This was my first tablet. I bought it refurished on ebay as well. I had to replace the charging port about 5 times and speakers about 3 times as they always fried quickly. I loved it though. other than those 2 issues it was a solid machine. Rooted was even better to get later Android versions.

I have its descendant, a 2013 Nexus 7, as a gift of my aunt who live in U.S since Asus chose not sell it much in my contry. It was my first device ever. Entire of my childhood hood was it. watching hours of TH-cam, reading book, capture life moments. In fact, nearly all of trip I do when I was a stubborn and ambitious boy was inside it. It is a lot more powerful compare to the 2012 version but still a bit laggy on running Asphalt 8 in cranked settings. I lost it in 2017 because I bring it to beach and accidentally drop it to the water when I taking a photo of my family. Now I own a Nokia 8.1 which share the same stock Android experience but with better camera, ability to run COD: Mobile and Genshin at very good settings, lighter and also more suitable for my life as a high school student who need to work on the go. But the Nexus 7 2013 still be the best thing I worked with.

I remember when we first came to NZ, my father bought me one of these. Mine recently broke unfortunately. 😓 These are still very capable tablets with a good custom ROM installed. Also, great video as always Nathan. I'm glad to see these nexus tablets being covered again. 👍 @BrandonNel10

I remember how my friends played Minecraft on Android tablets and the fact that I didn't own any made me cry so I used to go to their homes just to play Minecraft and we used to build for hours of fun. Those Good Old days when owning a tablet was a gaming luxury....

This is way better then a old ipad, it can at least unofficially run a fairly new os version, and even not doing that at least you can still install apps
@Lasse Lauwerys didn't know apple still allowed such support for a 5 year old os... Anyways my point was almost everyy app still supports android 5 and even if they don't this tablet (unofficially) still supports android 10 a 1 year old os, and if works out in could even run the latest, but the codes got to be made stable first
@Lasse Lauwerys Personally i like how apple handles legacy devices on the app store vs how google deals with legacy devices and the play store.
On the appstore if you downloaded something before, you can do the whole “install last compatible version”. (could still be better tbh)
On the play store if an app isnt supported on the device, it doesn’t show ip at all. Brilliant.

I got one of these new as a birthday present in 2012. I still think that dimpled soft touch back was a really nice design. For the time it was a really good value tablet. Unfortunately part of how Google kept the price down was by using very cheap, low quality flash storage. This meant that a couple of years later mine was basically unusable, even with custom ROMs.
@ronulld is my Twitter handle and here is a story. I remember the day this device got released. Since this was one of the first devices to get Android 4.4 Kitkat they had a collab with the chocolate company to give away some of these. As always I entered the giveaway but didn't win. I still have the wrapper with the promo banner with me. Hope I win one of these and I will send the wrapper to you if you wanna add it to your retro collection.

I bought one of these recently, installed android 11 and Niagara Launcher, still a fantastic tablet! Honestly feels just a little slower than my Galaxy s8, great tablet (however, I got the 2nd generation version)

I got a 2nd gen Nexus 7 last week. It seems significantly better than the first gen. Slimmer, 2GB RAM, 1080p screen

I remember using one of these and rhe performance on Android 5.1 was abysmal. If you wanna sacrifice security and app support, stay on the stock OS it comes boxed with or install a custom rom.
This tablet would be perfect as my secondary device! Nexus 7 is sufficient for me to do online class meeting and notetaking (notetaking on my 5" screen is literal hell). And I really miss those days of tweaking Android, here I go XDA 🤩 Bonne chance everyone!

I think Nexus 7 is a very good tablet. The full Nexus serie was made for Penetration testers.

man, this tablet feels so nostalgic to me, I miss the old nexus lineup. Of the phones and the tablets. I had nexus 5 back in the days and it was a good phone, even for use in 2016. The tabled had a friend of mine though.. I still remember how we played minecraft on it. Specifically Minecraft PE 0.6.0 Alpha. Good times (my Twitter handle is @LeoTheFolf)

I still have a 2013 Nexus 9, it's running a custom rom (9.0 I think). I use it as a smart home status and controller.

I already have two of these. One of them I don't use, but the other.. I changed the battery for new one with slightly higher capacity than the original one. And added 10w wireless charging coil inside and connected it to the pogo pins internally. The last hardware upgrade was that i put bigger copper tape/foil for better cooling, because I have installed Lineage os (after trying lot of custom android based roms and even ubuntu) and custom kernel with overclock.
And sorry for my english. It Is not my mail language.
I still have mine from 2012 and I still use it occasionally and it works great

There is a serious issue with installing Android 5.0 on the Nexus 7 that cripples the device.over time.
However, you can install a replacement OS on it and it circumvents the issue. I installed LineageOS and it ran LIKE A BOSS and it was super easy to do. Hope that helps the winners.

Even though the tablets come with US power adapters the voltage input is 100-240 volts, (3:49) so as long as you can adapt the pins to fit into your local wall socket it will work. Cheap plugs adapters are easy to find. Twitter handle is @billy_b_appl
It's a shame these are the 1st gen ones as the flash memory degrades quite quickly making it run even slower. Still have the old 2nd gen one which is useful for random NFC stuff

Love these older Nexus devices, never had one personally but they're fantastic for running FOSS mobile software OSes. I'm using a Meizu Pro 5 as a mobile system rescue machine (running UBports Ubuntu Touch) for something similar just now!
