  • Smashing Pumpkins - Spaniards - San Francisco, Live, In Plainsong Tour, 3-25-16, front row, The Masonic. Billy Corgan: Sit back and enjoy this... kaleidoscopic tour.
    Other Tidbits:
Billy Corgan: We play in our In Plainsong sets we feature one album every night. In the past, we’ve done… we go to a particular era, is a better way to put it. So we’ve done the Adore era, we’ve done the Mellon Collie, and tonight we feature songs from Siamese Dream. So sit back and enjoy this kaleidoscopic tour..
This was a seated show, though many fans stood, danced or got up to cheer for various portions of the concert.
There were about a dozen extra autographed tour posters left over from the VIP pre-show, and they were given out to the front row fans next to me at the end of the concert, which was nice. Since I went to the VIP and already got one of them, I passed it on to one of my neighbors.
The VIP performance was held in the 'California Room' of the Nob Hill Masonic Center. About ~45 fans were in attendance, which was about 3 times more than there were at the VIP in Concord in 2015 (End Times Tour with Marilyn Manson). Many of the fans recognized each other from previous VIPs and SP concerts. However, none of us could recognize what the first song was...
    Fan: Awesome!
Corgan: Eh, it was OK... lol

I genuinely think this version could've been big had it been released as a single on a pumpkins album

I don't get these comments. If you look back on the last 10 years of live shows, Jeff fits in and embellishes beautifully, even on the original material. I've seen some of the 90s era shows and a lot of songs I was looking forward to were borderline unlistenable. They sound better live than ever to my ears, in person and on bootleg (taking recording technology into consideration). He is extremely competent and multidimensional, without so much single string noodling that didn't always quite seem to keep up in the old days.

My only issue is Billy seems to have completely deferred to Jeff as a lead player, and let's be honest, one of the defining sounds of the Pumpkins is Billy's completely unique guitar voice, especially in his leads. I like Jeff just fine, his technical ability is better than Billy no question (i like to hear him go off sometimes), but Billy is more unique and inventive, he's instantaneously recognizable. That's the voice people want to hear.

The best part about James besides his tasteful textural playing was that he didn't overplay and noodle over everything like Jeff does. This is a good live performance, but I wanted to hear Billy soloing, not Jeff. Billy is one of the best guitarists ever, he shouldn't defer to anyone. I also disagree that Jeff is technically more capable. Billy could wipe the floor with him easily. If you've heard any live stuff from the Gish era you'll hear that Billy could outshred just about anyone.

For real? People are staying seated at Pumpkins shows these days and only standing to applaud the end of the song? Wow.

seign people like hearing music not the crowd making noise

what he means about the crowd staying seated is that The Smashing Pumpkins shows from the early 90s until I'm not sure used to be wild. in the 90s and early 2000s depending on the songs huge mosh pits and also crowd surfing in the 90s. Not sure if anyone crowd surfs anymore at any concert. Im sure people still have pits at like punk and metal shows but I stopped going to those shows when I was 13 in 2002 when I Went to my first show from a Grateful Dead member. It was all over after that.

let billy solo and strum the fucking rhythm, dingus. sounds terrible with layered battling leads.

Jeff's soloing pretty much ruins it. He does ok by himself but he doesn't really play off You Know Who and if you listen to the guitar tones you can tell that's what messes it up, I was thinking "boy the songwriting is must mucky" but I think that is the culprit. Nothing against jeff he's a hell of a guitarist just comparing it to past Pumpkins shows.

+Cody S IMO Jeff is singlehandedly the worst thing that has ever happened to the Pumpkins; James' rich, warm, textured tones were perfect for the SP tonal aesthetic. Jeff is a virtuoso but lacks majorly in taste. All that shrill, metallic shredding is just nasty to these ears.

+X YZ Idk worse than Sierra Swan ;)? Let's face it, given the situation that they decided to continue, someone between a protege ie. semi-permanent member and a session player was the best way to go, otherwise the whole thing would've been like Jack Bates aaaaaand on second guitar Jack Baaates. It's just tough to see with James there so close you just want everything to go back to how it was before it got broken...imo
