ID like to say luke that when i replaced my cdz lazer 2 monthes ago, it came in exactly the same packaging as yours except it was in a plastic bag inside the box. but i never desoldiered that join. but still my cdz works perfect, loads right up, no issues
Nice stuff man, I'd love to have a cdz, such a cool collector's piece. I had to adjust the pot on my ngcd top loader's laser mech a few years back, but thankfully I didn't have to replace the whole laser mech. Loved having a look at this repair. You really are a life saver for consoles bro. As always, great to see another retro console saved my friend!
Thank you so much for this video! Because of your explanation to remove the solder on the replacement laser I was finally able to figure out what I was doing wrong with my Sega CD. Now I finally got it working!
It is very easy to install a region switch on the CDZ. The system by default is in Japanese region. You just drill a hole through the US labeled JN1 jumper trace and install an on/off switch wired to the jumper ends. It is that easy. Hardest part of it is just mounting the switch on the back, which is also simple to do really.
absolutely it does! I dont need one now, but it's bound to happen some day. Hey can you point me in the right direction to find out how the speakers are amplified in an MVS cab? What NG resources would you personally recommend? There is a lot out there, but I want to cut to the chase.
Love your channel Luke, my question is if you can do a vid on Repairing the Neo Geo CD FRONT LOADER CD problems. What I have is the EJECT ICON flashes and the tray constantly ejects, dose not load anything. Thx.
Nope different model lens for the Front Tray Loader and regular Top Loader NGCD systems. Front Tray Loader uses a Sony KSS-240 and the Top Loader uses a Sharp H8147AF. Hope this helps.
Hey Luke, can I run a repair question by you? I have a Core Grafx here, the grey one, which randomly glitches and causes games to crash. I've done a complete capacitor replacement and reflowed many a solder all over the board, but no dice. What would you guess is the issue. Games usually play fine for 10 minutes or so before crashing. Sometime they crash right at the star menu. Rarely games don't boot at all for a few tries. Could it be weak pins in the cart slot? How would you unbend those?
Just go to the Neo Geo dot com forums Tech Discussion section. Use search function or just start a post if you are already registered. If not registered, you have to make a certain number of posts and something like 2 weeks has to go by before you can start a new thread there. Best place to go though for this info.
Im wondering if anyone can help.ive got a multi game pcb connected to jamma harness.on the game menu the coins dont register and i cant select a game. but once a game autoloads the coin and buttons work fine
Luke-san I hope Japanese video games players know about your amazing skills & you earn money doing repairs for them as well as the odd Gaijin, Southern Barbarian! ;) I don't know what job you do or if you would have time to do all that as well as your normal job but regardless you are a Don, a real inspiration for people who love their games and want to learn more about repairing and maintaining these great old machines! Thanks for all the videos and best wishes to you and your folks! ^_^
I just got one of these consoles but it has no psu or pads. Any idea where to source a power supply (or the plug end at least) for a reasonable price luke? The ones i've seen on ebay they want silly prices like £40 without postage!
i never had to touch the pot nor did i even bother with desoldering anything and my cdz is perfect. do you need to desolder it then, because i never and it works as normal, i didnt even check to be honest, maybe it came desoldered!
Nope. CDZ doesn't have a faster speed CD drive, just a larger cache. You would have to write a different bios to run the games faster. I personally asked Ben Heck the same question you all are asking. Not all hope is lost though, keep a lookout for clone consoles to do that job. Check out the Poly Mega for almost zero load times.
I wonder if it´s possible to change the CD drive from the CDZ to a Neo Geo CD unit. That way you will have faster loading times on a prettier machine (I find the CDZ design ugly) But I guess it´s not possible at all haha...
hey Luke, been trying to get your response on a video request I sent you. If you get a chance, please check it out at watch?v=8MAcwnXRUwE TH-cam won't let me send this vid to you without making it public which is why i'm sending it on this comment. Cheers
Very good procedure to know if the Neo Geo CD unit stops reading discs. So glad the laser unit part is easy to get and not expensive.
Really like how you fix those old consoles and give them a second life! Most of the people would throw it away. Keep up the good work Luke!
Holy crap. Your repairskills and knowledge always amaze me to no end. Nice job!
I am happy for you that you got it to work again. Thank you for sharing.

Excellent tutorial. Simple and to the point.

Good to see that there's a fix to this kind of problems.
i'm pretty sure this video will make happy someone some day.
Thanks, Luke. Couldn't figure out where the anti static blob was.
I can't help watching your videos and RetroGameTech's videos, they are always interesting. Love how your PS3 box is your workstation.
okay thanks.. I think I may have seen that site once upon a time... I appreciate the recommendation!
Luke is such a baller, using a PS3 box as a table.
This is awesome Luke. I remember having to tweak Laser Pots on a PS2 which had the Disc Read Error back in the day! :)

I'm curious if that laser part number works on the regular NG CD (not the front tray version)
Love your channel Luke, my question is if you can do a vid on Repairing

Luke....why do you not have your own repair shop? "Lukes Restoration" ...... Your one stop repair shop.
Nope different model lens for the Front Tray Loader and regular Top Loader NGCD systems. Front Tray Loader uses a Sony KSS-240 and the Top Loader uses a Sharp H8147AF. Hope this helps.

Is there a way to replace it with a more powerful laser to speed up loading times?
I just got one of these consoles but it has no psu or pads. Any idea where to source a power supply (or the plug end at least) for a reasonable price luke? The ones i've seen on ebay they want silly prices like £40 without postage!
Thanks for doing this, because I think I am going to get me a cdz if I don't buy a consoleized version
Do you live near any UpGarage? Its a auto parts store in Japan. I was just wondering if youve ever seen it, or been in there. haha thanks!
I always wonder if you could repair a ps3 yellow light of death
Good vid thanks for this info!
Great Tutorial Luke. Thank you for sharing your knowledge..:)

Do ya know how to instal fans into a CDZ? If so, would ya make a video how to? :D
Maybe it's possible to connect a SCSI CD-ROM to a Neo Geo CD but it's a lot of work and probably doesn't speed up the loading times a lot...
Those damn lasers!! Haha great vid
How many Business Shirts do you go through? You seem to be always fixing this stuff and wearing one. 0.o
My PS3, Dreamcast, and Wii need power-supplies; funny that the GC power-supply won't work with the Wii.
Is there any way (MOD) to make a NGCD load games faster?? (i have a top loader here).
by the way.... great video !!!!!

CDZ > Toploader!!!! Deal with it... better!!! You know, the loading!!!
