WOW! what a difference 2 years makes. This video was made before the "drop" serve was approved and may have saved hundreds of players from "the yips", including myself. Anxiety, not physical inability causes the tips. Mine came just as drop serve came along which allowed me to find a more confident rhythm and stroke. One KEY is taking the paddle BACK! It will create the proper path and contact Jordan is talking about. This video just happened to pop up today as I had just had a HORRIBLE serving day. Another "key" is identifying what your doing wrong and then you can find ways to fix it.. I sort of dismissed this video 2 years ago, now it's a MUST WATCH... Thanks Jordan. Kev-
I'm experiencing this right now, and it started a few days ago. It's embarrassing and demoralizing. After watching your video and practicing this morning, I'm going to try to develop a routine. Thank you, Jordan.
Super timely. I've been missing serves consistently enough for someone to notice, and just yesterday someone I play with noticed that I keep my head up when serving. And they said exactly what you just said here about keeping one's head down. I look forward to putting it into practice.
Great video Jordan. Lost my serve a few weeks ago and after hitting a couple hundred in practice, I discovered as you stated in point number three. Once I kept my head down, it came back! Of course as you said, the whole routine is very important. The more we practice, the luckier we get!
Thank you for making this video! I met you at Brommer st. Park and mentioned to you I was using a backhand serve because of forehand serve yips. You said the video I needed was dropping soon. I used this video to help me get my serve back! It took practice, patience and time on the court alone, rep after rep until I got it. Couple weeks later and I was up to 80% + and now I'm probably 98% and working on placement and other stuff. It took me months to decide to post this so as not to jinx it! LoL Thanks again for a great TH-cam channel and helping me get through my case of the yips.
thank you.... A year ago, the serve was the strongest part of my game. I have been going through a 'yip season' and it has been discouraging. I appreciate your channel, your videos and your demeanor.
I served great for the first few months I played... accurate, plenty of power whenever I needed it... and then one day it went away, and the harder I worked at it, the worse it got... Tried backhand (accurate but no distance), listening to others... This fundamental video helps a lot! Thank you !
Wow!! Thanks for this video. This happened to me today and really blew my confidence. The psychology really got to me. As a newbies who had no issues with serving, my nerves got a hold on me playing with new people. Someone mentioned the yips and I had no idea what he meant. Can’t wait to try this.
The consistency of dropping the ball is really important. Many servers who struggle have the ball close to their body instead of out in front of them in the direction of the target. Drop on 1, hit on 2 is generally a good thing to do feel the rhythm. A drill to try if you "lose" your serve is to stand where you serve from and have your hitting partner at the net in line with the center of the service box. Hit balls hard at your partner with them catching them and tossing it back. Do that a few times and then remove the catching part of the exercise. Having a pre-shot routine is important with the only thing to think about is 1 the drop and 2 the acceleration through the ball to the target. Hit it right through your partner's chest whether they are there to catch it or not. I'm not sure how many people actually have the yips versus simply inconsistent technique leading to missed serves and a lack of confidence. If you struggle, look at your ball drop and ensure it's consistent and out in front right away.
I’m new to pickle ball but I have played lots of different racquet sports. This game came easily to me and my serves were good. Until one day I lost it. The yips for sure. Watching your video is very helpful. I think I’m more nervous now after serving so poorly. I’m looking at the target way more than the ball so I’ll take your advice on everything you showed in this video. Thanks much.
Thanks again for another great video Jordan. I recently switched from a drop serve to the traditional serve. In practice I was getting my serve in almost every time with accuracy and power. But when I started playing it was very inconsistent. It really helps to know that I should keep my head down and watch the paddle hit the ball. Thank you!
I used to have a dominant serve that I could place anywhere on the court and at various speeds. The Yips came out of nowhere and for over a week I couldn't hit the ball on a serve. I tried various changes to no avail until I realized that in my anxiety, I was gripping my paddle way too hard. By loosening up my grip seemed to be the answer and my serve is coming back. I will also try the approaches demonstrated on your video. Thanks for your tips as losing one's service is a horrific experience!
Great advice Jordan. I had this problem too and still do occasionally. What helped me was to focus on the HOLES in the ball and would even let the ball bounce before I hit it to get back into the "groove." Once I got it back, I would serve the ball normally without the bounce.
I’m going through this right now! I know I’m tweaking my wrist at the very end, but can’t figure out how to stop to consistently get my serves in. Even as a beginner I’ve never had this problem. It’s so frustrating. I will try a routine and see if that helps. Thank you!
It’s a motor pathway issue. You have to change something in your technique. Whether your motion goes more in to out or out to in, something has to be done differently. The motor pathway is stopped up and blocked. You will always have that’flinch’ in that pathway. I went through this in golf and had to change my stroke. Worked wonders.
Good tips. Clearing your mind and have routines will help you in other sports as well. If my serves are going to far I also like to start back further from the baseline. Especially if I am serving with the wind behind me.
Well done Jordan, much like the golf swing the same principles apply smooth and follow through! I have to try this tomorrow and most importantly relax.
Good video... all of these serving fundamentals are great to keep in mind and to focus on but unfortunately I don't think they really address the yips. Researchers have been studying the yips (typically putting yips in golfers) and are finding that for some people the cause of the yips are neurological (dystonia) and in others psychological. The specific treatment of the yips depends on the cause. For underlying neurological causes botulinum injections may be effective (although more research is needed). For anyone who has had the yips (myself included), they know that focusing on watching the ball and keeping the wrist stable doesn't begin to address the problem. The co-contraction in the forearm muscles that happens during the yips is not under conscious control. Hopefully in the future we can begin to uncover what's going on here and determine ways to resolve the yips. In my experience, nearly everyone who has the yips simply waits them out, and then at some point their serve magically returns.
Overcoming the mental block, which is psychological, is an important portion of missing serves, which is why I bring it up in this video. I’m not a psychologist, so I concentrate on the fundamentals things that you CAN control.
Personally I have several serves that I use in different situations or just to mix up the look my opponent is seeing from me. Recently a friend of mine had the serving yips so I taught her the backhanded serve which works for her now.
I play pickle ball and my serve has been inconsistent hopefully watching this video helps I am a tennis player and im use to over head serves underhand seem difficult for me
That’s a great way to take your mind off the forehand serve for a while and develop a backhand serve, but you never want to give up your forehand serve entirely!
Wow!! You came to me when I needed you most...I was off for three weeks and when I returned I have a bad case of the yips; Yipes...thank you for the encouragement!!
I thought the same thing. It looks like Jordan lifts the paddle so that it is just above the wrist before he strikes the ball. Only a slo-mo video can really tell if it is or not. Videoing yourself serving is also a big help so you can see if your mechanics are right, if the motion is smooth, if you're pushing through the ball with the paddle aimed where you want. While it doesn't help with the yips, I call getting the serve in Rule #1, you can't win a point if you don't put this little 3 inch ball in the 150 square feet area. Thanks Jordan

Same with me! I blame a curse of some kind. Tomorrow early I'm serving buckets of balls; it's gotta get better, right??

Nice! Yes, running this checklist is a good way to get past the serving yips.

Yes, staying centered and within yourself is key. The answer is not "over there", it's right where you are. That's a bit woo woo but it's true, lol!

Me too. Today I threw my paddle and then went over to it and kicked it. I serve better when I just hit it hard, although I still miss a lot.

Great!
Where should a beginner stand when serving, as in horizontal position along back line?
Always so helpful. Where did you get ball basket?
This one is better: alnk.to/9bqlRXx
Love your informative videos and presentation of each one. Wish I lived closer for some one on one.😊
Thanks!
Thank you so much Jordan for this video. I had that problem, and some of my friends too 😞 it's the worst thing that can happen in PB!
👍🏻
Thánks very nice serve👍
Lifting the head is all me, need to work on this part the most.

Very helpful, thank you!
You’re welcome Darci !

Great stuff Jordan. Thanks
Thanks David!
Good tips and video. Thank you!
You’re welcome!
Damn tips and tricks here. So helpful. I can’t wait til I tell my granny and all her friends.
😊😂😂
So helpful! Thank you! Didn’t know it was called yips 😂
lol funny name right? You're welcome, happy to help!
I play pickle ball and my serve has been inconsistent hopefully watching this video helps I am a tennis player and im use to over head serves underhand seem difficult for me
Hope this helps. This method has worked for a lot of players.
Thanks that was really good. This will help me get back into a simple yet solid serve routine.
Great!
For yips in golf, reverse grip. For yips in pickleball, backhand serve. My 2 cents.
That’s a great way to take your mind off the forehand serve for a while and develop a backhand serve, but you never want to give up your forehand serve entirely!
I think the backhand serve is causing shoulder pain, so I’m working on the orthodox serve. I think just relaxing and taking my time helps.
Whenever I’m targeting a backhand, I’ve noticed that looking at the ball and the angle of my paddle has so much more accuracy. It’s crazy.
Awesome!
Wow!! You came to me when I needed you most...I was off for three weeks and when I returned I have a bad case of the yips; Yipes...thank you for the encouragement!!
Awesome Eve !
I am currently in a bout with the yips and it just came out of nowhere. It’s so frustrating
Bummer. Hopefully this helps!
Have you ever had the serving yips?
Kevin Duff-
There's ALWAYS gotta be, "that guy" out there...Sheesh..
I'm a beginner but aren't you serving with a sidearm motion? Is that "legal"?
