    I think I speak for most of us, the STG44 is one of my Holy Grail guns. The last time I saw a parts kit it was around tax return season at about $10,000 for the parts kit. I won’t pass that up again.

    I believe this was one of your best videos LAV. I enjoy all your vids on the STG. Your enthusiasm for the platform is obvious.
    As an aside, I read...and I wish I could remember where...that the reason they didn't use wood out front was that so much hard wood was being used by Mauser on the K98s that it was hard to get allotted. I sounds reasonable, but who knows?
    Please keep the great content coming and godspeed in your COMPLETE recovery.

    On the plus side, the drop to the buttstock makes the shooter a smaller target, when fighting from a foxhole or trench. Its easier to clear the muzzle above dirt and still keep your head low.

    I was just looking for a modern replica but it seems the company making them failed. The influence on the AK, AR, G3, MP5 etc. is just too cool. I want one, but in a modern caliber (maybe 7.62x39?) and actually affordable.

    This gun has more in common with the AR-15 than the AK, man. The magazine release & catch, the dust cover, the selector, the hammer through the bolt. Recoil spring in the back as well.

    I have a nice long article about the STG-44. The infantry school, where the rifle was tested (they are the ones who demanded the switch to a closed bolt design), found out that the heavy weight isn't a problem compared to all the advantages it provide.
    Even new recruits could hit far more targets with less ammo.

    16:51 You're thinking of the American HMG StG, who's "replicas" massively cut corners and they stole everyone's money. The German company you're thinking of is Sport-Systeme Dittrich, who are still in business and their replicas don't cut corners.

    Prvi Partizan had a lot of experience manufacturing Mauser Kurtz ammo because until the adoption of M70 (Yugoslavian/Serbian AKM)in late '60s. Yugoslavian Army paratroopers where armed with Stg44s as their main weapon.Yugoslavia got at least a 10.000 Stg44s as a war reparation from Germany after WWII.After the adoption of M70 most of the Stg44s where sold to the Libyan army.

  • @garrisonnichols807
    @garrisonnichols807 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm so glad the Germans didn't have these rifles made in the millions. I've heard people say if only the Nazi's had more of "blank " being tanks, airplanes, V2 Rockets or Messerschmitt Me 262 jets they could have won the second world war. Well if there's one weapon in the Germans arsenal that definitely gave them an advantage and actually could have at least prolonged the war it's definitely the Sturmgewehr. These rifles were used during the Battle of the Bulge to devastating effects to US soldiers lives. When you think about it even with only 25 rounds in the magazine that still triple the round count to the 8 rounds in a M1 Garand. Only the Thompson or M3 Grease gun in 45 ACP came close with 30 round mags but you're limited to 100 yard ranges and it's a pistol caliber. The assault rifle truly brings the best of both worlds of the submachine gun and rifle into one neat package. The BAR and M1 Carbine would be a close second but both guns are still at a disadvantage to the Sturmgewehr in actual combat situations.

    They made the fore end out of steel, a good conductor of barrel heat to your hand, which would have been better in wood, and the stock out of wood, a poor conductor of heat, which would have been better in steel, to retain the recoil spring. All that genius let down by odd material selection

    If I could only have one firearm, I don't know which I would pick: the MP-44 (or MP-43) or the Thompson 1921. It would not surprise me if you have both. Thank you for everything. I pray for your recovery. Edit: I would love to see you and Mark Novak discuss WW2 weapons such as this one. Your opinions from a soldier's perspective, his opinions from the standpoint of design and conservation.
    Another edit: why did the Germans waste their time on the HSC and threaded barrels on the MP-44? Great question!
    In my opinion, this question is unanswerable and can only be asked in hindsight. Contemplating the question is a fascinating exercise in counter-factual speculation. If I had to guess, I'd say that the Germans making these firearms didn't know that they were wasting time and resources. Firms that made the HSC did so because they had contracts to do so. Obviously, we know that Germany was defeated on 8 May (9 May, if one is Pусский), 1945, but at the time these weapons were being manufactured no one knew that. According to Albert Speer (and confirmed by the US Strategic Bombing Survey), German wartime industrial output peaked in March of 1945. It only stopped when German industry was physically overrun and occupied.
    "In order to understand the past, one has to pretend one does not understand the present."-- Paul Fussell.

    The PPK is not intended to be a fullsize service pistol.
    PPK = Polizei Pistole Kriminal
    this is meant for Plain clothed criminal officers, they dont own or wear police uniforms in Germany so it was intended to be small an concealable.

    the only new thing that was represented with this firearm was the truly first intermediate cartridge. and that’s pretty much it. everything else in it is just a good compilation of already existing mechanisms of many different designs. same goes to the any other assault rifles. they might have few distinctive features but overall nothing fundamentally new.
