This version cuts out the great keyboard solo that follows the guitar (actually, electric sitar) solo. You should find the uncut version and listen again. Steely Dan has dozens of outstanding songs, all different, all brilliant, and always with very cynical and often cryptic lyrics. Don't miss Kid Charlemagne.
And it's not live, they've just synced (badly) the radio version onto a live video. Worst is that they make it look like Palmer is doing the vocals when it's actually Fagan.
Steely Dan is a rabbit hole with a massive collection of great music and were one of the biggest bands of the 70’s. Almost every record collection had Steely Dan in it back in the day.
Their catalog is pretty deep and they kind of became their own genre of music IMO. This is a great road trip song. Reelin' in the Years is a pretty good one.
Steely Dan was a full band initially but then dissolved to their 2 main talents, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen plus very talented studio musicians. Not too long ago I saw you do a Chick Corea video and you expressed difficulties following it. Even though Steely Dan was a "rock" band they have chord progressions and sophistication often found in jazz. They would be another good warmup for a jazz novice. Try "Rikki, Don't lose that Number" or "Aja" There's a ton of songs that veer away from straight rock, particularly on their later albums. "Aja" has some great jazz playing on it.
There is a piece of the song missing near the beginning. I don't know if you edited it or just watched a bad lyric version. But the intro should have been a little longer and some words were missing
One of the greatest bands ever.. 20-25 bangers.. Maybe 10th favorite by them... In concert, they sounded just like an HD CD.. So tight... Michael McDonald toured with them and was a long time friend.. ❤
Love that you all checked this song out! This is one of my favorite songs made by Steely Dan, but of course, they have many other great hits that make you groove and move!! You guys should check out "Peg" by Steely Dan. It's gonna have you guys dancing!
On the same album with Do It Again was a song called Dirty Work. I recommend it, and they have so many great songs. There is a song called "Peg" that is absolutely wonderful! The whole album called "Aja" is fantastic!!
This was my “gateway drug” into the Steely Dan world. I think I may have heard it on AM radio first, so I thought it was a one hit trick. But they kept coming back with “Reelin in the Years” and “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” and they kept getting more and more sophisticated in their songwriting, arrangements and productions. Top tier level music culminating in the album Aja. Enjoy their catalogue, they have so much to offer.
Dominika and Andre I was in high school 1969-1972, there was so much music 🎶 then it was an expression of a larger population, the baby boomers 👶 born 1946-1964 the more people you have, the larger the talent pool. It was creative and experimental, the feel of the Hippies and the start of the sexual revolution, the music was an expression of the changing times. Peace✌️ ☮️ and Love❤️ Gary😊 I had the album in college Steely Dan "Can't Buy a Thrill" it had "Do it Again" the whole album is great! PEACE✌️
I believe that Steely Dan quite often exercise "poetic license" in many of their songs. They will often use metaphors and at times are cryptic. As I recall the 70's I do not remember a lot of "rock" bands using congas and shakers. Santana comes to mind. I have always had a hard time labeling Steely Dan as a rock band. They are masters at mixing genre's into their music. Great reaction. Take care....
Steely Dan is an excellent band that released seven albums between 1972 and 1980. Donald Fagen (keyboards/vocals) and Walter Becker (guitar/bass) were the primary writers in the band. In fact, by the end of the decade there really wasn't a Steely Dan group as it was just Donald and Walter in the studio with whatever musicians they decided to use for a particular album. They stopped touring in 1975. Other songs to check out include Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Showbiz Kids, Reelin' In The Years, Bodhisattva, Black Friday, Doctor Wu, Aja, Deacon Blues, Gaucho and Time Out Of Mind. And there's lots more where those tunes come from.
If you keep listening to these songs pretty soon you are going to find yourself including the 50's, 60's, and 80's as well in your 70's standard of music, it's all good. people actually living their lives and writing about it compared to people now watching other people live their lives, many already dead, is the extent of people's creativity today.
Steely Dan as you heard and saw is not your typical rock band having their own unique sound. They were great musicians and their songs had such great instrumentations and variety. One of my favorite songs of theirs is 'My Old School' which also had a great groove with mind blowing solos.
Every time I listen to this notice something new. 1971 was the start of the music centre and the album. 71 thought of as being the greatest year in music (see David Hepworth's book)
Steely Dan has so many great songs. So many hits "Ricky don't lose that number, Reeling in the years" just to name a few but if you really want to be blown away you should check out "My old school" it has the wildest guitar solo you will ever hear. Some of the coolest horns and a cowbell you will find infectious . you won't be sorry, All the best......
Andre, you understood the theme of the song perfectly. Not all of Steely Dan's lyrics are easy to figure out, but you can always count on superb musicianship, a great groove, and a jazz influence in virtually all of their songs. They really are a cream-of-the-crop band. So happy you liked this; they have so many more great songs to enjoy! (EVERYONE seems to love their song "Peg".)
Brings back memories of one of my favorite concerts at the Terrace Ballroom back in 1972 when Steely Dan was early in their career and this song was popular. The other band performing (Doobie Brothers) was also get their start to long career.
Ha, I saw them a few times in 1974 with the new kid, Jeff Porcaro, on drums, he was always on fire. We knew back then that SD were special. Timeless music we found out.
They have 7 or eight albums with this quality and musicianship. They are considered jazz infused soft rock, but if you listen carefully, you will find extraordinary guitar work and sophisticated drumming. Many in the US use SD as a way to distinguish themselves from your run of the mill headbanger's. A bit of a snob thing. I just think it is good music.
...reelin in the years ...rikki don't lose that number ...hey 19 ...peg ...fm ...josie.... and about 20 more ---- that guitar lead is one of the best ever enjoy !!
The song "Aja" from the album of the same name is widely regarded as their masterpiece. The album is praised by many as the best-produced and best-sounding album.
This was the first Steely Dan song to hit the FM airwaves. That was enough for me - I was a fan for life. (Still am.) Their lyrics are chock full of allusions and hidden meanings, but ultimately their songs all tell a story. The Dan of Steel did not have a set lineup - "they" were Walter B and Donald F, and they sought out the best of the best artists to work with, often varying the line up in the same album. Their engineering was cutting edge. Every album was different - new sounds, new styles, etc. Steely Dan are the artists' artists. As for which songs next - start with the album Can't Buy a Thrill (first album), grab anything from there. Then move on to Countdown to Ecstasy and do the same. At some point you will need to back up and listen to everything from each album - there isn't a bad cut on a one of them. This is a rabbit hole you will not regret diving into.
@@WooBino. Back in the day he was EXTREMELY self-conscious about his singing. He also was a bit camera shy, and this is a "live" (i.e. lip-synced) performance.
Funny, I was talking about SD this past weekend with a friend. My friend commented that SD had a reputation as being difficult to deal with. I told my friend, Well, that may have been the case, but they were a true 70s rock fusion band that stayed true to their "thing" and their distinct sound. They are unmistakable.
What a sound, guys ; so long since I heard this classic & it still beautiful and catchy. Nice rhythm and vibes. Now I wanna remember what else they did. Great pick!😊 From a quick google, I definitely remember Rikki don’t lose that number & Reelin’ in the Years.

Exactly, this is one of those songs that is you want to hear over and over again. I didn't realize that you hadn't listenedto Steely Dan before you are in for an amazing ride as they are one of the greatest groups of all time and they had a unique sound that was a fusion of rock and jazz and played by some of the greatest musicians from that era. So many songs to choose from and all are great. You may want to start with another of their early hit "Riki Don't Loose" that Number"and "Reelin' In The Years".
Steely Dan have their own unique sound, they mix jazz, funk, rock, blues and much more into their music. My favorite Steely Dan song is “FM-No Static at All” but other greats are “Black Cow” @Babylon Sister” and “ Deacon Blues” but they but have dozens of great songs!!! Enjoy the rabbit hole!!!
Thanks for this! Very insightful to recognize what you still have yet to hear from the '70's, even though you have heard so much. There were so many different artists that all had to play live consistently to survive. It was an entire world industry of local bands breaking out to regional/national/international. Others you may not have heard that are great: Talking Heads, Earth Wind and Fire, Aerosmith, Paul Simon, Kool and the Gang, Hall and Oates, The Doobie Brothers...These are examples of acts that made very good music over years in the '70's (and '80's) as well as selling out 15-20K venues every show. There are many more!
I’m surprised you hadn’t heard this band before now on your channel. Super popular. One of the best debut albums ever ( Can’t Buy a Thrill). Jazz infused soft rock with sometimes allot of funk. A staple of “yacht rock” playlists these days. They used top LA studio musicians for most of their run. Unique sound. Total perfectionists and top production quality.
My favorite band. Donald Fagen (singer) had stage fright in the early days, so they had the guy front the mic for this video (this version was a severe cutdown from the original)... Steely Dan is a fascinatingly awesome rabbit hole... Hard to pigeonhole a genre for them... Check out "Kid Charlemagne" or "Deacon Blues"... So many great songs... Donald Fagen also had a fantastic solo career, so check out his songs "IGY" or "New Frontier."
Steely Dan is THAT band who created such a unique sound you never forget it; moves the body, relaxes the mind. Also, if you have a dark sense of humor, look up where they got the name for the band from, and why...LOL.
Steely Dan is a great American rock band founded in 1971. They had a lot of great hits such as "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Hey Nineteen", "Peg", "Dirty Work", "Josie", "Aja", "Kid Charlemagne", "Reelin' In The Years", "Deacon Blues", "FM", "Show Biz Kids", "My Old School", "Babylon Sisters" etc."
Down a very deep rabbit hole. The entire "Aja" album, especially the song, "Aja." "Big Black Cow," "Dirty Work," "Show Biz Kids," "Deacon Blues," "Peg," "My Old School," "Hey Nineteen," "Josie," well, you get the idea. All great.
(another rabbithole) In '75, I turned 18, graduated HS, and could buy beer. I saw Jaws in the theater and the Frampton "Comes Alive" tour in the summer, but the absolute highlight of the year was seeing The Who with Mooney in November. I've seen The Stones twice and Zep once, but that is still my favorite concert memory. Great year! I saw the Tommy tour twice in '89 and saw them once again in the early 2000s, before John passed. I liked Tommy, but Quadrophenia and this tune, Naked Eye, is what turned me into a Who fan. Because you always dig into the lyrics, here's another 10 from Pete Townshend. (and some of his best lead playing) It's Kenny Jones on drums, not Mooney, but still great. Genius lyrics. The Who Naked Eye th-cam.com/video/KqQCZNWaMBY/w-d-xo.html RIP Mooney and John. Thank You!
Steely Dan was one of the best bands of the 70s and 80s.Try- My old school and Reelin in the years I believe you will like them as much as I do Thank you for your reaction.
The audio you're hearing here is the studio release edited to fit this live performance video. They completely edited out a spacey-sounding keyboard solo that comes after the guitar/sitar solo in the middle. If you have a chance, you should go back and listen to the full studio release to hear that. You would love it. This song was a big radio hit in the early seventies, but their sound changed with the times. Try their equally big 1977 hits "Peg" and Josie" for an equally impressive but pretty different sound.
Everyone's favorite band has a favorite band and it's Steely Dan.
"Rikki Don't Lose That Number" was another huge hit for this unique sounding team.

A lot of great tunes by Steely Dan. ..you can pick any of them.

It's butchered, the video is "illustrative" ; there's enough to get this lovely couple interested. They should do more and get properly invested.

Steely Dan is THAT band who created such a unique sound you never forget it; moves the body, relaxes the mind. Also, if you have a dark sense of humor, look up where they got the name for the band from, and why...LOL.
We just found out 😂
If you want the best ever Steely Dan: DEACON BLUES. “This is the day of the expanding man...” th-cam.com/video/4sU2NDId7Bw/w-d-xo.html
They are Rock/Jazz Fusion! 🤨Wow you know all the songs😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
REELIN THE YEARS …. IS A BIG BIG CLASSIC. GREAT THAT YOU HAVE DISCOVERED STEELY DAN, BIG RABBIT HOLE, WITH MANY MANY GREAT SONGS. ROCK ON 👊🖖
Down a very deep rabbit hole.
The entire "Aja" album, especially the song, "Aja."
"Big Black Cow," "Dirty Work," "Show Biz Kids," "Deacon Blues," "Peg," "My Old School," "Hey Nineteen," "Josie," well, you get the idea. All great.
FM, Deacon Blues, or Peg are fabulous! Love this reaction! ❤
(another rabbithole)
In '75, I turned 18, graduated HS, and could buy beer.

RIP Mooney and John. Thank You!
Steely Dan is in the rock music hall of fame and well deserved.
Steely Dan was one of the best bands of the 70s and 80s.Try- My old school and Reelin in the years I believe you will like them as much as I do Thank you for your reaction.
They have so many great songs. Peg, Kid Charlamagne, Reelin in the years, Rikki don't lose that number, etc...
Some of the finest music ever produced is by Becker & Fagan, dba, Steely Dan. Composers of music, always the original. The genre is SD.
Amazing reaction to an amazing reflection!
🇬🇧 "Ricky Don't Lose That Number" & "Reeling In The Years" are just 2 other Steely Dan hits.
