The complete lack of music, the emotional distress of the characters, damn near 90% of the episode taking place on the roof...when you are as gifted as Isayama is in writing plot and characters than episodes like these are gold mines.

Jesus this episode...no matter how many times I've seen it, my reaction never changes. 😭😭😭 Dub, sub, makes no difference, forever gut-wrenching and awesome.
I've watched 3x16-18 so many times. Truly one of if not the greatest group of 3 episodes in any show I've watched.
The turning point begins
Erwin is more of gambler for making decisions that has high risk with high reward but Armin even though he is a little timid and having self doubt in himself he still comes up with ideas out of the box
True but Erwin just through sheer force of will actually talked many men into straight suicide for the cause..no way in hell is a 15 yr Armin going to be able to do that..those soldiers would say, get the hell out of my face kid..in a war Erwin is needed..he is the symbol of humanity and leads the charge..in a war we can't wait yrs for Armin to get there..just my opinion.
I agree! While Erwin is no idiot, Armin is vastly more intelligent and comes to much more logical conclusions in my opinion. I do think Erwin’s experiences definitely helps him make great judgement calls that do have risk, yet are still seemingly based in some battle experience logic.
Also, I think Erwin, and later Levi, understood they needed Armin’s out of the box thinking and strategy. Erwin wasn’t able to deduce that Reiner and Bertholdt were in the walls yet Armin did. And when everyone doubted Armin, Erwin told them this isn’t a usual enemy, these are a different type of enemy and they had to think outside the box.
In Armin's own words: To fight in a cruel world you must renounce your humanity. Mikasa: Because this is a cruel world. Annie: If someone "good" came to power in a cruel world, we'd be finished. In a cruel world cold and precise decisions are needed, far from feelings in order to survive and in that the best of all was Erwin, if they got to this point it was because of Erwin, Armin solved many things, but without the sacrifices that Erwin made, That knowledge would have been useless.

Armin was completely useless before, and even more useless after being revived. Erwin was the showrunner and it all falls apart after he’s gone.

I’m a little sad my favorite bits in the episode got trimmed - Hange's reveal of Moblit’s sacrifice (RIP Moblit, you were a real one), and Eren’s line about how the only thing left in his heart is hate - unexpectedly, the kid is actually self-aware! Also the implications that line has for later seasons…
But still, fascinating to see the couch immediately split into factions to discuss the merits of who to bring back. I think Isayama definitely intended for such discussions to spring up, just like this.
Everytime i watch reactors watch this episode I always verbally say "This series is so fucking good" what else can i say? Shits fantastic, we weebs have been feasting this last decade for sure with all these high quality anime.

Watching those videos made me feel nostalgic for times where I thought Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie and Zeke were just villains....everything makes sense now that I know what really was up with them.
Damn, wtf... Hange's words to Mikasa are very important actually, I use to just think those were some wisdom words to get her to stop being insubordinate.

Props for this story for managing to make a genuinely hard decision to make. No one can disagree that both were extremely needed andd earned their right to receive the syringe.
The only difference is one side is more experienced and pragmatic, while the other is more hopeful and had long term goals.
but. it was an easy decision and they fucked it up :D thats why the show continued. if erwin wouldve been alive, the show wouldve endedin season 4 episode 6 or something :D armin even admits it throughout the series
@@nilexinator5901I’d disagree, I think the cellar talk flashback Levi had showed him how short sighted Erwin really was. All Erwin could think about was seeing what was in the cellar, but Armin’s talk of seeing the sea was his hope, there was something past this war, Armin saw the beauty of the world, just not the horrors of the war. In the end, Levi even said this, Armin had hope in his eyes.

I liked Armin better but from a logical point of view I would have chose Erwin as the clear choice due to them being at war and in a war you need a proven leader and that was definitely Erwin. I liked Armin and the argument being made by Mikasa and Eren about how Armin could be a asset is valid but that relies on a gamble of him being usefl in the future rather than already having a concrete leader in Erwin.

I love that we had one person picking Armin, one picking Erwin, and one picking Armin because Erwin had already done enough (which is basically what ends up happening), goes to show how brilliant this decision is
The best factor in my opinion is the fact that if Erwin was brought back and he found out Armin died in his place, he would be furious. He believed in Armin and he would be willing to die if it means Armin could continue 10 times over

The flashbacks give context for why Levi chose Armin over Erwin. Erwin cared most about reaching that basement, while Armin wanted to see the sea (and beyond). Levi Saw that Erwin, while excellent in bringing them to that point, couldn't be the one to be brought back.
No not rlly cuz even with those flashbacks he was still gonna inject it or give it to Erwin. It wasn’t until Erwin rejected the injection so no he gave it to Armin because of Erwin not bc of what u said

Having titans doesn't excuse yourself from other natural dangers. Fire burns and kills in this world too. So Armin burning and falling from that height should have splattered.
@@anomanderrake5434 He was still attached to the Colossal so he didn’t fall + surviving a burn like that for a few minutes is absolutely logical (very little time passed, that’s why the blood on Levi was highlighted to communicate that to the audience, most people miss it tho). Also, Armin’s lung wasn’t burnt (shown in the last episode) which is why he was able to breathe. He obviously would have died very soon if it weren’t for the syringe. So, nothing unrealistic about it.

Thoughts on why Armin wasn’t dead (massive S4 spoilers, anime only):
I think Eren/Ymir did something to ensure Armin was alive. Similar to why Floch was the only survivor of the charge, I think both are alive because Eren wanted them to keep going.

They may sit bleeding out as the neurons in their brains die off, but as long as a single neuron or shred of consciousness remains, I’m pretty sure that’s enough for the titan syrum
Both narratively and in terms of the plot, Erwin had already fulfilled his role in the series. In the end, his another general/commander or whatever AKA a glorified soldier. Armin is that and more. Not only that, he embodies all of Erwin's dreams and aspirations that had been agonizing through a painful and cynical existence. In many ways, I see Armin as child Erwin reborn and renewed, which is why it's so damn significant that Erwin's last beautiful words happen in delirium, regressing into his innocence, when he could still see the world through the eyes of wonder and hopes for a better future.

The only thing that armin has advantage against erwin is his mind. But other than that its all erwin. Erwin have better leadership, charisma, persuasion, have far more experience in everything, better in politics, can also plan, deduct, and strategize. Far more braver, and can do some split decision making if needed.
And lastly lets not forget... erwin have the biggest balls in the entire show. Perfect for the colossal titan

Armin is literally smarter than Erwin. The only thing Erwin have on him at this point was battle experience which armin will gain
Battle and tactical experience, political weight, ruthlessness Armin never got, reputation among military and civilians, being good at seeing people’s potential, intuition that helped him to guess about and lure Titan infiltrator into a trap before anyone else even thought about that.

Erwin has vision to this point. Armin had a future to strive for. Levi realizes this after he gets his hand slapped.
I wish for an Attack on Titan spinoff prequel of Erwin so we can get a deeper understanding of Levi's decision in this episode. Erwin lived his life as a commander of an entire army destined to certain death likely sooner rather than later fighting against an overwhelming enemy he and humanity knows next to nothing about. He has been forced to make decisions only a devil would make all while having to bear the consequences with a human soul. He got humanity this far. It is enough. Let him rest.

The only reason why I chose Armin instead of Erwin, even though Erwin is my all time favorite character of the show, is because Erwin's whole arc was all about finding out what is the the basement, so basically he has no future in the world, Armin's dreams go way beyond that. Also Erwin was 100% ready to die, so it would be cruel to bring him back.

Armin is the better choice because while Erwin has experience he can only formulate his plans because his goal is to reach the basement, once he reaches the basement he would have no more motivation to create any proper plan he would than be useless beyond that point. Armin wants to save the world and go beyond the wall

I just wanna say you actually can survive a burn like that. At least temporarily. Most of the skin and hair melted away but the subcutaneous tissue muscles/fat all burned and stayed in place. So if the internal organs like his heart and lungs at least are still functional it’s possible to stay alive at least momentarily.

It isn't the burns that makes Armin living unbelievable. That's actually possible. It's the fall.

So like, in reality our bodies are really durable. He could've survived the initial steam onslaught and ten suffered a very painful, relatively slow death. If they had left him a few more minutes he would've died. His externals would've been burnt for sure, his lung too, but lungs can survive a lot of abuse. The rest of his internals likely would've been unburnt, or if they were they'd have been like mildly damaged. Think about how long it takes to cook meat

My theory was that, if they had revived Erwin, he would've been put on trial for sacrificing 98% of the Scouts in a suicide charge. Best case scenario he gets thrown into jail forever. And we are also forgetting the mental toll the suicide charge took on Erwin. If he were to be brought back, he would've suffered from severe hysterical neurosis aka PTSD. I doubt Erwin would've been able to function as a normal human being knowing the fact that HE was the one who destroyed the entire Scout Regiment by himself. Plus the fact that he got turned into the one thing he has been killing almost his entire life. And lets not even get started on the memories he would've inherited from Bert.
So in the end, Armin was the better, although not the best, choice.

Erwin was slave to a relatively short term goal while armin was focused on a long term goal so he was yet to make peace with his end, so levi made the most selfless choice..
