As a parent, I’m trying to learn more. I’ve heard good things and on the surface it seems like a good program to add to the curriculum.
But we are new to public school and have heard two sides that some schools may be using SEL as eastern based “mindfulness” therapy usurping parental rights to teach one spirituality over another. We happen to be very open minddd and encourage our kids to learn from other cultures anything that could be helpful or useful to them… but it concerns me that some teachers might be crossing lines and using SEL as an indoctrination entry point to political indoctrination.
Mostly because I see out of character behaviors from my children since we switched to Public school, much more anger issues or vocabulary that doesn’t seem to match the age range.
That might have nothing to do with SEL specifically…
But It scares me. Since we come from a state that supports En Loco Parentus policies.
Our kids are used to focusing on rigorous academics and the rest flows from there. Social emotional learning is taught at home and supported by the school.
Are public school students that neglected that they need 15 minutes of this at school every day?
    Oh those poor dears…

Social emotional also naturally flows from after school activities and sports… places conflict might come up where they can address it in the moment and learn how to deal constructively.
Your calm down corner reminds me of our calming bottles we made with the kids as toddlers for when they were having tantrums and needed something to redirect their focus.

@@brightpage1020 We love when parents are so involved with their student’s academics. How great that you have calming bottles at home! We believe teaching the whole child is so important to a productive and peaceful academic environment.
