Miraculous Ladybug: Awakening premiered as a soft reboot of sorts to the Miraculous franchise which I'm cool with because I'm not a fan of how they left things off. The movie wasn't perfect, but it was fresh and pretty much gave me everything I was hoping for. Personally I'd recommend it.

Astruc's Marinette: obsessive crazy psychopathic-level stalker who can't handle Adrien being with anyone she doesn't deem worthy (herself)
Zag's Marinette: Awkward flustered teenager who just doesn't know how to get her crush's attention but still has her hopes and dreams and finds her confidence
Astruc's Adrien: Cast to the side and extremely inconsistent as a character such that his two main personality traits are he is a smiley 'yes man' and is Gabriel's son. He is so paper-thin in character trait that he can be molded into whatever Astruc needs him to be for the episode or arc
Zag's Adrien: A depressed teenager who finds his hope and freedom in being Chat Noir and being equal partners with Ladybug
The reason I say Zag's Marinette and Adrien is because what I described above is both Season 1 and the movie's Marinette and Adrien. Both of Zag's major contributions to the show are consistent. It's Astruc fking everything up

This film reignited my love for LadyNoir. It was originally my favorite side of the love square in the show, but I got really pissed at the way Ladybug was treating Chat Noir in season 4 and lost enthusiasm for it. This film not only reminded me why it used to be my favorite, but also made it 10x better than it had been even before season 4 ruined it. LadyNoir in the film is absolutely beautiful. I loved every second that those two were on screen together. Whether they were fighting side-by-side, bickering like an old married couple, play fighting, having heartfelt conversations or just being totally sappy and romantic, I loved it all. Their duet near the end absolutely melted my heart.

The movie being better then the show can be kind of a given with a good crew that cares about what was shown in the show, and the benefit of hindsight with knowing what people like and what they didn't. I'd say it's like all the high guardian spice reimaginings that were done. You have an outline and ideas on how to progress, with the bonus of Miraculous being a well liked show. This all adds up to a better take around since the movie crew cared enough to take what was good about a good show, cut what fans didn't like or hated, and finally give them what they wanted.
Put up against other shows and movies that are made nowadays, it's practically unfair to compare them.

You know, honestly, I genuinely believe, in my heart, that this movie is basically a simplified and "Disney-fied" version of what the original plan was for the TV series, proper, in the beginning. You know, before things got all drawn-out like a taffy pull and needlessly convoluted, because Thomas Astruc didn't want to admit that he only had two Seasons worth of material and was too proud to just end his run and hand the reins off to someone else on the Creative Team, who might have ACTUALLY had an idea that would have moved the show and the characters forward.
As for the story in general (and Gabriel and Adrien in specific), it's true that subtlety is not your friend in a 90-minute production and you really do need to be more concise in your message. Still, there ARE glints of the psychology behind the characters peeking through the cracks. If you look closely enough, you can see that Adrien and Gabriel are essentially in the same boat, in that they've both been isolated by their grief. I saw another review that described Adrien as just kind of "sleepwalking through life", in the wake of Emilie's death (which is not an unfair assessment), and in his own way, Gabriel is doing very much the same thing. The only difference is that Adrien came to the realization that he couldn't get through this alone, so he kept reaching out to Gabriel for comfort, only to not get it. But then the Miraculous came his way, along with Ladybug, and THAT kind of became his support system (even if it WAS largely a distraction).
On the other hand, we see Gabriel doing what he's doing. But even though it's not explicitly stated right away, the notion that he'd convinced himself that he was doing this as much for Adrien's benefit as his own can be seen in how this version of Gabriel chooses his targets more carefully. Sure, the first guy was an innocent victim, but that's because it was a test run, more than anything, and Gabriel wasn't fully in control of the process. Once he knew the power worked, though, I believe there's a reason he only chose criminals to do his bidding, after that. Because what the hell...criminals aren't nice people anyway, right? So if anything happened to them or they got hurt, he wouldn't have to feel bad about it. Granted, that hardly makes anything he did a "victimless crime" because he was still endangering the lives of THOUSANDS of people. But I believe that, in HIS mind, this was the one frayed thread still tethering him to his humanity, in the vain hope that, when it was all said and done, he could at least be comforted in the knowledge that he wouldn't have turned into a COMPLETE monster and could still go back to being the husband and father that he was.
But then, we get the scene between Gabriel and Adrien, where Adrien absolutely lays into him, because he'd just gotten his heart broken, and that was the last straw, and all this frustration he'd been carrying around had finally reached a boiling point. So when THAT happened, suddenly Gabriel saw EVERYTHING just slipping away, and it was all too much. Hence, why he turned the power on himself, because at that point, he was simply THAT desperate. Now, would a few more scenes with Gabriel have helped to clarify his descent into this mindset? Yes. Absolutely. But much like the "Adrienette" moments (which, I agree, would ALSO have benefited from some more time in the oven), I think they were hoping that the montage would be enough to illustrate that.
Still, getting into the "Adrienette" side of things, I can kind of see why they pulled back on that a little bit, because it jived more with the story the movie was trying to tell. Just like there was a reason the identity reveal was saved for the very end, because if Marinette and Adrien had found out beforehand, it would have led to a completely different climax. After all, if Marinette and Adrien were on the same page, odds are, they would have easily defeated Gabriel, powered-up or not. But while I'm certain the audience would have found that much more cathartic, the thing is that super hero movies generally see the heroes in a situation which purposely puts them at a disadvantage for the final battle, and this was it. Because Marinette and Adrien had fallen out of sync, it allowed Gabriel to gain the upper hand (we can only hope that doesn't become an ongoing thing later on, with any sequels, because let's face it...that would be bad🤞).
And then, of course, we get the ending, which, as I said before, I'm reasonably certain was at least LEANING in the direction the show was originally headed in...you know, before Astruc's madness took hold. Although I also suspect that the original climax was going to be quite a bit darker, with the "equivalent exchange" rules laid out in Season 2 hinting that, for Gabriel to have Emilie back, Adrien was most likely going to die. This would have been the act that breaks Gabriel, leaving Marinette as the only one who can fix everything and bring Adrien back. How were they planning to have her do that? Damned if I know. They probably couldn't figure it out, either, which could be why the movie gave us the ending we got. Not that it was a horrible ending. Certainly better than the hot mess that was Seasons 4 and 5, am I right? 😏
So now, we have the potential for sequels. And I couldn't even begin to guess what's going to happen there, except to say that I HOPE we get to enjoy the payoffs that this movie gave us (even if that fade-out at the end WAS a cheap sucker punch and I sincerely hope someone got a good kick in the shins for THAT). Who knows, maybe we'll get to see more balanced versions of our loving pair, going forward, with Marinette's newfound confidence possibly making her a more lighthearted Ladybug and Adrien maybe being a more serious Cat Noir, having worked through his grief and no longer needing to lean on that identity as an emotional crutch. I would also say that while the pre-credits scene at the end definitely nods in the direction a second movie would go, one can hope that if a third movie gets made (there are rumors of it becoming a trilogy, but that's internet scuttlebutt, so take it for what it's worth), that it'll break away and start going its own way. After all, there are plenty of plot points and story beats from the show, that wouldn't need Gabriel of Emelie around to make them work. In fact, I would argue that outside of the "Agreste Arc", those stories would actually work better, since they would be allowed to stand and develop on their own.
In conclusion, I would just like to mention that I've seen other reviews for this movie and a couple of them have raised an interesting point...can you IMAGINE what it must feel like to be Thomas Astruc right now? I mean, you've been hacking away at this show for five Seasons ("hack" being the operative word here, seeing as how at least half of the show has been a complete garbage fire). And after the fifth Season wraps, your BOSS, who basically said, "Hold my beer", comes swooping in, not a month later. And in the span of 90 MINUTES, he manages to show off a better product than YOU'VE been able to put out in EIGHT YEARS (Yeah, that's how it's done b(BEEP!)tch! Mic Drop! Buh-bye!). I mean, what do you SAY to that?
At least, that's just my thinking on it.

Honestly, instead of a sequel movie, I would love to see a sequel SERIES coming out of this.
You know, so that we can maintain all the development from the movie and still have enough time to explore the other characters and what it means for Natalie to follow on Hawkmoth's steps despite him having given up.
Also, Astruc deserves that giant middle finger his boss gave him! After everything he's done, picking up fights on the internet, undoing character development, sucking his own dick online for all to see while he gets off of the status quo he created and essentially glorifying terrorism while making sure the world knows a 14 years old being neglected and abused by her parents can never become a good person, Astruc does deserve seeing someone else being heavily praised for doing everything he refused to do! Oh, and let's not forget Astruc has been unable to maintain good relations with the best studios that animated the series, unable to keep Disney and Gloob from leaking the episodes, unable to keep the episodes airing chronologically as opposed to the production order that was also a mess and outright undoing character development his colleagues worked hard to put in the show.
Let's be real here, Astruc just REFUSES to be better because of his ego.
Ideally this movie would be a hard reboot for the series (who knows, maybe the success it's seeing will lead Zag himself to reboot the series instead of going for a season 6 or a second movie).

    • @TuxedAaron

@TwilightWolf032 Well, I think making a sequel series with the movie as a jumping-off point is probably too much to hope for. Though you might see a lot of fanfic writers going that route, since the movie is just all-around cleaner.
I do get how you feel, though. After all, I had bailed out after the Season 3 Finale and was resolved to be more or less done with the show and would only MAYBE come back during the final three or four episodes when things would finally start moving forward. And for the most part, as I picked up little crumbs of information here and there, I was largely proven correct. Through Seasons 4 and 5, none of the moments that the show touted as being big, important events actually mattered, because they were just minor detours to eat up as much screen time as possible and ultimately, everything would just go right back to normal (or as normal as this show would get, anyway). But then I found out that this arc had FINALLY ended, and when I checked it out, all I got was, "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!"🤯
I mean, never mind the fact that it isn't actually revealed what Gabriel wished for (Astruc dipping into yet another anime trope, this time, the one where the creator tries to APPEAR more thoughtful and higher-minded than he actually IS, by using "cryptic obfuscation" as a substitute for not coming up a genuine ANSWER to give to the audience). But at literally the LAST-POSSIBLE-SECOND...he tries to give GABRIEL AGRESTE...the narcissistic, emotionally-stunted, neglectful-to-the-point-of-being-outright-ABUSIVE, MAIN VILLAIN that he just couldn't let go of for FIVE YEARS, because he couldn't think of anyone to FOLLOW him...an actual REDEMPTION?!?!?!
WHAT in the legitimate HELL, people?! I mean, I know that, by accounts, Astruc is a vainglorious, self-aggrandizing, control freak, just like Gabriel is, so it makes sense that he'd identify with the prick. But that's hardly an excuse.
Immediately, my thoughts turned back to Seasons 2 and 3, when Chloe was actually growing out of her role as a one-dimensional stock character (and, as a little sidenote, when you’re three Seasons deep and the only one who’s shown ANY kind of overarching character development is “the bratty rich girl”, THAT should have been a signal right there that this thing had already been idling in Neutral for FAR too long). Then we got to end of Season 3, and what did they do? In one episode, they went and ERASED everything they had done with Chloe for the last Season-and-a-half. And when absolutely EVERYONE came after him for it, Astruc tried to justify himself by going, "Oh, but I don't like Chloe and you're not supposed to like her either and she doesn't deserve to have a redemption". 😩
Then why did you GIVE her one, Stupid?! And more to the point...just a minute. You're making it sound like that whole thing with Chloe was an ACCIDENT?! But this thing here with Gabriel was DELIBERATE?! What the HELL kind of ASS-BACKWARDS thinking is THAT?! And then, when Astruc realized that NO ONE was going to take his side on Chloe, he STILL tried to have his cake and eat it too, by introducing Zoe into the mix as a blatant attempt to pacify people and go, "Well, okay, I'll...I'll give you this character and...and she can be like...'Good...Chloe'. Will that make everyone happy?".
NO!!! Because Chloe was the ONLY character that you were actually making INTERESTING!!! I mean, Adrien is still the one in the dark because he’s being neglected and lied to by the people he cares about the most (and we should certainly bemoan that fact, because it's just shady as all hell and he's always deserved better). But because Marinette's power has always been to reset everything back to zero, whenever she can't do that and there are actual CONSEQUENCES to be faced, her default response has always been to just cut and run (the way this Season ended was just another example of that). And while I get that this was by design, to keep AGONIZINGLY dragging out the central arc, it just makes her look SO weak and ineffectual, as the central hero. In fact, I can't help wondering if that's a primary reason as to why Chloe got shafted as badly as she did, because she was the only one showing legitimate growth and was actually getting to the point where she would have arguably overshadowed the two supposedly-main characters.

I stopped watching around Season 3 but it’s nice to see something decent with this series. The movie proves it could be great in the right hands. Still wish we lived in the universe where Toei/PreCure helped make the anime series but this is by far the best thing to come from it (with some elements reminding me of the PV such as Adrien being antisocial with the headphones). It’s still not perfect but I’ll happily watch this over the current series for sure.
Also it seems the reason why they gave Marrinette a different singing voice was because it was the same one that sang for her in the French version and she’s a celebrity of sorts. Dunno about Adrien’s since it was different in both versions. Funny how Keith Ferguson was the only one to sing in the dub (besides Mela Lee) and I could tell he was enjoying it at least.

I know I’m late to the party, but my friend and I watched this movie together and enjoyed it. Admittedly I didn’t really like the songs. I feel like they interrupted the flow of the story. Overall I enjoyed it. I honestly gave up on Miraculous Ladybug halfway through season three because I got bored, and mostly just save fan art and watch clips so I kind of know what happens in the end. I enjoyed the movie far more than the series. My friend and I were so annoyed that they fades to black before they could kiss but once again it was enjoyable. Ten times better than the series.

I love the movie, it was definitely better than the show, but I wish they would've kept the umbrella scene, it was one of the best scenes in the whole miraculous series and it stays rent-free in my head. The way Adrien stood there with a small smile on his face with his umbrella towards Marinette, looking at her and only her, Marinette looking straight into Adrien's eyes, the thunder in the background, the rain, the atmosphere, my God that was such a magical moment.
I'm sorry I just love that scene so much 💕

This movie definitely feels like a breath of fresh air compared to the series! The characters are well-written (although Plagg could've been handled a bit better), it feels like the movie addresses a lot of the complaints from the show, the chemistry between the main characters felt more natural instead of questionable, the songs were good (despite one mismatch singer for Marinette), the action scenes were eventful, and the animation is amazing. Overall, this movie is fun and enjoyable!

They only needed 3 songs: Marinette's "I want" song at the beginning, Hawk Moth's villain song, and the LadyNoire duet. The rest were just too much for me personally.
I also wasn't a fan of Marinette's singing and speaking voices sounding so different. Otherwise, the movie was fun. Really what the fandom needed I think.

The movie has one giant issue and that it’s trying to fit 4 or 5 seasons of character development and plot into an our and a half. It just was trying to do too many thing in such a short amount of time.
And even then it’s leagues better than the show it’s based off of!
The character dynamics are SO MUCH BETTER than the show’s, and I love that.

So my friend and I looked up the singing voice for Marinette in the movie, and apparently the singer is the same in French and English dubs. Sadly the difference between her singing and talking voice did take me out of the movie every time it happened.

I really liked the movieoverall but I agree with the points you mentioned they could have flshed out a little more. I don't mind that it was a musical (I love musicals) even though the songs were not really outstanding... I just got the impression they could have used the time more for characters and build-ups.
Overall they handled things a lot better than the show... Especially the season 5 finale gets worse the more I think about it (while the action/fighting scence have potential I still can't believe how they handled Adrien when it would have been his fight).
The only thing I'm really mad about in regards to the movie is Plagg being completely mistreated and just being disgusting. Of course the show has similar running gags with him but there his character is so much more and most importantly... he has become a good friend to Adrien. It made me sad to see him like this. But even Tikki felt different in the movie. While we don't get to see a lot of interactions between the Kwamis and humans they felt way more distant. That's the only thing the show handled better (and I can't believe I'm admitting this but despite all the trash they pulled over the years I have to give credit where it's deserved).
But the movie was really nice and I'm looking forward to a sequel. Maybe they will use it to fix some of these minor issues.

I've yet to see any episodes of 'Miraculous', but from your description, I would've as disappointed in the series as I am with 'RWBY' after Monty Oum's tragic death- too many filler episodes that don't advance the story, wearing away my patience and my interest as a direct consequence.

When you drag it out they way they have with Miranette and Adrien, you're not "preserving the status quo", you've just gone stagnant. And stagnant is only a small shuffle-step away from boring.
So, to prevent stagnation from becoming boring, you have to try all sorts of increasingly contrived and goofy gimmicks to fake that you're not being stagnant.
The movie was able to avoid all that, because they didn't need to drag it out. In fact the problem with the movie (as you hinted in your review) is that the movie is TOO SHORT. The almost ignore Adrien's arc to keep the run-time down (and also to keep Cat Noir from taking over the movie). They could have easily split this into two movies (one more focused on Miranette and the second more focused on Adrien) if they had wanted to - but they probably were only contracted for ONE (let's see how it does before we green light a sequel) movie.
And, do you think Netflix is shorting themselves? This movie was good enough they could have dropped this in theaters for four weeks (all of August) and made some Box Office bucks before streaming it (right now it would only have Elemental as competition - and I'd take my 6-year-old granddaughter to this before taking them to Elemental). I think they could have covered the production cost of the movie. Just throwing it up on Netflix doesn't actually make them any money (and I don't know that they have any rights to income from Ladybug merch).

  • @SpectreBagels

I enjoyed the film but I agree with someone else who's review I saw, that this movie should have been a 2 parter to flesh out the dynamics between the love square and Adrien's relationship with his father and problems with his mother. Also to show more of Adrien.
The 1 thing I just completely don't like is the treatment of Plagg in this movie. No wiggle room to like it.
If they bring in the other miraculous thay they teased in the beginning of the movie, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON'T COPY THOMAS AND DONT INCLUDE HIM IN IT. Him and his hateboner for Chloe cause of his own personal problems is just aweful and ruined her character and an interesting aspect of the show. Dont even include Zoe, she is a nothing character.

While I did enjoy the movie, I'd say it hasn't fixed all of the major flaws in the series. For instance, Adrien is still far from being the co-protagonist the title implies him to be.
Sure, compared to the series he's less of a comic relief, and at least he was granted a role in the finale, a closure with his father. But as you pointed out, the film tends to follow Marinette's POV way more than his, especially when they're not wearing a mask.

Characters: 7 or 8 (likeable and fairly realistic, with beautiful chemistry, but also kind of generic personality-wise)

I know this show has an awful reputation. It's exhausting honestly, to be one of the few who still unironically loves it. Yes, it's majorly flawed, the dialog can be incredibly clunky, sometimes they set things up and don't pay them off well. But dang it if I don't still find this show incredibly charming!
I just adore the characters. Which are, in my opinion, so watered down and generic in the movie that I couldn't be bothered to care about their relationship or reveal. The Gabriel arc I also found rushed and predictable.
The answer to the show's slow pacing shouldn't have been to speed-run all the big things in one single movie. Zag is planning a trilogy. So why not focus on developing both Adrienette and Ladynoir in this one and wait till the sequel to do a reveal? When it might actually make an impact?
As an aside: I acknowledge I could be wrong about this but I don't believe they actually "redeemed" Gabriel in the season finale of the show.

I got into Miraculous a little late, maybe around season 3 or something? I know it was a few years out. Pretty much agree I liked the concept and most of the characters (mainly Adrien, Plagg, and a few side ones), and thought the story worked as an episodic series and then slowly turning to a more serialized one.
However, season 3 just kinda didn’t do it for me and I lasted up to mid season 5 and finally just went “F*** you, Marinette and your stupid need to be in EVERYTHING in every episode, you creepy, infuriating stalker!!!” (…. yeah it was a pretty nasty split on my part🥲😅).
Wasn’t planning on watching the movie, but most channels I followed admitted it was dumb but in that cheesy season 1 and 2 vein so I thought “well, why not?”
Firstly, yes, the animation is gorgeous!!! I think what really sells it all is the lighting, which is so detailed that it’s hard not to notice and really get drawn in. Second, all of the side characters are pretty much just there, but I’ll take it since it helps flesh out Marinette and Adrien a lot more. RIP Plagg’s character though 😭😭😭😭
Third, I was a lot more invested in this story, especially since Marinette was toned down in her usual antics and Adrien’s grief about his mom is more pronounced. It just made them more human and rounded, and it felt more impactful when Adrien turned down Marinette. I can’t blame the boy about being heartbroken about Ladybug cause she was still his main channel for processing and moving on from his grief, and I’m also more sad for Marinette because the movie actually showed them being friends and her first interaction with him was one of kindness when she was feeling down.
Fourth, there were actual stakes in the movie in that Ladybug didn’t have “Lucky Charm” to fix everything and needed Cat Noir to help her. Meaning that if the movie-verse expands, we may see them learning how to be more strategic in minimizing damage or wrapping stuff up quicker. Yeah, Ladybug did fix Paris at the end, but I’m hoping they keep it down to a “use only when absolutely needed” thing or give Cat Noir an equivalent boost, cause that cat needs way more of an arsenal!!!
Could go on more, but think I’ll just stop it here. The movie isn’t perfect and there were areas they definitely could improve on. However, there was a lot of heart placed in to this and I would much rather see where this version of Miraculous go than whatever nonsense the show is dragging with.
