I got my first acoustic Kala U-Bass in June 2010. I picked it up at the courier depot and drove to play at a bandstand. I had 15 minutes to get the feel of it and then we started. I played it at countless venues in jazz bands and big bands and everyone loved the sound. At one rehearsal I brought one of my regular electric basses and the drummer was upset because he loved the big deep sound. I'm using Aquila Thunderbrown strings. They are non metallic and the sound great. They are not sticky or floppy like the other non metallic strings.
I was considering buying this TODAY and you just sealed the deal for me. I want it specifically for being able to play around the house but not at my work space. And I could use it for work too. Win win.
@ashinbristol those are made to be in GDAE not EADG but I ended up finding some Gold Tone MicroBass Silverbacks Silver-Wrapped Nylon Strings, hopefully they feel good on this thing!
Thanks Jonny, a great review. I had an Ashbury Ukulele bass for a few years, which I loved, that had metal strings. Eventually the strings pulled through the bridge so the bass was firewood. The Fender has metal wound nylon core strings which reduced the tension and avoid damaging the bridge. I love this bass. It’s a really robust bit of kit, well made and sounds great. I’ve used mine with a jazz trio and it amazed everyone.
I had played one briefly and unplugged at a local guitar shop, but DAMN! The tones you got (especially with the Tone control dipped down) for pick playing, slap, and all of the effects, this lil P-Bass sounds GREAT! And this is MUCH smaller than my double bass! I'd either play my double bass, or a little Ukulele Bass, and just absolutely skip acoustic bass guitars. 🙅♂
I've have one of these and they're great for when you want to play music in bed ! 😂 I'm looking for a small battery bass amp to go with it. Any recommendations would be appreciated . Thanks . 🎸
Try a Roland Micro Cube bass RX, the 4 speaker version, I have one and they are incredibly versatile little amps, battery 6AA's or mains operated with a fantastic sound that defies their diminutive size.
Judging people that play guitar at music festivals is low. Playing music should be praised and appreciated. I guarantee you look like more of a pratt filming a TH-cam video doing a bass uke review at a festival.
@JonnyDibble yeah. Don't get me wrong, cool video but to me it sounds awful and is still a gimmick. P bass is the greatest tone of all time and this thing sounds guff. Modern electric basses are already very portable. Try lugging around an upright, because once you've done that at a few gigs, carrying a couple of electric basses around is no issue. If you want something more portable get a Mustang. I think people will buy these for a laugh then try and sell them on a few months later after gathering dust. I did particularly like the part in the video you slapped on it, good laugh. But again, tone wise... come on. If I'm at my local open mic and someone busts out one of these and a banjolele I'm throwing a tantrum and leaving.
@@JBassMan yeah the slap is silly on one of these haha. But I genuinely don’t think these sound awful. No replacement for a proper bass, obviously, but a fun alternative that could have some applications

lol thunderbrown. There are two types of thunderbrowns, they both rumble but only one type is not sticky and doesn’t sound like shit.

They don't sell strings for these things, insane. If you find the right set plz tell me!
You won’t be disappointed.
I’m told the Kala KA bass 4 string work. They the same nylon core wrapped in metal.

Bass ukeleles are really changing the game, having the Fender name on what used to be a gimmick is a big deal.
Sounds great! Interesting that it has a set-neck!
Cool sounds
I agree!
Might be the only Fender I can afford.
Same here. I'm thinking about getting one if there's a special sale listed for the upcoming holidays.
Would this feedback like hell on stage though with a little distorted tones?
@@bobbyzig3879 Not sure about through an amp, but it doesn’t feedback with the drive whenever I’ve used it
if so just stuff the inside with foam
Curious to know what pedals you used for this. The tone is killer!
@@joan_contreras all in the Line 6 HX Stomp!
I love mine! Really hard to find a gig bag or case for it though. I went with a gig bag made for tiny classical guitars and it's oversized
I got a dust bag for mine from Shein of all places. It's not padded but is the right size.
You upload this the day im considering getting one. Its this or a squier P. I need a P in my arsenal but also want a Uke bass for out snd about
can u play it unplugged as well with those strings?

Not for me but definitely looks more fun to have around than I expected it to. Nice demo!

How is the intonation on these fenders? I had a Kala U bass and the intonation was terrible with no way to adjust it

Pity Fender couldn't have gone the Stratacoustic route, and made it full size.
