This video made me sentimental for the days of going to a Video Store. My love for film came from going to Blockbuster, and discovering a Godzilla movie. It was when I rented the DVD “Godzilla: Tokyo SOS”, and saw behind the scenes of the movie, was when I knew my passion for the art of filmmaking began. I have to thank Blockbuster for my discovery of Godzilla and filmmaking as a whole.

Really dug this video...I'm the manager of a independently owned video/record store in greenville, nc. We've been in business for 27 years and we're a staple of the town. the past few years have been tough for us on the video rental side of the store. RedBox is probably our biggest competition. Seems like there's one on every corner...but we've managed to hang in there thanks to guys like you who would rather experience a video store instead of a vending machine. Same goes for the music side of the store. Most of what we sell is new vinyl records. Anyways, big fan of all the Cinemassacre projects and i just wanted to say that i really appreciated this video. peace brothers.

This used to be a big part of my childhood. While everything is so convenient now, nothing can beat the pleasure of going into a video store (to rent or to buy) almost every day after school and spending hours and hours looking at the boxes and reading synopsis at the back. And the feeling of being pissed off after you rented a totally shitty movie because you couldn't watch the trailer first.
Netflix is convenient but I rarely ever find something that I'd like to watch. And if you don't have internet, you can't watch it anyway.

The physicality of it all. Seeing, feeling, touching the movie cases, taking your time sauntering down the alleys. Either biking to the nearest small independent video store or try to get mom or dad to drive you to the slightly further but larger chain video store get yourself a game and a few movies..ah, those were the days. Another unmentioned bonus of this phenomenon was that that wall of new movies eventually became old movies that found themselves in the sale bins for a paltry price. By such means did many of us acquire some of our favorite VHS tapes, dvd and games.

  • @GreenZeusmask

I was lucky enough to be old enough to experience video stores in the early 2000s and bringing home 2 or 3 movies and watching them all night with family eatting popcorn and too many sugary drinks. I'm 30 now.

  • @robophreeq

Before Blockbuster came to town, there was Erol's Video. But forget about the movies - they had NES GAMES.
I remember riding in the car with fingers crossed on both hands just PRAYING that the one beautiful, shiny gold copy of a little game called The Legend Of Zelda that they had would be there waiting on the shelf. I remember the sheer euphoria of standing there with that gold cart in my hand, my parents signing it out and riding home knowing that it was going to be a good weekend.
James and Mike are correct - there is something lost in not being able to visit a physical store.

The fact that I live in a smaller town is what keeps our local family video alive. A lot of people here don't have a reliable internet connection (many folks still use dial up). Even though I have a great internet connection and a Netflix account I still go to the video store and rent DVDs with my fiance and family because of one the nostalgia and two its just a fun thing, renting a movie and bringing home some take out and popping popcorn, what can I say I'm a man of simple pleasures.

    • @diceblock
      @diceblock 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The industry went to digital to save space, make exact copies, because VHS are huge to carry and stuff(I don't want to go to far). It's the same thing for vinyls. It's a big debate, because you loose so much quality when going to digital and that's the worst thing. If you buy a film from the internet; you loose quality. If you buy a song from iTunes, you loose quality because of their "AAC" format. Just to prove you my point; take a song from a CD you have, convert that song in mp3 using a program or on the net. If you pay close attention, you will hear the lost in audio quality (on mp3).

Proud to say I live in a town in upstate NY where we have had the same video store for close to 25 years. I rented all my games and movies here until high speed internet came along. I still go to support it as much as I can. It's a priceless gem in my opinion. i love browsing all his old wrestling ppv's and horror films. Long live Video Korner II !!!

There's still one great video store around where I live called Pic-a-Flick (perhaps not the greatest connotation, but, whatever). It's one of the places where there's not enough space to show all the movies facing forward, so there're just millions of the things crammed into the shelves like a library, complete with comprehensive collections of the cheesiest horror/sci-fi/martial arts movies in existence. I chose one at random and it turned out to be a Chuck Norris action flick where he beats up a terrorist invasion. Awesome crap.

when something is just instantly accessible it really does take that special magic out of the whole thing, like these guys are saying, going to the video store and spending time deciding what to get and perhaps getting a takeaway and heading home to watch it, it probably doesn't sound like much now but that was exciting! :), even the little things like getting a demo disk on the front of your games magazine and playing it over and over again, you just appreciated it because that was all you had, you couldn't just download anything you wanted. whereas now it all instant, games and movies, and that's cool, I have an emulator on my computer to play PS1 classics, a steam account, and just go onto putlocker to watch anything i like, but today's generation will never know what it was like to simply put a video into a VHS player and press play.
aaahhh the good ol days :)

One thing not mentioned was how much VHS owners relied on the rental market because the cost to own a VHS tape was crazy, like $75-$80. At some point they became relatively cheaper but owning a decent library of VHS tapes wasn't widely affordable until at least the late '80s early '90s.

I used to work in several video stores when I was in college in the mid nineties, best job I ever had. Parents would come in with their kids, couples would come in and rent all the new releases to take home for their night in. It was a huge ritual for many people back then. All the video stores I worked in have long since closed down. Just this past Christmas I was sitting in one of them with some friends and it is now a fucking fast food place. We had a great time pointing around and sharing stories about our beloved video store that existed their 10 years previously.

After a long week of school me and my mom would usually go to Hollywood Video or Blockbuster and rent movies and prepare to watch some all weekend, or renting videos to watch with your friends too (especially horror movies) Those were the days, glad I grew up in the 90's.

  • @saderin

I don't think weekends have ever been quite the same as they were in the 80's and 90's. You had video stores, you had friends (who either now moved away or work hours where you rarely see them.) who you would play video games or street hockey. You may still have some arcades (In western PA there was still a few around up till 2005). Things came out slower or distributed weird in different regions. Now a days you can anything you want instantly and that nice but it's too easy. I liked when had really hunt for a game or movie I wanted. And then you had Saturday night wrestling, Mystery Science Theater (91-95 comedy central) and SNL (Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Chris Farley etc.)
Anyone got a time machine yet? Think I would want to take a day trip.

It wasn't all that great. As always, the best thing was probably that you were just a little kid at the time. On the other hand, it's probably true that entertainment comes to us a little too easy nowadays, although I don't miss only having two channels on a rainy day or waiting to rent/buy a movie or game, only to find out that it sucked. Horribly.
You can't physically go back to the 80s and 90s and ride your bike around, but if you want a dose of 80s/90s pop culture, straight from the time, can I suggest you go check out Google's Usenet Archive, as that thing has user postings dating back to the early 80s. You have discussions on there about the release of the Gameboy, Back to the Future, breaking news on the death of Kurt Cobain etc. It's a bit of a trip.

Omg, this is so...I don't know how to explain it, but it's like shocking and sad. The hole going into our nostalgic past and remembering these video stores and the way how James and the rest explain all the qualities of what video stores had to offer like looking at the cover art of a vhs and video game was exciting and wanted to make you rent it. I remember I would always go and rent movies and video games at blockbuster In my hometown Monrovia, now that I drive by there, it is gone and turned in to some sort of spa treatment place. :( I also remember when I was a kid going in there with my mom and sister, me and my sis would play with the other kids in the playhouse they had in the store and there was a movie playing for kids to watch, and for some reason I also remember an inflatable Godzilla decoration hanging from the ceiling. But I guess it is convenient to have all your movies on Netflix with a one time payment a month, but its like technology is making us lazier or something and spoiled. I love how James shares these old aspects of the past and brings out the best qualities of them. I felt the same way when James shared "the Dragon in my dreams" video, it was so touching. I literally felt like tearing up. James is so creative and imaginative I wish I knew him as a kid and got to experience all his cool adventures.

Back when we went to video rental stores, we were participating in society - a social urban space, with other people. We are more than just nostalgic for these lost spaces; they were essential social experiences, discoveries of new ideas and interactions with other people. Both we and the urban landscape have suffered in the technological march of the marketplace; we are now less socialised, since it's possible to do most of your shopping now without having to leave your home. All that's left of the intimacy of the urban landscape is eating out, and I'm sure if we could get food on demand, piped through our computers, the major food companies would have pushed for that already.

    • @brianm2881
      @brianm2881 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'd say that for 90 percent of the people who ever went to a video store, the height of their social interaction in the place was picking out what they wanted, exchanging a brief pleasantry with the person behind the counter and then handing over the money.

+juntartful yea if you have a substandard hi fi with a cheap needle or scratched vinyl... tape is actually really high quality but like vinyl, maintenance is required, cleaning the heads, demagnetization and actually looking after it etc. the reasob why vinyl and tape are higher quality is because unlike cd and mp3 , it is the actual sound wave thats recorded (analog) not a computer reprisentation (digital) sadly ineducated people can't be bothered with that and people in general are dumb - like when they buy a stereo they buy the one that has lots of flashing lights that could land a plane and says words like 20000 Watts... the difference between 3 Watts and 10 is huge, but the difference between 10 and 100 is not hardly... I suppose you think mp3 is hi quality? it's useful for archiving but so compressed ! so there's an education for ya!

Order Of Magnitude - The Paranormal & Personal man I haven't had a stereo in years. I never had vinyl but still have some tapes. sound definitely is better. I would take cds sound over mp3 though way too compressed.

    I wonder....
How much are James video and gamecollection cost and how much is the realtime value of it all if he one day say "Im selling it all!" ?(not that I think he will)
Also how did he get his hands on it all?
Saving his whole life? Running on fleemarkets? Or are he insanly rich?
This is no critic. I love his videos and Im jeallous of some of the gems in there.
I just want to know how much all that stuff has costed both with the time to get it all and the worth of it all.....

It's been built up slowly over the years, plus fans donate stuff all the time as well

He's been collecting since he was a kid, so give or take 25 years or so. Also, he gets a ton of donations from fans. It would be hard to pinpoint an actual value on his overall collection but its definitely big enough that he probably has to take out extra insurance on it.

Screw Blockbuster. They came in and knocked out all the Mom and Pop video stores and required you to have a credit card to be able open an account and rent anything (at least in the mid 90s when they came into our town). They suck and good riddance. I miss the video store, but not Blockbuster.

drexler902374 hehe karma came back to pay blockbuster because they were like the GameStop of movies. Big corporation only. Too bad Netflix or amazon don't have some foreign films we used to find at the small stores

I always thought going to the video store was fun. I guess I just like leaving my house to do stuff. Convenience is sedentary so I don't really like it.

This makes me feel old. I'm only twenty!!!! But I remember renting vhs's from the local gas station, blockbuster, and the library. I used to rent old haryhausen films when I was little, like Clash of the Titans or the Seventh Voyage of Sinbad!
