metra 72-4568 Speaker Harness for Selected General Motor Vehicles)....The wiring adapter is highly recommended. I'm no wiring expert, so these things make it simple and better than trying to figure out what wires to cut...Crutchfield told me there was no wiring adapter. I bought mine at Best Buy in Brighton, MI.... Last, the speakers to replace are 6.5's in the front. Use nothing else!!! Don't get cute and upgrade to a 6.75"...The brackets are pretty specific, and you don't want to mess around for .25". I replaced the factory speakers with Kicker 43CSC654 6-1/2" 2-way car speakers from Best Buy....They sound pretty nice with the factory stereo. They are 4 ohm, and can handle an amp if you ever upgrade. What I wish I would have done, was replaced the tweeters that are up in the little triangle piece on our G6. They are garbage. You can buy a kit of "components" that give you the 2 door speakers, and 2 tweeters....I think Metra makes a wiring adapter for the tweeters too. Another thing I did was take the foam rubber gasket off of the original speaker brackets....You need something like this to keep them "stuck" to the door panel and to eliminate vibration...I tried installing these without, and the speakers vibrated.... I watched the videos for doing the back speakers......Not looking forward to that, so they'd better make it a few more years!
Your video saved me so much time and frustration. The Pontiac g6 was not made to be fixed for some reason. My machanic hates it when I bring this car into his shop. A simple job requires taking the car apart and repurposing old parts. It's terrible.
Yep. Radiator required disassembling entire front of the car, and while it was so opened up went ahead and replaced the failed oil filter adapter gasket.
Great vid! I just replaced all 4 Speakers in 06 G6 . The left rear didn’t work at all and the fronts were both blown . The idea for modifying the old front speakers was genius! Worked perfectly! Thanks for sharing. It took me about 4 hours to complete the whole job.
So I followed the guide and replaced my wifes. I didn't buy nice polks but the generic offbrand speakers I got are still better then the blown tin cans that were in it. Thanks for the video brother.
Thanks so much! Did this on my Aura, the doors are slightly different but the speakers are identical. I ordered new frames and they didn't fit the speaker or the door. I used your idea of cutting out the speaker. I didn't trim the lip around the edge and the speaker fit perfectly in the door. Drilled two pilot holes, secured it and put it back together. I bought cheap Kenwoods as replacements and I found they fit fine like this. Not having speakers work is maddening. I appreciate your sharing these tips.
Came across this while looking up gm amps. What most people don't understand is that foam and speaker mount serves a purpose in the acoustics from the speaker. Second each speaker is independently driven from the amp at 2ohms. common replacements are 4ohms which means half the power/sound of the original. Third it is a pain in the butt but gm wired each independent speaker as its own for frequency. So basically if you replaced the 2ohms with 4 ohms your truly only getting half the sound and response.
Thanks man! I got a monsoon speaker system in my g6 and the same speaker went out, but i got 3 speakers on 1 door. I bet when i replace my 2 bigger ones, its gonna sound SWEET! I love my car.
Thanks for the video. My son's g6 blew out the front speakers. I really appreciate you showing the how to video. It will help us in our replacement project.
J Furey Glad it worked for ya. My Polks are still going strong in my Pontiac, it’s my daily driver any needless to say my speakers get plenty of use with no rattle at all.
Just picked up the same speakers for $30 on 5mile app, watched your video and went about the same method. Thank you, sounds good. Now to tackle those 6x9s...
Thanks, I watched this before I installed a set of MTX speakers. Followed almost exactly what you did. Y speakers were a bit smaller so I didn't have to remove the lip, but it worked out perfectly. A little solder and it was perfect.
When I changed the front speakers in my 08 G6, the driver side speaker housing was different with 4 screws holding the speaker in it. So I was able to easily change it as it was a direct fit with my new one. The passenger side however, the housing and speaker were one so I had to modify. I took some shears and just cut around it then forced screws into the plastic. Worked out quite well.
You were a huge help when it came to which wires were positive and negative. Just did the driver side today doing passenger side tomorrow thanks for the help

How did you wire it? I noticed there's a harness that doesn't fit the new speaker. Do you just cut it off? If so what do you do with the four wires when the new speaker only needs 2?
After some minimal research, I believe 2 of the wires are positive and the remaining 2 wires are negative. You wire both of the positive wires to the positive terminal and the negative wires to the negative terminal. So you will have two wires on one terminal and two wires on the other terminal.
Thanks for this video, it helped confirm i'm not crazy for trying to reuse the harness. GM was wild for this design. The 07 Saturn Aura is excatly the same.
You’re welcome. Glad it helped you out. Most things are identical between the Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura. Just drove the Pontiac yesterday, speakers still booming like a champ. 🔊🔊🔊
