The song is a description of people with an addiction.. 1) for murder, then does it again: 2) dating a girl that you know you can't stand, but then you go and find another one, do it again. 3) A gambler in vegas, thinks he has the 'black cards' to play, then in the end you have to lay your cards down, but he loses all the time, but he goes back, and does it again. The idea, people get addicted to things, and they can't stop they DO IT AGAIN.. so.. "you go back, Jack, and do it again" means JACK is just "any addictive person" out there..
I dont know..i dont think i want the song facts.. in the song im usually running in some dank central american tropical jungle being chased by the Generals Army and insurgents all at the same time. In some kind of covert CIA regime change thing..got some kind of fever .and i cure it with tree frog pee trying to find out my name I had no name for .50yrs but today I was born again hard as a poor mans Jack Ryan.. Jack T. Hoft. First novel.. Dr Steely Dan ..or How i Stopped Worrying About Lyrics and Learned to Love the Vocals
I feel this song is about addiction - the first verse is about violence, the 2nd verse is addition to kinky girls, the third verse is about gambling. These verses are about three different people. Jack is just a general term like “man” or “dude”
I didn't have any idea of what the specifics of it were about when I was in grade school, but it was on the radio all the time, and it's completely interwoven into my existence. Of course I later bought the album and the other albums that were steadily coming out as I was growing up through high school. Steely Dan is such an important and significant band. It's an incredible rabbit hole to go down.
First verse: a bad dude hunts down another dude for stealing his ‘water’ (The Dan often uses euphemisms, or words or actions that stand in for other words or actions - in this case, water=drugs) 2nd verse: a dude is caught in a toxic relationship with a cheatin’ chick. He takes her back again and continues to get abused. Verse 3: A guy swears to everyone he doesn’t gamble anymore, but there he is in Vegas wondering if he could get away with cheating at cards. If I could, I’d make Steely Dan a mandatory class in high school. Everyone would be better. Oh yeah, I’d add government and ethics courses, too.
When people talk about a song that has a great ‘feel’ to it, then you can’t get much better an example than this. One of the all-time classic greats that comes under the banner of ‘never tire of listening to this’. Great review Silas!
Steely Dan is a treat. I envy your hearing them for the first time. Repeat listenings to their work will give you years of enjoyment. You hear something new in the lyrics and music each time. The lyrics can seem cryptic and easy to apply to yourself...And then you realize what the song is really about and go to the next level of appreciation. They were masters of songwriting and production. Just wait until you hear Royal Scam, Katy Lied and Aja.
“Kid Charlemagne” is my favorite song from Steely Dan. You’ll be going crazy for excitement from the sounds and the lyrics tell a very compelling story.
OMG... I was 11 when this came out.... I'm 62 now. ((sigh)) So very many memories this brings back!!! It's one of those songs that just captures that whole era for me. So glad you are getting introduced to this music.
You're on album one of a very deep rabbit hole. This is quantifiably the greatest album group of all time. Every jam perfectly different from every other song they play, yet always signature Dan! Walter & Donald are Legends for a reason. & They employed legends and created legends in modern music 🎶🎶🎵🎶🎸💯✌️🤷♀️
Some people say Donald Fagen used a cheap plastic organ on the recording of this track. Others say it was a Yamaha YC 30. I always hoped it really was the cheap plastic one he played because it sounds more impressive.
This album was released when I was a senior in high school in Dallas. We would get together and listen to the new albums, pass around the album cover and decipher every word. This one blew us away…these guys are just so cool 😎
One of the "Dan's" best. A total crowd pleaser, an eternal favorite. As a 63 year old woman who is probably older than your Mom (lol), I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see young people like you totally grooving on and appreciating this music. Looking forward to your next vid!
How often have you said to yourself when listening to a rock song that fades away at the end: 'Oh, I was just getting into that - I wish it had gone on longer'?
The electric sitar solo in this sonv is what caught me. The sitar sound in this song, and "The Remembering" by YES, inspired me to buy an electric sitar.
I gotta admit, i really like to see how into this music you get. I can tell you loved the solos, especially. Outside of the Beatles, Steely Dan is one of my favorite bands. This song combines elements of blues, rock, jazz, soul, and bossa nova into such a memorable track that really works when combined. Their musicianship, and their in-studio wizardry also created some of the best sonics in music from the 1970's and 80's. They sound like they were recorded yesterday.
Their album "AJA" (pronounced : ASIA) is by far their "Swansong" album (that means their absolute best). Isn't it amazing how awesome music from the 70s can be.. 50 years of and still very tasty.
I haven't even started to watch and I know you're gonna love this track. This was an amazing album, you could hear it being played in a lot of dorm rooms my freshman year at college
Hi @Silas Bailey - for me - you`re a guy with an outstanding music taste and understanding - because you`re so young - and I like it so much. I wished you react some more of the seventies and eighties bands and so on... Best wishes @all and especially to @Silas Bailey from Hamburg - Germany - all thumbs up 👍👍👍 and thanks for sharing !
They did a smash up with Motley Crue called, look again. It called Steely Crue, Look again. It's do it again, and if looks could kill put together. It's a live video, and it is great.
A friend and bandmate from college made his own electric sitar. This was in 1981. He bought a cheap electric guitar, then shaped a piece of very hard wood (might have been ebony), sanded it smooth, then attached it to the body under the strings near the bridge so that they buzzed against the wood when you played it. Very cool. He went on to become a fairly well-known multi-instrumentalist in Nashville.
I remember the first time this song came on the AM radio in my car, on my way to school in 1972. Denny Dias's solo blew my mind, and I'm screaming at my friend, who is this!? Two years later, I saw them live and met all of them. Who would have known?
You should check out the LIVE VERSION from the Midnight Special YT channel. Donald Fagen had "stage reluctance" at first so another singer sang the lead vocal (David Palmer). You can see Denny Dias playing the electric sitar.
I see your guitar in the background so I assume you’re a player. I couldn’t wait for you to hear Walter Beckett guitar solo. It is beyond amazing. This is a well loved song by a band that had insanely good musical abilities! Glad you enjoyed it!
Ahhh…GREAT song! I’ve heard it many times before, but still loved it. I spent an afternoon recently sitting on a sand dune looking out over Lake Michigan and listening to steely Dan.😊
Just signed up for yr patreon. I like yr style bro. Definitely will check out the full album, and AJa would a good one to do next, tho they have many other great albums. Keep on with it, my man!
Keep in mind this is their debut album. This is what talented musicians sound like. Aja and Royal Scam are my favorite albums. Not a bad song on any SD albums.
If you're going to do a deep dive into Steely Dan, it's best to do the albums in chronological order. You'll see how they evolved from an eclectic quirky but very talented early 70s rock band to a mostly studio project of full on jazz funk rock fusion.
Great way to start a debut album, and to start a career. This was the first song they released and it was a massive hit. At this time they were and actual band. Eventually they morphed into two incredible musicians (Becker and Fagen) who brought in the best studio musicians to record with. And man, are they incredible. Can't wait to see your reaction to Aja (pronounced like Asia), it's immaculate!
The song is about compulsive behavior, people repeating actions that aren't good for them. Jack may just be a generic thing to call a guy, like "dude", and the guy in each verse might not be the same guy as in the other verses. It may be about 3 different guys with 3 different obsessions. Since you're starting at the beginning with Steely Dan, you might want to hear "Rikki, Don't Lose That Number" before you listen to Aja, because that came before Aja. Another option is to listen to the entire album that "Rikki" is from, Pretzel Logic, because it's an excellent album. If you do that, then maybe you'd do Aja first, since that seems the album that lots of people want to hear you do, and then come back to Pretzel Logic.
As Julie Andrews instructed "Let's start at the very beginning". Very Astute of you to go back to Side A, track 1. I can see you dig this one; it's about addictions, circling back to do it again. a)Most catchy (economical) chorus in history - I defy anyone to come up with anything better/shorter. b)Despite it being inarguably brilliant, they won't revisit it, plunder, or mine it; they'll just find another avenue with different instruments/hooks/intriguing lyrics to keep the listener engaged and on their toes/ears. Aja was their best seller (It's very good). So is this LP, so are all the others. The Royal Scam is a personal favourite, but honestly they're America's (secret) Beatles, but with insane levels of quality control.

This song is a fable (not about real people) about addiction. About people going back and doing it again (3 situations). I hope that you hear "Parker's Band" before you die.
Everyone has their own taste but in my opinion, you could go through every one of their albums and you won't find a bad song. Maybe ones you like less than others, but not a bad one. Aja is a good next listen and I would highly recommended The Royal Scam after that.

I know that's right, Jack! 😅
Yes sir ! We DID grow up with excellent music n that's why we STILL jam to it all. Keep up the great work ! 😊
Aja is pronounced Asia, just like the continent, and is indeed their masterpiece.
They were untouchable in our house growing up.
Steely Dan was one of the few bands that every member of our family liked.

I remember the first time I heard this song in my car. The DJ said, "This band is going places".
Steely Dan is a groovy outfit indeed. I'm an old rocker but I like this band.
Every Dan album from the '70s is filled with gems and worth a full listen.
So is Gaucho, going into the 80's. I think Gaucho is in their top 3 albums.
Jack is the any man. Song is about how we just keep repeating our mistakes. As usual with the Dan, lyrics are very cynical but brilliant.
Perfectly stated…..I guess you could replace “Jack” with “Dude,” but that wouldn’t have the same ring now, would it? 😜

1st album, 1st song on the album, mega radio hit. What a way to start a career.

Steeley Dan is such a unique and amazing band. They were on the radio all the time in the 70s. ❤❤❤❤❤

First time to your channel. Love steely Dan can't wait to watch the rest of the LP
This is my favourite Steely Dan album.
it s my favorite track ! listening since the 70s ! lol
One of the great studio musicians who played on multiple Steely Dan albums. Denny Dias - guitar, electric sitar
"Aja is pronounced like "Asia"

Yes, Aja is 🔥!!!!!
Reeling In The Years is a good one also.Hell! Any song by them is very good!
The song is about compulsive behavior, people repeating actions that aren't good for them. Jack may just be a generic thing to call a guy, like "dude", and the guy in each verse might not be the same guy as in the other verses. It may be about 3 different guys with 3 different obsessions. Since you're starting at the beginning with Steely Dan, you might want to hear "Rikki, Don't Lose That Number" before you listen to Aja, because that came before Aja. b)Despite it being inarguably brilliant, they won't revisit it, plunder, or mine it; they'll just find another avenue with different instruments/hooks/intriguing lyrics to keep the listener engaged and on their toes/ears.
