I personally think that Caroline Bowman is an excellent choice for Evita... she comes off as very charismatic and dynamic.. also her voice is unbelievable.

Caroline Bowman brought something just as brilliant and poignant to Eva as Patti Lupone did. I believe that they are equal, each with obviously different strengths. Mandy Patinkin has such a unique quality and passion that he will always be my favorite Che, not to disrespect the phenomenal performance by Josh Young. Sean McLaughlin is my favorite Peron, and such a humble guy too! I met all of them, Caroline multiple times, and they are all gems.
Patti Lupone's portrayal was executed with such precision that her timing, pitch, body movement and humor, the fluidity of it all, will leave you breathless and completely enthralled.
I think Caroline played a spectacular Eva. I have watched Patti's performances and I think she is an incredible performer, but Caroline makes Eva harsher and brings more life into her. Josh Young also played an incredible Che, better than Ricky and Mandy. Sean was a very good Peron as well.
I agree Sean sounds great when he sings but anyone who knows the story of Evita, as I do since I became obsessed after seeing the show at the age of 7, knows how much older Juan Peron was than Eva. I just don't know why they cast someone so much younger than she which breaks away from the original production. To me, that detracts from a MAJOR story line that she solely went after him for the power and money that being with him could bring her. To cast someone so young and attractive makes it seem like it could have been for love; which it wasn't.

They said it was real love. They filled each other's needs. She is an enigma to this day. Sean is matinee idol good looks with an angel's voice. I'll take that any day!
But Remember that in Patti’s days the directors were still looking for the right choices in this show... Now they know what they want and what works in the theatre.
Okay, I love what Caroline is doing, but I've just gained a new appreciation for the slimy politician vibes "Peron" effortlessly affects from 4:34 onward. Even standing there silently, he has such a vibe to him. I love it.
Stunning voices. really impressive. such a great performance! IMO that's a completely wrong casting tho. Peron is REALLY hot and young while he should be in his 40s/50s. Eva is not usually portrayed as this attractive. It makes the character more interesting when she actually is "a poor little nothing. no style, no class". This cast is amazing and the actors are really good but just don't think it works from a direction point of view! x
yeah, this was the cast that I first saw with Evita, and it made Peron seem like a wealthy, young contestant on the bachelor! It definitely made the themes a but confusing the first time around. The same applied somewhat with the attractive Eva as well.

The tempo needs to be just a smidge fast. It feels like it drags. But damn that guitar gets me lit. And don’t even get me started on how amazing Caroline is. In some ways I think she’s the best singer to play the role of Eva. Obvi no one will ever beat Patti as Eva but Caroline’s voice could kill.
This is actually the original intended tempo, give or take. Webber sped up the score just for American audiences which was common practice at the time (the general belief was that Americans either had a shorter attention span than the Europeans or Americans were just in more of a rush)... either way it was common at the time, but this is actually much closer to Webber's original tempo.
This has so much more movement than Hal Prince's original staging but is somehow nowhere near as thrilling. I think it's because the original, although far more static, created amazing and unforgettable stage pictures while this is a whole bunch of random movement and distraction.
It's probably because the original cast was larger, and more changed with the set. Much more flags much earlier on, the fire, the protestors... This version shows more of the actual progress going on, though the original focuses more on the underbelly of things (IE Ché getting knocked out by Perón's people). Plus, there's something breathtaking in a large amount of people standing on the stage, angrily demanding a new future.

So Eva married Peron when he was about 12? Also, his wig looks more like a crash helmet! Peron was a large (some say ugly) man. Who is this boy playing him? Ridiculous. I saw this production in London, and although I didn't like it, the casting of Philip Quast as Peron was amazing. Look him up.
Josh Young is a super awesome Che. And despite Caroline going into head voice for the ridiculous high note blasts in this song - still sounds awesome to me.
High notes are done in head voice so is it really surprising that she goes into head voice to hit them. Her head voice just isn't as powerful as her chest voice.
they slowed to the tempo a little and their is a banging sound that is very reminiscent to the old factory sounds during the 1940s. It has an interesting effect this banging sound, but this slowed the dynamic pulse of the number. There was some interesting illusions before they go outside, I kept thinking of Nazi occupation by the way the set way designed, and the none moving soldiers in shadows, who became alive when the set went from inside to outside. This is a very fascinating and thought provoking image, it is a shame more was not made of it via some subtle touches to the set, just enough to enhance, but not enough to take away form the song. This version had much going for it, but sacrificed the fierce dynamo of a production number by slowing the tempo. Also inside of having the voting box in centerstage, it would have allowed the movement flow to pick up with a box on stage right and left. The idea of them criss crossing to make their vote was good staging, but to have two boxes would have made for better continuous movement by the performers, and it would allow for Eve and Juan to be front and center. Also the brutality of the voter elections was lost (the original has the police punch Mandy, and drag him offstage) they could have invented something else (besides stealing a ballot) to show how they used intimidation and fear to rule over the "so-called" elections.
It's a great song, but it doesn't fit in with the show. They put it betwixt "Waltz for Eva and Che" and "She is a Diamond." She sings it to Peron, who just sits there, silently. It was very awkward to watch. If it were me, I would've put it after "Dice Are Rolling" when Peron exits the scene. Normally, "Eva's Final Broadcast" immediately follows, but this is a moment where Eva is alone and reflecting about what just transpired: Peron told her she's dying and can't run for vice president. It's a great moment to ask "Where do we go from here?" Plus, in the movie she doesn't sing it directly to anyone; they're just her thoughts ("Deep in my heart I'm concealing things that I'm longing to say").
In the current UK tour that's produced by Bill Kenwright. You Must Love Me is towards the end, just before Eva dies. She's in hospital, weakly singing to Peron, before the finale.
Why did they cast such a young Peron? He was at least 25 years her senior? I will always be biased to Patti Lupone. Caroline has to scream when she sings those high notes. I get to see it in March so I'm looking for to it anyway.
I've seen this company tour 7 times on the west coast already and it is fantastic! The entire cast is excellent but the three stars, Josh, Caroline & Sean will make you fall in love....You'll see in March. The understudies do a good job but try to see the main 3.
I dont think you can hold up any musical as being 100% historically accurate, so why worry about someones age? Also, Im very biased against Patti. Patti was the screamer who paid no real attention to the meaning of the words. It was so nice to hear Caroline sing this part where I can actually understand the individual words, and the emotion matched what she was singing.

But this song is supposed to emulate a speech given by the wife of a literal dictator! Not only that, but she really was the one in control of things. She has to have some serious power and grit come through in her voice here, which I feel Caroline is lacking. I feel she doesn't have the lower range to power through this like Steam Train Patti! Caroline can sing, but her higher notes are just a tad pitchy, at least to my ear. At the end of the day, it's all down to interpretation and preference! I'm not at all saying you're wrong!
btw I think it's poignant how the women in the cast are just walking past the ballot box while only the men can vote in this version (I don't think that was in the film).

("More important, they're not dead…") I actually think Pryce is my favorite Perón, even though he's not actually, you know, singing. Caroline is very strong vocally, but she barrels through a few of the acting beats. A little distressing. Points for leaving in the section that explicitly states the electoral program; were other productions worried populism would be too popular, and we couldn't see the Peróns as opportunists? Weak. I think the movie did best in taking "How annoying that we have to fight elections for our cause" away from Perón and making it a cynical Che line rather than mustache-twirling evil. (Gunton was particularly cartoonish.) Let the political violence be a backdrop to the popular surge, not an explanation for it. Oh, well.
Peronsm at least was not bad Ar gentina had developed a great industrie and sozial Laws were a good example for many others countries.the people really loved both..the free expresion was limi ted and controlled but the oposi tors force(proEngland and EE.UU.) was very hard and with out any mercy,nothing that Peron did or said was good for them..or had any sense ..for the upper classes Peron only had opened the door of a "big poor's cage" and he was the enemie of their oligarc"establishment"..and centenaries privilegies....

If LuPone was "screaming", how could she have lasted a full 10-month run?? She would've destroyed herself! A good high belt should have the power of rolling thunder, with the rounded warmth of a thousand trumpets. Do trumpets need to use their head voice? Does thunder take the easy option? No and no! Caroline using head voice is the easy option. I feel a better choice would've been for her to take the operatic route (she clearly has the range), it would've sounded much sweeter - as if she was literally "sweetening up" the crowd. That's probably what I would've done if I didn't feel up to belting. Evita, as a show, is often considered an opera in itself.
This is a total dud. Peron looks ridiculous, Eva looks like the Hulk next to him. The inclusion of the wedding was clever, but there is no sense of Eva's charisma or manipulation of the masses...just a lot of people moving around as she stands there looking bored most of the time in an awful military outfit. Nothing can outdo Prince's staging of this number from the Perons' bed.

Josh Young has an amazing voice but none of the grit that Mandy Patinkin had. Also imo they should have put Josh in a beret, wig, and fatigues. Would've given a bit more life to the character

Peronsm at least was not bad Ar gentina had developed a great industrie and sozial Laws were a good example for many others countries.the people really loved both..the free expresion was limi ted and controlled but the oposi tors force(proEngland and EE.UU.) was very hard and with out any mercy,nothing that Peron did or said was good for them..or had any sense ..for the upper classes Peron only had opened the door of a "big poor's cage" and he was the enemie of their oligarc"establishment"..and centenaries privilegies....

She is using her mix. Most female "belters" are using it when they get up into those notes.
If LuPone was "screaming", how could she have lasted a full 10-month run?? She would've destroyed herself! A good high belt should have the power of rolling thunder, with the rounded warmth of a thousand trumpets. Do trumpets need to use their head voice? Does thunder take the easy option? No and no! Caroline using head voice is the easy option.
I feel a better choice would've been for her to take the operatic route (she clearly has the range), it would've sounded much sweeter - as if she was literally "sweetening up" the crowd. That's probably what I would've done if I didn't feel up to belting. Evita, as a show, is often considered an opera in itself.
she's not Patti lupone but I think she does a good job her voice is good but she plays evita to sweet and not as powerful and cunning as she was

This is a total dud. Peron looks ridiculous, Eva looks like the Hulk next to him. The inclusion of the wedding was clever, but there is no sense of Eva's charisma or manipulation of the masses...just a lot of people moving around as she stands there looking bored most of the time in an awful military outfit. Nothing can outdo Prince's staging of this number from the Perons' bed.

Josh Young has an amazing voice but none of the grit that Mandy Patinkin had. Also imo they should have put Josh in a beret, wig, and fatigues. Would've given a bit more life to the character
