Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri - 1986 - Darbari Kannada, Adana, and Bhairavi

  • Two legendary musicians, in full command of their respective instruments, perform Raga Darbari Kannada in jhaptal (10 beat cycle), Raga Adana in tintal (16 beat cycle), and Raga Bhairavi in tintal, jhaptal, and ektal (12 beat cycle).
Tabla players take note of Swapan-da's relatively restrained accompaniment in Darbari (compared to the Jhinjhoti from the first half that is posted separately) reflecting the more sombre mood of the raga. I mention this because I often hear tabla players playing too fast or too long and disrupting the mood of the raga which the vocalist or instrumentalist has painstakingly created. Swapan-da performs more playfully in the Jhinjhoti and more subdued in the Darbari and by doing so preserves the mood created by Khan-sahib.

No language can describe the ecstasy of the melody emanating from the strings of the Sarod of Ali Akbar Khan.

the sarod is like the nectar laden flower, which the honeybee Ali Akbar Khan continually dives in to, collecting the sweet pollen there.
I heard him play live with Zakir Hussain ji on tabla in 1972. I seriously thought about studying at his College of Music, but at 18 years old had no money of my own, and parents that shackled me. They abused my sensibilities & prohibited my ideas of deviating from the classical music training they invested in me.
(This made my love for all things Eastern and spiritual grow wildly
    however!)
All glories to Ali Akbar Khan. Today, after so many years, I have visited Gwalior, India...birthplace of Tansen, whom he mentions in the beginning of this video. Tansen lit the lamps of Akbar's palace by singing deepak raga, and brought rains with "cloud" raga. His holy music guru, saint Swami Haridas of Vrindavan, established one of the most popular temples of Vrindavan as he worshiped a beautiful deity of Lord Krishna. spiritual pilgrims flock here to this day.
Even though the dog of Kaliyuga, the Age of quarrel and hypocrisy, is upon us, we can take shelter in spiritual life, and in those truly spiritual personalities who have dedicated their life to the higher realms of human existence. Actually we must take shelter in spiritual life to overcome the degredation of the age.
Christian, Muslim, young, old, black or white, sinful or pious, rich or poor, anyone can realise God. There is no material designation required to listen to the songs, the ragas, the sages, and the scriptures. We have the free will given by the Lord.
All glory be to God, that Supreme Personality of Godhead. 🏵🏵🏵🏵📿

The Alap of Raag Bhairavi feels as if Ustad Ji is calling out to someone. It feels so personal, as if he is crying out "Where are you? Please come." The rest of the Raga is really great, but the Alap is an offering to the Divine.

Such a sarcastic and ignorant comment. The ragas which this song is composed on comes from the Vedas, An ancient Indian scripture still followed and read by the Hindus.
Ali Akbar Saab comes from a Linage of music players that prayed to Hindu goddess of music Saraswati before each practice session.
There is only ONE ENERGY in Hinduism and that one energy takes on multiple forms. Just one God my friend . Hope you learned something new today .

+Shaniel S. Lal Pardon me, but of course I am aware of the Vedas and the historical source of these sounds... I am the last person to doubt this brilliant musician's status... do not presume that I am unaware of the system of musical knowledge called "Sangeet"... you sir had a very stuck-up tone in your last message to me... Ustad Ali Akbar Khan would not approve... neither would Devi Sarasvati... please mind your manners and watch your tone; the world is watching, if not God itself.

This is one of the exceptionally composed colour of life in this planet. It is mellifluous in the fabrication and amalgamation of both western and eastern juxtaposition of musical narration in Ali Akbar Khan's expression at the end of this work. Highly humane and enthralling into a most humble and ethical bahavior of human life after listening into this piece of music. This goes back to the humane and its quality, from which we enable to poster the last piece of humane in this planet.

Magnificent. Ali Akbar Khan is probably my favourite Indian musician, among so many other brilliant performers both vocal and instrumental. I liked the expression on face of the tabla player Chaudhuri when he hears blissful moments that coincide with the rythm, and also the moments of humour when Khansahib quotes themes from Bach, and Greensleeves in what is otherwise such an intense emotional performance!
